Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In order to gain inside the mechanism of action of a series of benzo[1,2-c]1,2,5-oxadiazole N-oxide derivatives with in vitro anti-trypanosomal activity, electrochemical and biological studies were performed. Cyclic voltammetry and electron spin resonance spectroscopy were used to predict the bio-reduction processes. Effects on the parasitic respiration were studied.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of radicals obtained from two analogues of the antiprotozoal drug nifurtimox by electrolytic and Trypanosoma cruzi reduction were analyzed. The electrochemistry of these compounds was studied using cyclic voltammetry. STO 3-21G ab initio and INDO molecular orbital calculations were performed to obtain the optimized geometries and spin distribution, respectively. The antioxidant effect of glutathione on the nitroheterocycle radical was evaluated. DMPO spin trapping was used to investigate the possible formation of free radicals in the trypanosome microsomal system. Nitro1 and Nitro2 nitrofuran analogues showed better antiparasitic activity than nifurtimox. Nitro2 produced oxygen redox cycling in T. cruzi epimastigotes. The ESR signal intensities were consistent with the trapping of either the hydroxyl radical or the Nitro2 analogue radicals. These results are in agreement with the biological observation that Nitro2 showed anti-Chagas activity by an oxidative stress mechanism.

The electrochemistry of these compounds was studied in DMSO, DMF and ACN using cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The EPR of radicals obtained by electrolytic reduction of some new analogues of the antiprotozoal drug nifurtimox were measured in DMSO and DMF. The electrochemistry of these compounds was studied using cyclic voltammetry AM1 and INDO semiempirical molecular orbital calculations were performed to obtain the optimized geometries and spin distribution, respectively. Density functional theory was used to rationalize the reduction potentials of these compounds.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Development of new antimicrobial compounds against different microorganisms is becoming critically important, as infectious diseases are still one of the leading causes of death in the world. The pharmaceutical industry is searching for new lead compounds with novel chemical structures to overcome the increasing resistance to known antibiotics. Plants can be a useful source of these lead compounds. Xanthium cavanillesii Schouw, Asteraceae, grows wild in Uruguay and its infusion is used in traditional medicine as a skin antiseptic. We have previously reported studies on the antimicrobial activity of several extracts of X. cavanillesii against different microorganisms. In this work, we present the isolation and structural elucidation by spectroscopical methods of a sesquiterpene lactone with a new xanthanolide derived skeleton.

