Bismuth tri-iodide is a layered compound semiconductor which has suitable properties as material for ionizing radiation detection devices. Monocrystals and polycrystalline thin films have been studied for this application, but only recently, the development of nanostructures of this compound has emerged as an interesting alternative for using such nanostructures in new types of radiation detectors or for including them in other applications. Considering this, we present in this work BiI<sub>3</sub> nanoparticles successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method, using a Teflon-lined stainless steel autoclave, at a temperature of 180 °C during 8–20 h, with BiCl<sub>3</sub> and NaI as source materials. We characterized the nanoparticles by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). We obtained small rounded or hexagonal particles (10–20 nm in size) and larger structures. The maximum orientation of the nanostructures is along the <em>(0 0 l)</em> family planes and occurs after 16 h of synthesis, which arises as the best condition for obtaining BiI<sub>3</sub> oriented nanostructures. When a 100 kV TEM electron beam was converged on the larger structures, we obtained highly oriented BiI<sub>3</sub> hexagonal and rod shaped nanostructures. We found that particles’ shape does not depend on the synthesis time. In addition, results were compared with the ones obtained for nanoparticles synthesized from solution. The present work is an advance in the synthesis of BiI<sub>3</sub> nanostructures by the hydrothermal method, and is also the first step on seeking the amenable control of morphology and size of such structures using electron beam irradiation. This last process may be particularly appropriate for producing nanostructures for future applications in new devices.

<p>In the search of antimicrobial agents a novel bisthiazole ligand containing a methylamine linker (ethyl 2-((2-methylthiazole-4-yl)methylamino)thiazole-4-carboxylate (BTa) and its copper(II) complex [CuCl2BTa]⋅2H2O were synthetized. Both compounds were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods. Single crystal Xray diffraction of copper complex evidence a pentacoordinated copper(II) center of intermediate geometry<br />forming 5 and 7 membered chelate rings with BTa acting as a tridentate ligand leaving the amine N–H group in the thiazole linker available for participation in intermolecular interactions. Structure packing was analyzed by means of Hirshfeld surfaces, 2D fingerprint plots and lattice interaction energies were assessed. In order to deepen the understanding of the coordination to the flexible ligand DFT studies were carried out at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of theory. Calculated FTIR frequencies were used to perform a Vibrational Energy Distribution Analysis (VEDA) where potential energy distribution of vibrational was determined. Minimum inhibitory concentrations for BTa and CuBTa on E. coli ATCC 25922, S. aureus ATCC 25923, P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 and C. albicans ATCC 10231 were determined.</p>

A summary of the resource.
This paper reveals the structural, electronic and mechanical properties of a novel inorganic graphenylene based on indium nitride (IGP-InN). The IGP-InN was characterized via density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The phonon dispersion shows the dynamic stability of IGP-InN, and molecular dynamics simulations confirm its thermal stability up to 700 K. Besides the electronic properties, the indirect band gap transition with energy (Egap) of 2.49 eV makes IGP-InN suitable for optoelectronic applications under UV–visible. Also, the Egap tunability with mechanical strain was analyzed, with a decrease of 1.19 eV in the Egap for tensile strains. The structural buckling plays an important role, with a transition to a planar structure for tensile strains. This work reveals a new class of 2D materials, buckled inorganic graphenylenes, and provides valuable insights into designing and optimizing graphenylene-like materials.

A facile and short chemoenzymatic synthesis of (−) 1L-5-amino-5-deoxy-allo-inositol hexaacetate is described using benzyl azide as starting material. The key transformations consist of an enzymatic dioxygenation using the toluene dioxygenase enzymatic complex, followed by an allylic azide double sigmatropic [3,3] shift to introduce the nitrogen functionality in the ring in a stereoselective manner. Azide reduction and further regioselective oxidation of the diene moiety afforded the desired inosamine in only eight steps from benzyl azide.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The synthesis of eight novel Zn(II), Co (II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Pt(II) complexes (2–9) derived from the ONNO tetradentate coumarin Schiff-Base donor ligands, L1 and the novel L2, was performed. All compounds were characterized by analytical, spectrometry and spectroscopy techniques. Complexes 2–4 were also characterized by DFT calculations and the structures of 5 and 6 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. A cytotoxicity study was carried out through an MTT assay in the carcinogenic cell line HeLa and the noncarcinogenic cell lines HFF-1 and HaCaT. The results indicated that among all the evaluated compounds, 2 and 6 presented the best anticarcinogenic potential against HeLa cells with an IC50 of 3.5 and 4.1 μM, respectively. In addition, classical molecular dynamics simulations were performed on the synthesized coordination compounds bound to G4 DNA architectures in the scope of shedding light on their inhibition mode and the most conserved interactions that may lead to the biological activity of the compounds.

