La función de un vector energético es almacenar la energía para luego entregarla. El caso del hidrógeno presenta varias formas para de ser utilizado en generación de energía, ya sea en combustión directa en motores o turbinas térmicas, en mezclas con otros combustibles o se puede obtener energía eléctrica directamente por medio su combustión con oxígeno o aire en las celdas de combustible. El hidrógeno es un vector energético limpio y desde el punto de vista energético, el hidrógeno es, de todos los combustibles, el que tiene la máxima relación energía/peso. Sin embargo, como su relación energía/volumen es la mínima, el almacenamiento del hidrógeno con altas densidades de energía volumétrica es un reto a resolver. Teniendo en cuenta el uso en aplicaciones móviles el método de almacenamiento elegido debe presentar una cinética rápida, ser seguro y de bajo costo. Una manera eficiente de almacenarlo que cumple con muchos de estos requisitos es hacerlo en fase sólida en aleaciones formadoras de hidruros. Estas aleaciones tienen además la ventaja de poder almacenar hidrógeno tanto por la vía gaseosa como electroquímica. La vía electroquímica brinda la posibilidad de utilizar estos sistemas como electrodos de baterías alcalinas, substituyendo así a las baterías de níquel-cadmio. Palladium supported on copper–magnesium–aluminium hydrotalcites (HTs) were prepared by using coprecipitation and impregnation techniques. The different palladium/hydrotalcites solid catalysts were tested in the liquid phase oxidation of pure limonene using molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant agent. Both palladium and copper were found to influence the conversion versus reaction time profile of limonene oxidation. A chain reaction mechanism is proposed to explain the experimental results. Palladium participates in the formation of allylic radicals through activation of carbon–hydrogen bonds of limonene and in the formation of adducts by cleavage of the carbon–carbon double bonds. Copper catalyzes mainly the decomposition of hydroperoxides leading to radical intermediates. Different oxygen containing derivates from limonene were formed (1,2- and 8,9-epoxylimonene, cis and trans carveol and carvone) according to the chain reaction mechanism. Higher reaction rates and final conversion of limonene over 70% were obtained with a suitable content of copper in the hydrotalcite. La tarea de coor dinación realizada entre los doce ntes ha dado lugar a un trabajo interdisciplinario que enriqueció a profesores y alumnos, a la vez que favoreció la comprensión. No se trató de una articulación superficial en el sentido de delimitar qué contenidos desarrolla cada cual, sino que fue tan profunda que permitió la preparación de las clases en conjunto, la armonización en las posibles formas de enseñar, de utilizar los términos específicos, de representar los símbolos y fórmulas. El Magnetismo Molecular ha sido un área de sostenido interés en los últimos 30 años. La búsqueda de la comprensión detallada de los fenómenos que influyen en el comportamiento magnético de especies de origen molecular ha sido su principal guía, con el objetivo de poder controlar factores como las interacciones y la anisotropía magnéticas, para lograr así especies que puedan presentar un mejor desempeño magnético con miras a potenciales aplicaciones tecnológicas. Este trabajo de tesis se enmarca en el Magnetismo Molecular y ha tenido como objetivo general la síntesis y caracterización estructural de nuevos compuestos de coordinación y el estudio de sus propiedades magnéticas. Para llevar adelante el trabajo se han adoptado dos diferentes estrategias de síntesis. La primera metodología comprende el uso de ligandos oxigenados con grupos alcoxo y carboxilato, los cuales presentan una gran flexibilidad con diferentes modos de coordinación en forma de puente. Cuando se mezclan directamente estos ligandos con iones metálicos 3d paramagnéticos, en reacciones que generalmente pueden proceder en un solo paso, es posible obtener diferentes especies de variadas topologías de espín de los centros metálicos. Si bien resulta difícil predecir el resultado final, esta metodología ha llevado a un avance importante en el magnetismo molecular ya que ha posibilitado el estudio de una gran diversidad de moléculas. Los resultados obtenidos siguiendo esta estrategia mediante el uso de iones metálicos 3d y ligandos tipo polipiridilcetona se muestran en la Sección II. En segundo lugar se ha llevado adelante una estrategia en la cual en una primera etapa se prepara un complejo mononuclear que contiene un ligando que puede funcionar como puente. Este precursor es usado luego, en