Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Different phenytoin emulsions were prepared with oily components chosen according to their kinetic partition properties. Due to their high stability and suitable sign |b two emulsions were selected. Emulsion EI showed a higher bioavailability than an aqueous suspension of this drug |b as was observed in a preliminary study with plasma phenytoin levels. This result was reproduced in a urine study |b in which non-conjugated p-hydroxy phenyl phenytoin (p-HPPH) was quantified. Bioequivalence was found after El and E2 administration |b determining the recovery percentage of metabolite p-HPPH in urine at 24 and 48 h. Bioavailability studies were carried out with two pharmaceuticals. The study was of a randomized two-way crossover design.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)(CH3)2 SO]3+ and trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)(CH3) NCHO]3+ ions are prepared by Ag+-induced solvolysis of trans-[Co(NH3)4(NH2 CH3)X]2+ (X = Cl or Br) complexes in dimethylsulphoxide or dimethylformamide. The complexes were characterized by electronic, IR and 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Both, dimethylsulphoxide and dimethylformamide are bonded through the oxygen atom. The trans-complexes obtained are not contaminated with the cis-isomers.

Selective acetylation of 1 at C-28 afforded the monoacetate 2 |b which was oxidized to the 3-oxo compound 8. H,D exchange at C-2 in 8 followed by reduction with LiAIH4 led to [2-2H]-betulin (5). Reduction of 8 with NaBD4 or LiAID4 yielded [3-2H]betulin (6) besides different amounts of the respective 3alfa-hydroxy compound 7. For the introduction ofa CD2 or 13CH2 unit at C-29 betulin diacetate 4 was ozonolyzed to give the known compound 10 |b which was treated either with CD2Br2,Zn,and TiCl4 in THF to yield the [29-2H2]compound 11 or with [13C]methyltriphenylphosphonium iodide and potassium tert-butoxide to afford the [29-13C]-labeled compund 11. Solvolysis of 11 and 13 with methanol and potassium carbonate afforded the desired compounds [29-2H2]betulin (12)and [29-13C] betulin (14).

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The affinity of sweet potato Beta-amylase toward two kinds of thiophilic adsorbents [the so-called thiophilic or T-gel and 3-(2-pyridylsulphido)-2-hydroxypropylagarose or PyS-gel] was demonstrated. Enzime adsorption on both gels was promoted by antichaotropic salts. Lower salt requirements and higher protein recoveries were observed for the PyS gel |b even though its ligand concentration was half that of T-gel. For the former gel |b the effectiveness series for sulphates was Na2SO4>(NH4)2SO4>K2SO4>MgSO4. Based on the thiophilic character exhibited by the pure sweet potato Beta-amylase and the reversibility of the salt effects |b a new method for its purification from crude extracts was developed.

Este es un cuadro generalmente benigno que tiende a la autocuración en la gran mayoría de los casos. Por otra parte |b existe el riesgo de la infección trasplacentaria. Se infecta el 40 de los fectos cuyas madres contraen la infección transplacentaria.

Examination of enzymatic digests of samples of the crux diaphragm obtained at abbatoirs in Montevideo Uruguay |b indicated that 57.2 porcent of 269 pigs weighing 90-140 Kg were infected with Sarcocystis sp. The morphology of sarcocystis in H and E stained sections indicated that they were Sarcocystis miescheriana.

En los libros clásicos de Fisicoquímica el espacio dedicado a la termodinámica de las celdas electroquímicas suele ser muy reducido. A consecuencia de ésto las deducciones se simplifican en exceso de modo que si bien las conclusiones son correctas los pasos que conducen a ellas o están equivocados o llevan suposiciones implícitas que no se aclaran. En este trabajo se estudian conceptos como reversibilidad y espontaneidad aplicados a las celdas electroquímicas a los efectos de que los estudiantes puedan llenar el vacío que encuentran en los textos usuales.

Los jabones formados por sales solubles de sodio y/o potasio de ácidos grasos precipitan con los cationes polivalentes presentes en el agua dura. La formación de estas sales insolubles implica un gasto innecesario de jabón antes de que su acción detergente pueda tener lugar. Este trabajo es ilustrativo del fenómeno y permite evaluar la capacidad de los diferentes jabones para hacer espuma en presencia de sales de calcio. Está pensado para que pueda ser realizado por estudiantes de nivel universitario.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The advent of techniques of chemical processing (hidrogenation and interesterification) and physical processing (fractionation) provides the manufacturer the capacity of modifying one or many physicochemical properties of an oil or fat. In the present paper the influence of the chemical interesterification and thermal fractionation without solvent on the physical properties (melting point |b solid fat index) of the products obtained by partial hydrogenation of soybean oil is studied. Properties of mixtures of partially hydrogenated soybean oil and totally hydrogenated coconout oil are also determined. The examples studied show that knowing the changes produced by current modification methods is useful to design fatty products for specific purposes.

