A fast and efficient automated method using a sequential injection analysis (SIA) system, based on the Griess, reaction was developed for the determination of nitrate and nitrite in infant formulas and milk powder. The system enables to mix a measured amount of sample (previously constituted in the liquid form and deproteinized) with the chromogenic reagent to produce a colored substance whose absorbance was recorded. For nitrate determination, an on-line prereduction step was added by passing the sample through a Cd minicolumn. The system was controlled from a PC by means of a user-friendly program. Figures of merit include linearity (r2 > 0.999 for both analytes), limits of detection (0.32mg kg−1 NO3-N, and 0.05 mg kg−1 NO2-N), and precision (sr%) 0.8–3.0. Results were statistically in good agreement with those obtained with the reference ISO-IDF method. The sampling frequency was 30 hour−1 (nitrate) and 80 hour−1 (nitrite) when performed separately. A multicommutated flow system was designed and evaluated for the determination of selenium by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS). It was applied to the determination of total selenium in samples of cow’s milk (fluid and powder) and infant formulae. Linearity was satisfactory in the range up to 27.5 mg L�1 (h ¼ 0.082 C + 0.0033, h ¼ peak-height, absorbance, C ¼ concentration in mg L�1, r2 ¼ 0.999). Detection (3s) and quantification (10s) limits in solution were LD ¼ 0.08 mg L�1 and LQ ¼ 0.27 mg L�1, corresponding to LD ¼ 3.2 mg kg�1 and LQ ¼ 10.8 mg kg�1 in solid samples, and to LD ¼ 0.8 mg L�1, LQ ¼ 2.7 mg L�1 in fluid milk samples. Trueness was verified by analysis (n ¼ 5) of two reference materials (NIST 1549, Non-fat Milk Powder and NIST 1846 Infant Formula). At the 95% significance level, results were statistically equivalent to the certified values. Instrumental precision (sr(%), n ¼ 5) was in the range 1.4% to 11.7%, analytical precision (sr(%), n ¼ 5) being 4.2 and 9.3% respectively for the determination of the above mentioned reference materials. The addition of oxygen-centered radicals to fullerenes has been intensively studied due to their role in cell protection against against hydrogen peroxide induced oxidative damage. However, the analogous reaction of sulfur-centered radicals has been largely overlooked. Herein, we investigate the addition of S-centered radicals to C50, C60, C70, and C100 fullerenes by means of DFT calculations. The radicals assayed were: S, SH, SCH3, SCH2CH3, SC6H5, SCH2C6H5, and the open-disulfide SCH2CH2CH2CH2S. Sulfur, the most reactive species, prefers to be attached to a 66- bond of C60 with a binding energy (Ebind) of 2.4 eV. For the SR radicals the electronic binding energies to C60 are 0.77, 0.74, 0.58, 0.67, and 0.35 eV for SH, SCH3, SCH2CH3, SCH2C6H5, and SC6H5, respectively. The reactivity of C60 toward SR radicals can be increased by lithium doping. For Li@C60, the Ebind is increased by 0.65 eV with respect to C60, but only by 0.33 eV for the exohedral doping. Fullerenes act like free radical sponges. Indeed, the C60-SR Ebind can be duplicated if two radicals are added in ortho or para positions. The enhanced reactivity because of multiple additions is mostly a local effect, although the addition of one radical makes the whole cage more reactive. Therefore, as observed for hydroxylated fullerenes, they should protect cells from oxidative damage. However, the thiolated fullerenes have one advantage, they can be easily attached to gold nanoparticles. For the addition on pentagon junctions smaller fullerenes like C50 are more reactive than C60. Interestingly, C70 is as reactive as C60, even for the addition on the equatorial belt. For larger fullerenes like C100, reactivity decreases for the carbon atoms belonging to hexagon junctions. We have performed a comparative study on the reactivity of metallic and semiconducting nanotubes using infinite and finite models. Infinite models were created using periodic boundary conditions while finite ones were constructed by means of hydrogen terminated nanotubes sections. Cluster models systematically underestimate the reactivity of metallic single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT)s. We have confirmed that metallic nanotubes are more reactive than semiconducting species, in disagreement with previous works. The differences can be attributed to the presence of an instability in the singlet ground state of the wavefunction corresponding to semiconducting nanotubes clusters. When lower electronic states of the pristine cluster are