una segunda etapa, como ligando frente a otro metal. Por otra parte, la mayoría de los estudios magnéticos se han realizado sobre compuestos Resumen conteniendo metales de la primera serie de transición, iones lantánidos o mezclas de ellos, mientras que relativamente muy poco trabajo se ha realizado sobre compuestos conteniendo iones 4d o 5d. Sin embargo, algunos iones de elementos de la segunda y tercera serie de transición presentan características químicas y magnéticas adecuadas para ser usados en compuestos precursores para coordinar a otros metales con miras a la síntesis de nuevos materiales magnéticos. En la Sección III se presentan resultados obtenidos a partir del uso de compuestos de Re(IV) como precursores de compuestos bimetálicos 5d/4f, 5d/3d y trimetálicos 5d/4f/3d. El contenido de esta tesis se organiza en tres secciones y cuatro apéndices. En la Sección I se encuentra la introducción y los objetivos, mientras que en Sección II y III ya mencionadas se presentan los resultados obtenidos. En la introducción realizada en la Sección I se presentan los aspectos generales de los materiales magnéticos moleculares que hacen de su estudio un área de interés, se detalla brevemente la evolución histórica del magnetismo molecular y se exponen algunos de los ejemplos más relevantes de estudios magnético-estructurales presentados en los últimos 30 años. Finalmente en esta sección se presentan los objetivos particulares de este trabajo. En la Sección II se presentan los resultados obtenidos trabajando con los iones metálicos Ni(II), Co(II) y Mn(II) con ligandos tipo polipiridilcetona, fundamentalmente con di-2-piridil cetona, (py)2CO, pero también con el ligando di-2,6(2-piridilcarbonil)piridina, pyCOpyCOpy. Los ligandos polipiridilcetona son atacados por el solvente en presencia del ion metálico generando nuevos ligandos tipo gem-diol o hemiacetal, ligandos que presentan una gran flexibilidad para la coordinación de hasta cinco centros metálicos por el mismo ligando. En la síntesis de los compuestos se ha usado además ligandos auxiliares como benzoato {O2CPh}- o picolinato (pic-). De esta forma se han obtenido los compuestos [M4{(py)2C(O)(OH)}4{O2CPh}4] ·2H2O (M = Ni(1) y Co(2)) de tipo cubano. Ambos compuestos neutros presentan interacciones ferromagnéticas. Por otra parte cuando se usa como ligando auxiliar picolinato se obtienen los compuestos [Ni4(pic)2{(py)2C(OH) O}2{(py)2C(OCH3)O}2](NO3)2 (3), [Ni4(pic)2{(py)2C(OH)O}4](NO3)2 (4) y Resumen [M4(pic)2{(py)2C(OH)O}2{(py)2C(OCH3)O}2](BPh4)2·2H2O (M = Ni(5), Co(6), y Mn(7)) los que presentan una estructura de tipo dicubano incompleto con un arreglo de los portadores de espín en forma de rombo. Los compuestos de Ni(II) presenta interacciones antiferromagnéticas dominantes mientras que el compuesto de Co(II) presenta interacciones ferromagnéticas y dependencia de la señal AC con la frecuencia. También ha sido posible para este sistema la preparación de soluciones solidas [MA xMB 4-x(pic)2{(py)2C(OH) O}2{(py)2C(OCH3)O}2](BPh4)2·2H2O (MA = Ni, MB = Co, Mn) (8-11). Estos compuestos bimetálicos son isoestructurales con los monometálicos anteriores y los valores de x dependen de la mezcla de partida de los iones Ni(II), Co(II) y Mn(II). Finalmente en esta sección también se informa la síntesis, resolución estructural y caracterización magnética del compuesto trinuclear angular [Ni3{pyC(OEt)(O)pyCOpy}2(O2CPh)2(EtOH)2](ClO4)2∙2EtOH (12) preparado a partir del ligando di-2,6(2-piridilcarbonil)piridina (pyCOpyCOpy), el cual presenta interacciones ferromagnéticas. En la Sección III se presentan los resultados obtenidos usando precursores de Re(IV). Este ion de la tercera serie de transición, que presenta generalmente entornos de coordinación octaédricos, con una relativa estabilidad frente a la sustitución de ligandos, así como inercia frente a procesos redox. Su estado fundamental presenta un estado con S = 3/2, y alta anisotropía magnética generada por efecto de la distorsión de la geometría octaédrica y del acoplamiento espín-órbita de segundo orden. El compuesto mononuclear NBu4[ReBr5(H2pydc)]∙2-PrOH (13) (H2pydc = ácido 3,5-pyridinedicarboxílico) ha sido obtenido por reacción de sustitución del ligando sobre el compuesto [ReBr6]2-. Su estructura y caracterización magnética son reportadas. El ligando H2pydc se encuentra coordinado al renio a través del nitrógeno piridínico, dejando disponibles los carboxiltaos para coordinar hacia otros metales. A partir de este precursor 13 se sintetizaron compuestos bimetálicos Re(IV)/Ln(III) siendo Ln = Dy, Pr y Sm. Los compuestos (NBu4)9{M3(H2O)2[ReBr5(pydc)]3[ReBr5(Hpydc)]4[ReBr5(H2pydc)]}∙7H2O, con M = Dy(14) y