Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to digital food marketing. However, research on adolescents’ recall, awareness, and opinions of this type of marketing is still scarce. Accordingly, the present study aimed to conduct an in-depth examination of adolescents’ experiences with digital food marketing. A convenience sample of 209 adolescents was recruited at two private educational institutions and a public health facility in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. Semi-structured group interviews were conducted, recorded in audio and transcribed. The transcripts were analyzed using content analysis based on a deductive-inductive approach. Results showed that participants were highly exposed to digital food marketing, as they all remembered having seen advertisements, with those of fast-food restaurants and food-ordering apps being the most frequently mentioned. According to the adolescents’ accounts, images, colors, music, oversized portions, product novelty, price promotions and celebrities were the most memorable aspects of food advertisements. Participants recognized the effect of advertisements on product awareness and wanting, and, to a lesser extent, on actual purchase and consumption behavior. Factors that were thought to mediate the impact of digital marketing on food choice were also identified. In the final part of the interviews, participants proposed strategies to reduce the effect of digital marketing on their food choices, which included both regulatory approaches to reduce exposure to digital marketing of unhealthy foods and behavior change communication. Together, the current findings provide insights for the development of multifaceted strategies to reduce the effects of digital food marketing on the eating habits of adolescents.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has provided advice on the long-term storage and stability of samples collected in the context of chemical weapons investigations. The information they compiled and reviewed is beneficial to all laboratories that carry out analysis of samples related to chemical warfare agents and is described herein. The preparation of this report was undertaken on request from the OPCW Director-General. The main degradation products for chemicals on the Schedules in the Annex on Chemicals of the Chemical Weapons Convention are tabulated. The expertise of the 25 scientists comprising the SAB, a review of the scientific literature on environmental and biomedical sample analysis, and answers to a questionnaire from chemists of nine OPCW Designated Laboratories, were drawn upon to provide the advice. Ten recommendations to ensure the long-term storage and stability of samples collected in relation to the potential use of chemical weapons were provided and are repeated here for the consideration of all laboratories worldwide.

LaBaCuFeO5+δ (LaBCFO) exhibits an irreversible magnetic behavior below T=68(3) K. The local structure around the Cu and Fe atoms studied by EXAFS reveals distortions in the internal shells of the coordination polyhedra of these atoms. A magnetic model could be satisfactorily refined from neutron powder diffraction data, with a magnetic unit cell with lattice parameters related to the structural constants as , and cM=c/2. This model introduces the existence of randomly distributed magnetic centers in the structure, in agreement with the irreversibility observed by the DC susceptibility measurements. The oxygen disorder including vacancies and the shift in the position of the non-stoichiometric oxygen atoms produced by the imperfect La/Ba replacement in the packing are considered to be key for the magnetic behavior of the LaBCFO.

The interactions were studied by FTIR and DSC of the terminal lactone of annonaceous acetogenins (ACGs) and synthetic analogues, such as THF, with POPC bilayers, as well as the toxic effect produced by these compounds on Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. The aim of this work was to find a relationship between ACG insecticidal properties and the specific sites of interaction with lipid membranes. ACGs interact to different extents with the phosphate of lipid membranes and differences in the antisymmetric stretching of the phosphate groups were found in the presence of water that indicate water loss and further hydrogen bonding.The ACG tested produced more than 70% larval mortality. Rolliniastatin-1 (3) proved to have the most toxic effects (100%) on early larval instars when incorporated in the larval diet at a dose of 100 μg per g of diet. Additionally, it produced a significant decrease in growth rate (GR) and consumption index (CI), and reduced the efficiency with which larvae converted ingested food into biomass (ECI). The destabilization that occurs in the membrane due to dehydration around the phosphate groups caused by interaction with ACGs and their synthetic analogues would account for ACGs’ insecticidal action

