We report a study on the preparation and characterization of polyaniline-graphene oxide (PANI-GO-X) nanocomposites focusing in the study of its structure, microstructure, and correlations with electrical transport properties under low applied electric fields. X-ray diffraction analysis showed evidence of graphene oxide (GO) blending between polyaniline fibers, and according to small angle X-ray scattering, the fractal dimensionality was quasi-one dimensional for all nanocomposites. Confocal Raman spectroscopy revealed that the addition of GO leads to a notorious decrease of the polaron population of polyaniline. A significant increase in resistivity was observed for PANI-GO-X nanocomposites with respect to pure polyaniline, in agreement with the decrease in the polaron population. The electrical transport mechanism could be explained by an Arrhenius behavior at high temperatures (T > 255 K) and a broad transition with a logarithmic dependence of the activation energy with temperature for the low temperature regime (T < 255 K). Additionally, an increase in the hopping transport dimensionality from quasi-1D to quasi-3D was observed for X = 7% GO nanocomposites. The transport properties, studied after the polarization using low applied electric fields, revealed the modification of the electrical transport at low temperatures. In addition, the electrical transport of PANI-GO-X nanocomposites followed a typical ln(σ) vs E1/2 Poole-Frenkel type dependence in the presence of low applied electric fields. At low temperatures, X = 7% GO nanocomposites showed a notorious increase in the Poole-Frenkel slope at low applied electric fields with respect to pure polyaniline. The enhancement on the electric response using low applied electric fields (E &sim; 2 V/cm) could be of great interest for the development of new organic electronic devices. Modifications in the PEDOT benzenoid and quinoid conformations were observed in the vicinities of MWCNTs, and the enrichment of PSS at the indium tin oxide electrode interface was also evidenced. In consequence, the low MWCNT loadings into PEDOT:PSS lead to an increase of the out-of-plane conductivity, but the heavier MWCNT loadings lead to a drastic decrease. The tuning of the doping level of these polymer composites and the understanding of the interface structure are crucial to fabricate electrodes with higher out-of-plane conductivities for organic solar cell applications. The optical properties and the geometric characteristics of multivacancy graphene quantum dots systems are studied using Density Functional Theory calculations, in a systematic way, in relation to the number of carbon atoms extracted and the relative configurations that could be present in the cluster. The way to characterize these configurations was using the complementary figure model -i.e. the figure formed by the carbon atoms extracted in order that the vacancy could be created-. The number of pentagonal or square figures formed after structure optimization, as well as their relative location, is found to be very relevant to determine the curvature level of the graphene quantum dot, but the occurrence of higher order cycles have a non-negligible role and cannot be ruled out. However, this occurrence is much dependent on the specific multivacancy to be studied and prevents to reach more accurate models that could allow the prediction of the magnitude of the curvature. We found unexpected instability in dendritic-like vacancies and we suggest that the non-periodic character of the graphene quantum dot, in contrast to graphene, would prevent such vacancies to be relaxed in a higher extension, causing this kind of systems to be less stable than, for example, zigzag complementary figures systems. In this report, we present the synthesis of few layer MoS2 and polyaniline/MoS2 nanocomposites with a complete structural characterization by atomic force microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy followed by AC impedance spectroscopy and thermoelectric characterizations. Our structural studies revealed that the intercalation of MoS2 nanosheets into polyaniline fibers produces a decrease in the MoS2 interlayer distance and a slight increase in the degree of order of the nanocomposites. In addition, an increment in the polaron Raman signature was observed with the addition of MoS2 nanosheets into polyaniline nanocomposites in agreement with the enhancement of the electrical conductivity, i.e. up to ~ 2.5 S cm−1. The addition of low amounts of MoS2 also lead to an increment of the seebeck coefficient (up to 5.3 µV K−1) and power factor (up to 0.0070 µV m−1 K−2). This report showed excellent synergistic effect between PANI and MoS2 nanosheets which could be of great importance for future applications of these nanocomposites, mainly as thermoelectric materials. Ab-initio calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) have been performed to study systems where a first row transition metal atom is embedded in a rippled graphene due to the existence of an 8-order multivacancy. In addition to these cases, also the inclusion of a zinc atom, with a 3d10 electron configuration, was also studied. Structural distortions and magnetic response for each system were studied. A correlation was found for the magnitude of the rippling and the distortion in the vacancy. Variation in the trends was found for Cu and Zn cases, which were explained on the basis of the filling of the 3dx2-y2 orbital. All the systems exhibit lower magnetic moment in comparison to the metal-less system. The quenching of the magnetic moment due to the carbon atoms in the vacancy is observed for Sc and Cu. Here we present a theoretical study based on density functional theory (DFT) of the electronic and optical properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) doped