The current therapeutic arsenal against the kinetoplastids Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania spp. is clearly inadequate and underscores the urgent need to develop new effective, safe and cost-effective drugs. Areas covered: Accordingly, this review of patented products and processes using anti-kinetoplastid agents provides insight into the identification of novel or more refined drugs. In this review, we describe products developed in recent years for the treatment of human African trypanosomiasis, American trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis from a medicinal chemical perspective. Expert opinion: Applications so far have looked only superficially for candidate anti-trypanosomatid drugs and are deficient in the final stages of drug development studies, i.e., tolerance/safety, selectivity, drug-resistance, scaling-up, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic assays. The ultimate goal for production of agents with anti-HAT activity has been the development of dicationic agents with parasite DNA-binding activity. Another goal for control of human African trypanosomiasis as well as for Chagas disease and leishmaniasis is the development of protease inhibitors. It should also be noted that several recent studies describing promising targets and compounds have not yet been patented. An effort should be made by foundations, international health organizations and pharmaceutical corporations to support analysis and development of promising new chemotherapeutic agents for controlling the trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis.

As an effort to develop novel selective hypoxia-cytotoxins and to improve bioavailability and pharmacological and toxicological properties of quinoxaline N1,N4-dioxide derivatives (L1 = 3-amino-6(7)-chloroquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N1,N4-dioxide, L2 = 3-amino-6(7)- bromoquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N1,N4-dioxide and L3 = 3-amino-6(7)-methylquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N1,N4-dioxide) and to get a synergism among metals and these type of bioreductive agents, L2 and three novel Cu(II) complexes of general formulae [CuII(H2O)x(L – H)2], where L = L1 (x = 1), L2 (x = 0) or L3 (x = 2) were developed. L2 and complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental and thermal analyses, and FTIR, electronic, MS, NMR, and EPR spectroscopies. The new compounds were subjected to cytotoxic evaluation in V79 cells in hypoxic and aerobic conditions. The complexes showed excellent selective cytotoxicity in hypoxia, being their cytotoxicity similar to or higher than that of the ligands L1–L3. Besides, the copper complexes were so poorly cytotoxic in oxia as the free ligands. In addition, for the first time Cu(II)-quinoxaline complexes are reported as a family of hypoxic cytotoxins.

<p>The first synthesis of two selenyldeoxycyclitols (4-bromo-2-phenylselenyl conduritol F and 6-phenylselenylconduritol F) is reported via a chemoenzymatic enantioselective route. The key step of the synthesis is the selenolysis of a vinyl epoxide. The new compounds were evaluated for their capacity to inhibit the growth of different microorganisms using a modification of the agar diffusion technique with thin layer chromatography plates as support.</p>

Abstract

Fluoride in drinking water has beneficial or harmful health effects depending on its concentration. This highlights the need for new low-cost and portable sensors capable of in situ monitoring of F− ions. Unfortunately, achieving high levels of water compatibility and fluoride specificity remains a challenge. Here, four new urea-based discrete sensors are prepared and characterized. The sensors containing anthracenyl- (5) and 9H-fluorenyl- (7) signaling units exhibit intense luminescent emissions in dimethyl sulfoxide, the former being particularly sensitive and selective to fluoride. In water, 5 displays a superior sensitivity (871 M−1) and a detection limit (8 μm) below international guidelines, albeit with cross-sensitivity to H2PO4‾. To enhance the performance, 5 and 7 are embedded into a fluoride-imprinted polymeric matrix to give solid-state sensors (5P and 7P, respectively). 5P shows good sensitivity (360 M−1) and specificity in water. Besides, it has a low detection limit (35 μm) and a response linear range (118–6300 μm) encompassing the limit established by the Environmental Protection Agency (211 μm). Furthermore, 5P also displays good reusability and adequate recovery values in real-sample testing (102 ± 2%), constituting the first example of a low-cost anion-imprinted polymeric probe tailored for the selective sensing of fluoride in aqueous samples.

