Las catinonas sint&eacute;ticas son drogas estimulantes de s&iacute;ntesis, comercializadas en el mercado ilegal por sus propiedades estimulantes<br />y perturbadoras del sistema nervioso central, para su uso recreativo, solas, o como adulterantes de coca&iacute;na y derivados<br />anfetam&iacute;nicos. A nivel mundial existe un n&uacute;mero creciente de reportes de intoxicaciones agudas y complicaciones por<br />consumo de estas sustancias. En Uruguay fueron detectadas por primera vez en el a&ntilde;o 2015, existiendo una informaci&oacute;n<br />epidemiol&oacute;gica muy limitada. Las catinonas sint&eacute;ticas no se detectan por las t&eacute;cnicas inmunocromatogr&aacute;ficas disponibles en<br />los laboratorios de los servicios de urgencias de nuestro pa&iacute;s. Se describe el primer caso de intoxicaci&oacute;n por una catinona<br />sint&eacute;tica (dibutilona) en Uruguay, en un paciente de 45 a&ntilde;os, por consumo de un polvo vendido como &ldquo;&eacute;xtasis&rdquo;, presentando<br />como complicaci&oacute;n un s&iacute;ndrome coronario agudo, con una buena evoluci&oacute;n posterior. La confirmaci&oacute;n diagn&oacute;stica se realiz&oacute;<br />mediante su detecci&oacute;n en orina por cromatograf&iacute;a de gases acoplada a espectrometr&iacute;a de masas. La estructura qu&iacute;mica de<br />la dibutilona y su mecanismo de acci&oacute;n explican las manifestaciones cl&iacute;nicas y la complicaci&oacute;n isqu&eacute;mica por vasoespasmo<br />coronario. Excessive sugar intake is a global public health concern, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) represent one of the main sources of added sugar in the diet. In this sense, the inclusion of front of pack (FOP) nutritional schemes and food reformulation are strategies that could contribute to reduce sugar consumption and improve population health status. The aims of this work were to evaluate adults and children&rsquo;s choice of sugar-reduced drinks in the context of the implementation of FOP nutrition labelling under different evaluation conditions, and to compare the influence of two FOP nutrition labelling schemes: the traffic-light system (TLS) and nutritional warnings. For that, 400 adults and 400 children (6&ndash;12 years old) divided in 2 groups (n = 200) each chose samples of grape nectar or chocolate flavoured milk (control and two sugar reduction levels) featuring different FOP nutritional schemes, under three experimental conditions: (a) blind, tasting the samples without any information, (b) expected, looking at the packages, and (c) informed, looking at the packages and tasting the samples. In each experimental condition, participants were asked to choose one of the three products. Both FOP schemes encouraged adults and children&rsquo;s to choose for healthier products under the expected condition. In the case of adults, nutritional warnings outperformed the traffic light system in the task involving grape nectars. However, when participants tasted the products (blind and informed conditions), choices were defined by their sensory characteristics and the control samples without sugar reduction were the most frequently selected. Highly variable drugs have been defined as drugs with a residual variability of more than 30% in terms of the ANOVA coefficient of variation. Different approaches have been proposed during the last years to deal with this problem but the topic remains controversial. Itraconazole, a highly variable drug, has low bioavailability with a high CYP3A4 presystemic biotransformation. Also, it has a very poor aqueous solubility which is very dependent on the pH of the dissolution medium. The pregnane X receptor (PXR) has been shown to mediate the genomic effects of progesterone and estradiol in the expression of the cytochrome P-450 gene family, which plays an important role in the metabolism of hormones and xenobiotics. During the menstrual cycle both hormone concentrations vary, providing a rationale for the more variable CYP3A4 activity in women. The analysis of the data of an itraconazole bioequivalence study involving 24 healthy volunteers (12 men and 12 women) carried out by other investigators enables us to conclude that women have less oral bioavailability and more variable AUC than men. Low bioavailability seems to be related with the higher stomach pH observed in women and variability with the aforementioned menstrual cycle incidence on both pH and CYP3A4 expression. The lower variability observed in men made it possible to discriminate differences in AUC&rsquo;s variability displayed by each brand. In this work, the job-sorting technique, in combination with Aaker&rsquo;s personality scale, was applied to the study of cream liqueur brand image in Uruguay and Costa Rica. Eight jobs with different levels of intellectual complexity, salary and physical demands were selected. In each of the two countries, three (two imported and one locally made) liqueurs were presented to 90 consumers with similar socio-demographic characteristics. Respondents were told to select the job, profession or occupation (JPO) that best fitted each brand. After JPO selection, respondents were asked to select from a list of 88 personality traits all the words that they considered applicable to each JPO selected. The JPOs associated with the different brands showed no similarity between Uruguayan and Costa Rican respondents, but the personality traits associated with the two imported brands were similar in both countries, supporting the use of JPOs as metaphors in the study of brand images. The brand image of locally made liqueurs was associated with traits that differed clearly from those of the imported brands. An alternative to mitigate the consumption of fossil fuels is