Nowadays, new strategies for pest and disease control to be used in rotation with or replacement of conventional pesticides are required. Essential oils (EOs), as botanical pesticides, provide a potential resource to develop more environmentally friendly and less toxic means of control to be applied in different produces. Tomato crop is affected by many insects and fungal diseases, among which, the insects Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Tuta absoluta, and the fungi Alternaria spp. and Botrytis cinerea are of great incidence. In this work two EOs from Uruguayan specimens of the local species Eupatorium buniifolium and the world-wide distributed Artemisia absinthium (Asteraceae) were characterized in their chemical composition and insecticidal and antifungal activities. We found that the EO from local A. absinthium is rich in oxygenated monoterpenes and belongs to the thujone chemotype (β-Thujone abundance is 56 ± 2 %, and α-Thujone, 1.67 ± 0.07 %). On the other hand, monoterpene hydrocarbons (α-Pinene, 22 ± 2 %) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons [(E)-β-Guaiene, 10 ± 1 %] are the most abundant components of E. buniifolium EO. Eventhough both EOs chemically differ, they exhibit insecticidal and antifungal activity not only by direct contact but also by contact with their vapors against the tested organisms. These results may indicate that these EOs could be raw material to develop control agents to manage some of the main pests and fungal diseases of tomato crops with only one kind of treatment. We have investigated whether the chemical components of fetal fluids (FFs), which elicit repulsion in late gestating ewes, are also those responsible for the attractiveness of fetal fluids at parturition. An aqueous fraction of FFs (A1), obtained after extraction with hexane, was tested for repulsion in late-pregnant ewes and for attraction at parturition. We also investigated if the repulsive and attractive characteristics of this A1 fraction were maintained after an additional extraction with dichloromethane (DCM, CH2Cl2) that produced two more fractions (aqueous/high polarity: A2 and dichloromethane/medium polarity: DCM). Thus, late-pregnant ewes were tested for repulsion of aqueous extracts of FFs (A1, A2 and DCM fractions) in a two-choice test of food preference, whereas parturient ewes were tested for attraction toward these same fractions in a two-choice test of licking warm spongy cloths. The A1 fraction was repulsive to late-pregnant ewes and attractive to parturient females. In contrast, neither the A2 nor the DCM fractions were repulsive to late-pregnant ewes, whereas both fractions were attractive to parturient ones. The discordance between the repulsive and attractive properties of the A2 and DCM fractions suggests that the attractiveness of FFs for parturient ewes and its repulsiveness for females outside the peripartum period depend on mixtures of substances that are at least partially different. A bioactive-guided investigation of the hydro-ethanolic extract of aerial parts of Aristeguietia glutinosa Lam. resulted in the isolation of two diterpenoids, (+)-15-hydroxy-labd-7-en-17-al (1) and (+)-13,14,15,16-tetranor-labd-7-en-17,12-olide (2), as the anti-Trypanosoma cruzi active principles. The structures of 1 and 2 were determined by spectroscopic analysis. The hydro-ethanolic extract showed anti-T. cruzi activity (IC50 = 19.6 microg/mL) whereas the isolated compounds 1 and 2 were near to seven- and one and a half-fold (IC50 = 3.0 and 15.6 microg/mL), respectively more active than the original extract. Labdene 1, equipotent as the reference compound (Nifurtimox), displayed low hemolytic activity, low toxicity against murine macrophages, and absence of mutagenicity. In this paper we study the aggregates formed by self-association of these compounds from two quinoa saponin fractions (FQ70 and FQ90) as well as several distinctive nanostructures obtained after their complexation with different ratios of cholesterol (CHOL) and phosphatidylcholine (PC). The FQ70 and FQ90 fractions were obtained by reversed-phase preparative chromatography. The structural features of their resulting aggregates were determined by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Novel nanosized spherical vesicles formed by self-association with mean diameter about 100-200 nm were observed in FQ70 aqueous solutions whereas worm-like micelles an approximate width of 20 nm were detected in FQ90 aqueous solutions. Under experimental conditions similar to those reported for the preparation of Quillaja saponaria ISCOM matrices, tubular and ring-like micelles arose from FQ70:CHOL:PC and FQ90:CHOL:PC formulations, respectively. However, under these conditions no cage-like ISCOM matrices were observed. The saponin composition of FQ70 and FQ90 seems to determine the nanosized structures viewed by TEM. Phytolaccagenic acid, predominant in FQ70 and FQ90 fractions, is accountable for the formation of the nanosized vesicles and tubular structures observed by TEM in the aqueous solutions of both samples. Conversely, ring-like micelles observed in FQ90:CHOL:PC complexes can be attributed to the presence of less polar saponins present in FQ90, in particular those derived from