La concentración y las formas químicas de los elementos en el ambiente están en continuo cambio y las aguas naturales son el principal agente de movilización y transporte. Los cambios generados por las actividades humanas son más bruscos que los provocados por los ciclos naturales y en el caso de los elementos traza, su baja abundancia los hace especialmente sensibles a estas variaciones. En las aguas naturales del Uruguay en el correr de los años se ha dado un aumento de la concentración de elementos traza debido a factores antropogénicos. Para realizar un análisis completo del comportamiento de los elementos, a los efectos de su gestión, debe sumarse al monitoreo de las concentraciones totales, el conocimiento de las especies químicas predominantes del o los elementos de interés en las condiciones fisicoquímicas de la matriz en estudio. Por ello, no alcanza con conocer los valores de las concentraciones totales de estos elementos en cada muestra, sino también qué especies forman y con qué elementos o compuestos interaccionan para determinar su movilidad, en la medida que ambos factores son decisivos para determinar su biodisponibilidad y para detectar en forma temprana situaciones de desbalance, y aplicar técnicas de gestión apropiadas. Entre los elementos traza se seleccionó al Mo como elemento de estudio para esta tesis. Es de relevancia biológica y ambiental y su movilidad en la corteza terrestre depende en gran parte del ciclo hidrológico. Forma parte de diversos procesos bioquímicos, pero también es potencialmente tóxico. En las aguas superficiales y subterráneas poco profundas forma predominantemente aniones que podrían interaccionar con los cationes más abundantes. Estas reacciones de Mo han sido poco estudiadas en las condiciones de las aguas naturales. Este elemento se encuentra en niveles muy bajos de concentración, por lo que se requiere para su determinación analítica de una técnica muy sensible como ICP-MS. Al no estar fácilmente disponible en nuestro medio, el presente trabajo representó un desafío analítico importante que involucró el desarrollo de una metodología con preconcentración para la determinación de la concentración de Mo en muestras de aguas naturales por espectrometría de absorción atómica electrotérmica (ETAAS). Luego de evaluar las diferentes técnicas de preconcentración se optó por la microextracción dispersiva líquido líquido (DLLME). Se desarrolló y validó una metodología de determinación de Mo en agua con preconcentración por DLLME utilizando etilxantato (EX) como ligando para Mo, tetracloruro de carbono como solvente de extracción, acetonitrilo como solvente dispersivo y detección mediante ETAAS. Esta metodología demostró ser muy sensible, rápida, sencilla y amigable con el ambiente al usar volúmenes muy reducidos de solventes. Fue aplicada con éxito en el análisis de diferentes muestras de aguas naturales de diferentes regiones del país, permitiendo Resumen 20 realizar un relevamiento del contenido de este elemento así como también establecer las regiones en las que es posible encontrarlo. Para realizar el análisis de especiación del elemento de interés en las condiciones de las aguas naturales se realizaron las medidas de todas las constantes de equilibrio que determinan la formación de las especies en solución: equilibrios de protonación de los aniones, equilibrios de asociación con cationes y equilibrios de hidrólisis de los cationes si corresponde. Las medidas de las constantes fueron realizadas por medio de titulaciones potenciométricas en condiciones experimentales simuladas de las aguas naturales (20 °C y baja fuerza iónica). Asimismo se realizó el estudio de la variación de las constantes de protonación con la concentración de fuerza iónica según la teoría de interacción específica (SIT), mostrando que existe dependencia de los valores de las constantes de equilibrio con la concentración de la fuerza iónica del medio. Fueron identificados los sistemas y las condiciones en las que se detecta la formación de especies poco solubles (Cu y Cd principalmente) y se realizaron estudios de solubilidad de los molibdatos. Se sintetizaron y caracterizaron dichos sólidos, se determinaron los valores de las constantes de producto de solubilidad (Ks) y se demostró la validez del modelo químico establecido para los sistemas Mo(VI)-Cd y Mo(VI)-Cu que permite predecir la formación de fases sólidas. También se realizó un estudio comparativo de la química en solución acuosa de Mo con otros elementos formadores de aniones como W, As, Se y S. Los resultados de las muestras analizadas por la metodología desarrollada y los datos termodinámicos obtenidos fueron utilizados para evaluar la distribución de especies de Mo en los diferentes sistemas acuáticos de nuestro país. Se realizaron medidas de dureza de todas las muestras con el objetivo de caracterizarlas desde el punto de vista de la fuerza iónica y para evaluar como influye este parámetro en la especiación de Mo. A modo de reflexión final se desea destacar la importancia y el valor del trabajo interdisciplinario, que permitió integrar conocimientos de química analítica y de química en solución acuosa, para realizar el relevamiento del contenido de Mo en aguas de nuestro país así como también un estudio completo de la química de este elemento en las condiciones de las aguas naturales. In the present investigation, the effect of the Mo in the LaNi3,6Co0,7Mn(0.4−x)Al0,3Mox AB5-type hydrogen storage alloys was studied. The alloys structural and microstructural characterizations were performed by means of X-ray diffraction phase analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties were studied through the measurements of discharge capacity, activation process, rate capability and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the electrodes. The replacement of manganese by molybdenum, in the intermediate concentration tested (2% w/w) has a positive effect. This