<div class="paragraph">Propolis and grape pomace have significant amounts of phenols which can take part in anti-inflammatory mechanisms. As the cyclooxygenases 1 and 2 (COX-1 and COX-2) are involved in said mechanisms, the possibility for a selective inhibition of COX-2 was analyzed <em>in vitro</em> and <em>in silico</em>.</div>
<div class="paragraph">Propolis and grape pomace from Uruguayan species were collected, extracted in hydroalcoholic mixture and analyzed. Based on phenols previously identified, and taking as reference the crystallographic structures of COX-1 and COX-2 in complex with the commercial drug Celecoxib, a molecular docking procedure was devised to adjust 123 phenolic molecular models at the enzyme binding sites.</div>
<div class="paragraph">The most important results of this work are that the extracts have an overall inhibition activity very similar in COX-1 and COX-2, i.e. they do not possess selective inhibition activity for COX-2. Nevertheless, 10 compounds of the phenolic database turned out to be more selective and 94 phenols resulted with similar selectivity than Celecoxib, an outcome that accounts for the overall experimental inhibition measures.</div>
<div class="paragraph">Binding site environment observations showed increased polarity in COX-2 as compared with COX-1, suggesting that polarity is the key for selectivity. Accordingly, the screening of molecular contacts pointed to the residues: Arg106, Gln178, Leu338, Ser339, Tyr341, Tyr371, Arg499, Ala502, Val509 and Ser516, which would explain, at the atomic level, the anti-inflammatory effect of the phenolic compounds. Among them, Gln178 and Arg499 appear to be essential for the selective inhibition of COX-2.</div>

Consumption of natural orange juice is considered a healthy habit. Despite the wide offer of options such as fruit, vegetable or healthy smoothies to start the day, orange juice continues to be one of the favourite drinks to “start with energy”. Currently, a concern among general population, regarding nutritional importance and knowledge about how the foods consumed influence health is growing. Uruguay is the second largest exporter in Latin America and one of the twenty largest citrus exporters in the world, thus, analytical methods to monitor their nutritional value and quality are always being revised and modernized. This study focused on examining the correlation between different parameters assessed using standard methods and determined through near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) for Citrus sinensis Valencia orange juice. Besides, several parameters to characterize the nutritional value of this juice were determined and reported. The findings showed a novel correlation between NIR spectroscopy data and results obtained for calcium (Slope > 0.94 and Residual Predicted Deviation > 3) compared with standard methods which are discussed. Notably, the outcomes highlight NIR spectroscopy as a valuable approach for streamlining analyses, in this case calcium determination, significantly reducing the required resources-such as time and costs of parameters pivotal for assessing juice quality. The results indicate that the orange juice studied showed good nutritional quality parameters, besides calcium content can also be evaluated by NIR, being this technique in more agreement with the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry.

Within the flavonoid class of natural products the prenylated sub-class is quite rich in structural variety and pharmacological activity. In the last twenty years a huge number of new structures has been reported, mostly from Leguminosae and Moraceae, with few coming from other genera. The presence, in different forms, of the isoprenoid chain can lead to impressive changes in biological activity, mostly attributed to an increased affinity for biological membranes and to an improved interaction with proteins. Molecules, such as xanthohumol and sophoraflavanone G, while being very structurally simple, show numerous pharmacological applications and are ideal candidates for SAR aimed to the discovery of new drugs.

A summary of the resource.
<p><em>Streptococcus thermophilus</em> relies heavily on two type II-A CRISPR-Cas systems, CRISPR1 and CRISPR3, to resist siphophage infections. One hallmark of these systems is the integration of a new spacer at the 50 end of the CRISPR arrays following phage infection. However, we have previously shown that ectopic acquisition of spacers can occur within the CRISPR1 array. Here, we present evidence of the acquisition of new spacers within the array of CRISPR3 of <em>S. thermophilus</em>. The<br />analysis of randomly selected bacteriophage-insensitive mutants of the strain Uy01 obtained after phage infection, as well as the comparison with other S. thermophilus strains with similar CRISPR3 content, showed that a specific spacer within the array could be responsible for misguiding the adaptation complex. These results also indicate that while the vast majority of new spacers are added at the 50 end of the CRISPR array, ectopic spacer acquisition is a common feature of both<br />CRISPR1 and CRISPR3 systems in <em>S. thermophilus</em>, and it can still provide phage resistance. Ectopic spacer acquisition also appears to have occurred naturally in some strains of<em> Streptococcus pyogenes</em>, suggesting that it is a general phenomenon, at least in type II-A systems.</p>