oleanolic acid. La importancia de las enfermedades de plantas en la agricultura moderna es un hecho ampliamente documentado y reconocido. Las enfermedades tienen el potencial de destruir enteramente las cosechas o reducir en forma crónica el rendimiento de la mayoría de los cultivos, obligan a tomar medidas de combate que aumentan los costos de producción, y afectan la calidad y la durabilidad de los productos cosechados. Alrededor de dos tercios de las enfermedades de las plantas son causadas por hongos. La utilización intensiva de compuestos antimicrobianos en la agricultura industrial favorece la aparición de resistencias. Esto, unido a cambios frecuentes en los límites de aplicación, límites de residuos en el ambiente y en el producto, lleva a que este sea un sector altamente dinámico con una rápida rotación de los compuestos activos. Los hongos comparten con las plantas y los animales ciertos agentes infecciosos tales como bacterias y hongos patógenos y por lo tanto tienen el potencial de producir metabolitos con actividad farmacológica de uso en humanos y cultivares. Los “microhongos” son una fuente ya establecida como importante de compuestos antimicrobianos. Sin embargo, para los “macrohongos” (aquellos cuyo cuerpo de fructificación es visible a simple vista, la gran mayoría perteneciente al filo Basidiomycota) sólo unos pocos compuestos aislados se encuentran en la etapa de ensayos clínicos y de campo. 2 El presente trabajo apuntó a la enorme diversidad metabólica de los microorganismos, utilizando basidiomicetes como fuente original. Para eso se abordaron dos estrategias diferentes, el trabajo con los micelios y caldos extracelulares de cultivos fúngicos y el trabajo con los cuerpos de fructificación. A partir de cultivos de diecinueve hongos basidiomicetes se prepararon cincuenta y tres extractos que posteriormente fueron sometidos a ensayos biológicos. Cuarenta por ciento de los extractos presentaron actividad frente a los patógenos humanos evaluados y diecisiete por ciento de los extractos presentaron actividad frente a los fitopatógenos evaluados. Para la cepa más prometedora, se estudió la influencia de variables en las condiciones de cultivo sobre la producción de metabolitos de interés para obtener cantidades de extracto suficientes para avanzar en el aislamiento de los compuestos responsables de la actividad antimicrobiana. Considerando que los resultados obtenidos no fueron los esperados se recorrió el camino inverso, aislando compuestos con actividad antimicrobiana a partir de cuerpos de fructificación de Gymnopilus junonius y posteriormente induciendo la producción de los mismos en cultivos fúngicos de dicho hongo. El agregado de agentes epigenéticos influyó positivamente en la riqueza química de los extractos, no incidiendo en la producción de bisnoryangonina, compuesto aislado con promisoria actividad antimicrobiana frente a S. aureus meticilino resistente. The relative affinity of the recently synthesized receptor bambus[6]uril (BU[6]) towards halides in encapsulation processes was theoretically studied by means of M06-2X and B3LYP calculations. The gas-phase results do not follow the affinity experimentally observed in solution, as the largest encapsulation energy was obtained for fluoride, and the smallest one for iodide. Nevertheless, this finding is in agreement with the gas phase hydrogen bond energies determined for the CH4⋯X– complexes, X = F–, Cl–, Br–, I–. The structural changes experienced by the receptor when the halide is inside decrease as we move from fluoride to iodide. Thus, the relative affinity is due to a balance between the hydrogen-bond energies between the methine groups inside the cavity and the anions (CH⋯X–) and the deformation of the receptor induced by the anion. When solvents effects are considered, the affinity of BU[6] for halides is in line with experimental evidence. In effect, the difference between the computed for iodide and bromide is 1 kcal/mol, just 0.5 kcal/mol smaller than the experimental value. The effect of the counter ion was evaluated using Na+, but inclusion of the latter worsens the agreement with experiment. Finally, we discuss methodological problems observed for the BU[6]·X– complexes. Dispersion-corrected density functional theory is utilized to study the addition of aryl radicals to perfect and defective graphene. Although the perfect sheet shows a low reactivity against aryl diazonium salts, the agglomeration of these groups and the addition onto defect sites improves the feasibility of the reaction by increasing binding energies per aryl group up to 27 kcal mol−1. It is found that if a single phenyl radical interacts with graphene, the covalent and noncovalent additions have similar binding energies, but in the particular case of the nitrophenyl group, the adsorption is stronger than the chemisorption. The single vacancy shows the largest reactivity, increasing the binding energy per aryl group by about 80 kcal mol−1. The zigzag edge ranks second, enhancing the reactivity 5.4 times with respect to the perfect sheet. The less reactive defect site is the Stone–Wales type, but even in this case the addition of an isolated aryl radical is exergonic. The arylation process is favored if the groups are attached