alloy presents the greatest discharge capacity, the closest potential to system equilibrium potential and therefore the lowest overpotentials. This alloy also has the best behavior for high-rate dischargeability and in concordance, the lowest charge transfer resistance. This improvement is thought to be due to an increase in the active area. Molybdenum substitution by chromium in ZrCr1-xNiMox alloys produces the segregation of ZrxNiy phases, ZrCr2 and ZrMo2 Laves phases as it was stated in Part I of this paper. In order to study the contribution of these phases in ZrCr1-xNiMox alloys performance, secondary Zr9Ni11 and Zr7Ni10, together with ZrCr2 and ZrMo2 Laves phases were synthesized and their crystalline structures determined with XRD patterns. Zr7Ni10 exhibits an orthorhombic structure, whereas Zr9Ni11 depicts a tetragonal structure. ZrCr2 presents a hexagonal structure (C14), while ZrMo2 depicts a cubic structure (C15). ZrCr2 shows zero discharge capacities, while ZrMo2 exhibits a first capacity value of 245 mAh g−1. Zr9Ni11 and Zr7Ni10 phases exhibit maximum discharge capacities of 119 and 157 mAh g−1, respectively. Theoretical results show that the hydride stability for ZrCr2 is larger than that for ZrMo2. However, the great hydrogen storage capacity yields a slower desorption kinetics since it requires a considerable de-hydrogenation energy. The opposite effect is observed for the proposed hexagonal structure ZrMo2. The 100% charge of the alloys shows different results for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Zr7Ni10 phase depicts a better performance since the required potentials are lower than −1.05 V. There is a change in the rate determining step (rds) from a chemical recombination of surface hydrogen (Tafel pathway) in Zr7Ni10 to a fast first electron transfer (Volmer step) for Zr9Ni11. Thus, the rds is strongly affected by the type of secondary phase dominant in each sample, being Zr7Ni10 the most favorable. The metabolic alterations associated with the increase in milk production make the transition period critical to the health of dairy cows, usually leading to a higher incidence of disease in periparturient animals. In this manuscript, we describe the use of NMR-based untargeted metabolomics to follow how these changes impact the serum metabolome in a group of 28 transition dairy cows with no initial clinical diseases. Principal component analysis (PCA) of serum 1H NMR data from four weeks before calving to 8 weeks after parturition allowed us to clearly identify four stages during the transition period. Pairwise comparisons using orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and univariate data analysis led to the identification of 18 metabolites that varied significantly through these stages. Species such as acetate, betaine, and creatine are observed early after calving, while other markers of metabolic stress, including acetone, �-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), and choline, accumulate significantly at the height of milk production. Furthermore, marked variations in the levels of lactate, allantoin, alanine, and other amino acids reveal the activation of different gluconeogenic pathways following parturition. Concomitant with a return to homeostasis, a gradual normalization of the serum metabolome occurs 8 weeks after calving. Correlations of metabolite levels with dietary and metabolic adaptations based on animal parity could also be identified. Overall, these results show that NMR-based chemometric methods are ideally suited to monitor manifestations of metabolic diseases throughout the transition period and to assess the impact of nutritional management schemes on the metabolism of dairy cows. The present work shows the results obtained during the first six months of the Pharmacokinetic Monitoring Section in our University Hospital in Uruguay. Plasma concentrations of Carbamazepine |b Phenytoin and Phenobarbital were monitored for the study. Analysis requests forms |b Sampling Instructions and Pharmacokinetics Algorithms are discussed. Results obtained only from plasma levels in ambulatory and hospitalised patients undergoing chronic therapy are analyzed. Michaelis-Menten elimination parameters of Phenytoin could be estimated for our patients (Km=13 mg/l and Vmax=0.4 mg/kg/h). Sex and comedication with Carbamazepine had no effect on the Phenytoin concentrations. On the other hand |b concomitant treatment with Phenytoin and/or Phenobarbital reduced the elimination half-life of Carbamazepine by 50. Phenobarbital has not been the drug of choice in patients undergoing monotherapy treatment. Collection of trough samples (prior to the administration of a dose) was appropriate for therapeutic drug monitoring of these anticonvulsants. Herein, we investigated the mono and dual doped graphene (DDG) systems that can be constructed when 2 carbon atoms are replaced by two 3p dopants: Al, Si, P or S. Although the latter elements have an atomic radius much larger than that of carbon, for most of the systems studied the dopants prefer to interact between themselves instead with the carbon atoms. The exception to this rule was graphene doped with 2 P atoms which favored a para disposition of the dopants. While in some cases like, SiSi, SS and SiP doped graphene the traditional ortho disposition of the dopants is preferred; for other systems like AlS or AlP DDG graphene, only one of the dopants fits in the graphene plane, while the other adopts a bridged structure. The most extreme case is PS DDG, for which the S atom is covalently bonded to P and no direct S-C bonding is observed. Analysis of the formation energies indicated that the use of two dopants is a useful procedure to reduce the formation energies of doped graphenes. HSE calculations showed that addition second dopant to the monodoped graphene systems does not increase the size of the band gaps. On the contrary, in all