The contribution of package design to the marketing of food products targeted at children has increased in the last years, which makes it necessary to study how label design affects children’s perception of food products in order to inform policy design and development. Considering that methodological selection is one of the major challenges when conducting research with children, the present work aimed at comparing rating and choice-based conjoint to study the influence of three design variables (cartoon characters, nutrition claims and traffic-light system) on the hedonic reaction of school-aged children towards labels of two popular snack foods: yogurt and sponge cake. A total of 238 children in grades 1–6 from a private primary school in Montevideo (Uruguay) participated in the study. Participants were divided into two groups of similar size who performed either a rating or a choice-based conjoint task. The rating-based conjoint involved the evaluation of 8 labels using a hedonic scale, whereas in the choice task children had to select the label they would like the most from each of 8 pairs of labels. None of the variables was found to significantly affect children’s hedonic scores in the rating-based conjoint analysis. On the contrary, choice-based conjoint proved to be easily understood and enabled to discriminate among labels. Results from this approach showed that the inclusion of cartoon characters and nutrition claims positively influenced children’s preferences. Implications for research and policy making in label design for children are discussed. An important issue in the development of metal-based radiopharmaceuticals is the selection of the labelling strategy in order to couple the metal to the pharmacophore without losing the biological activity. With the aim to evaluate the correlation between ligand denticity and biological behaviour of the corresponding 99mTc complexes, we designed a tridentate and a bidentate 5-nitroimidazole derivatives suitable for 99mTc(I) tricarbonyl complexation and with potential use as radiopharmaceuticals towards hypoxic tissue diagnosis. Ligands were synthesized using metronidazol, a pharmaceutical containing the bioreductive pharmacophore as starting material. The chelating units were connected to the pharmacophore using the click reaction of Huisgen. Both 99mTc complexes were obtained in high yield and were hydrophilic and stable in labelling milieu. The complex obtained from the tridentate ligand exhibited high stability in human plasma, low protein binding and a favourable biodistribution characterized by low blood and liver uptake, fast elimination and negligible uptake in other organs or tissues. Selective uptake and retention in tumour together with favourable tumour/muscle ratio makes this 99mTc-complex a promising candidate for further evaluation as potential hypoxia imaging agent in tumours. The bidentate ligand, on the other hand, yielded a less stable 99mTc-complex that experimented hydrolysis in vitro and decomposition in human plasma and showed high protein binding, high blood and liver uptake and moderate excretion. Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinus edodes) were packaged under air in two macroperforated packages (A—9.0×103 perforations/m2, 0.1mm2 surface and B—17 perforations/m2, 0.1mm2 surface) and under two gas mixtures (15% and 25% O2) in polyethylene packages, and stored at 5 ◦C for 18 d. The sensory quality of the mushrooms was evaluated using a trained assessors panel. Mushrooms packaged in macroperforated packages A showed the smallest deterioration rate. However, weight loss after 6 d of storage reached 15%, which is unacceptable. Besides, shelf life of shiitake mushrooms in active modified atmosphere was limited by off-odour development. Mushrooms in these packages developed off-odour after 12 d of storage due to the fact that O2 concentrations fall bellow 5%. On the other hand, the shelf life of mushrooms packaged in macroperforated packages B was limited by their sensory deterioration, particularly by changes in the colour and uniformity of their gills. In this film, mushrooms could be stored for approximately 10 d with a weight loss lower than 2%. Results from the present work suggest that during the first 6 d of storage all the evaluated packaging conditions were useful for reducing mushroom deterioration rate. In order to assess the influence of nutritional knowledge on perceived healthiness and willingness to try functional foods, 104 consumers filled out a Nutritional Knowledge Questionnaire and answered a conjoint task. Participants had to evaluate 16 concepts consisting of combinations of carrier products (yogurt, milk desserts, pan bread and mayonnaise) and nutritional modifications (regular product, lowfat, enriched with antioxidants, and enriched with fibre). Three groups of consumerswere identified with different level of nutritional knowledge. Highly significant differences were found in the healthiness evaluations of the clusters, which mainly depended on nutritional knowledge related to the links of diet and diseases. Highly significant differences in willingness to try functional foods were also found between the clusters. Whereas consumers with the lowest nutritional knowledge were not interested in consuming functional foods, the addition of fibre or antioxidants to healthy products increased the willingness of consumers with the highest level of nutritional knowledge to try the evaluated functional foods. These results suggested that lack of nutritional knowledge might limit the acceptance of functional foods and thus the use of health claims might be necessary to assure that consumers are aware of their health