El Trypanosoma cruzi es un protozoo hemoflagelado, agente causal de la enfermedad de Chagas 0 Tripanosomiasis Americana, dolencia endemica y cr6nica, que afecta a aproximadamente 18 millones de individuos en America Latina Es un parasito intracelular que convive con su hospedero, por mas de 70 ailos, en un equilibrio del tipo "vivir y dejar vivir". En este contexte son diversos los mecanismos desarrollados por el hospedero para su eliminaci6n y por el parasito para evadirlos, 10 que 10 hace, sin duda, un modelo fascinante para ser estudiado. <br />En los ultimos ailos hemos clonado, secuenciado y expresado el gen de calreticulina de T cruzi (TcCRJ), proteina de 45kDa, electroforeticamente dim6rfica e inmunogenica [1-5]. Esta molecula fue descrita, por primera vez, en 1991 en ellaboratorio donde se desarro1l6 esta Tesis, como Tc45, un antigeno de T cruzi inmunogeneticamente restringido en ratones [6]. Posee 41% de homologia con calreticulina de Leishmania donovani y mas de un 50% con calreticulina hurnana (HuCRn [1]. TcCRT esta presente en la superficie de tripomastigotes, une Clq y MBL, inhibiendo la ruta clasica del sistema del complemento [7]. Su gen se localiza en diversos cromosomas [1]. <br />Calreticulina (CRn de mamiferos es una proteina multifuncional altamente conservada que une calcio, esta presente en todas las ceIulas de los organismos superiores, excepto eritrocitos. Regula mas de 40 funciones daves, entre ellas se incluyen: chaperona del tipo lectina, sefializaci6n y almacenamiento del calcio, modulaci6n de la expresi6n genica, adhesi6n celular, fagocitosis de celulas apopt6ticas por uni6n a Clq, inhibici6n de la angiogenesis y del crecimiento tumoral, inhibici6n de la actividad litica de las perforinas de ceIulas T y NK, e inhibici6n de la activaci6n del complemento dependiente de Clq. Igualmente, calreticulina esta presente en diversos compartimentos subcelulares. <br />EI docurnento de esta Tesis se divide en 9 capitulos, de los cuales el pnmero es una revisi6n bibliograficas y en los capitulos 6, 7 y 8, se incluyen revisiones que hemos publicado, recientemente, sobre el rol de calreticulina de parasitos en su interacci6n con el hospedero vertebrado, en lnmunologia, 2002 [8] Y Molecular lnmunology, 2004 [9], y Trends in Parasitology, 2005[10], respectivamente. En el capitulo 9 se incuye una discusi6n general del docurnento de esta Tesis y en el resto de los capitulos se presentan resultados. <br />Paralelamente al desarrollo de esta Tesis, y de particular interes ha resultado la habilidad de TcCRT para combinarse especificamente con componentes iniciales del Sistema del Complemento (Clq y MBL), 10 que resulta en una importante inhibici6n de la ruta clasica del complemento humano [9]. Es posible, entonces, que T cruzi utilice a TcCRT para modular, en su beneficio, este importante brazo efector de la respuesta inmune. En el capitulo 2 analizamos, en el modelo murino, la capacidad inmunogenica de TcCRT, como proteina recombinante (TcCRTr) y de plasmidios portadores de fragmentos del gen que codifica TcCRT. Tambien, se muestran experimentos preliminares de desafio con tripomastigotes sanguineos de T cruzi, cepa Tulahuen y se analiza la inmunidad pasiva, inducida por anticuerpos policlonales lapinos anti el dominio funcional S, de uni6n a Clq, de TcCRT. Demostramos, en ensayo ELISA, que TcCRTr es inmunogenica en ratones BALB/c y que los anticuerpos generados reconocen la proteina nativa mediante inmunofluorescencia indirecta por microscopia convencional. La inoculaci6n de DNA desnudo con pSec.K2, en ratones BALB/c, genera inmunidad humoral especifica anti TcCRT, analizado en ensayos ELISA. Mediante anaJisis de citometria de flujo, estos anticuerpos reconocen la proteina nativa en el interior y en la superficie de los parasitos, confirmando la expresi6n intracelular y ex.1racelular de esta proteina. Previamente habiamos demostrado que IgG de ratones A.SW (H2') inmunizados con tripomastigotes 0 epimastigotes de T cruzi y suero de pacientes humanos infectados reconocian Tc45 [I, 3, 5]. Ademas, se generaron anticuerpos monoclonales anti TcCRTy tres plasmidios, portadores del gen de TcCRT; pcDNA.KI, pcDNA.K2 y pSec.K2. <br />Dado que TcCRT posee un segmento con 46% de identidad y 60% de positividad con el fragmento funcional descrito con propiedad antiangiogenica de HuCRT (aa 120-180) y que, sorprendentemente, en ratones y ratas infectados con T cruzi se observa una disminuci6n, e incluso desaparici6n, del crecimiento de diversos tumores trasplantables y espontfuleos, en el capitulo 3 analizamos el efecto antiangiogenico de TcCRT, en un ensayo, in vivo, en membrana alantocori6nica de embriones de polio (CAM). Utilizamos proteina nativa y recombinante, la construcci6n plasmidial pSec.K2, que porta el gen de TcCRT, sin sus secuencias lider y de retenci6n en el reticulo endoplasmico (KDEL) y Betametasona, como control positivo. La capacidad productiva del constructo genico fue verificada por citometria de flujo, mostrando que sueros de ratones inmunizados con el plasmidio recombinante reconocen TcCRT en tripomastigotes de T cruzi, fijados y vivos. TcCRT y pSec.K2 indujeron un efecto antiangiogenico altamente significativo en ensayos CAM in vivo. Los resultados mostrados aqui indicarian que TcCRT, como su contraparte humana, tiene propiedades antiangiogenicas. Probablemente, el efecto antiangiogenico de esta sustancia ocurre preferentemente sobre el crecimiento de tej idos neoplasicos, pero no en tumores establecidos; debido a su efecto sobre la formaci6n de nuevos vasos. Estas propiedades, podrian explicar, al menos en parte, la actividad antineoplasica observada en infecciones experimentales con T cruzi. En este Capitulo, se adjunta un trabajo publicado en Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 2005[ II], en el cual mostramos estos resultados. Como informaci6n anexa a este documento se agrega la Figura 51, donde se muestra la vasculatura de membranas tratadas 0 no con TcCRTr. <br />En el capitulo 4 se presentan resultados donde se observa que TcCRT es una molecula electroforeticamente dim6rfica, codificada por multiples genes localizados en cromosomas cuyo numero varia en funci6n de la cepa 0 clon