Tambo Colorado is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Southern Peruvian coast, because of its stunning architecture, its extraordinary pictorial decoration, and its strategic location in the section of the Great Inca Road. The Research Project Tambo Colorado considers necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis encompassing nature of the materials (archaeometric analysis) as well as a proper understanding of their conservation status of its architecture. In this regard interdisciplinary research provides the necessary tools to achieve these goals. For this reason our team is integrated by archaeometrists, engineers, conservators and archaeologists. Due to of this transdisciplinary approach, one of the main objective is the study of painting technology developed by the craftsmen of the site. The first results obtained, thanks to an analytical strategy combining observation and elemental and structural analysis (colorimetry, SEM-EDS, XRF, XRD and SXRD), allow us to identify the coloring materials used. These data enabled to reconstruct the operational chain followed to elaborate the murals (since the pigments extraction to the making of the murals) but also to consider and develop a suitable surfaces conservation plan. Introducción: la apolipoproteína B100 defectuosa familiar, debida a la mutación R3500Q en el gen de la apolipoproteí - na B es una causa conocida de hipercolesterolemia familiar heterocigota. Su frecuencia varía entre 1:500 y 1:700 en dis - tintas poblaciones europeas. Se dispone de escasa información referente a su frecuencia en Uruguay y América Latina. Casos clínicos: en este trabajo se describe el hallazgo, realizado por vez primera en Uruguay, de dos pacientes con hi - percolesterolemia familiar dominante con la presencia de la mutación R3500Q de la proteína ApoB. Para su hallazgo, se analizó un grupo de pacientes (n=96) de la Comisión Honoraria para la Salud Cardiovascular (CHSCV), con criterios clí - nicos y bioquímicos de hipercolesterolemia familiar heterocigota. Se realizó estudio molecular para la mutación R3500Q mediante la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa y posterior digestión con enzimas de restricción. Conclusiones : hemos encontrado dos primeros casos de HFh con una genética que explica su fenotipo debido a la muta - ción R3500Q en el gen ApoB. Por medio de esta estrategia, mostramos que el análisis genético ayuda a la estratificación de pacientes en riesgo, permite el diagnóstico familiar y constituiría el primer paso en el algoritmo diagnóstico etiológico de las hipercolesterolemias dominantes

UaY is the specific ZnII2Cys6 transcriptional activator of the purine utilisation pathway in Aspergillus nidulans. Previous work has determined the consensus binding sequence by EMSA and foot-printing. We determine here that it binds as a dimer to its cognate CGG-N6-CCG sites. We identify the uaY109 mutation, which has been shown to affect differentially the expression of a number of UaY-regulated genes, as a F112I substitution in the DNA-binding motif dimerisation domain. We isolated back mutants, revertants carrying different residues at the same position (I112N and I112M) and intragenic suppressors mapping in the first loop of the Zn cluster (N75T and N75K).We have analysed the original mutant and its revertants by growth tests and by their effects on the mRNA steady states of five UaY-regulated genes. We have determined the effect of the different mutations on UaY dimerisation, on the apparent Kdiss of the UaY DNA-binding domain to appropriate DNA sequences and on the methylation interference pattern. We have attempted to rationalise these phenotypes by modelling the UaY DNA binding domain on the structure of the highly similar Ppr1p. However, modelling of the wild-type and mutant proteins provides only a partial explanation for the observed phenotypes. This suggests that the mutated residues may have other roles besides the obvious ones inferred from their position in the sequence and by the similarity of UaY and Ppr1p