considered, semiconducting nanotubes become less reactive as compared with metallic SWCNTs. Particularly, if an antiferromagnetic solution is considered for the semiconducting (10,0) SWCNT cluster, it becomes less reactive than the (5,5) SWCNT, as observed for infinite models. Because semiconducting nanotubes are less reactive than metallic counterparts, their reaction energies converge faster to the values observed for graphene. For a 1.6-nm diameter semiconducting nanotube, the addition energy is comparable with graphene. Thus, semiconducting nanotubes with diameters larger than 1.6 nm are going to be as reactive as graphene and the effects of curvature will be unimportant. A theoretical docking study, conducted on a sample of previously reported phenothiazine derivatives, at the binding sites of Trypanosoma cruzi trypanothione reductase (TR) and human erythrocyte glutathione reductase (GR), examines interaction energies (affinities) towards the parasite enzyme to check for selectivity with respect to the human counterpart. Phenothiazine compounds were previously shown to be TR inhibitors. The analysis of data collected from the docking procedure was undertaken both from the numeric and graphical standpoints, including the comparison of force field, energies, molecular contacts and spatial location of the different orientations that ligands acquired at the binding sites. Molecular Dynamics simulations were also carried out for derivatives with known quantitative inhibition kinetics (Ki). The results indicate that (positively) charged phenothiazines attain larger interaction energies at TR active site, in line with previous experimental information. Suitable molecular size and shape is also needed to complement the electrostatic effect, as clearly evidenced by graphical analysis of output docked conformations. Docking energies values are reasonably well correlated with those obtained by Molecular Dynamics as well as with the experimental Ki values, confirming once again the validity of this type of scoring methods to rapidly assess ligand–receptor affinities. The interaction between alkyl radicals and graphene was studied by means of dispersion-corrected density functional theory. The results indicate that isolated alkyl radicals are not likely to be attached onto perfect graphene. It was found that the covalent binding energies are low, and because of the large entropic contribution, DGA 298 is positive for methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, and tert-butyl radicals. Although the alkylation may proceed by moderate heating, the desorption barriers are low. For the removal of the methyl and tert-butyl radicals covalently bonded to graphene, 15.3 and 2.4 kcalmol�1 are needed, respectively. When alkyl radicals are agglomerated, the binding energies are increased. For the addition in the ortho position and on opposite sides of the sheet, the graphene– CH3 binding energy is increased by 20 kcalmol�1, whereas for the para addition on the same side of the sheet, the increment is 9.4 kcalmol�1. In both cases, the agglomeration turns the DGA 298<0. For the ethyl radical, the ortho addition on opposite sides of the sheet has a negative DGA 298, whereas for isopropyl and tert-butyl radicals the reactions are endergonic. The attachment of the four alkyl radicals under consideration onto the zigzag edges is exergonic. The noncovalent adsorption energies computed for ethyl, isopropyl, and tert-butyl radicals are significantly larger than the graphene–alkyl-radical covalent binding energies. Thus, physisorption is favored over chemisorption. As for the DGA 298 for the adsorption of isolated alkyl radicals, only the tertbutyl radical is likely to be exergonic. For the phenalenyl radical we were not able to locate a local minimum for the chemisorbed structure since it moves to the physisorbed structure. We have applied dispersion corrected density functional theory to gauge the reactivity of the most common defects found in graphene. Specifically, we investigated single vacancies, 585 double vacancies, 555−777 reconstructed double vacancies, Stone− Wales defects, and hydrogenated zigzag and armchair edges. We found that the extent to which defects increase reactivity is strongly dependent on the (a) functional group to be attached and (b) number of functional groups attached. For the addition of one H, F, and phenyl groups to defective graphene, we found the following decreasing order of reactivity: single vacancy > hydrogenated zigzag edge > 585 double vacancy > 555−777 reconstructed double vacancy > Stone−Wales > hydrogenated armchair edge > perfect graphene. However, when two phenyl groups are attached, the Stone−Wales defect becomes more reactive than the 585 double vacancy and 555−777 reconstructed double vacancy. The largest increase of reactivity is observed for the functional groups whose binding energy onto perfect graphene is small. In contrast with recent experimental results, we determined that the reactivity of edges in comparison with perfect graphene is much higher than the reported value. When two groups are attached onto a 585, 555−777, or Stones−Wales defect, they prefer to be paired on the same CC bond on opposite sides of the sheet. However, for the single vacancy, this is not the observed behavior as the preferred addition sites are those carbon atoms that were previously bonded to the missing carbon. When larger aromatic models were considered, the IE were similar to those computed for benzene. Finally, taking into account the drawbacks of the DFT functionals, the computed IE for the non-ionic adsorption of Be, Mg and Ca onto graphene, are tentatively estimated as 2.1, 2.7 and 2.9 kcal/mol, respectively. We have employed density functional theory to unravel the structural and electronic properties of sulfur and nitrogen dual-doped graphene. In the preferred configuration, the sulfur and nitrogen atoms replace the carbon atoms of a CC bond, but they are not bonded. Thus, the nitrogen atom adopts a pyridinic arrangement and the sulfur atom an edge like bonding pattern, since it is solely bonded to two carbon atoms. The formation energy determined for sulfur and nitrogen dual-doped graphene was 1.36 eV smaller than the sum of the formation energies (FE) of sulfur doped graphene and nitrogen doped graphene. There is a synergic effect between sulfur and nitrogen which lowers the FE as compared with separated doping. This particular arrangement of the dopants enhances the reactivity of the sheet. For example, it facilitates the addition of molecular oxygen to sulfur to form SO2 functionalities. In general, the introduction of sulfur and nitrogen opens a band gap as indicated by HSE calculations. Además, inhibió el asentamiento de Myzus persicae y Rhopalosiphum padi (Homoptera: Aphididae). Sin embargo, no mostró toxicidad por contacto contra adultos de Nezara viridula (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Dos compuestos nunca antes reportados en esta especie vegetal y tres previamente reportados pero nunca antes testados contra los insectos nombrados fueron aislados de la fracción. Crocidosema (= Epinotia) aporema (Walsingham) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a bud borer that feeds on soybean and forage legumes. Its economic importance is restricted to South America, where it can alternate throughout the year between forage and grain legumes. The sex pheromone of C. aporema females is composed of a 15:1 mixture of (7Z,9Z)-dodeca-7,9-dien-1-ol and (7Z,9Z)- dodeca-7,9-dienyl acetate. Aiming at the development of a monitoring tool, it was synthesized both components of the pheromone and evaluated male captures in pheromone traps baited with different blends of synthetic pheromone, in an experimental soybean field in Uruguay. The conjugated dienes were obtained from 2-pentyn-1-ol and 1,7-heptanediol, by oxidation of the former, Wittig coupling and Zn-catalyzed reduction of the triple bond. The 1:1 mixture was the most efficient in capturing males. The pheromone traps were attractive for up to 40 days, even with small septum loads (0.1 mg) and low population levels. Beekeeping has always been vulnerable to various sanitary drawbacks. The mite Varroa destructor (Mesostigmata: Varroidae), an obligated ectoparasite of honeybees, has been in recent times one of the major problems leading not only to economical losses but also to ecological problems related to the role of honeybees as the most important pollinators on Earth. Varroatosis has been treated by methods that include special practices of beekeeping, physical removal, and the use of synthetic acaricides. None of these methods have, however, rendered complete protection, and there is clear evidence for the evolution of resistance to conventional acaricides. Consequently, the need for alternative control means has prompted the onset of several prospecting programs on botanicals with anti-varroa potential. Among these, essential oils appear as good candidates for safer control. In this review, we provide a concise compilation of the information generated in the last years on essential oils with anti-varroa activity. Future