with sulfur and nitrogen atoms. Unlike the actual literature, which focusses mostly in the edge functionalization of GQDs, our report focusses on the effect of sulfur and nitrogen atomic dopants positioned at the center and near the edge of the GQD carbon backbone structure. According to formation energies, we evidence that doping is more favorable for nitrogen than sulfur, and that the near-edge doping is more favorable than center doping. Regarding the electronic properties, there is a clear shift to lower wavelength in the UV–Vis spectra when using the CAM-B3LYP exchange correlation functional, with respect to B3LYP functional for all the structures, showing a better concordance with experimental data. As a general trend, the major transition observed in the nitrogen doped system is situated at higher wavelength, while in the case of the sulfur doped system, the transition is located at lower wavelength when comparing with the undoped GQDs. This observation is also in good agreement with the experimental trend observed for nitrogen and sulfur-doped GQDs for which a redshift and blueshift in the UV–Vis absorption is typically observed respect to the undoped case, respectively. All of this justify the selected methodology for describing the electronic and optical properties of doped GQDs and provide additional insights to correlate with the optical properties observed experimentally. Here, we report the preparation of carbon-coated cobalt-doped olivine nanoparticles (LiFePO4/C) by the citrate gel precursor combustion method. The major contribution of this work is to reveal insights and side effects of cobalt doping, not only in the structure, microstructure, and electrochemical performance of olivine nanoparticles, but also in the consequences on the carbon coating characteristics. Our structural and microstructural studies by means of several instrumentation techniques revealed that the presence of low amounts of cobalt during the synthesis leads to the apparent formation of more porous channels in the carbon coating. In consequence, the electrochemical characterization showed an enhancement in the capacity and diffusion constants for cobalt-doped LiFePO4/C samples in comparison with cobalt-undoped samples. In the present report, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) doping mechanism of regioregular poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT). First, we focus on the effects of LiTFSI doping in both crystalline and amorphous structures of P3HT by performing a complete structural analysis supported by classical molecular dynamics (MD) calculations. Then, we study the effects of LiTFSI doping on electronic properties such as charge transfer and charge transport by performing Raman and impedance spectroscopy, in both cases supported by density of functionals theory (DFT) calculations using periodic boundary conditions. Our structural analysis suggests that the LiTFSI dopant is mainly located in the amorphous region and only a small fraction is located in the crystalline region. In addition, our DFT calculations also suggest that the LiTFSI dopant can effectively act as an electronic acceptor only when it is located in the vicinity of and is accessible to the thiophene rings of P3HT due to the formation of a π···Li chemical bond as an anchoring mechanism, permitting the electronic charge loss of thiophene rings through the sulfonyl groups. A thorough understanding of the LiTFSI doping mechanism of poly(alkyl thiophenes) (P3HT in this particular case) is crucial to elucidating not only the electronic but also the eventual mixed ionic–electronic transport mechanism and its promising properties, particularly as electrodes for lithium ion battery applications. The influence of the sticking probability P and the drift velocity on kinetics and structure formation arising in coupled aggregation and sedimentation processes was studied by means of simulations. For this purpose, a large prism with no periodical conditions for the sedimentation direction was considered allowing for sediment formation at the prism base. The time evolution of the cluster size distribution ~CSD! and weight-average cluster size (nw) were determined in three different regions of the prism. The cluster morphology and the sediment structure were also analyzed. We found that the coupled aggregation and sedimentation processes in the bulk are governed by P for short times, and controlled by the Pe´clet number Pe for long times. In the lower part of the reaction volume, where the sediment grows, the local nw grows at sufficiently large times analytically with an exponent of four. This behavior seems to be independent of Pe and P. The obtained results are in good agreement with the experimental data reported by C. Allain, M. Cloitre, and M. Wafra @Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 1478 ~1995!# and support the idea of a possible internal cluster rearrangement for the experiments. The use of Cannabis for medical purposes is rapidly expanding and is usually employed as a self-medication for the treatment of insomnia disorder. However, the effect on sleep seems to depend on multiple factors such as composition of the Cannabis, dosage and route of administration. Vaporization is the recommended route for the administration of Cannabis for medical purposes; however, there is no published research about the effects of vaporized Cannabis on sleep, neither in laboratory animals, nor in humans. Because previous reports suggested that low doses of THC have sedating effects, the aim of the present study was to characterize in rats, the acute effects on sleep induced by the administration of low doses of THC by means of vaporization of a specific type of Cannabis (THC 11.5% and negligible amounts of other