Apiculate yeasts from Hanseniaspora genus are predominant on the native flora of grapevines, while Hanseniaspora uvarum is well known for its abundant presence in grapes, it results generally, in detrimental quality effects on wine due to high production of acetic acid. By contrast, Hanseniaspora vineae is better adapted to fermentation, increasing flavor complexity in wines as it has been demonstrated in winemaking practices during the last decade. We obtained a collection of more than 22 different Hanseniaspora vineae strains from which we could detect, by a plating screening method, high and moderate protease activity. In this study, we tested these strains under real winemaking conditions on a Sauvignon blanc white wine must. Results obtained demonstrated that there is an interesting protease active diversity in all H. vineae strains when compared to conventional fermentations conducted by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Four H. vineae strains showed a decrease in wine protein turbidity, up to three times lower than that observed in S. cerevisiae, which imply a significant decrease in the demand for bentonite before bottling. This attribute of some H. vineaestrains should be very attractive at the commercial level to reduce manipulations and flavor removal in the production of delicate white wines such as Sauvignon blanc.

El estudio de compuestos de coordinación polinucleares de metales de transición paramagnéticos ha sido un área de permanente interés en Química Inorgánica y en los últimos años ha conducido a la obtención y caracterización de un número considerable de compuestos denominados clústeres de espín. Se trata de estructuras de nuclearidad intermedia, en las que las interacciones magnéticas entre los iones metálicos se establecen a través de los puentes diamagnéticos que los unen. Algunos clústeres de espín muestran una relajación de la magnetización muy lenta a bajas temperaturas, que origina una histéresis magnética puramente molecular. Estos imanes moleculares (en inglés, single-molecule magnets, SMM) se comportan como nanopartículas magnéticas de forma y tamaño perfectamente definidos, que teóricamente podrían cumplir funciones de almacenamiento de información; presentan propiedades magnéticas únicas y son sistemas ideales para la observación de fenómenos cuánticos como el efecto túnel en la magnetización. Para que un clúster de espín se comporte como un SMM debe presentar un estado electrónico fundamental con un valor de espín (S) elevado, resultante de las interacciones magnéticas de canje entre los iones que constituyen la molécula y una anisotropía axial tipo Ising caracterizada por un valor alto y negativo del parámetro de desdoblamiento a campo cero (D).1 Dado el estado actual del conocimiento, es imposible a priori controlar tanto la nuclearidad del clúster como la naturaleza del estado fundamental o el valor resultante de anisotropía magnética. Es así que la tarea de obtener nuevos clústeres de espín para el estudio de sus propiedades magnéticas y el desarrollo de estrategias adecuadas de síntesis constituyen uno de los desafíos actuales de la Química de Coordinación.

A summary of the resource.
We determined the antiproliferative and nitric oxide (NO)-releasing activity of furoxans and tocopherol analogs–furoxan hybrids by tandem Griess/resazurin/sulforhodamin B assays in HeLa, 253J, T24, and HepG2 cancer cells. In addition, to investigate the NO implications in the inhibition of cell growth, cells were pretreated with the NO scavenger hemoglobin and the genotoxic damage was determined. The compounds 1 and 3 emerged as good anticancer agents for bladder cancer treatment. The NO-releasing activity of these compounds appears to be necessary to obtain the antiproliferative effect. Although compound 1 exerted a DNA damage mechanism of action, compound 3 seemed to act in a different way. The low toxicity levels against normal cell line HaCaT point them out as a very promising scaffold for the further design of new anticancer agents.

Cold tolerance at germination and seedling stage is one of the most seeked traits in Southern Brazilian rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, thus, the availability of improved methods for germplasm assessment is of high importance for breeding programs. The aim of this study was to validate an optimized Average Tolerance Index (ATI) for rice germplasm assessment under cold at germination and early seedling stage. A diverse panel composed by 124 rice accessions was assayed. Four genotypes with known performance under cold were used as controls (two tolerant and two sensitive). The genotypes were sown in roll papers, and evaluated at 13 °C for 28 days (cold stress) and 25 °C for seven days (control). Four traits were measured, germination percentage, coleoptile length, root length and shoot length, which were converted in terms of relative perfor‑ mance (cold/control). A PCA analysis was carried out. The ATI was calculated as a linear combination of all trait’s relative performance, weighted by the importance of each trait in explaining the genetic variability in the set, through including the PC1 vectors as trait coefcients. K means was applied for genotype classifcation. The panel showed expressive genetic variability for performance under low temperature. The ATI successfully distinguished the controls regarding their cold tolerance and allowed the formation of four classes of genotypes, sensitive, moderately sensitive, moderately tolerant and tolerant. The assessment of rice germplasm for cold tolerance at germination and seedling stage through ATI is a viable alternative for the identifcation of tolerant genotypes

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The study aimed at investigating the influence of four variables related to processing technology and formulation on consumer’s choice of fruit juice, and to explore the moderating effect of food technology neophobia (FTN). A choice‐conjoint task was implemented considering four variables: processing technology, added sugar, preservatives and cold pressing. Sixteen pairs of labels were presented to 369 Brazilian consumers to that indicate which of the products they would purchase. Then, they answered the FTN scales and a socio‐demographic questionnaire. Data were analysed using a logit model with random parameters. Results showed that cold pressing, pressurisation and the claims ‘no added sugar’ and ‘no preservatives’ had a positive effect on consumers’ choices, whereas the claim ‘not pressurised’ had a negative effect. The FTN moderated the effect of the variables on participants' choices of fruit juices. The main difference between groups of consumers with different level of neophobia (low, medium and high) was related to the effect of information about juice processing.