nearby and on different sublattices. This is particularly true for the ortho and para positions. However, the enhancement of the binding energies decreases quickly if the distance between the two aryl radicals is increased, thereby making the addition on the perfect sheet difficult. A bandgap of 1–2 eV can be opened on functionalization of the graphene sheets with aryl radicals, but for certain configurations the sheet can maintain its semimetallic character even if there is one aryl radical per eight carbon atoms. At the highest level of functionalization achieved, that is, one aryl group per five carbon atoms, the bandgap is 1.9 eV. Regarding the effect of using aryl groups with different substituents, it is found that they all induce the same bandgap and thus the presence of NO2, H, or Br is not relevant for the alteration of the electronic properties. Finally, it is observed that the presence of tetrafluoroborate can induce metallic character in graphene. Herein, by using dispersion-corrected density functional theory, we investigated the Diels–Alder chemistry of pristine and defective graphene. Three dienes were considered, namely 2,3-dimethoxy-1,3-butadiene (DMBD), 9-methylanthracene (9MA), and 9,10-dimethylanthracene (910DMA). The dienophiles that were assayed were tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and maleic anhydride (MA). When pristine graphene acted as the dienophile, we found that the cycloaddition products were 47–63 kcal mol−1 less stable than the reactants, thus making the reaction very difficult. The presence of Stone–Wales translocations, 585 double vacancies, or 555-777 reconstructed double vacancies did not significantly improve the reactivity because the cycloaddition products were still located at higher energy than the reactants. However, for the addition of 910DMA to single vacancies, the product showed comparable stability to the separated reactants, whereas for unsaturated armchair edges the reaction was extremely favorable. With regards the reactions with dienophiles, for TCNE, the cycloaddition product was metastable. In the case of MA, we observed a reaction product that was less stable than the reactants by 50 kcal mol−1. For the reactions between graphene as a diene and the dienophiles, we found that the most-promising defects were single vacancies and unsaturated armchair edges, because the other three defects were much-less reactive. Thus, we conclude that the reactions with these above-mentioned dienes may proceed on pristine or defective sheets with heating, despite being endergonic. The same statement also applies to the dienophile maleic anhydride. However, for TCNE, the reaction is only likely to occur onto single vacancies or unsaturated armchair edges. We conclude that the dienophile character of graphene is slightly stronger than its behavior as a diene. Risk situations related to brownfield sites, contaminated lands and groups exposed to toxic substances are common in South America. In some of these situations, there is a lack of institutional response to the risks and consequences coupled with a failure to communicate the risks to those affected. Drawing on empirical research in 4 South American communities exposed to lead contamination, we investigated which strategies of risk communication (RC) have been used by researchers to communicate the risks of contamination, and the possible impacts of these strategies. Considering that risk situations of contaminated lands are characterized by uncertainty/strain/controversy, and that their residents are in a collective stress situation because of the physical conditions in their neighborhood and possible impacts on their health, in our study we argue for the need of participative RC in medical geology studies. The participative RC is based on cultural/social elements, trust, open dialogue and collective learning process to implement policies for mitigating risks and for a sustainable future. However, the analysis of these cases suggests that the efforts of RC have focused only on information transmission and public persuasion. We noticed that RC did not promote an open dialogue, or any discussion about the life styles of locals, which gave the impression that research results have not been properly released, and therefore, the general understanding (by assorted actors) is that environmental/health research is not being undertaken for the public good. In the present investigation, the effect of the Mo in the LaNi3,6Co0,7Mn(0.4−x)Al0,3Mox AB5-type hydrogen storage alloys was studied. The alloys structural and microstructural characterizations were performed by means of X-ray diffraction phase analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties were studied through the measurements of discharge capacity, activation process, rate capability and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the electrodes. The replacement of manganese by molybdenum, in the intermediate concentration tested (2% w/w) has a positive effect. This alloy presents the greatest discharge capacity, the closest potential to system equilibrium potential and therefore the lowest overpotentials. This alloy also has the best behavior for high-rate dischargeability and in concordance, the lowest charge transfer resistance. This improvement is thought to be due to an increase in the active area. Phycocyanin, a blue protein extracted from Spirulina spp, shows promising characteristics that made it suitable for its use as natural dye in photovoltaic devices as the dye sensitized solar cells. In this work, a study of the aqueous solution-phase photochemistry, photophysics, spectroscopy, voltammetry and thermal stability of phycocyanin is presented. Suitable redox potentials (Eox = 1.