the use of biomass as an energy source. In this sense, the rural sector in Latin America has great potential due to its multiple biomass sources. For this reason, this study aims to analyze potential technologies related to the production of energy from biomass and its application in the Latin American rural sector. To achieve this, four key processes are analyzed. First is biomass conditioning through solar dryers. Next are the thermochemical processes that allow for their transformation into biofuels, for which the pyrolysis and the hydrothermal methods were selected due to the flexibility of the products obtained. Subsequently, cogeneration is studied to produce electrical and thermal energy from biomass or its derivatives. Finally, to close the CO2 cycle, a balance of CO2 fixation in a forest plantation is presented as an example of carbon accumulated in biomass. The literature systematic review allowed us to determine that the technologies mentioned in this work have different degrees of implementation in the Latin American rural sector. However, they have great potential to be applied on a large scale in the region, making it possible to adapt energy production to climate change and improve the life quality of its inhabitants. Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a ciliopathy characterized by retinal degeneration, obesity, polydactyly, renal disease and mental retardation. CCDC28B is a BBS-associated protein that we have previously shown plays a role in cilia length regulation whereby its depletion results in shortened cilia both in cells and Danio rerio (zebrafish). At least part of that role is achieved by its interaction with the mTORC2 component SIN1, but the mechanistic details of this interaction and/or additional functions that CCDC28B might play in the context of cilia remain poorly understood. Here we uncover a novel interaction between CCDC28B and the kinesin 1 molecular motor that is relevant to cilia. CCDC28B interacts with kinesin light chain 1 (KLC1) and the heavy chain KIF5B. Notably, depletion of these kinesin 1 components results in abnormally elongated cilia. Furthermore, through genetic interaction studies we demonstrate that kinesin 1 regulates ciliogenesis through CCDC28B. We show that kinesin 1 regulates the subcellular distribution of CCDC28B, unexpectedly, inhibiting its nuclear accumulation, and a ccdc28b mutant missing a nuclear localization motif fails to rescue the phenotype in zebrafish morphant embryos. Therefore, we uncover a previously unknown role of kinesin 1 in cilia length regulation that relies on the BBS related protein CCDC28B. We have studied the reduction reactions of two cytosolic human peroxiredoxins (Prx) in their disulfide form by three thioredoxins (Trx; two human and one bacterial), with the aim of better understanding the rate and mechanism of those reactions, and their relevance in the context of the catalytic cycle of Prx. We have developed a new methodology based on stoppedflow and intrinsic fluorescence to study the bimolecular reactions, and found rate constants in the range of 105&ndash;106 M 1 s 1 in all cases, showing that there is no marked kinetic preference for the expected Trx partner. By combining experimental findings and molecular dynamics studies, we found that the reactivity of the nucleophilic cysteine (CN) in the Trx is greatly affected by the formation of the Prx&ndash;Trx complex. The protein&ndash;protein interaction forces the CN thiolate into an unfavorable hydrophobic microenvironment that reduces its hydration and results in a remarkable acceleration of the thiol-disulfide exchange reactions by more than three orders of magnitude and also produces a measurable shift in the pKa of the CN. This mechanism of activation of the thiol disulfide exchange may help understand the reduction of Prx by alternative reductants involved in redox signaling. Electronic structure calculations have been performed to determine the thermochemistry and kinetics of the reaction between OH and the radicals of the S enantiomer of the herbicide Metolachlor, 2-chloro-N-(2-methyl-6-ethylphenyl)-N(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl) acetamide (MC), produced by photoinduced breaking of the C&ndash;Cl bond. Both density functional and ab initio composite methods were employed to calculate the structure of reactants, intermediates, transition states and products, in gas phase and in aqueous solution. In the present work, new kinetics to describe the creaming stability of oil-in-water emulsions determined by backscattering measurements (BS) is proposed. The emulsions assayed exhibited a different backscattering profiles regarding creaming destabilization, hyperbolic and sigmoid one. Hyperbolic behavior can be described by a second order kinetics, where kh could be equaled to a rate constant that describes the creaming process and its values would indicate the stability of emulsions. While for the sigmoid BS pattern, kinetics with two terms, is adequate to describe the creaming process in contrast to kinetics previously reported in the literature. The kh value has the same meaning as before, and ks indicates the delaying effect on the creaming rate. Trypanosoma cruzi invades a diversity of nucleated cells in the mammalian host. Macrophages are among the first cells to be parasitized and, after activation by inflammatory stimuli, they participate in the control of infection. However, some parasites manage to evade the immune response and establish a chronic infection in differentiated cells. L-arginine is located at the crossroads of divergent routes that produce metabolites, including nitric oxide and polyamines, which influence the outcome (i.e. resolution or progression) of infection.