La larva del parasito Echinococcus granulosus tiene forma de quiste y se aloja en 6rganos intemos de algunos marniferos. Este quiste posee caracteristicas que 10 hacen potencialrnente activador de la respuesta inflamatoria. Sin embargo, en hospederos a los que el parasito esta bien adaptado, la inflamaci6n inicial se resuelve y la larva completa su desarrollo. El control de la inflamación por el parasito debe ser un proceso multifactorial, que regule las diferentes vias por las que la inflamación se inicia y mantiene. Entre estas se encuentra el sistema complemento (C), un conjunto de proteinas plasmaticas y de superficie celular, que se activa sobre superficies no propias para desencadenar una serie de efectos biol6gicos, entre ellos, la inducci6n de inflamaci6n. Los antecedentes sobre el C y E. granulosus indican que, durante el desarrollo de la forma infectante a quiste, la superficie expuesta al hospedero se transforma en no activadora del C. La pared del quiste (PQH) constituye la interfase con el hospedero, y su inercia frente al C radica, en gran medida, en las propiedades de su capa mas extema, la capa laminar (CL). Esta es una estructura acelular, rica en glucidos, que se visualiza a nivel ultraestructural como una mall a de fibras sobre las que se disponen granulos de tamaiio definido, densos a los electrones. Los granulos se forman en las celulas de la PQH y son exocitados hacia la CL. La búsqueda de mecanismos de control de la activación del C por la PQH habia conducido a la detecci6n de una actividad que interferia con una de las vias de activación del sistema, la via altema (VA). El objetivo central de este trabajo fue la caracterización de esta actividad, a traves de la identificación del (de los) componente(s) responsable(s) y de la elucidación del mecanismo de inhibici6n. El componente activo se purificó a partir de un extracto de PQH mediante metodos cromatograficos y, utilizando diferentes tecnicas analiticas, se identificó como myo-inositol hexakisfosfato (IP6). Esta molecula, ubicua en los eucariotas y de función desconocida, habia sido descrita como exclusivamente intracelular. Sin embargo, se demostr6 que E. granulosus secreta al medio extracelular grandes cantidades de IP6 insolubilizado con calcio, dando lugar asi al elemento granular de la CL. La acumulaci6n de IP6 calcico ocurre Unicamente en la interfase con el hospedero y es una caracteristica no compartida con otra especie de su genero, E. multilocularis. Los resultados sugieren que el IP6 en la CL no esta relacionado al control de la activación del C por la PQH. Pese a esto, en forma insoluble y en presencia de Ni++, el compuesto bloquea diferentes eventos de la activación de la VA, a traves de la interacción con uno de sus componentes, el factor B. Los resultados del trabajo aportan información valiosa a la biologia, tanto del parasito, como de la propia molécula. No se ha establecido el papel del IP6 en la CL; los experimentos futuros deberan esc1arecer si el IP6 cumple una función meramente estructural, 0 esta involucrado en la relación con el hospedero.

myo-Inositol hexakisphosphate (IP(6)) is an abundant intracellular component of animal cells. In this study we describe the presence of extracellular IP(6) in the hydatid cyst wall (HCW) of the larval stage of the cestode parasite Echinococcus granulosus. The HCW comprises an inner cellular layer and an outer, acellular (laminated) layer up to 2 mm in thickness that protects the parasite from host immune cells. A compound, subsequently identified as IP(6), was detected in and purified from an HCW extract on the basis of its capacity to inhibit complement activation. The identification of the isolated compound was carried out by a combination of NMR, MS and TLC. The majority of IP(6) in the HCW was found in the acellular layer, with only a small fraction of the compound being extracted from cells. In the laminated layer, IP(6) was present in association with calcium, and accounted for up to 15% of the total dry mass of the HCW. IP(6) was not detected in any other structures or stages of the parasite. Our results imply that IP(6) is secreted by the larval stage of the parasite in a polarized fashion towards the interface with the host. This is the first report of the secretion of IP(6), and the possible implications beyond the biology of E. granulosus are discussed.<br /><br />

myo-inositol phosphates are an important group of biomolecules that are present in the eukaryotic cells. The most abundant member of this family in nature is InsP6, usually called phytate. The importance of the interaction of InsP6 with cations has been recognized during the last years, and any attempt to know the function of this molecule in eukaryotic cells must include the fact that phytate will be strongly associated with simple inorganic and organic ammonium cations in solution. On the other hand, slightly soluble salts play an important role in phosphorous storage in plant kingdom and organophosphates found in soils. This review compiles the efforts during the last ten years to quantify and understand the interaction of InsP6 with different cations, either in solution or in the formation of solid phases. A coordination chemistry’s view is used to describe the interaction of this versatile ligand with cations and organic amines, and how they can determine the self-assembly process in the formation of polynuclear complexes and solid phases

A summary of the resource.
The capability of adsorption of different electroactive cationic Re(V)–amine complexes onto myoglobin-containing electrodes has been investigated. The goal of this work was the development of an Au/thiol/myo electrode and, after incubation of such ensemble in the presence of three different Re(V)–amine complexes, the evaluation of the extent of surface coverage by the complexes (as a way to evaluate the interaction complex-protein) using electrochemical techniques. Our results showed that a protein-containing electrode could therefore be used for the detection of the interaction of small electroactive cationic complexes and the biomolecule. The extent of the coverage of the myoglobin electrode by the complex depends on the number of free tails from the ligands and the total charge of the complex