parasitario y, aparentemente, en el nUmero de copias de genes que codificaria TcCRT presentes en cada cromosoma. En este sentido, se observan desde dos bandas, entre 1.125 y 2.000 kb, en el cion CL Brener y cepas colombianas 2 y 3, hasta en cuatro diferentes cromosomas en las cepas Tulahuen, 2 e Y Y en el clon DM 28c. Ademas, se analiza, en geles de electroforesis de campo pulsado (pFGE), la presencia del gen de TcCRT en clones de T rangeli. Se observa una senal muy debil, por 10 que podria pensarse que el nillnero de copias del gen por cromosoma es muy bajo y/o la secuencia del gen es 10 suficientemente diferente como para dificultar la hibri daci on. Por otra parte, en geles de poliacrilamida en presencia de SDS (SDSSPAGE), en condiciones reductoras, TcCRT muestra un dimorfismo electroforetico de 43 y 46 kDa, 10 que permitiria clasificar a las cepas en dos grupos definidos. Aful desconocemos el significado funcional y la naturaleza bioquimica de la beterogeneidad cromosomica y del dimorfismo electroforetico de TcCRT. Estos hecbos sugieren que en T cruzi existe una familia de CRTs 0 moleculas bomologas, abriendo la posibilidad de una variedad de funciones, quizas relevantes en la relacion hospedero/parasito. En este Capitulo, se adjunta un trabajo publicado en Am J Trap Med Hyg, 2000, en el cual mostramos, entre otros datos, los primeros resultados en PFGE, describimos el dimorfismo electroforetico de TcCRT y el uso del anticuerpo monoclonal E2G7, generado en el contexto de esta Tesis, para el clonamiento y expresion de TcCRT. <br />Ya fuera del contexto de esta Tesis, sera de interes el verificar si Calreticulina del insecto triatomino, al igual que la de otros hematMogos[12], es secretada via salival y si mantiene la propiedad de ururse a Cl (q, r, s) ylo MBL-MAPS, de diversos hospederos potenciales. De ser aS1, el artropodo se protegeria de posibles mecanismos citotoxicos, mediado por el complemento, sobre la mucosa digestiva. Por ello, incluimos en el capitulo 5 un trabajo, recientemente, publicado en Parasitology Research, 2004 [13], con relacion a los habitos alimenticios de Mepraia spinolai. Este es un vector artropodo silvestre de T. cruzi, agente importante, al menos, en la mantencion del cicIo parasitario. AlIi propusimos un simple ensayo para evaluar la importancia de siete especies vertebradas como fuente de alimentacion de M. spinolai. Conejos fueron inmunizados con proteinas sericas de cada una de las siete especies. Luego de titular, una dilucion consenso de 1/100.000 de 10s sueros inmunes detecta protein as sericas vertebradas en el18.9% de contenido intestinal de 131 insectos probados. La mayor proporcion de muestras negativas es consistente con informaciones previas que indican que estos insectos pueden resistir periodos prolongados de ayuno. Altemativamente, elIos se pudieron baber alimentado con sangre de especies de animales diferentes de aquellos de los cuales se genero e1 an tisuero. En aproximadamente el 70010 de las muestras positivas, se detecto un solo origen vertehrado de las proteinas sericas. Todos los sueros preinmunes dieron senal negativa. En 67% de los vectores positivos, se detectaron inmunoglobulinas de conejo directamente por medio de un anticuerpo de cabra especifico. Asi, los conejos silvestres, podrian jugar un papel en la transmision de T. crozi. La generación de especies volátiles consiste en la transferencia de un elemento en forma de ion o compuesto orgánico, desde la fase condensada (líquida generalmente) a la gaseosa mediante una reacción de reducción que resulta en la formación de un derivado que se desprende de la solución y se transporta mediante un gas inerte a una celda de atomización para determinarse por espectrometría atómica. Inherentemente el analito es preconcentrado, por lo que se mejoran los límites de detección y de cuantificación. Al separarse de la matriz, la interacción con la misma se limita disminuyendo y controlando las potenciales interferencias. Como no todas las especies de los elementos son capaces de ser volatilizadas, posibilita la especiación química. La formación de derivados volátiles puede realizarse química, fotoquímica y electroquímicamente. La primera es la más utilizada en los laboratorios de Química Analítica; emplea tetrahidroborato de sodio como agente reductor, genera hidruros volátiles y la determinación se realiza por espectrometría de absorción atómica. El presente trabajo propone el uso de fotones y electrones como alternativa limpia al tetrahidroborato, que es un reactivo ecotóxico, de elevado precio dada la elevada pureza en la que debe emplearse, inestable en solución acuosa y hoy por hoy cada vez más difícil de conseguir su importación. Esta estrategia representa un desafío tanto analítico como operativo ya que no hay experiencia de su uso en nuestro laboratorio, requiriéndose además el diseño y construcción de reactores adecuados. Dentro de los procedimientos experimentales implementados destaca en lo referente a la generación química, el desarrollo de un sistema en flujo para la determinación de selenio por espectrometría de absorción atómica mediante generación de hidruros por inyección secuencial y la determinación de plomo con espectrometría de emisión atómica en plasma inducido por microondas como sistema de detección. Si bien se diseñó y construyó una celda electroquímica los resultados obtenidos no fueron los esperados. Para la generación fotoquímica se construyó un reactor “in-house” y se empleó uno comercial, siendo el último el de mejor desempeño. Se desarrollaron metodologías para la determinación de mercurio y de selenio a niveles traza, elaborándose también una estrategia para la eliminación de nitrato que es uno de los principales limitantes al empleo de la técnica. En todos los casos se evaluaron las variables de influencia que afectan la formación del derivado volátil y se realizó un estudio de los principales interferentes. Las metodologías fueron optimizadas y caracterizadas, corroborándose su aplicabilidad con materiales de referencia certificados o muestras aditivadas. Los resultados obtenidos aportaron nuevos conocimientos a nuestra área, iniciando una línea de investigación en la que se va a continuar trabajando.