The development of resistance by the antibiotics in the Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria over the last twenty years and continuing today has created a need for new antibiotic classes, which may be unaffected by existing bacterial resistance. The oxazolidin-2-ones represent not only a new class with a novel mechanism of action, but also satisfy the requirement for overcoming the resistance mechanisms. Both linezolid and eperozolid, the first chemical candidates, arose from the piperazine subclass, with the first one being chosen further development because of its enhanced pharmacokinetic properties. The main attractive traits of the oxazolidinone series has encouraged further work in the area, and the patent literature reveals that extensive chemical investigation is currently being made. The unexpected early resistance development emphasizes the need for further exploration of features of the oxazolidinone to eliminate these deficiencies. Recently, several changes, involving the C5 side chain as well the N-phenyl heterocyclic ring, give promise for such improvement. Oxazolidinone antibacterial agents comprise also ketolides, derivatives of macrolides, such as erythromycin A, with a newly formed carbamate cycle, with a largely unexplored potential. The oxazolidinone nucleus does not appear only in the structures of antimicrobial drugs, but a number of biological activities are connected with frameworks including the oxazolidinone ring. A partial list of these activities comprises enzyme inhibitors, agonists and antagonists, with a particular citation for a new generation of selective monoamino oxidase inhibitors (befloxatone). The oxazolidinone moiety was found in the structure of few biologically active natural products, such as (-)-cytoxazone and streptazolin. Moreover, in some cases the oxazolidinone ring has been chosen for the preparation of isosteric aza analogues of natural compounds (podophyllotoxin, pilocarpine) that can be more easily synthesised and more hardly inactivated. Finally, the participation of oxazolidinone chiral auxiliaries to several syntheses of natural products must be acknowledged.

Some properties of the decomposition pathways of nitroethane (1) and 2-nitropropane (2) were studied computationally at the B3LYP/6-311+G(3df,2p) level. It was found that the concerted molecular elimination (CME) pathway is the most favourable decomposition channel, but other eventually important mechanistic routes were also investigated. It was found that the CME of HONO in both nitroalkanes proceeds through relatively high barriers, 42.0 kcal mol�1 and 39.2 kcal mol�1 for 1 and 2 respectively. These values agree well with the activation energies predicted by Benson and co-workers on the basis of experimental information. The enthalpies of formation of 1 and 2 were also determined, both applying the G3 model chemistry to the atomisation reactions on the one hand, and the G3 and B3LYP methods to isodesmic reactions involving nitromethane on the other. Supporting evidence was found that the enthalpies of formation calculated in this way for 1, �24.5�1 kcal mol�1, and 2, �34.0�1 kcal mol�1, are indeed accurate enough for practical purposes. The accuracy of the density functional calculations is discussed at the light of the available experimental results.

The crystal and magnetic structures of the perovskite YBaCuFeO5C� have been studied in the temperature range T D 4:2–300 K by powder neutron diffraction. In addition to the antiferromagnetic ordering transition at TN D 442 K, a commensurate–incommensurate magnetic transition is detected at T0N D 190 K. Below this temperature, two sets of satellite peaks surround the .1=2; 1=2; 1=2/ magnetic peak at d � 5:15 A° , collapsing into a single set of satellites below 155 K. Polarization analysis has been performed to confirm the magnetic nature of the .1=2; 1=2; 1=2/� satellites.

Tannins are polyphenolic compounds extensively present in plants and used by food industry as processing aids. Due to the heterogeneity of plant sources, actions involved in food processing and tannin commercial costs can be different. In the last years different approaches aimed at correctly identifying the tannin botanical origin have been developed, in order to satisfy the industry’s request to verify product labels. This work aimed to define the glycosidic simple phenolic profile of a large selection of monovarietal commercial tannins of different origin, using a high-resolution untargeted approach. Using accurate mass, isotopic pattern and MS/MS fragmentation, 167 precursors, 89 as monoglycosylated and 78 as diglycosylated derivatives were tentatively identified in tannins, validating the untargeted approach with 3 custom-synthesized glycosidic precursors. Almost all tannin botanical varieties were shown to be characterised by a specific glycosylated phenolic profile, providing possible tools for tannin classification in the case of glycosylphenol standard availability.