Looking for single molecule electronic devices, we have investigated the charge transport properties of individual tetra-phenylporphyrin molecules on different substrates by ultrahigh-vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and by first-principles calculations. The tetra-phenylporphyrins with a Co atom (Co-TPP) or 2 hydrogens (H2-TPP) in the central macrocycle when deposited on Cu3Au(100) substrates showed a diode-like behavior with p and n type character, respectively. After removing the central hydrogens of H2-TPP molecule with the STM tip an ohmic behavior was measured. The rectifying effect was understood from the theoretical point of view by assuming for Co-TPP HOMO conduction and for H2-TPP LUMO conduction, both selectively elected by the hybridization of states between molecule and substrate surface.

A summary of the resource.
Although N-acetylaspartylglutamate (NAAG) is one of the neuropeptides found in highest concentrations in the mammalian central nervous system, its functional role in neuronal signaling has not been definitively established. In some neuronal populations, NAAG is concentrated in nerve terminals and thus, it may play a role in the cytoplasmic events underlying neurotransmitter exocytosis. In the present study we have validated the use of the synthetic derivative NAAG-acetoxymethyl triester (NAAG.AM) as a tool to increase the intracellular levels of the peptide and assessed the ability of NAAG to regulate [3H]-dopamine ([3H]-DA) secretion in PC12 cells. Enzymatic degradation of NAAG.AM by nonspecific brain esterases resulted in the progressive formation of NAAG and succinimidyl-NAAG (Asu-NAAG). However, only 8% of NAAG.AM was converted to NAAG. Significant amounts of NAAG (1 nmol/mg protein) were demonstrable in cultures of the neuroblastoma cell line N2A following incubation with NAAG.AM for 2 h, with the concentration of (Asu)-NAAG being at least 100-fold higher. The pheochromocytoma cell line PC12 was used to assess the influence of loaded NAAG derivatives on [3H]-DA exocytosis. Incubation with 0.1-1 mM NAAG.AM did not affect the basal efflux or total content of [3H]-DA. However, it induced a dose-dependent decrease of [3H]-DA secretion in response to 56 mM KCl depolarization reaching an inhibition of 49% with 1 mM NAAG.AM. In contrast, NAAG.AM did not affect secretion induced by the calcium ionophore A23187 (100 microM). The present study validates the use of NAAG.AM as a tool to load NAAG derivatives into intact cells and provides preliminary evidence for an intracellular role of the peptide.

There are three basic steps to activated carbon fibers (ACF) manufacturing, from PAN fiber: oxidation/stabilization, carbonization and activation. Carbon material, specially ACF is a very attractive material to be used as supercapacitor electrode. The literature describes carbon material surface chemistry importance for supercapacitors application, mainly nitrogen groups by N-doping. Oxidation/stabilization is an important non-explored factor that influence the surface chemical functionality. This work describes the influence of oxidation/stabilization process on ACF production, from textile PAN fiber, and the non-doping nitrogen surface chemistry characteristic caused by the oxidation process design. Its textural, structural and surface was evaluated for supercapacitor electrode. The results show that the oxidation degree can be used as a mechanism of textural and surface chemistry control. The surface chemistry is the key of this work, different oxidation conditions can produce nitrogen compounds that help to increase specific capacitance. The tests showed an increase in capacitance higher than 100% in comparison to the standard oxidation.

N-Oxide-containing compounds have been developed as prodrugs that are selectively bioactivated in the hypoxic cells in tumors. This selectivity is based on the net reduction of the N-oxide moiety in the absence of oxygen, in a one or two-electron process, by reductive enzymes. A wide range of N-oxides have been studied and some of them are currently in clinical use. This review covers the principal families of compounds under study and in clinical trials.