benefits. Nutritional warnings highlighting products with high content of nutrients associated with non-communicable diseases have emerged as a potentially efficient alternative to discourage consumption of unhealthful products. However, the relative influence of this front-of-pack nutrition information scheme compared to other label features is still under researched. In this context, the aim of the present work was to study the influence of nutritional warnings and other information commonly displayed on food labels to convey health associations on consumers' choice and visual attention. A choice-conjoint study using labels of cookies and crackers was implemented considering the following three variables: front-of-pack nutrition information (nutritional warnings vs. facts up front panel), nutrient claim (present vs. absent) and type of product (conveying health vs. hedonic associations). A total of 124 people completed the task using the monitor of an eye-tracker. Participants were asked to select the label they would prefer to buy if they were in a supermarket. Nutritional warnings were efficient in attracting consumers' attention and required less time and fewer fixations to process than the facts up front panel. In addition, their inclusion on the labels significantly discouraged consumers' choice of labels. However, type of product was the most important variable influencing the choice of both cookies and crackers. Results from the present work confirm the potential of nutritional warnings as directive front-of-pack nutrition labelling scheme and stress that they cannot be expected to cause radical changes in consumers' eating habits due to their competition with other product features. Instead, they are expected to encourage consumers to select the most healthful option within a product category. In this work we report crystallographic structure variations and the related modifications on the magnetic behavior of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3±δ introduced by heat-treatments in different synthesis atmospheric conditions. We have prepared polycrystalline ceramic samples using a modified polymeric precursors method, which produces highly homogeneous specimens. The use of argon atmosphere enlarges the crystalline c-axis as detected by Rietveld refinements. As a consequence, an improvement in the magnetic transition temperature TC of the samples was observed. Our results also indicate that different heat-treatment conditions change the magnetic interactions between the ferromagnetic (F) and antiferromagnetic (AF) structures of these systems. Our conclusions rely on the use of AC magnetic susceptibility measurements as the experimental tool for measuring these variations. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the influence of rational and intuitive thinking styles on consumer choices and information processing when evaluating yogurt labels. Seventy-one consumers completed a choice-conjoint task with yogurt labels. Three 2-level variables were considered: fat and sugar content (low vs. high), label background (Background A vs. Background B), and traffic light system (present vs. absent). Consumers were presented with 8 choice sets composed of two labels on a computer screen, and were asked to indicate which one they would consume. Their eye movements were recorded during the task using an eye-tracker. After completing the conjoint task, consumers completed the Rational Experiential Inventory (REI). Latent class cluster analysis identified two consumer segments with different preference for analytic-rational or intuitive-experiential thinking styles. Consumers who predominantly relied on analytical-rational thinking engaged on a greater information search and a more thoughtful analysis of nutritional information for making their choices than consumers who preferred intuitive-experiential thinking. Besides, thinking style had a strong influence on the part-worth utilities of the evaluated variables. Results from the present work provide preliminary evidence about the influence of thinking style on consumer food choices, which can have potential implications for the design of communication strategies aimed at changing dietary patterns. The influence of two sample presentation and instruction delivery protocols on the results of consumer-based sensory evaluations was studied. In two independent experiments, five peach jams and four Colonia-type cheese (from the Colonia region in Uruguay) were taste-tested. In the first experiment, one group of 54 consumers used the sequential monadic (SM) and the other group of 54 consumers used the rank-rating (RR) sample presentation protocols for the jam sample evaluation. In the second experiment, one group of 54 consumers used the SM and the other group of 54 consumers used the RR sample presentation protocols for the cheese sample evaluation. All samples were evaluated using hedonic scales and CATA (check-all-that-apply) questions. Overall liking scores were found not to depend on the sample presentation protocol. Although the protocol was found to affect the choice and number of attributes listed in the CATA question used by respondents to differentiate the samples, the spatial configurations of samples derived by multiple factor analysis showed a high degree of correlation between the two protocols for most of the CATA attributes. Cross-sectional survey with a representative sample of urban households. Household food insecurity was measured using the ELCSA. The percentage of respondents who gave affirmative responses for each of the items of the ELCSA was determined. Exploratory factor analysis was carried out to determine the ELCSA’s factor