The three novel mononuclear copper(II) complexes with dipicolinate and pyridyl-based ligands [Cu(dipic)(L)(OH2)] (L=4-picoline, vinylpyridine, 4-styrylpyridine; dipic2-=dipicolinate) were afforded and structurally characterized. X-ray diffraction studies accounted for slight distorted square-pyramidal structures in which the dianion dipic2- acts as a tridentate ligand in a mer-fashion, the N-donor species occupy an in-plane position, and a water molecule was detected apically coordinated. To assess the effect of the nature of the pyridyl-substituent (para position) on electronic properties, other complexes were also synthesized: [Cu(dipic)(py)(OH2)], [{Cu(dipic)(OH2)}2(μ-pyz)] and [{Cu(dipic)(OH2)}(μ-pypy){Cu(dipic)}] (py=pyridine, pyz=pyrazine, pypy=(E)-1,2-bis(pyridine-4-yl)ethane). Absorptive behavior in the UV-VIS region was studied in solution and in the solid state (reflectance measurements). Additionally, geometry and population analyses were conducted by means of DFT calculations. Electronic UV-VIS spectra were simulated for both dinuclear complexes in the framework of the TD-DFT methodology to assign the origin of the absorption bands.

A summary of the resource.
The objective of this work was to obtain water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions with polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) as emulsifier and to study the effect of the addition of calcium in the dispersed aqueous phase on the stability of these systems. Emulsions were formulated with 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0% w/w PGPR and 10% w/w water containing calcium chloride at varied concentrations or other salts (calcium lactate or carbonate; sodium, magnesium or potassium chloride). The stability of these systems was studied with a vertical scan analyzer during 15 days; coalescence and sedimentation were observed as simultaneous destabilization processes. The increase of PGPR concentration and/or calcium chloride content gave more stable emulsions. The stabilizing effect of calcium salt was attributed to the diminution of the water droplets size, the decrease of the attractive force between water droplets and the increase of the adsorption density of the emulsifier. The viscoelastic parameters of the interfacial film were decreased with increasing calcium and PGPR concentrations. Calcium chloride produced a higher increase of stability than calcium salts with lower dissociation degree. The presence of any assayed salt in the aqueous phase also allowed the stabilization of w/o emulsions with higher water contents.

A summary of the resource.
The volatile compounds of 18 yerbamate (YM) commercial brands fromArgentina, Brazil, P.araguay and Uruguay were extracted using a Likens–Nickerson simultaneous distillation–extraction (SDE) apparatus, and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Results showed that a total of 35 major volatile compounds were identified by GC–MS; among them, norisoprenoid compounds. A principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out in order to ascertain the degree of differentiation between samples and which compounds were involved. The results showed threemain groups of YM corresponding to the places where they are commercialized. The first group (samples from Paraguay and Argentina) correlated positively with 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, octanal and 1-octanol. The second group (YM marketed in Uruguay but produced in Brazil) correlated positively with α- and β-ionone, linalool, nerol, α-terpineol, (Z)-linalool oxide and the aliphatic hydrocarbons undecane, dodecane and heptadecane. The third group (YM produced and marketed in Brazil) correlated positively with 2,4-heptadienal isomers, (E)-linalool oxide and β-cyclocitral. Through a preference test, one commercial brand was selected to be analyzed by gas chromatography–olfactometry (GC–O). Sixteen odor active compounds were perceived by GC–O analysis. It seems that the norisoprenoid compounds and components produced by fatty acid degradation play a vital role in the special aroma of yerba mate.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The actual state of the art in the reduction of perrhenate ions on noble metals is reviewed and discussed. Also, with the aim of contributing to better knowledge of this process, results of several experiments are presented. For the first time, spectroscopic evidence on the nature of the deposited rhenium layer on Pt and Rh and the detection of an intermediate in the reduction pathway toward metallic rhenium is provided. The role of the substrate in the electroreduction of perrhenate ions in aqueous acid media is emphasized, because it is directly associated with the formation of different H-containing species as reducing agents. Thus, those metals capable of adsorbing H atoms are able to reduce ReO− 4 to ReO2 by Had at potentials more positive than that of the hydrogen evolution reaction. Moreover, Had reacts with the ReO2 layer previously deposited, resulting in the formation of Re(III)-soluble species, which subsequently undergo disproportionation to Re and ReO2. For metals that are not capable of adsorbing H, i.e., Au, molecular hydrogen is the reducing agent, leading to the formation of metallic Re. In addition, ReO− 4 is chemically reduced to metallic Re by hydride