A summary of the resource.
Chagas disease represents a relevant health problem in Central and South America. The first line of treatment is Nifurtimox and Benznidazole which have a great deal of disadvantages that demands the rapid generation of therapeutic alternatives. Based in our research on aza-thiaheterocycles as anti-Trypanosoma cruzi agents we identified pharmacophores that act through oxidative stress. Here, we describe the synthesis and the activity of new containing bioactive-heterocycles analogues of naftifine as potential T. cruzi membrane sterol biosynthesis inhibitors. Benzimidazole 1,3-dioxides (11 and 13) and quinoxaline 1,4-dioxides (22 and 23) displayed excellent parasite/mammal selectivity indexes. Analysis of the free sterols from parasite incubated with the compounds showed that any of them are able to accumulate squalene suggesting that in the anti-T. cruzi mechanism of action is not involved the inhibition of sterol biosynthesis. Some derivatives were also tested as antifungal agents. The results obtained in the present work open potential therapeutic possibilities of new compounds for these infectious diseases.

Resumen El objetivo de este Doctorado fue estudiar la nucleación heterogénea, coalescencia y obtención del compuesto laminar BiI3 a escala nano, así como la incidencia de esta última escala en las propiedades físicas y en las aplicaciones tecnológicas de los materiales obtenidos. Se eligió el BiI3 porque se tenía experiencia luego de haber realizado una Maestría en el tema, por ser detector de radiación X –su aplicación más directa-, y por ser un compuesto laminar, lo que hizo pensar que sus planos podrían curvarse y formar nanotubos o nanorods. Para ello se plantearon dos caminos: uno de ellos fue sintetizar las nanopartículas para luego tomarlas como material de partida en futuras nucleaciones, por ejemplo por deposición física de vapor. Este camino fue el que se desarrolló más ampliamente en este Doctorado. El otro camino fue partir de material micrométrico y por deposición física de vapor lograr nucleaciones nanométricas utilizando vacíos mayores y temperaturas menores que las realizadas en trabajos anteriores. Si bien se participó en el desarrollo de un equipo para llevar a cabo estos estudios, no fue posible profundizar en estos aspectos en el transcurso del Doctorado. Para sintetizar nanopartículas de BiI3 se estudiaron tres métodos: solución, hidrotérmico y microondas. En solución se lograron obtener nanopartículas de BiI3 con morfologías y tamaños variados. Las partículas más pequeñas sintetizadas por este método tuvieron un tamaño promedio de 20 nm. También se vio que dicha morfología depende de la temperatura de síntesis. Se observó además cómo estas partículas coalescen cuando incide sobre ellas el haz de electrones del microscopio electrónico de transmisión (TEM). Realizando síntesis en microondas no se obtuvo BiI3. Por el método hidrotérmico se estudió la incidencia del tiempo de síntesis en el tamaño de las partículas, y se encontró que no depende de éste en las condiciones utilizadas. Por el método hidrotérmico se sintetizó BiI3 pero también mezclas de BiI3 y BSI. Se lograron encontrar las condiciones de síntesis adecuadas para obtener solamente BiI3, como ser productos de partida, solvente y temperatura. Se lograron obtener nanopartículas de un tamaño promedio de 20 nm, con morfología hexagonal. Se observó además que las partículas sintetizadas se modifican y dan lugar a otras de diferente morfología al incidir sobre ellas el haz de electrones del TEM. Se realizaron estudios por espectroscopía UV-Vis e infrarrojo medio de las nanopartículas sintetizadas por los métodos de solución e hidrotérmico. Las nanopartículas de BiI3 obtenidas se utilizaron como producto de partida para realizar nucleaciones por deposición física de vapor (PVD). Se obtuvieron nucleaciones con partículas de un tamaño promedio de 100 nm, pero muy separadas entre ellas. También se realizaron nucleaciones suspendiendo las partículas en diferentes solventes, se depositaron sobre sustratos de vidrio por el método de spin coating, y a las mejores nucleaciones se les realizó annealing. Además, las nanopartículas se utilizaron como producto de partida para crecer films por PVD

Zika virus has spread around the world with rapid pace in the last five years. Although symptoms are typically mild and unspecific, Zika’s major impact occurs during pregnancy, generating a congenital syndrome. Serology plays a key role in its diagnosis. However, its use is limited due to the uncertainty caused by the cross-reaction of antibodies elicited in response to other flavivirus infections when tested in direct immunoassays. Using a panel of previously generated anti-Zika non-structural protein 1 (NS1) nanobodies, a set was selected that only recognizes epitopes present in Zika and is immunogenic to humans. A proper arrangement of these nanobodies was made and conditions were optimized in order to develop a novel serology assay. This new ELISA relies on the inhibition of the binding of a set of selected nanobodies to Zika-immobilized NS1 when previously incubated with Zika convalescent sera. Using the developed blocking of binding assay, it was possible to discriminate between Zika-specific and cross-reactive antibodies in serum samples from infections with Zika and other flaviviruses