Sm(15) presentan estructuras en cadenas. El derivado de Dy(III) presenta dependencia de la frecuencia en la señal AC a baja temperatura, lo que sugiere un comportamiento de lenta relajación de la magnetización. El compuesto obtenido a partir del uso de praseodimio (NBu4)2{Pr(H2O)2(CH3OH)2[ReBr5(3,5pydc)][ReBr5(3,5pydcH)]} (16) también presenta una estructura monodimensional. We have prepared polycrystalline ceramic samples using a modified polymeric precursors method, which produces highly homogeneous specimens. The use of argon atmosphere enlarges the crystalline c-axis as detected by Rietveld refinements. As a consequence, an improvement in the magnetic transition temperature TC of the samples was observed. Our results also indicate that different heat-treatment conditions change the magnetic interactions between the ferromagnetic (F) and antiferromagnetic (AF) structures of these systems. Our conclusions rely on the use of AC magnetic susceptibility measurements as the experimental tool for measuring these variations. Taking into account the low stability of the Sm(III)–amino acids compounds and searching for thermodynamically stable compounds which contain biologically relevant ligands in the coordination sphere, mixed-ligand compounds have been studied by potentiometric measurements. The strategy was to use a stable core with Sm(III) and polycarboxylates (edta, nta, ida, etc.) and to substitute the labile positions (occupied by water molecules) by amino acids. Experiments were performed in aqueous solution at 37.0 °C and 0.15 M NaClO4, resembling physiological medium. In all cases, mixed-ligand species were detected in solution. If cores like nta or ida were used, it was possible to get amino acid containing complexes stable enough to be used at physiological pH, avoiding precipitation of Sm(OH)3. Single-crystal X-ray structure of K2.5(H3O)0.5[Sm(nta)2(H2O)]·5H2O is also reported. A nine coordinate Sm atom is found, surrounded by two N atoms and six O atoms from two nta ligands and one O from a water molecule. Geometry around Sm can be described as a tricapped trigonal prism. Proliferation of macrophages is a hallmark of inflammation in many type 2 settings including helminth infections. The cellular expansion is driven by the type 2 cytokine interleukin-4 (IL-4), as well as by M-CSF, which also controls homeostatic levels of tissue resident macrophages. Cystic echinococcosis, caused by the tissue-dwelling larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus, is characterised by normally subdued local inflammation. Infiltrating host cells make contact only with the acellular protective coat of the parasite, called laminated layer, particles of which can be ingested by phagocytic cells. Here we report that a particulate preparation from this layer (pLL) strongly inhibits the proliferation of macrophages in response to IL-4 or M-CSF. In addition, pLL also inhibits IL-4-driven up-regulation of Relm-α, without similarly affecting Chitinase-like 3 (Chil3/Ym1). IL-4-driven cell proliferation and up-regulation of Relm-α are both known to depend on the phosphatidylinositol (PI3K)/Akt pathway, which is dispensable for induction of Chil3/Ym1. Exposure to pLL in vitro inhibited Akt activation in response to proliferative stimuli, providing a potential mechanism for its activities. Our results suggest that the E. granulosus laminated layer exerts some of its anti-inflammatory properties through inhibition of PI3K/Akt activation and consequent limitation of macrophage proliferation. Reducing the concentration of added sugar in processed foods is one of the most realistic strategies to reduce the intake of this nutrient in the short-term. In order to be effective, gradual sugar reduction strategies need to determine the maximum sugar reduction that can be unnoticed by consumers. In this context, the present work aimed at providing recommendations for gradual sugar reduction in chocolate-flavoured milk by determining difference thresholds for added sugar and evaluating consumers' sensory and hedonic perception of reduced-sugar products. Five studies were conducted with 50 consumers to determine five sequential difference thresholds. In each study consumers completed six paired-comparison tests. Each pair was composed of a reference chocolate-flavoured milk and a sample that was reduced in added sugar from the reference. Difference thresholds, corresponding to the smallest reduction in sugar concentration that is noticed by consumers, were determined using survival analysis. Then, a study was carried to with 100 consumers to evaluate their sensory and hedonic perception of chocolate-flavoured milk