A novel method was developed for the determination of zinc in wine by direct-injection electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS). Unlike the OIV (Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin) reference method, which is based on flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), the proposed method does not require any sample preparation. Previous to the development of this method a reappraisal of the possible interferences found during the determination of zinc in wine by the reference OIV method was undertaken. Aiming at minimising sample preparation during FAAS method, alternatives such as the use of matched-matrix standards and the use of the Standard Additions Method (SAM) were studied, however different samples of Tannat wine produced in Uruguay exhibited widely different interference patterns, precluding the possible development of an alternate sample preparation-free FAAS method. Thus a new method based on direct-injection ETAAS was developed. The method is based on the atomic absorption of zinc at the alternate resonance wavelength of 307.6 nm. Samples are injected in the graphite furnace without preparation and the determination carried out by SAM. Quantification limit was 0.10 mg L− 1 and linearity was confirmed in the range 0.10–10 mg L− 1. Precision (repeatability, sr (%), n = 5) was calculated at three concentration levels and found to be better than 5%. When compared with the OIV reference method, results agreed within 10%. The method is fit for the purpose of routine analytical quality control, requiring no sample preparation and thus less labour and producing less chemical waste.

A summary of the resource.
A flow injection photochemical vapor generation atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-PVG-AAS) system was developed for selenium determination. The variables of influence of the photochemical generation process were evaluated and optimized. Sample already reduced to the Se(IV) state and mixed with the photochemical reagent (1.5% w/w HCOOH) was irradiated for 3 s. Selenium derivatives were transferred to an externally heated atomization cell by an argon-hydrogen mixture and selenium determined at 196.0 nm. Nitrogen was used as the carrier of the flow injection system. Nitrate is one of the most relevant interferents for the photochemical generation process; it is a very frequent concomitant as nitric acid is added for sample digestion or preservation. Hence, its removal before the vapor generation stage was studied. It was found that up to 3.0% w/w HNO3, it can be eliminated in the reduction stage of Se(VI) to Se(IV) with hydrochloric acid. For higher concentrations (up to 21% w/w HNO3), prior to the reduction step, the addition of 40% w/w H2CO and evaporation almost to dryness was successful for the abatement of the interference. The performance of the method was studied and its applicability evaluated with a Trace Element in Water Certified Reference Material (24.3 μg L−1 – Se, 2.8% w/w HNO3) and a spiked rice-flour microwave-assisted digest (103.1 μg L−1 – Se, 18.5% w/w HNO3).