A summary of the resource.
The solvent crystallization and the urea complexation of the Uruguayan fur seal oil (Arctocephalus australis Zim.) |b in order to obtain enriched omega-3 PUFA's concentrates were studied. The fractionation at -6 grC of fur seal oil or its fatty acids dissolved in ethanol or acetone |b is not suitable to obtain a PUFA's concentrate. Ethanol as a solvent and a two steps process (the second step consists of the addition of urea to the obtained NUCF) is the most useful procedure to obtain a concentrate of high PUFA's content using urea complexation of the free fatty acids from marine oils. When the concentrate is obtained from fur seal fatty acids |b the total PUFA's content is of 90 per cent with an overall yield of 17 per cent. The recovery efficiency of total PUFA's is 78 per cent. The procedure is very simple and relatively cheap.

During the measurement of noise derivativ espectra in in the UV/visible region |b the occurence of positive bias that increased with the noise level was observed. The possible influence of the peack-finding algorithm was suspected |b and when this factor was investigated |b the data collected suggested tha this was indeed the cause of the bias. The authors call the attention of the potential users of derivative spectrophotometry to the existence of bias sources not usually taken into account.

During spring 2012, massive honeybee mortality was observed within 2000 beehives in southwest Uruguay. The incident was presumed to be due to pesticide applications in the hives surroundings. To find the causative agent, bees were analyzed by gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, employing a method reported by our group that has been expanded to 39 compounds. The new scope includes parathion-methyl, which was found at an average 0.48 μg bee−1, ten times higher than the LD50 for bees. Parathion-methyl is only allowed to be sold as microcapsules, a slow release formulation type with 80–50 μm particle diameter. Surprisingly, it was stated that parathion-methyl microcapsules were applied in the zone but 1000–2000 m ahead from the affected hives. This fact was not only a confirmation of the distances bees can fly from the hive, but also demonstrated that the microcapsules, mistaken for pollen, were transported to the hive where the toxic was released. Although microcapsules have environmental advantages as a pesticide delivery system they can threaten honeybees’ survival.

An increasing global concern regarding energy saving and a growing pharmaceutical interest towards the adoption of industrial continuous processing generate an appropriate scenario for the development of solid dosage forms by moisture activated dry granulation (MADG) processes, which eliminate granulate drying and sizing, and minimize granulation end point control by making it less sensitive to shear and processing time. The aim of this study was to contribute to further enlighten formulation aspects of an attractive granulation process such as MADG, using statistical techniques. A 2^(4-1) fractional factorial design was introduced to study the effect of formulation variables on granulates obtained and on their tablets. Multivariate techniques were applied in the evaluation of the products. Lactose monohydrate and mannitol, povidone K15 and copovidone, and microcrystalline cellulose, partially pregelatinized corn starch and amorphous silica were selected, as diluents, binders and moisture absorbents, respectively. Contact angle and drop penetration time of diluents and moisture absorbents were used to study their wettability. All of the granulates yielded tablets with appropriate aspect and tensile strength, low friability, short disintegration time and in most of the cases, good weight uniformity. The statistical techniques showed the influence of excipient selection in the granulation process. Lactose produced granulates which presented lower median size and more rounded granules, leading to tablets which showed greater weight uniformity than the other diluent mannitol. The binder PVP K15 increased granule mechanical strength, producing finished tablets with higher tensile strength and longer disintegration time than copovidone. The use of a second moisture absorbent improved granulate flowability and contributed to prevent granulate caking. Wettability studies provided useful information for guidance on preliminary excipient selection. In summary, MADG is an innovative and economical process which facilitates quality by design approach.

A summary of the resource.
An increasing global concern regarding energy saving and a growing pharmaceutical interest towards the adoption of industrial continuous processing generate an appropriate scenario for the development of solid dosage forms by moisture activated dry granulation (MADG) processes, which eliminate granulate drying and sizing, and minimize granulation end point control by making it less sensitive to shear and processing time. The aim of this study was to contribute to further enlighten formulation aspects of an attractive granulation process such as MADG, using statistical techniques. A 2^(4-1) fractional factorial design was introduced to study the effect of formulation variables on granulates obtained and on their tablets. Multivariate techniques were applied in the evaluation of the products. Lactose monohydrate and mannitol, povidone K15 and copovidone, and microcrystalline cellulose, partially pregelatinized corn starch and amorphous silica were selected, as diluents, binders and moisture absorbents, respectively. Contact angle and drop penetration time of diluents and moisture absorbents were used to study their wettability. All of the granulates yielded tablets with appropriate aspect and tensile strength, low friability, short disintegration time and in most of the cases, good weight uniformity. The statistical techniques showed the influence of excipient selection in the granulation process. Lactose produced granulates which presented lower median size and more rounded granules, leading to tablets which showed greater weight uniformity than the other diluent mannitol. The binder PVP K15 increased granule mechanical strength, producing finished tablets with higher tensile strength and longer disintegration time than copovidone. The use of a second moisture absorbent improved granulate flowability and contributed to prevent granulate caking. Wettability studies provided useful information for guidance on preliminary excipient selection. In summary, MADG is an innovative and economical process which facilitates quality by design approach.