cases studied the gaps determined for the doped graphenes containing two dopants were smaller than those calculated when just one dopant is present. Morevoer, in some cases the addition of a second dopant restored the semimetallic character of graphene. Thus, care must be taken when it is postulated that a gap is opened by substitutional doping, since the presence and magnitude of the gaps completely depends on the concentration as well as the position of the dopants. The covalent functionalization of graphene with nitrene radicals has been investigated employing first principles calculations. Perfect graphene is very reactive against nitrene radicals and the binding energy per NH group is significantly increased when the nitrene groups are agglomerated. For bilayer graphene, we determined that the presence of a second layer does not affect the reactivity of the upper layer from a thermodynamical stand point. High levels of functionalization are needed to open a band gap in nitrene-modified graphene. At the LDA, GGA, LDA+U and HSE06 levels, we did not observe band gap opening even for the addition of one NH group per 32 carbons. This result is in contrast with a recent experimental study that attributed the band gap opening of epitaxial graphene to the adsorption of one nitrene radical per 53 carbon atoms. The small amount of adsorbed nitrene radicals is also in contrast with our results that predicted a large reactivity. We attribute this discrepancy to the large size of trimethylsilane that inhibited the agglomeration of nitrene radicals. Thus, it is possible to control the number of nitrene groups added just by varying the size of the functional group attached to nitrogen. For small functional groups like NH, it is feasible that the synthesis of 100% functionalized graphene is feasible because the binding energy per NH is duplicated with respect to the isolated addition. The addition of NH groups to graphene is more favorable when the functionalized CC bonds are broken. We investigate, by means of first‐principles density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the possibility of using hexagonal boron‐arsenide (h‐BAs) as an anode material for alkali‐based batteries. We show that the adsorption strength of alkali atoms (Li, Na, and K) on h‐BAs in comparison with graphene and other related materials changes a little as a function of alkali atom concentration. When the separation between alkali atoms and h‐BAs is less than the critical distance of ~5 Å, the adsorption energy abruptly increases showing fast adsorption without an energy barrier. Furthermore, the low energy barriers of 0.322, 0.187, and 0.0.095 eV for Li, Na, and K, respectively, ensure the fast ionic diffusivities for all the three alkali atoms. Additionally, the addition of these alkali atoms transforms the electronic properties of h‐BAs from semiconducting to metallic, resulting in improved electronic conductivities. Most interestingly, the excellent storage capacities of h‐BAs (~626 mAh/g) for alkali atoms make it a material of similar caliber to that of other popular anode materials. Finally, the average open circuit voltages are calculated and found to be in the desired range. In short, h‐BAs possess every quality that is crucial for an anode material and thus it is interesting to see h‐BAs in alkali‐based battery technologies. The first type of complex consists of 1D chains built by a fully deprotonated ligand bridging two lanthanide ions and protonated Hbzlida− ligands connecting three cations. The second type is formed by [Ln2(bzlida)3] bimetallic units in which the ligand has a tridentate NOO coordination mode. This is expanded to a 2D network through carboxylate linkers. Under similar synthetic conditions but including copper acetate in the reaction mixture, a new compound was also obtained and characterized: [Cu(bzlida)2{Er(AcO)(H2O)5}2][Cu(bzlida)2]·6H2O (AcO = acetate). This salt is made up of the [Cu(bzlida)2{Er(AcO)(H2O)5}2]2+ heterotrimetallic complex cation containing an acetato bridge, and the [Cu(bzlida)2]2− anion. The same reaction produces the monomeric [Cu(Hbzlida)2]·4H2O whose structure was also elucidated. Magnetic properties of the Gd(III) derivative were studied and analyzed experimentally and theoretically. The results are compared and discussed with respect to those reported in the literature and a magnetostructural correlation is suggested. (Asteraceae), ‘carqueja', is a medicinal plant native from South America employed as decoction or infusion for the treatment of low to moderate ailments, and included in the Brazilian Pharmacopeia. This plant is also a rich source of essential oil (EO) valuable in the fragrance industry, mainly owing to carquejyl acetate, carquejol and several sesquiterpenic alcohols contributing to its characteristic aroma reminisce of rosewood. In this work, we report the EO composition, morpho-anatomical and histochemical characterization of B. trimera growing wild in Uruguay. 150 compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), 79 of them not previously reported for this species, whose relative proportions varied according the season. Anatomically, the specimens analyzed did not present any leaves nor ribs between the wings. The epidermis presented polygonal cells with straight anticlinal walls, with anisocytic and less frequently anomocytic stomata. Non-glandular (multicellular, unistratified, with a characteristic elongated apex cell) and glandular (multicellular, bistratified, EO positive) trichomes were evidenced. The mesophyll at the wing level was isolateral with a central spongy parenchyma. Schyzogenous ducts with bistratified secretory epithelium (EO and polyphenols positive), were occasionally associated with the endodermis. The perimedullar parenchyma of the cladodes presented polyhedral pyramidal and prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate, according to previous reports.