A summary of the resource.
The lipid content and the fatty acid composition of the fillets of the six fishes burriqueta (Menticirrhus americanus), white croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), black drum (Pogonias cromis), Brazilian menhaden (Brevoortuaspp.), pampano (Parona signata), and king weakfish (Microdon ancylodon) of the Rı́o de la Plata in Uruguay were analyzed and evaluated as sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids in comparison with fish oil capsules and hake (Merluccius hubbsi) liver oil. The lipid content of the fish fillets was found to vary over a wide range (0.56 to 13.6 g/100 g fillet), while the protein level varied very little (19.2 to 20.7 g/100g fillet). The percentage of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) exceeded that of the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in all the fish species analyzed. The actual content of these acids in the fillets indicated that Brazilian menhaden, burriqueta, and pampano provide the recommended daily intake of 1 g of EPA + DHA with reasonable amounts of fillet. The energy input for a daily gram intake of EPA + DHA provided by fish fillets ranged from 300 kJ for fatty fishes to more than 3000 kJ for lean fishes. For the same dose of EPA + DHA, the energy input provided by fish oil capsules is less than 250 kJ. Hake liver oil is a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids and a potential raw material for the production of fish oil capsules.

In the present paper two systems for teaching evaluation carried out at the University of Uruguay (Universidad de la República) are described: the Teaching Evaluation Program at the School of Chemistry and the System for Teaching Evaluation at the School of Engineering. Details are presented for both programs, as well as primary results since their beginning in 2004. The general impact on staff members is discussed.

A summary of the resource.
The results of a study on the use of Hansch�s series design, cluster methodology, for the generation of new benzo[1,2-c]1,2, 5-oxadiazole N-oxide derivatives as antitrypanosomal compounds are described. In vitro activity of these compounds was tested against Tulahuen 2 strain of Trypanosoma cruzi. Clearly, the Hansch methodology allowed identifying two cluster-substituents suitable for further structural modifications. The most effective drugs, derivatives 11, 18, and 21, with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of the same order as that of the reference drug, represent an excellent structural point of chemical modifications for the design of future drugs. Preliminary results from the study of the mechanism of action of these benzofuroxans point to perturbation of the mitochondrial electron chain, inhibiting parasite respiration.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The absolute configuration of the title compound, C10H16O4, determined as 3aS,4S,5R,7aR on the basis of the synthetic pathway, was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The mol-ecule contains a five- and a six-membered ring that adopt twisted and envelope conformations, respectively. The dihedral angle between the mean planes of the rings is 76.80 (11)° as a result of their cis-fusion. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by two pairs of O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming chains along [010]. These chains are further connected by weaker C-H⋯O inter-actions along [100], creating (001) sheets that inter-act only by weak van der Waals forces.

A study of the Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction on Cu2MnGeS4 magnetic quaternary semiconductor compound with wurtz-stannite-type structure (space group Pmn21) has been done. By considering group theory analysis and by comparing the Raman lines with those obtained from far infrared measurements found in the literature, as well as with experimental and calculated lines for Cu2ZnGeS4, a tentative symmetry assignment of the Raman lines observed for has also been made. The five strongest Raman lines observed at 355, 296, 308, 388 and 408 cm�1 have been assigned to sulphurrelated A1-symmetry modes, and at 170 and 260 cm�1 to the Mn-related A1 modes. Also, lines at 98, 105 and 150 cm�1 are assigned to A2-, B1-, and Mn-related B2-symmetry modes, respectively. In addition, weak lines at 124, 208 and 238 cm�1 were assigned to the orthorhombic GeS secondary phase.

La4BaCu5O13+δ (LBCu) and La6.4Sr1.6Cu8O20±δ (LSCu) oxygen deficient perovskites, synthesized by a Pechini-type gel combustion method, have been investigated as potential cathode materials for IT-SOFC applications. The thermal stability and chemical compatibility with SOFC/PCFC electrolyte materials are examined using X-ray diffraction technique. For both compounds, no structural change is detected in air until 900 °C. The evolution of cell parameters with temperature shows thermal expansion coefficients (TEC) of 17.3 × 10− 6 K− 1 and 12.1 × 10− 6 K− 1 for LBCu and LSCu, respectively. For LBCu, the formation of oxygen vacancies is evidenced between 700 and 900 °C in air. Chemical reactivity tests with several SOFC electrolyte materials reveal a high reactivity of both cuprates with YSZ, GDC and, to a lesser extent, with LSGM. On the other hand, and contrary to what occurs for LSCu, LBCu presents an excellent chemical compatibility with doped barium cerate and zirconate, opening further perspectives for this material as possible SOFC or PCFC cathode. LBCu material presents a quite high electrical conductivity with metallic-type behavior