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and a value of 1.96 V for E0,0 (i.e., the energy difference between the vibrationally relaxed levels of the first electronic excited state, S1, and the ground state, S0 of phycocyanin), allows the calculation of energetic profiles that in comparison with the conduction band of the anatase-TiO2 and I-/I3- electrolyte, could predict electron transfer with these components of the cell. The data reported herein should not only help to evaluate the potential use of phycocyanin as sensitizer for solar cells, but should also help in the development of novel solar cells where the photoinduced behavior of this protein can be controlled. Product insights beyond hedonic responses are increasingly sought and include emotional associations. Various word-based questionnaires for direct measurement exist and an emoji variant was recently proposed. Herein, emotion words are replaced with emoji conveying a range of emotions. Further assessment of emoji questionnaires is needed to establish their relevance in food-related consumer research. Methodological research contributes hereto and in the present research the effects of question wording and response format are considered. Specifically, a web study was conducted with Chinese consumers (n=750) using four seafood names as stimuli (mussels, lobster, squid and abalone). Emotional associations were elicited using 33 facial emoji. Explicit reference to "how would you feel?" in the question wording changed product emoji profiles minimally. Consumers selected only a few emoji per stimulus when using CATA (check-all-that-apply) questions, and layout of the CATA question had only a small impact on responses. A comparison of CATA questions with forced yes/no questions and RATA (rate-all-that-apply) questions revealed an increase in frequency of emoji use for yes/no questions, but not a corresponding improvement in sample discrimination. For the stimuli in this research, which elicited similar emotional associations, RATA was probably the best methodological choice, with 8.5 emoji being used per stimulus, on average, and increased sample discrimination relative to CATA (12% vs. 6-8%). The research provided additional support for the potential of emoji surveys as a method for measurement of emotional associations to foods and beverages and began contributing to development of guidelines for implementation. Research on the relative influence of package features on children's perception of food products is still necessary to aid policy design and development. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the relative influence of two front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition labelling schemes, the traffic light system and Chilean warning system, and label design on children's choice of two popular snack foods in Uruguay, wafer cookies and orange juice. A total of 442 children in grades 4 to 6 from 12 primary schools in Montevideo (Uruguay) participated in the study. They were asked to complete a choice-conjoint task with wafer cookies and orange juice labels, varying in label design and the inclusion of FOP nutrition information. Half of the children completed the task with labels featuring the traffic-light system (n = 217) and the other half with labels featuring the Chilean warning system (n = 225). Children's choices of wafer cookies and juice labels was significantly influenced by both label design and FOP nutritional labels. The relative impact of FOP nutritional labelling on children's choices was higher for the warning system compared to the traffic-light system. Results from the present work stress the need to regulate the design of packages and the inclusion of nutrient claims, and provide preliminary evidence of the potential of warnings to discourage children's choice of unhealthful products. Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that is released into the environment from geological and anthropogenic sources and its compounds are highly mobile and toxic at trace level. A simple method based on cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (CV AAS) for the determination of total mercury in irrigation waters and extractable mercury in paddy soil was validated, using a low-cost sample introduction -1 device. The validated method presented a linear range from 0.2 to 2.0 µg L ; detection limits were 0.03 -1 -1 µg L and 0.012 mg kg (dry basis) for irrigation water and paddy soil respectively. Trueness was evaluated using spiked samples; the mean recovery was 101% (n=8) and 99.4% (n=6) for irrigation water and paddy soil respectively. Precision, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD), was 9.6% (n=10) and 24% (n=8) for irrigation water and paddy soil respectively. These