La aplicación de agroquímicos impacta sobre todo el ecosistema. No solo se ven afectados los organismos blanco, sino también poblaciones no objetivo y el ambiente en general. Este impacto es evaluado habitualmente monitoreando por separado suelo, agua, aire y biota. Sin embargo esta información resulta parcial ya que no se tiene una herramienta que sea capaz de integrar y globalizar la información ambiental disponible a partir de la cual sea posible calificar la calidad del ambiente. En este sentido integrador, el presente trabajo de tesis exploró el empleo de la abeja melífera y su colmena como bioindicador de la calidad ambiental de ecosistemas agrícolas, dada su fuerte interacción con el mismo necesaria para su supervivencia (alimentación y reproducción). Se buscó correlacionar los datos químico analíticos de residuos de pesticidas con las observaciones sobre la biología de la colmena para caracterizar la problemática de distintos sistemas productivos donde se emplean agroquímicos, con el objetivo general de contribuir a la evaluación en forma global del efecto que tienen los paquetes tecnológicos utilizados, tanto aisladamente como en conjunto, sobre los ecosistemas en estudio. Se desarrollaron metodologías adecuadas para el análisis multirresiduo en los distintos componentes de la colmena (abejas, cera, miel y polen) de un conjunto de pesticidas que incluyen aquellos empleados en los diferentes sistemas productivos en las zonas donde se encuentren las colmenas. Se realizaron experimentos y monitoreos que involucraron colmenas caracterizadas localizadas en medio de cultivos extensivos típicos de nuestro país, las que fueron luego evaluadas química y biológicamente. Se demostró que los diversos agroecosistemas, los cambios en los mismos y las estaciones del año se pueden diferenciar a través de los perfiles de residuos de pesticidas de cada producto de la colmena. Se mostró mediante un experimento a semi-campo que las abejas efectivamente transfieren residuos de neonicotinoides aplicados en soja al interior de la colmena detectándose los mismos en cera. Se relacionaron las concentraciones de insecticidas presentes en el ambiente con las trazas determinadas en las abejas y se encontró que esta transferencia tiene una relación lineal inversa con su propiedad fisicoquímica Kow, se pudo observar que el pesticida que menos se transfirió (acetamiprid) tiene la presión de 14 vapor más alta. El encontrar relaciones entre la transferencia y las propiedades fisicoquímicas de tiametoxan, imidacloprid y acetamiprid, de cumplirse para un rango mayor de compuestos, permitiría calcular las concentraciones presentes en el ambiente a partir de lo determinado en la colmena. Con los resultados analíticos y biológicos obtenidos se estudió la posibilidad de desarrollar modelos basados en técnicas de aprendizaje automático para la evaluación del riesgo y del impacto ambiental de la utilización de los distintos paquetes tecnológicos para cultivos de extensión como soja, arroz, sorgo, trigo o praderas. Específicamente, se desarrollaron modelos de tipo Support Vector Machines (SVM) utilizando algoritmos implementados en el software libre R para realizar aprendizaje supervisado sobre los datos mencionados explorando el desempeño de distintos subconjuntos de resultados químicos y biológicos como indicadores. Los resultados tienen además relevancia para la actividad apícola, industria incipiente y cada vez más importante en nuestro país. Los insumos químicos, biológicos e informáticos generados en este trabajo de tesis son un aporte al conocimiento y una herramienta para la evaluación de la sustentabilidad de los agroecosistemas del país a través de la implementación de la colmena como un biomonitor.

The influence of insecticides commonly used for agricultural purposes on beehive depopulation in Uruguay was investigated. Honeycombs, bees, honey and propolis from depopulated hives were analyzed for pesticide residues, whereas from active beehives only honey and propolis were evaluated. A total of 37 samples were analyzed, representing 14,800 beehives. In depopulated beehives only imidacloprid and fipronil were detected and in active beehives endosulfan, coumaphos, cypermethrin, ethion and chlorpyrifos were found. Coumaphos was present in the highest concentrations, around 1,000 μg/kg, in all the propolis samples from active beehives. Regarding depopulated beehives, the mean levels of imidacloprid found in honeycomb (377 μg/kg, Standard Deviation: 118) and propolis (60 μg/kg, Standard Deviation: 57) are higher than those described to produce bee disorientation and fipronil levels detected in bees (150 and 170 μg/kg) are toxic per se. The other insecticides found can affect the global fitness of the bees causing weakness and a decrease in their overall productivity. These preliminary results suggest that bees exposed to pesticides or its residues can lead them in different ways to the beehive.

The validation of an analytical procedure for the determination of pesticide residues in beeswax, an interesting matrix for environmental pollution monitoring, is presented. Using the QuEChERS template, the impacts of wax particle size, sample amount, and cleanup procedure (water addition, dispersive solid phase extraction, freeze-out, and combinations thereof) on extraction yield and coextractive load were studied. Sample preparation through liquid-liquid partitioning between acetonitrile and melted wax (∼80 °C), followed by freeze-out and primary-secondary amine dispersive cleanup, was performed on incurred and pesticide-free samples for 51 residues. Determinations were made through LC-MS/MS and GC×GC-TOF, and the whole procedure was validated. Matrix effects were evaluated, with recoveries between 70 and 120% and RSDs below 20% in almost all cases. LC-MS/MS LOQs ranged from 0.01 to 0.1 mg/kg for most pesticides, but for GC-amenable pesticides, GC×GC-TOF sensitivity was lower (0.1-0.2 mg/kg). This methodology can be applied for routine analysis of pesticide residues in beeswax.