samples with different added sugar concentrations. Results suggested that sequential sugar reductions can be set at 6.7% without affecting consumers' sensory and hedonic perception. Sugar reduction in chocolate-flavoured milk without affecting consumers' perception seems feasible and easy to implement. The approach of the present work could be extended to design recommendations for gradual reduction of the added sugar concentration of other industrialized products, contributing to the development of more healthful products that meet current nutritional recommendations. Title A name given to the resource Innovación didáctica en la enseñanza de la Química en el nivel de educación media en Uruguay Subject The topic of the resource INNOVACION DIDÁCTICA ENSEÑANZA DE LA QUÍMICA MEJORA DE LA ENSEÑANZA Abstract A summary of the resource. Este trabajo busca localizar e investigar focos de innovación didáctica en la enseñanza de la Química en Uruguay. Se pretende así contribuir a visibilizar acciones que producen quienes están en las aulas, en el ejercicio directo de la profesión y que derivan de su compromiso con la misma. Se analiza y comparte “lo bueno” que se hace en las instituciones educativas de forma que las experiencias investigadas puedan ser resignificadas por otros colegas, contribuyendo así a la mejora de la enseñanza de la asignatura. La investigación tiene un enfoque cualitativo de tipo etnográfico, basado en entrevistas reflexivas que se caracterizan como “encuentros dialógicos”. En la primera etapa se mantuvieron encuentros con cinco informantes calificados, conocedores de los diversos aspectos de la realidad de la enseñanza secundaria en el país. Se indagaron sus concepciones acerca de la innovación didáctica y se les solicitó que indicaran nombres de profesores y profesoras que, a su juicio, pudieran ser considerados innovadores. De los veintinueve docentes mencionados por los informantes calificados, se seleccionaron y entrevistaron seis, que conforman un grupo diverso en cuanto a género, edad, contexto de trabajo, formación y experiencia docente. A partir de los datos se recogidos se caracterizan innovaciones didácticas y situaciones innovadoras según Tejada (2008). Se analizan las dimensiones de la innovación y las relaciones entre las acciones que llevan adelante los profesores considerados innovadores y las perspectivas del curriculum según Grundy (1991). Se concluye que solo unas pocas de las situaciones analizadas en esta investigación tienen un sentido integrado e institucionalizado que implica formas de interacción, colaboración y participación activa de los estudiantes en la construcción del conocimiento así como el establecimiento de nuevas relaciones entre la ciudadanía y el mundo científico y pueden, por tanto, ser consideradas innovaciones didácticas de acuerdo a Tejada (2008). Innovación didáctica en la enseñanza de la Química en el nivel de educación media en el Uruguay Gabriela Meroni 6 Existe otro variado grupo de situaciones didácticas que constituyen experiencias interesantes y novedosas realizadas por docentes preocupados y ocupados en mejorar sus prácticas pero que, debido a su carácter esporádico y al bajo impacto en las instituciones en que se realizan, no tienen cabida en el concepto de innovaciones didácticas y constituyen experiencias innovadoras. These compounds have antichagasic therapeutic activity but very low water solubility, which limits their application. Polypropylene imine dendrimers with amine terminal groups (DAB-16AT and DAB-32AT) and polyamide amine (PAMAM) dendrimers with carboxylate terminal groups (PAMAM-32CT), with amine terminal groups, (PAMAM-8AT and PAMAM-32AT) and with hydroxyl terminal groups (PAMAM-32OHT) were chosen for this study. Approximately one molecule of phenanthrene or anthracene was encapsulated in PAMAM-32CT, PAMAM-32AT, PAMAM-32OHT and DAB-32AT dendrimers. However, slight encapsulation was observed working with PAMAM-8AT and DAB-16AT. The studies with tetrabenzonaphtalene show that the guest molecule might only be partially caged within the dendrimer host. However, for relatively insoluble solutes the efficiency to encapsulate can be dictated by the saturation in the aqueous phase besides the dendrimer capacity to dissolve it. These dendrimers are also able to encapsulate and consequently solubilize 1 and 2 oxadiazol. However, PAMAM dendrimers are better for encapsulation and retention due to guest-host specific interactions. These interactions can be diminished by lowering the pH to allow a controlled deliverance of the drug. Bi2Se3 is a prominent narrow gap semiconductor with a rhombohedral crystal structure and potential