cannabinoids). For this purpose, polysomnographic recordings in chronically prepared rats were performed during 6 h in the light and dark phases. Animals were treated with 0 (control), 40, 80 and 200 mg of Cannabis immediately before the beginning of recordings; the THC plasma concentrations with these doses were low (up to 6.7 ng/mL with 200 mg). A quantitative EEG analyses by means of the spectral power and coherence estimations was also performed for the highest Cannabis dose. Compared to control, 200 mg of Cannabis increased NREM sleep time during the light phase, but only during the first hour of recording. Interestingly, no changes on sleep were observed during the dark (active) phase or with lower doses of Cannabis. Cannabis 200 mg also produced EEG power reductions in different cortices, mainly for high frequency bands during W and REM sleep, but only during the light phase. On the contrary, a reduction in the sleep spindles intra-hemispheric coherence was observed during NREM sleep, but only during the dark phase. In conclusion, administration of low doses of THC by vaporization of a specific type of Cannabis produced a small increment of NREM sleep, but only during the light (resting) phase. This was accompanied by subtle modifications of high frequency bands power (during the light phase) and spindle coherence (during the dark phase), which are associated with cognitive processing. Our results reassure the importance of exploring the sleep-promoting properties of Cannabis. Studies exploring the effect of compounds that modulate the endocannabinoid system on sexual behavior have yielded contradictory results. However, the effect of smoked Cannabis in women has been consistently associated with an increase in sexual drive. Therefore, it can be speculated that vaporized Cannabis will augment sexually motivated components of the sexual behavior of female rats. To test this hypothesis, we compared the sexual behavior of late-proestrous female rats in a bilevel chamber after vaporizing 0, 200 or 400 mg of Cannabis flowers (containing 18% of delta-9-THC and undetectable levels of cannabidiol) during 10 min. We found that both doses of Cannabis increased the duration of the lordosis response, whereas the highest dose also reduced the lordosis quotient of females. The lowest dose of Cannabis augmented the display of hops and darts without altering the expression of sexual solicitations of females, while the highest one did not affect the expression of hops and darts but reduced sexual solicitations. These effects were not accompanied by alterations of females' ambulatory behavior. The increment of the duration of lordosis response produced by both doses of Cannabis could be associated to a general effect of this drug in sensory processing, as can be an enhancement of females' sensory reactivity to male's stimulation. However, the reduction in the display of solicitations and lordosis in response to mounting observed in females exposed to the highest dose when compared to control and 200 mg of Cannabis groups indicates a reduction of sexual receptivity and motivation. This differential effect of vaporized Cannabis according to the dose employed, suggests that it modulates sexual behavior in a complex way, impacting neural circuits that control different aspects of this social behavior. We present the first worldwide study on the apple (Malus × domestica) fruit microbiome that examines questions regarding the composition and the assembly of microbial communities on and in apple fruit. Results revealed that the composition and structure of the fungal and bacterial communities associated with apple fruit vary and are highly dependent on geographical location. The study also confirmed that the spatial variation in the fungal and bacterial composition of different fruit tissues exists at a global level. Fungal diversity varied significantly in fruit harvested in different geographical locations and suggests a potential link between location and the type and rate of postharvest diseases that develop in each country. The global core microbiome of apple fruit was represented by several beneficial microbial taxa and accounted for a large fraction of the fruit microbial community. The study provides foundational information about the apple fruit microbiome that can be utilized for the development of novel approaches for the management of fruit quality and safety, as well as for reducing losses due to the establishment and proliferation of postharvest pathogens. It also lays the groundwork for studying the complex microbial interactions that occur on apple fruit surfaces. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and fumonisin B1 (FB1) are mycotoxins that often co-occur in feedstuffs. The ingestion of AFB1 causes aflatoxicosis in humans and animals. Sodium bentonite (NaB), a cheap non-nutritive unselective sequestering agent incorporated in animal diets, can effectively prevent aflatoxicosis. Fumonisins are responsible for equine leukoencephalomalacia and porcine pulmonary oedema, and often have subclinical toxic effects in poultries. Fumonisin B1 and aflatoxin B1 are both strongly adsorbed in vitro on sodium bentonite. Co-adsorption studies, carried out with a weight ratio of FB1 to AFB1 that mimics the natural occurrence (200:1), showed that FB1 greatly decreases the in vitro ability of NaB to adsorb AFB1. The ability of two activated carbons to adsorb FB1 was also investigated. Both carbons showed high affinity for FB1. A complex behaviour of the FB1 adsorption isotherms with pH was observed. In vitro results suggest that under natural contamination levels of AFB1 and FB1, a mixture of activated carbon and sodium bentonite might be potentially useful for prevention of sub-acute aflatoxicosis. The ethyl acetate extract showed the