Different extraction procedures and clean-up methods were compared in order to develop a sample preparation<br />procedure for the multi-residue analysis of six post-emergence herbicides (metsulfuron methyl, bensulfuron<br />methyl, pyrazosulfuron ethyl, bentazone, bispyribac sodium and cyhalofop butyl) in rice grains followed by<br />liquid chromatography-diode array detection (LC-DAD). Optimum results were obtained dispersing milled rice<br />grain in water, followed by the addition of 1% acetic acid in acetonitrile, MgSO4 and sodium acetate as a<br />modification of the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) method but no primary and<br />secondary amine (PSA) sorbent was added due to the acidic nature of the herbicides. The method was further<br />expanded to other post-emergence herbicides (quinclorac, clomazone and propanil). Except for quinclorac, which<br />cannot be analysed with this method, the recoveries of the other eight herbicides were in the range 73–111%, with<br />relative standard deviations lower than 12%. Limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.03 to 0.08mg kg�1.<br />A single analyst can extract twelve samples in 4 h. The method presented here allows the simultaneous residue<br />determination of the most common post-emergence herbicides employed in cultivating rice. It is simple, rapid,<br />sensitive, and can be applied routinely to polished rice grain herbicide residue analysis.

Two simple and straightforward sample preparation methods were developed for the multiresidue analysis of post-emergence herbicides in loam soil that are commonly used in rice crop cultivation. A number of strategic soil extraction and cleanup methods were evaluated. The instrumental analysis was performed by HPLC with a diode array detector. The best compromise between the recoveries (69–98%) and good repeatability (RSD <15%) was obtained using either methanol or methanol–ethyl acetate (70 + 30, v/v) as extraction solvents without any further cleanup. For the first time, residues of metsulfuron methyl, bensulfuron ethyl, bentazone, cyhalofop butyl, pyrazosulfuron ethyl, propanil, and clomazone were analyzed simultaneously. Quinclorac and bispyribac sodium were also assayed, but their recoveries were below 50%. Both methods had an LOD of 0.7 mg/kg and could accurately determine the residues at the 2 mg/kg level. These two methods could not be applied directly to other soil types as the recoveries strongly depended on the soil composition. The developed methodologies were successfully applied in monitoring 87 real-world soil samples, in which only propanil (6 to 12 mg/kg) and clomazone (15 to 20 mg/kg) residues could be detected.

Microwave Assisted Extraction and a modified CEN-QuEChERS methodology were evaluated as extraction and clean up procedures for the simultaneous analysis of 42 organophosphate pesticides in yerba mate (Ilex paraguaiensis). The obtained extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography using a flame photometric detector. Linearity, recovery percentages, relative standard deviations, detection and quantification limits and matrix effects were determined according to DG-SANCO guidelines for both methods. At 0.2 and 0.5 mg/kg the evaluated methods showed percentages recoveries between 70 and 120% for most of the analytes. Using Microwave Assisted Extraction methodology, 33 pesticide residues could be properly analyzed whereas only 27 could be determined with the proposed modified QuEChERS. All relative standard deviation were below 18% except for omethoate and disulfoton sulfone when evaluated by the modified QuEChERS. The limits of detection in both methodologies were 0.2 mg/kg for most of the analyzed compounds. The average detection limit for QuEChERS was 0.04 mg/kg. For 19 of the analytes determined through Microwave Assisted Extraction the lowest validated level were 0.004 mg/kg. Signal suppression/enhancement was observed for most of the pesticides, thus matrix-matched calibration curves were used for quantification. The Microwave Assisted Extraction and QuEChERS procedures studied could detect the organophosphate pesticides above the MRL fixed for “mate” by the European Union. They have been successfully applied for the determination of organophosphate pesticide residues in commercial samples and the positives were confirmed through GC–(ITD)-MS.