structure. A probit model was used to determine the impact of some individual and household sociodemographic characteristics on the identified dimensions of food insecurity. Metropolitan area centred on Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, April–September 2014. Adults aged between 18 and 93 years (n 742). The percentage of affirmative responses to the items of the ELCSA ranged from 4·4 to 31·7 %. Two factors were identified in the exploratory factor analysis performed on data from households without children under 18 years old, whereas three factors were identified for households with children. The identified factors were associated with different severity levels of food insecurity. Likelihood of experiencing different levels of food insecurity was affected by individual characteristics of the respondent as well as characteristics of the household. The influence of sociodemographic variables varied among the ELCSA dimensions. Household income had the largest influence on all dimensions, which indicates a strong relationship between income and food insecurity. These compounds show several interesting properties such as ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity along the c axis, and photoconductivity. Moreover, BiSI is a potential semiconductor material for room-temperature gamma and x-ray detection, given its band gap of 1.57 eV and its high density, 6.41 g cm−3. In this work we present BiSI nanostructures synthesized by the solvothermal method with the intention of using them for ionizing radiation detection. The solvent was varied to study its influence in morphology, particle size and size distribution. Three different conditions were tested, using either water, monoethylene glycol and a mixture of both solvents. Nanostructures were characterized by XRD to determine the phase obtained and reaction completeness; TEM was used to observe nanostructures morphology, size, size distribution and crystallinity; and finally FT-IR diffuse reflectance was used to study monoethylene glycol presence in the samples. Nanorods in the range of 100–200 nm width were obtained in all samples, but round nanoparticles of around 10 nm in diameter were also detected in samples synthesized only with monoethylene glycol. Samples synthesized in monoethylene glycol were used to fabricate pellets to construct detectors. The detectors responded to ionizing radiation and a resistivity in the order of 1013 Ω cm was estimated. This work proposes, to our knowledge, the first study of BiSI for its application in ionizing radiation detection. Unlike the case in Mediterranean countries, where olive oil consumption is driven by habit or tradition, in a population where olive oil consumption rates are considerably low, it appears reasonable to suppose that the initial decision to buy a fairly expensive product—as is the case with olive oil in the Uruguayan market—may result from an individual’s overall interest in health-related issues and/or their acquaintance with relevant nutritional properties of the particular product—in this case, olive oil. Consumer subjective and objective knowledge, interest in health-related issues, and demographic variables were studied for their potential relationship (explanatory capacity) with olive oil consumption frequency, using a sample of 256 inhabitants of Montevideo (Uruguay). Several of the studied variables were found to relate to olive oil consumption, such as subjective and objective knowledge, age, education level, marital status, and interest in health-related issues. Subjective knowledge was found to have the highest explanatory capacity. An increase in subjective knowledge is therefore expected to lead to an increase in consumption frequency among regular olive oil consumers, while it may also encourage less frequent or non-consumers to purchase olive oil and become acquainted with the product. The aims of the present work were to study the crystallization of lactose in dulce de leche and to evaluate the influence of temperature on this process. Samples of approximately 1 g were placed in plastic containers and stored at –5, 5, 20 and 35°C for 25 days. Lactose crystal and lactose crystal agglomerate numbers and size were measured by using an optical microscope. Results suggested that stirring and placing a small sample of dulce de leche in a small container induced lactose crystallization. Lower storage temperatures resulted in an increase of crystal and agglomerate number but in a decrease of crystal and agglomerate size. The effect of temperature on crystal and agglomerate growth rates could be attributed to the effect of temperature on viscosity, as lower temperatures resulted in decreased crystal mobility in dulce de leche and therefore reduced crystal and agglomerate growth rate. The aim of the present work was to study the influence of temperature on sensory and microbiological qualities, and on shelf life of butterhead lettuce leaves in passive modified atmosphere packages. Butterhead lettuce was washed and placed under ambient air in 30 ¥ 40 cm polypropylene bags, and stored at 5, 10 and 15C. A first-order equation was obtained for the development of the evaluated appearance sensory attributes as a function of storage time. For all the evaluated storage temperatures, microbiological shelf lives (14, 17 and 42 days at 5, 10 and 15C) were higher than estimated sensory shelf lives (8, 14 and 26 days at 5, 10 and 15C), showing that shelf life of lettuce in passive modified atmosphere packages was limited by sensory properties and not by microbial growth. The present work reports a new group of heterogeneous catalysts with a 3D structure, CuLnIDA, {[Cu3Ln2(IDA)6]·8H2O} (Ln: LaIII, GdIII or YbIII), with an organic linker (H2IDA: iminodiacetic acid). Different sets of O2 pressure and time were used in order to obtain the optimal reaction conditions at 75 °C. The reaction was found to depend on the [aldehyde]/[substrate] ratio. The best results, with a conversion of 73% for CuLaIDA as the catalyst, were obtained for the smallest ratio of 0.2. Finally, the importance of the pore size was analysed by comparing the catalytic activity of the as formed catalyst with that of the thermally activated one. The conversion increased ca. 26–35% for the different catalysts when they were previously activated. In addition, the selectivity increased towards cyclohexenone. The use of molecular oxygen as the oxidizing agent in a system where an auxiliary solvent is not used, as the cyclohexene substrate and products play the role of a solvent, permitted us to generate a more friendly environmental system for the oxidation of cycloalkenes under mild conditions. To study the influence of the emulsion sign in phenytoin bioavailability two emulsions (w/o and o/w) were prepared. Bioavailability studies were carried out with both emulsions in Wistar male rats. The study was of a randomized two-way cross over design. A radiotracer technique was chosen as analytical procedure due to the small blood sample collected. 14C-phenytoin was synthesized with a high yield and suitable radiochemical purity. It is concluded from a biopharmaceutic point of view that the emulsion sign does not seem to affect the amount of phenytoin absorbed as it is shown through the comparison of the areas under curve up to 24 h. An emulsion with oil as an external phase is responsible of a longer absorption taking into account the apparent elimination constant rates. This investigation was designed to determine the influence of the estrous cycle on the response of ovarian smooth muscle to oxytocin. Muscular activity in vivo was studied by recording intraovarian pressure. Intra-aortic injections of oxytocin were given to the rats at all stages of the estrous cycle. The effect of oxytocin was evaluated by the number of responding ovaries and the magnitude of the responses. According to these parameters, a greater response was observed during proestrus, compared with the other cycle stages. The significance of these results is discussed. Neutral β-galactosidases (from E. coli and K. lactis) were bound to glutaraldehyde-agarose (Glut-agarose) through amino groups, and to thiolsulfinate-agarose (TSI-agarose) through thiol groups. In general, TSI-gels exhibited higher yields after immobilization (60–85%) than Glut-gels (36–40%). The kinetic parameters of the enzymes bound to TSI-gels (particularly those with lower concentration of active groups) were less affected than those of the Glut-gels. This might indicate that the binding to TSI-agarose is more conservative of the protein conformation. However, the Glut-derivatives exhibited in general better thermal and solvent stabilities than TSI-derivatives. The stability of the derivatives was studied in the presence of ethanol, dioxane and acetone (18% v/v). The stabilization of the immobilized enzymes, for some of the solvents assayed, was evidenced by the existence of final very stable enzyme states with high residual activities, thus allowing the utilization of the derivatives in the presence of organic cosolvents. The nitrito to nitro spontaneous isomerization reaction of the complexes [Co(MeNH2)5(ONO)]2+, cis-[Co(MeNH2)(NH3)4(ONO)]2+, trans-[Co(MeNH2)(NH3)4(ONO)]2+, trans-[Co(en)2(NH3)(ONO)]2+, trans-[Co(en)2(MeNH2)(ONO)]2+, trans-[CoL14(ONO)]2+ and cis-[CoL14(ONO)]2+ has been studied as a function of temperature and pressure. The corresponding base-catalyzed reactions of the systems with monodentate ligands have also been studied as a function of temperature and pressure. The results produce thermal and baric activation parameters that can be as a whole related to an ordered expansion to go to the transition state. This is particularly true for the (N)5 macrocyclic L14 systems (L14=6-methyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6-amine) where the importance of hydrogen bonding becomes evident as for related studies. For systems with a high trans influence the results indicate a clear increase of the degree of dissociation to go to the transition state, very much in line with what has been observed for previously studied substitution reactions. Thus, the results agree with the fact that the nitrito to nitro isomerization reactions, in spite of being of intramolecular nature as established by very clear results, follow a reactivity pattern very similar to that observed for the substitution reactions of neutral ligands on the same complexes. That is, the transition state of the process has a high resemblance to that of the dissociatively activated substitution reactions of the Co(III) complexes. This manuscript reports a comprehensive study of the stability and magnetism in graphene multivacancy systems, using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, by means of the concept of the complemen- tary figure, i.e. the sequence of carbon atoms removed to produce these defected graphene structures. We studied the role of the relative positions of the pentagonal rings that form after optimization in the result- ing defected graphene structure, the occurrence of dangling bonds, their steric hindrance and the magnetic arrangements formed. The results here reported give an interesting approach to understand complex multivacancy graphene systems and contribute to this field by going further in the use of the complemen- tary figure to characterize and predict the properties of such systems.