<div>YBa2Cu3O6+δ (YBC) oxygen deficient perovskite was synthesized by an auto-combustion method and was studied as potential cathode for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IT-SOFC). Synchrotron X-ray thermodiffraction in air shows a phase transition from orthorhombic Pmmm to tetragonal P4/mmm space groups at ~ 425°C. The chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC) electrolyte was investigated in air where certain reactivity was observed above 800 °C. However, the main phase is Ba(Ce1-xYx)O3, a good ionic conductor. The catalytic performance in air was obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements on YBC/GDC/YBC symmetrical cells. The area specific resistance (ASR) values change from 13.66 to 0.14 Ω cm2 between 500 and 800 °C, with activation energy (Ea) of 0.41 eV. The results suggest potential applications of YBC as IT-SOFC cathode.</div>

The mol­ecular structure of the title compound, C20H16N6, contains two benzotriazole units bonded to a benzene nucleus in a meta configuration, forming dihedral angles of 88.74 (11) and 85.83 (10)° with the central aromatic ring and 57.08 (9)° with each other. The three-dimensional structure is controlled mainly by weak C-H...N and C-H...[pi] inter­actions. The mol­ecules are connected in inversion-related pairs, forming the slabs of infinite chains that run along the [-110] and [110] directions.

A summary of the resource.
The absolute configuration, i.e. (3aR,30aR,7aS,70aS), of the title compound, C18H26O4, synthesized via a palladium-catalyzed homocoupling reaction, was determined on the basis of the synthetic pathway and was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The homocoupled molecule is formed by two chemically identical moieties built up from two five- and six-membered fused rings. The supramolecular assembly is controlled mainly by C—H O interactions that lead to the formation of hydrogen-bonded chains of molecules along the [001] direction, while weak dipolar interactions and van der Waals forces hold the chains together in the crystal structure.

A summary of the resource.
Seven cobalt(II) complexes of pyrazole derivatives and dinitrobenzoate ligands were synthesized and characterized. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure was determined for one of the ligands and one of the complexes. The analysis and spectral data showed that all the cobalt complexes had octahedral geometries, which was supported by DFT calculations. The complexes and their free ligands were evaluated against fungal strains of Candida albicans and emerging non-albicans species and epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi. We obtained antifungal activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 31.3 to 250 µg mL-1. The complexes were more active against C. krusei, showing MIC values between 31.25 and 62.5 µg mL-1. In addition, some ligands (L1-L6) and complexes (5 and Co(OAc)2 · 4H2O) significantly reduced the yeast to hypha transition of C. albicans at 500 µg mL-1 (inhibition ranging from 30 to 54%). Finally, the complexes and ligands did not present trypanocidal activity and were not toxic to Vero cells. Our results suggest that complexes of cobalt(II) with ligands derived from pyrazoles and dinitrobenzoate may be an attractive alternative for the treatment of diseases caused by fungi, especially because they target one of the most important virulence factors of C. albicans.

La producción de quesos de leche ovina es una actividad poco desarrollada en Uruguay y carece de una tradición productiva e industrial, pero en los últimos años ha tenido un crecimiento. La leche de oveja posee mayor contenido de sólidos totales y de nutrientes que la leche de vaca, compuestos que pasan a los quesos durante su elaboración. Todos los quesos de leche de oveja uruguayos presentaron altos contenidos de ácidos trans-vaccénico (TVA) y linoleico conjugado (CLA), ácidos grasos benéficos para la salud, con valores superiores a los de los quesos importados estudiados. La determinación de la composición en triglicéridos (TAG) puede ser una herramienta útil para detectar si un queso elaborado con leche de oveja está adulterado con leche de vaca. Los quesos de mayor contenido de ácidos grasos libres (AGL) cortos fueron los que presentaron períodos prolongados de maduración. En todos los quesos, el contenido mayoritario de AGL correspondió a los ácidos grasos de cadena media y larga (de 12:0 a 18:2). Para los ácidos orgánicos (AO) se observó que su contenido es mayor al aumentar el tiempo de maduración de los quesos. De los AO, el contenido de ácido láctico fue el más alto encontrado en la mayoría

Context can be regarded as the situational and temporal conditions in which food choice occurs. Although context has a large effect on consumer perception and choice of food products, it has been mostly overlooked in research exploring the determinants of consumers' food choice. The aims of the present work were to study the influence of purchase and consumption context on motives underlying food choice and to evaluate if gender and age modulate this effect. One hundred and ninety-five consumers from Montevideo (Uruguay) participated in an online survey. They were asked to complete a free-listing task about all the things they take into account when selecting foods in four contexts: purchase, lunch, snacking and dinner. Consumer responses were qualitatively analyzed and grouped into categories and their cognitive salience was determined. Categories were grouped into 10 dimensions: price, health/nutrition, perceived quality, freshness, sensory characteristics, hedonics, convenience, context, variety and satiety. Context had a strong influence on the motives underlying consumer food choices. The dimensions with the highest cognitive salience in the purchase context were price, perceived quality and freshness, while convenience and variety were the most relevant dimensions for the consumption contexts. The effect of context on the salience of the elicited categories was not markedly affected by gender and age.