The beehive as a quantitative monitor of pesticide residues applied over a soybean crop was studied through a semi field experiment of controlled exposure of honey bees to pesticides in macro tunnels. The distribution within exposed beehives of pesticides commonly used in soybean plantation, was assessed. Residue levels of insecticides in soybean leaves, honey bees, wax, honey and pollen were analyzed. The transference from pesticides present in the environment into the beehive was evidenced. The obtained results allow relating pesticide concentrations present in the environment with traces found in foraging bees. Therefore, pesticide transference ratios could be calculated for each detected compound (acetamiprid, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam) which showed a linear inverse trend with their 1-octanol/water partition coefficient (Kow). The least transferred pesticide to the hive (acetamiprid) has the highest vapor pressure (Vp). This study gives new insights on the usefulness of monitoring the environment through beehives aiming to evaluate if agroecosystems remain sustainable. It also contributes to generate valuable information for model building aiming to predict environmental quality through beehive's analysis.

Bees are widely recognized as biomonitors of the environment. However, simple, low cost indicators based on bee activities (other than mortality) that can be used to monitor agroecosystems' environmental status have not been reported yet. Biological and chemical indicators were evaluated using Support Vector Machine (SVM) models. The objective was to classify environments into the categories of affected and non (or minimally) affected by pesticides presence. SVM models based on simple population and brood area estimations provided 57% accuracy in classifications. Models based on variables constructed using chemical analysis results (the number of pesticides detected in each sample; the total sum of toxic units, related to bees and mammals; and the sum of field Environmental Impact Quotient, EIQ, of each detected pesticide) provided 100% accuracy in classifications. This fact can be used to obtain biological indicators from a wide number of sites and apply the SVM model to indicate risky seasons and ecosystems where further chemical indicators should be studied. As the input variables are totally explicit and can be changed or updated, the approach followed in this study using SVM provides a stable basis to improve the development of indicators for agricultural production systems biomonitoring. A summary of the resource.
The field-gathered pollen collected by honey bees, named corbicular pollen, is a source of information from the beehive’s environment. Palynological analysis of pollen collected by honey bees offers details on the amounts and types of botanical resources they visited. Pollen can be contaminated due to agricultural practices, which can be useful as a source of information of the type and amount of pollutants honey bees bring to the hive. In the present work, palynological and pesticide residue analyses were performed in 27 samples of corbicular pollen from 8 apiaries located in different agroecosystems from Uruguay. Most of the pollen in each sample, except one, came from non-cultivated and native flora species, independently from the apiaries location: 43 botanical resources were identified but only 12 of them corresponded to cultivated plants. Pesticide residues analysis was targeted to 33 compounds and performed by chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry techniques, using validated protocols. Different loads and types of pesticides were detected in the different agroecosystems: 72 pesticide residues corresponding to 13 active substances in a concentration range from 0.4 to 90 µg kg-1 . The Pollen Hazard Quotient (PHQ) was calculated in order to rank pesticides and agroecosystems according to honey bee risk-based criteria. The combination of palynological studies of each sample coupled to the determination of its pesticide loads´, permitted to pose questions about the different possible origins of the exposure of honey bees to pesticides.

A pilot annual monitoring survey (April 2018–March 2019) was conducted to investigate the presence of pesticides in superficial water and fish in Laguna del Cisne, one of the most critical drinking water sources in Uruguay. A total of 25 pesticide residues were detected in superficial water (89.3 % of the samples). Pesticide's temporal distribution was as sociated with crops and livestock practices, with higher occurrences in spring and summer than in autumn and winter. The most frequent compounds in superficial water were the insecticide chlorantraniliprole, and the herbicides glyph osate (including its metabolite AMPA) and metolachlor. The levels of Organochlorine pesticide, p,p′-DDT, was in some cases two order of magnitude above the international water quality guidelines for Ambient Water Criteria. In fishes, eight different pesticides were detected, at concentrations from 1000 to 453,000 ng·kg−1 . The most frequent pesticides found were propiconazole, chlorpyrifos, and p,p′-DDE. The widespread occurrence of pesticides in fish suggests poten tial exposure effects on fish populations and the aquatic ecosystem. The sampling approach of this work allowed mon itoring the continuous concentrations of several pesticides in surface waters and fishes to establish the influence from past and current agriculture practices in Laguna del Cisne basin. For safety measures, continuous monitoring programs must be performed in this system to prevent toxicity impacts on aquatic organisms and human health.