A summary of the resource.
The Lamiaceae family has been described to be rich in essential oil. The aim of the present work was to identify the native species of Rio Grande do Sul with potential use as the aromatic plants. Seven species of the family were collected in the different localities of the state. The essential oils were obtained by 1h hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus. The constituents were identified by comparing their GC Kovats retention indices (RI), determined with reference to a homologous series of n-alkanes and by comparing their mass spectral fragmentation patterns with literature data. Cunila incisa and Mentha aquatica resulted in the higher esssential oil yields (1.94% v/w and 0.93% v/w, respectively. The composition of M. aquatica was 80% methone, with almost 14% pulegone. C. microcephala had 53% menthofuran and C. incisa nearly 45% of 1.8-cineol and 18% a-terpineol.

Abstract

Aqueous pulp extracts of 8 mandarin cultivars produced in Uruguay, including four commercial lines and four of their crosslinks under development, were characterized through untargeted 1H NMR-based metabolomics. The spectral features identified through this approach proved the uniqueness of each mandarin metabolome. The stability of the chemical make-up through different harvests, the evolution of the metabolome towards full fruit maturity, and the character transference from parents to their hybrids were evaluated using multivariate analysis, with the 1H NMR signals of sugars and tricarboxylic acids being the most relevant ones. The relationship between sugar sweetness power and citric acid content found in each variety correlated well with independent consumer preference tests of the mandarin cultivars under investigation. Since it is based on readily measurable chemical parameters, this chemometric model could be employed to reduce the number of samples presented to sensory panels during the early and time-consuming selection stages of new mandarin cultivars