applications in thermoelectric and spintronic technologies. Its electrical conduction is ruled by native point defects inducing an n-type degenerate behavior. Here, we present a first principles study of the point defects in Bi2Se3, focusing on the relevance of the interstitial sites. A density functional methodology was employed with van der Waals correction and spin–orbit coupling in order to achieve a better description of the defects. The results indicate that interstitial Bi atoms in octahedral sites between two consecutive quintuple layers have a lower formation energy than selenium vacancies and that these interstitials could act as a possible source of free electron carriers. In addition, we show that the utilization of an experimental or strained lattice constant in the calculations may lead to an under- or overestimation of the defect formation energies. The eukaryotic translation Elongation Factor 2 (eEF2) is an essential enzyme in protein synthesis. eEF2 contains a unique modification of a histidine (His699 in yeast; HIS) into diphthamide (DTA), obtained via 3-amino-3-carboxypropyl (ACP) and diphthine (DTI) intermediates in the biosynthetic pathway. This essential and unique modification is also vulnerable, in that it can be efficiently targeted by NAD+-dependent ADP-ribosylase toxins, such as diphtheria toxin (DT). However, none of the intermediates in the biosynthesis path is equally vulnerable against the toxins. This study aims to address the different susceptibility of DTA and its precursors against bacterial toxins. We have herein undertaken a detailed in silico study of the structural features and dynamic motion of different His699 intermediates along the diphthamide synthesis pathway (HIS, ACP, DTI, DTA). The study points out that DTA forms a strong hydrogen bond with an asparagine which might explain the ADP-ribosylation mechanism caused by the diphtheria toxin (DT). Finally, in silico mutagenesis studies were performed on the DTA modified protein, in order to hamper the formation of such a hydrogen bond. The results indicate that the mutant structure might in fact be less susceptible to attack by DT and thereby behave similarly to DTI in this respect. The current work is the first report on the isolation and characterization of an extracellular b-glucosidase from I. orientalis, isolated from Uruguayan Tempranillo grapes. The extracellular activity reached a maximum after 96h of growth in the presence of 20 g/L of cellobiose. b-glucosidase was purified to homogeneity by anion-exchangechromatography and its biochemical properties were studied. Optimum catalytic activity conditions were 50°C and pH 5.0. The enzyme showed wide substrate specificity and proved to be highly tolerant to the presence of wine-associated inhibitory compounds such as glucose (100 g/L) and ethanol (12%). Immobilization onto silica nano-particles greatly improved enzyme stability at low pH (240-fold) with respect to the soluble biocatalyst. In addition, it is very active on wine glycosides and shows several suitable features suggesting that it is appropriate for the release of wine aroma. The increase in concentration of free norisoprenoids, terpenes and phenols was statistically significant. The release of phenols was particularly noteworthy, especially 4-vinilguayacol which is known to provide curry and clove notes. These results suggest the potential of this new β-glucosidase as an aroma-enhancing enzyme in winemaking. Activated carbon fibers (ACF) are known as excellent adsorbent materials due to their fast adsorption rate and easy handling characteristic. The ACF can be manufactured from the polyacrylonitrile fiber, based on an usual carbon fibers (CF) production process accomplished by an additional activation process. The aim of the present work is to describe the production, chemical/morphological characterization and application potentiality of activated carbon fiber felt (ACFF) produced from textile PAN fiber, using a set of homemade equipment. The 5.0 dtex PAN fiber tow with 200 thousand filaments was oxidized and used as raw material for felt production. The oxidized PAN fiber felt (OPFF) was displaced in a special sample holder, carbonized (900 °C) and then activated in CO2 atmosphere at 1000 °C in an electric tubular furnace. All steps of the process were performed as fast as possible, and characterization was done by 77 K N2 isotherms, adsorption isotherms in liquid phase, scanning electronic microscope, X-ray diffraction and surface chemistry by Bhoem methodology. The results confirmed the production of essentially microporous (pore < 3.2 nm, centered on 1.2 nm) and 1,300 m2 g-1 surface area.