Labels can largely influence functional foods consumers' purchase decisions. The aim of the work was to study consumers' attention to functional food labels and to evaluate differences between regular and functional products probiotic milk as case study. Four labels were designed considering two types of product (regular milk vs. probiotic milk) and two label backgrounds. Sixty consumers were asked to look at the labels while their eye movements were recorded using an eye-tracker and to complete a word association task. Then, they had to complete eight flicker change detection tasks, involving four different changes on key aspects of the labels (brand, type of product, type of microorganism and health claim) for each label background. Visual processing of the labels was not largely affected by the type of product and label design. Health claims were not comprehensively processed, probably due to the high information density of this area. Besides, consumers' health-related associations were generated by graphic design and not by the functional aspect of the products, suggesting that graphic design plays a key role in shaping health-related associations. Recommendations for the design of functional food labels are discussed.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis, agente etiológico de la tuberculosis, representa un importante problema de salud pública a nivel global. El genoma de M. tuberculosis codifica 11 Ser/Thr quinasas “de tipo eucariota” denominadas Pkns (PknA a PknL), ocho de las cuales se encontraron expresadas durante la infección, según datos que surgen de análisis proteómicos y transcriptómicos. En particular una de ellas, PknG, cumple un rol tanto en el metabolismo de las micobacterias como en la patogénesis, y ha cobrado gran relevancia como una de las moléculas centrales para la sobrevida de la bacteria dentro del hospedero. Desde el punto de vista estructural esta es una quinasa singular, ya que además del dominio catalítico posee otros dominios de función aún poco caracterizada (rubredoxina en el N-terminal y un motivo repetido tetratricopéptido en la región C-terminal). Si bien la importancia de esta quinasa ha sido reconocida hace ya más de una década, al día de hoy se desconocen los mecanismos moleculares subyacentes a su acción, los sustratos fosforilables tanto en la bacteria como en el hospedero, los mecanismos de activación/inhibición de la misma y las señales que los desencadenan. En el presente trabajo nos propusimos contribuir a la elucidación del rol fisiológico de PknG y su regulación en las micobacterias. Para ello caracterizamos el papel de los distintos dominios de PknG sobre su actividad enzimática, e identificamos nuevos mediadores y sustratos en las vías de señalización mediadas por esta quinasa. Además reportamos un nuevo inhibidor de PknG que actúa sobre un dominio extracatalítico de la quinasa y que representa un nuevo mecanismo para inhibir este importante factor de virulencia. Nuestros resultados indican que el dominio rubredoxina cumple un papel en la regulación de la actividad de esta quinasa. Estudios interactómicos nos permiten además postular la participación de PknG en la regulación del metabolismo bacteriano y la síntesis de la pared celular. En particular, esta enzima estaría encargada de la fina regulación tendiente a mantener el balance entre la síntesis y la degradación de intermediarios nitrogenados en la bacteria.

A summary of the resource.
The myocardial perfusion agent technetium(2-carbomethoxy-2-isocyano-propane)6(99mTc-CPI) is unique from other cationic technetium isonitrile complexes in that it exhibits moderate washout from the heart and rapid hepatobiliary clearance in animal models and human volunteers. Dynamic imaging and HPLC analysis were performed in humans and guinea pigs to outline the pharmacological basis of its pharmacokinetics. It is proposed that the heart washout occurring after hydrolysis produces a neutral compound which is no longer retained by the negative cytosolic and mitochondrial membrane potentials in myocardial tissue.

A summary of the resource.
In a previous paper |b the authors studied from a statistical point of view the classical scheme for cation analysis using H2S. They showed that some unknown solutions were more difficult for students to identify than others. Here |b a similar study is applied to the H2S-free technique. In this analysis |b the study of each cation was carried out independently without taking into account the other cations present in the solutions.

Presentation of the first data obtained from April to November, 1991 with the available resources. Determination of the pH, nitrates, sulfates, lead, cadmium, copper and zinc in samples of rainwater collected in the Cerro Largo department and data from rainwater collected in some other similar agricultural regions of Uruguay to make comparisons. Meteorological and atmospheric SO2 levels data are given as background information

A summary of the resource.
Solidagenone |b there are two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit which are almost identical. The A ring in both molecules are slightly distorted chairs. The B rings have a sofa conformation. The two fused rings show a cis form of coupling. Despite the disorder both furan rings are planar. The hydroxyl groups are involved in hydrogen bonds with the carbonyl O atoms.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Lipid content and composition of raw and cooked Southwest Atlantic hake (Merluccius hubbsi) roe were studied. Raw hake roe was high in lipids (6.6 per cent on a dry weight basis). The major lipids were waxes (27.6 per cent) |b triacylglycerols (42.0 per cent) |b cholesterol (5.7 per cent) and phospholipids (14.0 per cent). Cooking roes in water does not change these values significantly. The fatty acid composition is characteristic of marine oils with a total amount of 45 per cent of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Hake roes constitute a valid alternative to enrich PUFA in the normal diet