A pesar de los grandes avances en la quimioterapia de las enfermedades infecciosas estas están lejos de ser controladas y más aún erradicadas y son aún una de las principales causas de muerte en el mundo. Esto se debe, entre otros motivos, a la falta de una terapéutica adecuada, tanto sea por la falta de fármacos efectivos (para infecciones fúngicas o virales) como a la rápida aparición de resistencia que vuelve inefectivas las drogas existentes. Los agentes infecciosos resistentes, o sea aquellos que no son destruidos o inhibidos por los compuestos antimicrobianos son una creciente causa de preocupación en los organismos de salud pública. La tuberculosis, la gonorrea, la malaria y las otitis infecciosas en niños pequeños son sólo algunas de las enfermedades que se han convertido en difíciles de tratar debido a la aparición de cepas resistentes y multiresistentes (NIAID, 1998; Fauci & Marston, 2014). Esto ha llevado a numerosas iniciativas para desarrollar programas colaborativos para enfrentar la situación como el programa ESKAPE. Los microorganismos ESKAPE, Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, y varias especies de Enterobacter son los patógenos que en la actualidad causan la mayoría de las infecciones hospitalarias de Estados Unidos y de manera efectiva "se escapan" de los efectos de los fármacos antibacterianos. Datos de los Centros para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) muestran un rápido aumento de las tasas de infección debido a Staphylococcus aureus meticilino resistente (MRSA) , E. faecium resistente a la vancomicina (VRE) y P. aeruginosa resistentes a las fluoroquinolonas. Las opciones terapéuticas para estos patógenos son extremadamente limitadas de forma que en la clínica obliga a utilizar los medicamentos más antiguos, que antes se descartaban , como la colistina, que están asociados con toxicidad importante y para los que existe una falta de datos sólidos para orientar la selección de régimen de dosificación o la duración de la terapia. El creciente número de pacientes de edad avanzada y los pacientes sometidos a cirugía , el trasplante y la quimioterapia y los aumentos dramáticos en la población en unidades de cuidados intensivos neonatales Estudio de Metabolitos Secundarios Antibacterianos de la Flora Medicinal Nativa 2 producen un mayor número de individuos inmunocomprometidos con riesgo de estas infecciones (Boucher et al., 2009). Staphylococcus aureus es un patógeno comunitario y nocosomial importante. Este organismo es causante de una considerable preocupación debido a su gran habilidad de adquirir resistencia hacia los nuevos antibacterianos que alcanzan el mercado. Esta bacteria Gram positiva coloniza la piel en aproximadamente el 40 % de la gente sana. Es una de las bacterias más difíciles de tratar en pacientes y de erradicar del ambiente del hospital. Es particularmente preocupante la velocidad con que la bacteria genera nuevas resistencias. El problema de la resistencia demanda un renovado esfuerzo en la búsqueda de agentes antibacterianos efectivos contra bacterias patógenas resistentes a los actuales antibióticos. Las plantas superiores han demostrado ser una fuente importante de nuevos compuestos bioactivos, tanto por presentar actividad farmacológica per se, como por representar nuevos tipos moleculares para el desarrollo de drogas, incluyendo antihipertensivos, analgésicos, citotóxicos y antiinflamatorios. Esto incluye compuestos que son medicamentos de primera elección o incluso los únicos existentes para el tratamiento de éstas afecciones. Ejemplos son la vincristina y vinblastina, alcaloides aislados de C.roseus utilizados clínicamente para el tratamiento de varios tipos de linfomas y leucemias, el taxol extraído de T.baccata (Clarck, 1996; Cowan, 1999). El enfoque etnofarmacológico es un proceso alternativo utilizado para la selección de material para el desarrollo de fármacos y comprende trabajo de campo etnobotánico y etnomédico. Este enfoque combinado involucra el estudio de plantas utilizadas en la medicina folclórica y popular. En las décadas pasadas la etnobotánica médica se ha desarrollado y evolucionado hacia una nueva disciplina que incluye el trabajo en colaboración de diferentes áreas del conocimiento (Cox, 1990, Cox & Balick, 1994).

<p>Passiflora caerulea L. (Passifloraceae) (“mburucuyá”, “maracujá-laranja”), a widely distributed species in South America, has been traditionally considered as a medicinal, ornamental, and edible plant. Its fruits, besides being well<br />appreciated for their flavor and sweetness, have valuable nutritional properties. The ethnopharmacological use as anxiolytic, antistress and sedative of the non-reproductive<br />aerial parts (leaves and tendrils) from P. caerulea is the main reason for its commercialization as an infusion herb. In general, its preparations are rich in flavonoids (chrysin and C-glycosides such as vitexin, isovitexin, orientin, isoorientin, and vicenin-2, among others), which were confirmed as responsible for the anxiolytic effect. The Argentine Pharmacopeia includes a monograph on P. caerulea, while other Pharmacopeias (Brazilian, European, and British) consider it as a potential<br />adulterant of P. incarnata and P. edulis. Harmala alkaloids from P. caerulea might also contribute to the anxiolytic effect, but no preclinical assays have been conducted to confirm it. Pharmacological research confirmed other bioactivities associated with the aerial parts of P. caerulea, such as antimicrobial, gastroprotective, analgesic, and anticonvulsant. Even though, no systematic toxicological assessments have been conducted in order to evaluate the safety in the consumption, especially regarding the presence of cyanogenic glycosides both in the vegetal drug and the unripe fruits.</p>