A summary of the resource.
The surface structure of polycrystalline rhodium electrodes in contact with aqueous sulfuric acid was modified by chemical etching with hot concentrated acid or by applying fast square waves with an upper potential equal to 1.55 V and a lower potential within the –0.75 V to –0.35 V range. Polycrystalline rhodium and chemical etched electrodes were characterized by voltammetry, Cu underpotential deposition (upd) and X-ray diffraction. For electrofaceted surfaces were used voltammetry, Cu upd and SEM, revealing that two modified rhodium electrodes exhibit similar voltammetric characteristics as those found for Rh(111) and Rh(110) single crystals, and a third surface with an equal distribution of (110) and (111) planes. In addition, the upd of Cu on those surfaces corroborated the existence of those crystallographic planes. SEM micrographs show surface structures with a high density of terraces and steps. A mechanism of faceting is proposed

Ibogaine is an atypical psychedelic alkaloid, which has been subject of research due to its reported ability to attenuate drug-seeking behavior. Recent work has suggested that ibogaine effects on alcohol self-administration in rats are related to the release of Glial cell Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF) in the Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA), a mesencephalic region which hosts the soma of dopaminergic neurons. Although previous reports have shown ibogaine's ability to induce GDNF expression in rat midbrain, there are no studies addressing its effect on the expression of GDNF and other neurotrophic factors (NFs) such as Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) or Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in distinct brain regions containing dopaminergic neurons. In this work, we examined the effect of ibogaine acute administration on the expression of these NFs in the VTA, Prefrontal Cortex (PFC), Nucleus Accumbens (NAcc) and the Substantia Nigra (SN). Rats were i.p. treated with ibogaine 20 mg/kg (I20), 40 mg/kg (I40) or vehicle, and NFs expression was analyzed after 3 and 24 h. At 24 h an increase of the expression of the NFs transcripts was observed in a site and dose dependent manner. Only for I40, GDNF was selectively upregulated in the VTA and SN. Both doses elicited a large increase in the expression of BDNF transcripts in the NAcc, SN and PFC, while in the VTA a significant effect was found only for I40. Finally, NGF mRNA was upregulated in all regions after I40, while I20 showed a selective upregulation in PFC and VTA. Regarding protein levels, an increase of GDNF was observed in the VTA only for I40 but no significant increase for BDNF was found in all the studied areas. Interestingly, an increase of proBDNF was detected in the NAcc for both doses. These results show for the first time a selective increase of GDNF specifically in the VTA for I40 but not for I20 after 24 h of administration, which agrees with the effective dose found in previous self-administration studies in rodents. Further research is needed to understand the contribution of these changes to ibogaine's ability to attenuate drug-seeking behavior.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
<p>A practical method is described for the extraction of uranium from monazite sands and its subsequent polarographic determination.</p>
<p>The sample is decomposed by fusion with potassium hydrogen difluoride followed by fusion with potassium pyrosulphate. Uranium is extracted from nitric acid solution with tributyl phosphate in 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, with aluminium nitrate as a salting-out agent, and back-extracted from the organic phase with water.</p>
<p>The final polarographic determination is carried out in 2 M acetic acid-2 M ammonium acetate-0·1 M ascorbic acid solution as supporting electrolyte. Neither a maximum suppressor nor removal of oxygen is needed.</p>
<p>The interference by lead and some factors influencing the extraction of uranium are studied.</p>
<p>The results are reproducible and agree with those obtained by other, more laborious, techniques. The proposed procedure is suitable for the determination of uranium in monazites and monazite sand concentrates containing not less than 0·005 per cent. of uranium oxide, and is superior in speed, reliability and convenience to other methods previously reported.</p>

Esta presentación propone un cambio metodológico en los trabajos experimentales de síntesis en Química Orgánica, mediante la aplicación de la energía de microondas. La comparación de los resultados obtenidos con los correspondientes a los métodos convencionales permiten evidenciar las ventajas de esta técnica: menores tiempos de reacción, altos rendimientos y p de los productos, mayor disponibilidad de tiempo para completar las etapas de síntesis, así como las ventajas económicas y las relacionadas al medio ambiente.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Optimized procedures for the affinity purification of soybean agglutinin (SBA) from soybean flour, and its further immobilization, were developed. Lectin purification on galactosyl-Sepharose yielded 44.563.5 mg of pure SBA/50 g of flour. To prepare SBA adsorbents, the lectin was immobilized onto 1-cyano-4-(dimethylamino)pyridinium tetrafluoroborate (CDAP) activated Sepharose with high yields (77%). Feasibility of the use of this improved SBA adsorbent for affinity purification of Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharides from strain 14 (CPS-14) at laboratory scale was demonstrated. Using SBA-Sepharose adsorbent (7.0 mg lectin per ml), amounts of 6.3 mg of pure CPS-14 per cycle were produced, the adsorbent being reused up to four times without loss of capacity.