Abstract

Valero-fenbendazole (VAL-FBZ) is a novel hybrid compound with in vitro anthelmintic activity, designed and synthesized to address the global problem of resistance to anthelmintic compounds. This new molecule derives from fenbendazole (FBZ), a wellknown commercially available benzimidazole used in veterinary medicine despite its poor water solubility. In this work, we report for the first time a strategy to solve the solubility problems of FBZ and VAL-FBZ by means of self-dispersible nanocrystals (SDNC). Nanocrystals were prepared by media milling followed by a spray-drying step, and a comprehensive and exhaustive structural and physicochemical characterization was carried out, in order to understand the systems and their behavior. The formulation poloxamer 188 (P188):FBZ 1:1 turned out with the best process yield (53%) and re-dispersability properties, particle size average of 258 nm, and polydispersity index of 0.2 after redispersion in water. The dissolution profile showed a markedly increased dissolution rate compared with the simple mixture of the components (80% FBZ dissolved in 15 min from the SDNC vs 14% from the control formulation). FTIR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) studies showed no chemical interactions between components and an extensive confocal Raman microscopy analysis of the formulations showed very homogeneous spatial distribution of components in the SDNC samples. This manufacturing process was then successfully transferred for preparing and characterizing VAL-FBZ:P188 (1:1) SDNC with similar results, suggesting the promising interest of a novel anthelmintic with improved biopharmaceutical behavior. In conclusion, new FBZ and VAL-FBZ SDNC with improved dissolution rate were successfully prepared and characterized

Sin embargo, cabe señalar que dichas capacidades están en permanente crecimiento desde su instalación, en el 2008, lo que permite el abordaje de nuevos emprendimientos.</p>

The development of sensitive and easy-to-use biosensors that allow an adequate characterization of specific weak biological interactions like carbohydrate–lectin interactions still remains challenging today. Nanoparticles functionalized with carbohydrates are one of the most powerful systems for studying carbohydrate–lectin interactions, because they mimic the multivalent presentation of carbohydrates encountered in nature, for example when viruses and bacteria bind to cells. On the basis of the model system glucose–Concanavalin A (ConA), we explore the application of Transient Magnetic Birefringence (TMB) to study these weak interactions, using glucose-functionalized colloidal magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) as probes. We demonstrate that the binding dynamics can be monitored and derive a model to obtain the apparent cooperativity. For our studies, we use nanoparticles of 6 and 8 nm in diameter. The ConA-generated response shows apparent cooperativity, due to the cross-linking of nanoparticles by the ConA tetramer which has four binding sites. Cooperativity is higher for 6 nm NPs, possibly due to a better accessibility of all four ConA binding sites on smaller NPs, enhancing cross-linking. For this system, we find a detection limit of 3–23 nM.

There is a great demand for rapid tests that can be used on-site for the detection of small analytes, such as pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, explosives, toxins, medicinal and abused drugs, hormones, etc. Dipsticks and lateral flow devices, which are simple and provide a visual readout, may be the answer, but the available technology for these compounds requires a competitive format that loses sensitivity and produces readings inversely proportional to the analyte concentration, which is counterintuitive and may lead to potential misinterpretation of the result. In this work, proteinmultipeptide constructs composed of anti-immunocomplex peptides selected from phage libraries and streptavidin/avidin as core protein were used for direct detection of small compounds in a noncompetitive two-site immunoassay format that performs with increased sensitivity and positive readout. These constructs that we termed “nanopeptamers” allow the development of rapid point-of-use tests with a positive visual end point of easy interpretation. As proof of concept, lateral flow assays for the herbicides molinate and clomazone were developed and their performance was characterized with field samples.