highest bioactivity of the tested extracts, which contained 0.12% monofluoroacetic acid. On engorged female, the ethyl acetate extract showed a lethal concentration 50% – LC50 = 30.08mgml−1, inhibitory concentration 50% – IC50 = 5.79mgml−1 and lethal time 50% – LT50 = 4.72 days; 100% reproduction was controlled at concentrations of 50mgml−1 and on larvae the ethyl acetate extract showed a LC50 = 2.46mgml−1. No alkaloids were detected in any of the extracts. This is the first report on the acaricidal activity of P. marcgravii extracts against R. microplus as well as the acaricidal properties of a plant species containing monofluoroacetic acid. Strategies to increase vegetable consumption that go beyond their health benefits and the recommendation to consume a specific number of portions a day are necessary. In this sense, a more in-depth understanding of what consumers consider as “vegetables” is of interest, as it can highlight possible mismatches between guidelines and everyday experiences and contribute to the design of public campaigns and interventions. In this context, the aim of the study were: to explore how the plant-based dish category is represented for consumers, to evaluate differences among consumers with different familiarity towards vegetables, to identify the sensory properties that drive typicality and expected liking, and to investigate the relationship between typicality of the dishes and their expected liking and sensory characteristics. One hundred and twenty three consumers were considered for the study. Consumers were characterized for their level of familiarity toward vegetables and pulses and through two psycho-attitudinal questionnaires: Food Neophobia Scale and Health and Taste Attitudes Questionnaire. A total of 80 pictures of plant-based dishes were evaluated to assess the expected liking, healthiness and preparation level of each dish. Consumers were asked to rate and the typicality of the dishes by rating their agreement with the sentence “This is a plant-based dish”. In addition, the sensory properties characterizing each dish were evaluated using Check-All-That-Apply question. Results indicated a graded structure of the plant-based dish category, with some category members more typical than others. Specific recipe typologies, such as salads and boiled vegetables, were perceived as more typical than others, such as soups and fried vegetables. Expected sensory attributes were found to influence the typicality of a dish. The attributes Bitter, Green, Not very intense flavor, Orange, Sour and Watery positively influenced typicality, while Brown and Creamy negatively influenced it. Typicality affected expected liking for the dishes but its influence depended on consumers’ level of familiarity toward vegetables and pulses. In fact, among consumers with a low level of familiarity, the lower the typicality, the higher the expected liking. A less strong association was found among consumers with a high level of familiarity. These results stress that promotion of vegetable consumption targeted to vegetables dislikers should therefore consider their representation of the category, in order to limit the exposure to features with a negative hedonic value. B polymorph of titanium dioxide (TiO2(B)) appears as a metastable phase during thermal annealing of low content sodium layered titanate nanostructures obtained via the widely used hydrothermal synthesis. In addition, the computed formation energy for the TiO2(B) (0 0 1) slabs in the order of the one calculated for anatase (1 0 1) which represents one of the most stable TiO2 surfaces. This encourages the study of this polymorph which could gain prominence in TiO2 applications at the nanoscale. In a first instance ultrathin TiO2(B) sheets, parallel to crystallographic planes (0 0 1) and (1 0 0), are investigated and compared to other well know TiO2 polymorphs, such as rutile and anatase surfaces. Then the adsorption of formic acid on (0 0 1) and (1 0 0) – less stable – TiO2(B) dry ultrathin sheets was studied as the first step for further evaluation of TiO2(B) nanostructures for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) applications. The results show that the monodentate through the carbonyl group configuration is the most stable for (0 0 1) sheet while bidentate dissociated configuration is the most stable for (1 0 0) sheet being the computed adsorption energies 0.51 eV and 1.49 eV, respectively. The evaluated reactivity of TiO2(B) slabs is comparable with anatase and indicates that it could be a good adsorbent for common dyes used for dye sensitized solar cells purposes. Problem Untreated celiac disease (CD) is often associated with early miscarriages, infertility, and alterations in menstrual cycle. Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) antibodies could be involved by interfering with tTG transamidating activity and &frasl; or biological functions mediated by its interaction with fibronectin (FN). Method of study The correlation between the presence of extra-digestive disorders and the reactivity of sera against tTG-FN and its effects on tTG transamidating activity was analyzed in a group or 50 women with recently diagnosed CD. Results Heterogeneous behavior was observed among serum samples derived from patients with different complaints, suggesting that differences in fine specificity patterns could condition clinical outcome. Sera from women with gynecological and &frasl; or obstetric problems induced significant inhibition of in vitro enzymatic activity in comparison with those without these kinds of disorders. Conclusions The significant correlation observed between serum effects and clinical profile suggests a putative involvement of tTG-specific antibodies in gynecological and &frasl; or obstetric disorders during active CD.