developments in this area demand standardization of bioassay protocols (either in the laboratory for primary screening or in hives), a detailed chemical characterization of the essential oils tested, and comprehensive studies on application methods. Cucurbitacins are secondary metabolites that mediate insect plant interactions not only as allomones against generalists but also as kairomones for specialist herbivores. This study was undertaken to identify the potential of cucurbitacin derivatives as insect antifeedant agents. The antifeedant capacity against a Cucurbitaceae specialist [Epilachna paenulata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)] and a polyphagous insect [Pseudaletia adultera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)] was evaluated in preference tests in which the insects were given a choice between food plants either treated with the cucurbitacin derivatives or treated with the solvent. The activity was found not to be related to the basic cucurbitacin skeleton, as only 15 of the 28 tested cucurbitacin derivatives were active. Only one of the tested compounds was phagostimulant to the specialist insect (the hemissuccinate of 16-oxo-dihydrocucurbitacin B derivative), while all other active derivatives were deterrent against one of the insects (13 compounds) or both of them (3 compounds). Changes in ring A of the cucurbitacins, as well as in the side chain, modified the activity. As a general trend, when chemical modifications of the basic structure produced a change in activity, the response was opposite in both insects used as biodetectors, indicating that a selective variation in the activity may be achieved by chemical modifications of the cucurbitacin skeleton. Allophylus edulis, commonly called ‘Chal chal’, is a member of the Sapindaceae occurring in the Uruguayan and Brazilian native flora. During the phytochemical analysis of two Chal chal specimens from two well-differentiated geographical zones (Assis, São Paulo, Brazil, and Santa Lucía, Canelones, Uruguay), considerable amounts of l-quebrachitol were isolated from both samples. The isolation was carried out from the ethanolic twig extracts obtained by maceration of both vegetal samples. White easily distinguishable crystals were mechanically separated, washed, and characterized by 1D and 2D NMR experiments and by MS data. Such techniques confirmed that the crystals isolated from sources collected in both countries resulted in the same compound, l-quebrachitol, a natural product not previously reported for this species and one that has been investigated as a sugar substitute for diabetics. Worthy of note, the content of l-quebrachitol in A. edulis may be the chemical basis to explain its ethnobotanical uses, since infusions of this plant are used to treat diabetes in the practice of local traditional medicine. The head lice, Pediculus humanus capitis (Phthiraptera:Pediculidae), is an obligate ectoparasite of humans that causes pediculosis capitis, a nuisance for millions of people worldwide, with high prevalence in children. Pediculosis capitis has been treated by methods that include the physical remotion of lice, various domestic treatments and conventional insecticides. None of these methods render complete protection, and there is clear evidence for the evolution of resistance and cross-resistance to conventional insecticides. Non-toxic alternative options are hence needed for head lice treatment and/or prevention, and natural products from plants, especially essential oils (EOs), are good candidates for safer control agents that may provide good anti-lice activity and low levels of evolved resistance. A few EOs have been tested as repellents with promissory results, although often in vitro tests and clinical trials produce contradictory results. A handful of fixed extracts and several EOs and their individual components have also been tested as contact pediculicides or fumigants. The studies have focused mainly on plant families characterized for the production of EOs. While many EOs and individual compounds showed pediculicide activity, comparing results is difficult due to the diverse bioassay methodologies. Studies of anti-lice activity of individual EO components provide the basis for preliminary conclusions of structure–activity relationships, although no clear patterns can yet be drawn. We here attempt to provide a concise compilation of the available information on anti-lice activity of plant extracts and plant-derived compounds, which we hope may be of help for future developments in this area.