figures of merit were adequate for the determination of total Hg levels in irrigation waters and extractable Hg in paddy soils established by the regulations. To assess analytical performance several samples from the Eastern zone of Uruguay were analysed. Sample preparation consisted of an acid digestion using an economical pressurized reactor. Hg levels in waters and paddy soils were all below the maximum allowed and therefore were apt for agricultural use. These results are very important not only locally but also for the world since Uruguay is currently among the eight-largest paddy rice and milled rice exporter in the world. This method can be an alternative instead of the more expensive techniques mostly not available in developing countries and very easy to implement in environmental laboratories. One hundred and three yeasts isolated from soil samples from King George Island and Tierra del Fuego province were screened in relation with their capability to produce pectinolytic enzymes. Although all the yeasts showed well-developed colonies at 20 °C, only eight showed a clear halo around the colony, indicative of pectin degradation. A secondary screening demonstrated that only four yeasts were capable to produce pectinases at low temperatures (8 °C). It could be seen that the selected yeasts were able to grow and produce high levels of polygalacturonase activity when submerged fermentations were performed using pectin-containing fruit wastes as substrates. None of the strains produced neither lyase nor rhamnogalacturonan hydrolase activities. Regarding pectin esterase activity, it was only produced in lower amounts by G. pullulans 8E (0.022 U ml−1). A TLC analysis of the substrate cleavage pattern of the pectinolytic systems was consistent with an endo-type activity. The clarification of apple juice was only accomplished by G. pullulans pectinolytic system, with a clarification of 80% (%T650) using 4 U/ml of enzyme at 20 °C. As far as we concern this work describes for the first time the production of pectinases by the cold-adapted yeasts species Cystofilobasidium infirmominiatum, Cryptococcus adeliensis and G. pullulans. We examine the conformational preferences of the furan- and thiophene-based arylamides, N-methylfuran-2-carboxamide (3) and N-methylthiophene-2-carboxamide (4), using a combination of computational methods and NMR experiments. The compound choice stems from their use as foldamer building blocks. We quantify the differences in the conformational rigidity of the two compounds, which governs corresponding foldamer conformations. Specifically, we demonstrate the effects of intramolecular hydrogen bonding (H-bonding), geometrical patterns and solvent polarity on arylamide conformations by comparing 3, 4 and previously studied ortho-methoxy N-methylbenzamide (1) and ortho-methylthio N-methylbenzamide (2). The study reveals that compound 3, despite its non-optimal S(5)-type H-bond geometry, retains a large portion of the H-bonded (eclipsed) conformation even in polar protic solvents. This behaviour is consistent with the quantum mechanical (QM) torsional energy profile. The percentages of H-bonded conformers that 3 retains are just slightly smaller than those of 1, which has a stronger S(6)-type H-bond. As for 2 and 4, the replacement of the O atom in 1 by an S atom in 2 results in a 70–90% loss of the H-bonded conformer in solution. However, the equivalent O to S replacement in 3 (leading to 4) causes only 15–30% loss of the eclipsed conformers in 4. Therefore, conformational preferences of 4 are very different from 2, in contrast to the similarity between 3 and 1. This study shows how the interplay of several forces modulates the conformational flexibility of arylamides. It also attests the strategy we are developing, which leads to accurate prediction of foldamer structure. The vital component of this strategy is the re-parameterization of critical force field parameters based on QM potential energy profiles, as well as validation of these parameters using experimental data in solution. This paper presents the study of a simple and fast method to prepare an activated hydrothermal carbon supported nickel electrocatalyst (Ni/aHC) for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline medium. The cyclic voltammogram obtained for the Ni/aHC sample in a 1.0 mol L−1 NaOH solution shows an anodic and a cathodic peak. These redox couple reaction peaks can be related to the reversible formation of (NiO)OH. The catalytic activity of the Ni/aHC sample regarding the EOR is clearly evident from the cyclic voltammogram obtained in presence of ethanol, where a significant increase in the current density from 0.55 V vs. Hg/HgO is observed. This potential value, related with the onset potential (Eonset) of the EOR, is very close to the corresponding (NiO)OH formation potential, confirming that this species is directly involved in the EOR on the Ni/aHC electrocatalyst. The in-situ Attenuated Total Reflectance FTIR (in-situ ATR-FTIRS) spectra of this sample show two intense peaks related with acetate ion formation. Based on the ATR-FTIRS and electrochemical analyses, and in the literature information, a reaction pathway of the EOR on Ni/aHC in alkaline medium is proposed.