Reducing the sugar content of processed products has been claimed to be one of the most efficient strategies for decreasing sugar intake. The present work aimed at studying the influence of sugar reduction on the dynamic sensory profile and consumers' liking of probiotic chocolate-flavored milks using a novel temporal methodology, and to evaluate two alternatives (vanilla flavor and thaumatin) to attenuate the sensory changes caused by sugar reduction. Probiotic chocolate-flavored milks were formulated with different reductions in added sugar (0, 20, 40 and 60%). Vanilla flavor and thaumatin were added to the sugar-reduced samples at two concentrations. Samples were evaluated by trained assessors using Temporal check-all-that-apply (TCATA). Additionally, consumers evaluated the dynamic sensory profile of a subset of the samples using TCATA and indicated their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale. Results from the present work showed that the main effect of sugar reduction on the dynamic sensory profile of the probiotic chocolate-flavored milks was related to changes in sweetness, bitterness and thickness. A reduction in added sugar of 20% led to changes in sweetness intensity, which were perceived by both trained assessors and consumers. However, consumers' liking was not significantly affected by sugar reduction up to 40%. The addition of vanilla flavor at suprathreshold concentrations was not efficient in increasing sweetness perception in chocolate-flavored milks with the lowest sugar reduction percentage, suggesting that it may not be a feasible alternative for reducing sugar in this product category. These results suggest that in many situations sugar content of food products could be decreased without a relevant impact on consumers' sensory and hedonic perception.

Reducing the concentration of added sugar in processed foods is one of the most realistic strategies to reduce the intake of this nutrient in the short-term. In order to be effective, gradual sugar reduction strategies need to determine the maximum sugar reduction that can be unnoticed by consumers. In this context, the present work aimed at providing recommendations for gradual sugar reduction in chocolate-flavoured milk by determining difference thresholds for added sugar and evaluating consumers' sensory and hedonic perception of reduced-sugar products. Five studies were conducted with 50 consumers to determine five sequential difference thresholds. In each study consumers completed six paired-comparison tests. Each pair was composed of a reference chocolate-flavoured milk and a sample that was reduced in added sugar from the reference. Difference thresholds, corresponding to the smallest reduction in sugar concentration that is noticed by consumers, were determined using survival analysis. Then, a study was carried to with 100 consumers to evaluate their sensory and hedonic perception of chocolate-flavoured milk samples with different added sugar concentrations. Results suggested that sequential sugar reductions can be set at 6.7% without affecting consumers' sensory and hedonic perception. Sugar reduction in chocolate-flavoured milk without affecting consumers' perception seems feasible and easy to implement. The approach of the present work could be extended to design recommendations for gradual reduction of the added sugar concentration of other industrialized products, contributing to the development of more healthful products that meet current nutritional recommendations.

The aim of the present work was to screen probiotic cultures for the development of non-fermented probiotic milk that keeps its sensory, microbiological and physicochemical characteristics during storage. The study was conducted in three steps. Initially, five probiotic cultures (Bifidobacterium animalis, B. longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei, and L. rhamnosus) were screened using sensory, microbiological and physicochemical techniques. Two cultures were selected for a more detailed evaluation based on their ability to maintain viability during storage without altering the sensory characteristics of the product: L. acidophilus and B. animalis. The milk with L. acidophilus showed a better sensory performance throughout storage. Finally, the shelf life of the probiotic milk obtained with L. acidophilus culture was estimated in 21.8 days from a sensory and microbiological point of view. L. acidophilus culture could be used by dairy companies as an innovative option to add health functionality to regular milk without any major change in its sensory characteristics.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of the regular and probiotic version of two milk products on consumer overall liking and perceived wellbeing. In Study 1, consumers evaluated milk samples with different label design. In Study 2, consumers evaluated samples of chocolate flavored milk differing in sugar content and nutrition information. In both studies, consumers rated their overall liking and completed a check-all-thatapply question composed of expressions related to different dimensions of wellbeing. Overall liking scores were significantly affected by the sensory characteristics of samples but not by the characteristics of the labels. In Study 2, the highest average overall liking scores were found for samples with high sugar content (6.2 vs. 6.0). The frequency with which consumers used some of the wellbeing terms was influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic variables. In Study 1, the term “It is nutritious” was significantly more used to described probiotic milk compared to regular milk. In Study 2, sugar content and the information included on the labels influenced the frequency of use of terms related to physical and psychological wellbeing, such as “It is good for wellbeing” and “It makes me feel guilty.” Practical applications Although hedonic aspects of food consumption are major determinants of consumer food choices, results from the present work showed that consumer perceived wellbeing enabled the discrimination of samples that did not significantly differ in their overall liking scores. This suggests that wellbeing measurements can provide complementary information about consumer perception of food products to overall liking scores.