Bismuth sulpho iodide (BiSI) belongs to the family of chalcohalides, which present several attractive electro-optic properties. In particular, BiSI is a semiconductor which could be used in X and gamma ray detection due to a band gap of 1.6 eV, density of 6.4 g cm−3, and absorption coefficient for 60 keV radiation of 5.6 cm2 g−1. This work presents a facile synthesis under solvothermal conditions of a nanocomposite consisting of BiSI nanorods and amorphous carbon structures. Furthermore, it studies its ionising radiation detection properties at room temperature, when prototype detectors were built from pellets. The construction conditions of pellets were also studied, varying the applied pressure and heat treatment to the nanocomposite. Dark current density and response to different exposure rates of a 241Am source were measured for the prototype detectors built. It was found that heat treatment of pellets considerably improves detectors performance. Dark current density was one order of magnitude lower than for the pellets without heat treatment, and its response to the 241Am source, linear, with a signal to noise ratio of 7 for 20 V. Finally, the resistivity for the heat treated detector was in the order of 1011 Ω cm, comparable to other materials studied for this application.

Bismuth-based chalcohalides have garnered significant attention over the past five years due to their promising optoelectronic properties, and applicability in photodetection, ionizing radiation detection, photocatalysis, and solar cells. Among these compounds, Bi19S27I3 stands out as a novel material with relatively unexplored synthesis and properties. In this study, we introduce a green synthesis approach for Bi19S27I3 nanostructures, employing the hot injection method under mild conditions with water as the solvent. By utilizing polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a capping agent with molar proportions [PEG : Bi] 0.5 : 1, 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 and adjusting the reaction time (5 min or 270 min), we successfully controlled the morphology, yielding either round nanoparticles, nanorolls, or a combination of both. For instance, longer reaction times such as 270 min enhance the crystallinity of the material and also encourage morphology uniformity, while PEG favors a rounded morphology. Our findings underscore the significant capping effect of PEG, particularly evident in the photocatalytic activity of Bi19S27I3 towards Cr(VI) reduction. Through this facile and efficient synthesis strategy, we tailored the morphology of Bi19S27I3 and demonstrated its efficacy in Cr(VI) photocatalysis, achieving a remarkable 91% reduction for the nanoroll-based sample with PEG: Bi [1 : 1]. This innovative approach not only provides an environmentally friendly method for synthesizing Bi19S27I3 but also highlights its potential as an effective photocatalyst for environmental remediation.

<p>In this work we present the synthesis of nanoscale heterostructures comprising sodium titanate nanotubes<br />Na2Ti2O5·H2O (NaNT) decorated with CuInS2 (CIS) quantum dots with different sizes and weight fractions. Our study focused on the structural, microstructural, electrical and optical characterization of the nanoscale heterostructure by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering, confocal Raman microscopy, UV–Vis and impedance spectroscopy analyses. In most cases, these nanoscale heterostructures exhibited considerable enhancement on the electrical conductivity explained in terms of efficient interconnections between the titanate nanotubes and CIS quantum dots. UV–Vis spectroscopy characterization showed a decrease in the optical band gap in comparison to the pure<br />NaNT from 3.68 to 3.45 eV. Impedance spectroscopy analysis confirmed the efficient electrical interconnections between titanate nanotubes, yielding not only to a decrease in the titanate junction resistance but also to an apparent decrease in the junction barrier voltage. All these features could postulate these nanoscale heterostructures as good candidates as photoelectrodes in solar cell applications.</p>

Several ZnO nanostructures such as nanosheets, nanotubes and quantum dots with Wurtzite structure have been prepared and studied as lithium-ion anode materials revealing that the increasing interface is a key aspect to improve their performance. To the best of our knowledge, up to now, there are no reports in the literature that deal directly with lithium-ion transport and charge transfer on ultrathin 2D ZnO exhibiting graphene-like and Wurtzite structures working as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Here, we present a DFT study on the lithiation of ultrathin 2D ZnO nanostructures including graphene-like (monolayer and bilayer) and Wurtzite (trilayer) structures. We focus on the ionic-electronic transport properties addressing the ionic transport through the different surfaces as well as charge transfer, equilibrium voltages, and work function variations due to lithiation for all systems. We reveal interesting features regarding how deep the reduction of Zn ions is still observed allowing more efficient charge transfer for graphene-like and Wurtzite systems working as anode material for a lithium-ion battery.