<p>La nanotecnología (NT) es una rama de la tecnología en la que se realizan procesos con la materia a una escala nanométrica. Un nanometro o nanómetro es la millonésima parte de un milímetro. Dicho de esta manera, es muy difícil aquilatar la dimensión de referencia, la que da origen al mismo nombre de esta tecnología.<br />Se podría agregar que casi se ingresa en la zona del tamaño de los propios átomos, pero si bien esta aclaración suena a algo muy pequeño, probablemente no sea suficiente para darse cuenta de la real magnitud de lo que hablamos. Sin embargo, todos tenemos una noción de la pequeñez de las células, que se definen como la menor unidad de los organismos vivos y<br />que todos entendemos como algo muy pequeño. A las células las entendemos como parte de nosotros, pero también hablamos de gérmenes y contagios o infecciones, técnicamente provocadas por bacterias, que son en sí mismas seres vivos unicelulares. <p>En este capítulo presentaremos de manera general aplicaciones<br />que la nanotecnología puede ofrecer, tanto desde el punto de vista de procesos como también de los diversos productos basados en esta nueva tecnología que actualmente se comercializan. Posteriormente discutiremos con mayor profundidad las oportunidades que ofrece el uso de la energía<br />solar, en particular las ventajas del uso de la nanotecnología. De esta forma mostraremos cómo esta nueva revolución tecnológica permite ir más allá de lo que se había pensado: generar nuevos productos, presentar variantes en<br />productos ya existentes, generar nuevos procesos, hacer viables procesos que antes no lo eran, y todo esto cuidando el ambiente.<br />La nanotecnología (NT) consiste en la creación de materiales<br />funcionales, dispositivos y sistemas a través de la manipulación de la materia a escala nanométrica. Un nanomaterial para ser catalogado como tal debe poseer en al menos una de sus dimensiones una longitud inferior a los 100 nanómetros (nm). Pero la nanotecnología también incluye la explotación de<br />las propiedades y los fenómenos ocurrentes a esa escala (Los Alamos National Laboratory, s/f), ya que son notoriamente diferentes a los esperados para los materiales en su forma convencional.</p>

<strong>Narrow bore post column derivatisation assays via reaction flow chromatography</strong>
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This study highlights the capability to conduct a post column derivatisation (PCD) process with a narrow bore, low volume column. A reaction flow (RF) HPLC column (30 mm × 2.1 mm internal diameter (i.d.), 3 μm particle diameter) enabled the selective detection of phenols for both a simple standard mixture and a complex sample represented by green tea. The resolving power and sensitivity obtained were similar to an analytical scale (4.6 mm i.d.) RF HPLC column of the same format. However, the baseline noise experienced was higher when the assay was scaled down from the RF 4.6 mm i.d. to the RF 2.1 mm i.d. narrow bore column. The PCD mixing and reaction speed inside the RF column outlet (frit and head-fitting design) enabled the coupling of PCD protocols with “UHPLC-type” low volume columns and systems without significant loss in separation performance. In comparison to a conventional analytical scale PCD approach the scaled down narrow bore RF approach demonstrated 40 times greater sensitivity in terms of S/N. Scaled down PCD is vital for decreased consumption and cost without significant loss in separation performance.

tAntibodies are key immune players in several helminth infections and animal models have been centralfor the identification of their mechanisms of protection. Murine secondary cystic echinococcosis is auseful model for studying Echinococcus granulosus immunobiology, being the immune profile mountedby the experimental host a determinant of parasite success or failure in infection establishment. In thepresent study, we analyzed infection outcome using Balb/c and C57Bl/6 mice strains, and compared theirantibody responses in terms of quality and intensity. Our results showed that Balb/c is a highly susceptiblestrain to secondary cystic echinococcosis, while C57Bl/6 mice are quite resistant. Moreover, significantdifferences between strains were observed in natural and induced antibodies recognizing E. granulosusantigens, both at the systemic and peritoneal levels. Natural cross-reacting IgM, IgG2b and IgG3 antibodieswere detected in sera from both strains but with different intensities, and – remarkably – natural IgG2bshowed to be an intrinsic correlate of protection in both mice strains. Interestingly, naïve C57Bl/6 serumdisplayed a higher protoscolicidal activity, and heterologous – but not homologous – transference ofC57Bl/6 naïve serum into Balb/c mice, significantly reduced their infection susceptibility. In the peritonealcavity, different levels of natural cross-reacting IgM and IgG3 antibodies were detected in both micestrains, while cross-reacting IgG2b was detected only in C57Bl/6 mice. On the other hand, infected micefrom both strains developed isotype-mixed antibody responses, with Balb/c mice biasing their responsetowards high avidity IgG1 and C57Bl/6 mice showing a predominance of mixed IgM/IgG2c/IgG2b/IgG3.In this regard, IgG1 levels showed to be a correlate of susceptibility in both mice strains. In conclusion,our results suggest that antibodies – either natural or induced – play a role in the susceptibility degreeto murine secondary cystic echinococcosis.