Sugar sweetened beverages are one of the main sources of added sugar in the diet. Therefore, sugar reduction in these products could contribute to the prevention of various negative health conditions, such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In this context, the present work aimed to study consumer sensory and hedonic perception towards sugar reduction in fruit nectars. Five sequential difference thresholds for added sugar in three fruit nectars (passion fruit, orange/passion fruit and orange/pomegranate) were determined based on consumer perception. In each test, difference thresholds were estimated using survival analysis based on the responses of 50 consumers to six paired-comparison tests. Each pair was composed of two samples, a control nectar and a sample that was reduced in added sugar from the control. Consumers were asked to try each of the samples in each pair and to indicate which was sweeter. Then, consumers' sensory and hedonic perception of nectar samples was evaluated for each nectar using a 9-point hedonic scale and a check-all-that-apply question. Difference thresholds were estimated in 4.20%–8.14% of the added sugar concentration of the nectars. No significant differences in overall liking were detected for fruit nectars with 20% sugar reduction. However, large heterogeneity in consumer hedonic reaction towards sugar reduction was found, which should be taken into account in the design of sugar reduction programs. Consumer hedonic reaction towards sugar reduction was product dependent. Results from the present work reinforce the idea that gradual sugar reduction in sugar sweetened beverages is a feasible strategy that could contribute to reduce the sugar intake of the population.

Oxyfluoride glass and glass‐ceramics are being studied due to the possibility of their utilization in many applications, such as thermoluminescent dosimeters, optical fibers, fluorescent concentrators, and temperature sensors. In order to improve the properties of glass, they are often crystallized. For this crystallization to be effective, knowledge and control of the structure of the starting material is required. Much work was done on silicate glass; however, a great interest exists in obtaining these kinds of materials in other matrices such as germanates, phosphates, and borates. Here, we present a structural study of some oxyfluoride borate glass with different concentrations of PbF2 by means of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Raman, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies. We also analyzed glass‐crystallization using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The crystallization study was complemented with the use of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED), for the purpose of identifying possible mechanisms of crystallization. Our results indicate, from the structural point of view, that the glass present groups with one or two BO4 species, such as diborate or pentaborate. The small variation in the BO4 fraction with the increase in PbF2 concentration would be an indication of the formation of F−BO3/2 species. Oxyfluoride borate glass containing BaO as a cation modifier and 30% PbF2 represents a good starting point for obtaining glass‐ceramics with a narrow size distribution of BaF2 nanocrystals. We also propose that the possible mechanism for oxyfluoride borate glass crystallization started with a separation of phases.

Pyrolysis techniques provide an interesting way of recycling plastic wastes (PW) by transforming them into liquid fuels with high calorific values. Catalysts are employed in PW pyrolysis in order to favor cracking reactions; in that regard, cheap and abundant natural resources are being investigated as potential catalyst precursors. This article explores the pyrolysis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in a semibatch reactor under a reduced pressure of 300 torr and temperatures in the range of 370 �C–430 �C. Three different solid materials, an activated carbon (AC1), a commercial Fluid cracking catalyst (FCC) and an aluminum- pillared clay (Al-PILC), were tested as catalysts for the pyrolysis process. Thermogravimetric analyzes were previously performed to select the most catalytically active materials. AC1 displayed very low catalytic activity while FCC and Al-PILC displayed high activity and conversion to liquid products. Hydrocarbons ranging from C5 to C28 were identified in the liquid products as well as significant changes in their composition when FCC and Al-PILC catalyst were used. Differences in the catalytic activity of the 3 solid materials are ascribed mainly to differences in their acid properties