In this report, we study the tuning of the electrical transport dimensionality of polyaniline–graphene oxide quantum dots nanocomposites (PANI-GOQD) for electronic device applications. We focused this study on the microstructure and its correlations with electrical transport properties. X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering analyses showed the effect that caused the addition of GOQD on the structural and microstructural properties of polyaniline. Confocal Raman spectroscopy revealed that the presence of GOQD leads to a notorious decrease of the polaron population of polyaniline. In relation to this experimental evidence, a significant increase in resistivity was observed for PANI-GOQD nanocomposites with respect to pure polyaniline. Electrical transport showed a typical Arrhenius behavior at relatively high temperatures and a broad transition with a logarithmic dependence of the activation energy with temperature for the intermediate temperature regime. Additionally, PANI-GOQD showed an increase in the hopping transport dimensionality even in the case of low amounts of GOQD. The tuning of this dimensionality in these nanocomposites could be important for the development of novel organic electronic materials.

In situ preparation of polyaniline-ceramic nanocomposites has recently demonstrated that the electrical properties are highly improved with respect to the typical ex situ preparations. In this report, we present for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the in situ growth of titanium oxide quantum dots in polyaniline host via water vapor flow diffusion as an easily adaptable route to prepare other ceramic-polymer nanocomposites. The main relevance of this method is the possibility to prepare ceramic quantum dots from alkoxide precursors using water vapor flow into any hydrophobic polymer host and to achieve good homogeneity and size-control. In addition, we perform full characterization by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering, thermogravimetric and calorimetric analyses, confocal Raman microscopy and impedance spectroscopy analyses. The presence of the polymer host and interparticle Coulomb repulsive interactions was evaluated as an influence for the formation of ~3–8 nm equally-sized quantum dots independently of the concentration. The polyaniline polaron population showed an increase for the quantum dots diluted regime and the suppression at the concentrated regime, ascribed to the formation of chemical bonds at the interface, which was confirmed by theoretical simulations. In agreement with the previous observation, the in situ growth of ceramic quantum dots in polyaniline host via water vapor flow diffusion could be very useful as a novel approach to prepare electrode materials for energy conversion and storage applications.

Here, we report a novel strategy for the preparation of TiO2 quantum dots fillers prepared from alkoxide precursor via in situ water vapor flow diffusion into poly(N-vinylcarbazole) host. A detailed characterization by means of infrared and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry is reported. The growth mechanism of both crystallites and particles was mostly governed by the classical coarsening reaction limited growth and the polymer host showed no detectable chemical modifications at the interface or active participation in the growing process. The main relevance of our strategy respect to the typical sol-gel growth in solution is the possibility of the interruption of the reaction by simple stopping the water vapor flow diffusion into the polymer host thus achieving good control in the nanoparticles size. The thermal stability and fractal behavior of our nanocomposites were also studied by differential scanning calorimetry and in situ small angle X-ray scattering versus temperature. Strong correlations between modifications in the fractal behavior and glass transition or fusion processes were observed for these nanocomposites.

There are recent experimental reports on the preparation of edge-modified graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and its loading into conductive polymers for energy applications. Recently, we have studied the influence of the graphene quantum dots (GQDs) addition to polyaniline (PANI) conductive polymer in the electronic transport, finding important modifications in the structural and electrical properties respect to the pristine polymer. In this work, we present a mixed approach, based in first-principles molecular dynamics with time-dependent density functional calculations, for the description of the electronic dynamics, particularly for the determination of the optical properties. We found that edge modification of the GQDs favors the PANI/GQDs interaction, promoting very interesting electronic properties. Particularly, when hydroxyl chemical functional groups are present at the edges of the GQD a very good electron–hole separation during the photon excitation is obtained, demonstrating its potential use for optical applications in general and solar cells in particular

Here, we report the tuning from the positive to negative magnetoresistance response at room temperature and low applied magnetic fields (H ∼ 200 mT) for polyaniline nancomposites prepared via in situ growth of titanium oxide quantum dots. In addition, we showed experimental Raman evidence revealing that the positive magnetoresistance response in these polyaniline nanocomposites is mediated by the bipolaron mechanism. Confocal Raman spectroscopy under applied magnetic field analysis showed the decrease of the polaron population to form bipolarons of polyaniline when exposed to an applied magnetic field for the TiO2 quantum dot diluted regime. Negative magnetoresistance, observed for the TiO2 quantum dot higher concentration regime, was attributed to the suppression of polyaniline polarons probably associated with its partial chemical functionalization at the interface due to the increasing concentration of TiO2 quantum dots.