Polyamides-based compounds related to the Streptomycetal distamycin and netropsin are potent cytostatic molecules that bind to AT-rich regions of the minor groove of the DNA, hence interfering with DNA replication and transcription. Recently, derivatives belonging to this scaffold have been reported to halt the proliferation of deadly African trypanosomes by different and unrelated mechanisms. Here we describe the synthesis and preliminary characterization of the anti-trypanosomal mode of action of new potent and selective distamycin analogues. Two tri-heterocyclic derivatives containing a central N-methyl pyrrole ring (16 and 17) displayed high activity (EC50 < 20 nM) and selectivity (selectivity index >5000 with respect to mammalian macrophages) against the infective form of T. brucei. Both compounds caused cell cycle arrest by blocking the replication of the mitochondrial DNA but without affecting its integrity. This mode of action clearly differs from that reported for classical minor groove binder (MGB) drugs, which induce the degradation of the mitochondrial DNA. In line with this, in vitro assays suggest that 16 and 17 have a comparatively lower affinity for different template DNAs than the MGB drug diminazene. Therapeutic efficacy studies and stability assays suggest that the pharmacological properties of the hits should be optimized. The compounds can be rated as excellent scaffolds for the design of highly potent and selective anti-T. brucei agents.

In this report, we study the effect of the addition of fluorine-free 2,2′-bis(4,5-dimethylimidazole) (BDI) on lithium-ion solid polymer electrolytes based on lithium nitrate and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Confocal Raman spectroscopy and theoretical Raman calculations were performed to study lithium dissociation and the interaction mechanism of the lithium and nitrate ions with the BDI additive. Additionally, X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the mean coherence length of the PMMA chains is influenced by the BDI concentration. The incorporation of the BDI additive favors the dissociation of lithium salt leading to a maximum enhancement on the lithium conductivity of up to 1.88 × 10−4 S cm−1 for a critical BDI addition of ∼5% with respect to PMMA, which is very high in comparison with the conductivities of ∼10−4 S cm−1 usually observed for these solid polymer electrolytes.

A summary of the resource.
Ascreening of 15 fungi and yeast strains was carried out in fermentation processes to perform the diastereoand enantioselective reduction of ethyl 2-methyl-3-oxobutanoate, to the corresponding (R*,S*)-3-hydroxy- 2-methyl esters. Overall, biotransformations led to excellent conversions, as well as good to excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities. A strain of Aureobasidium pullulans (CCM H1) was found to be the most efficient biocatalyst in terms of conversion (100%), syn:anti ratio (3:97), and enantiomeric excess (94% anti- (2S,3S) isomer). This biotransformation was successfully carried out on a preparative level as well. Other microorganisms, such as Fusarium graminearum (CCM HH 224), Aspergillus terreus (BFQU 121), Geotrichum candidum (CCM H38), Trichoderma koningii (ATCC 76666), and Aspergillus niger (CCM H21) also showed excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities, combined with high conversions (>95% conversion, P95% ee, and excellent syn:anti ratios). Many of the strains used in this work had scarcely been described as oxido-reducing agents, or had never been used with the substrates reported herein.

Highly reactive carbon/Fe composites were prepared from tar used as a carbon source, and hematite (�-Fe2O3), a widespread naturally available iron oxide. Tar was impregnated on hematite and thermally treated under N2 atmosphere. Mössbauer, powder X-ray diffraction and magnetization data suggested that treatment at 400 and 600 ◦C produced only magnetite (Fe3O4) whereas at 800 ◦C mainlymetallic iron (Fe0) was produced. Raman, TG and XRD analyses of the different composites revealed the presence of amorphous and graphitic carbon highly dispersed on the iron oxide surface. The composites obtained at 800 ◦Cwere very efficient in reducing aqueous Cr(VI), as CrO4 2−, even compared to finely ground commercial Fe0. XPS and Mössbauer data showed that after five consecutive reuses, the composites deactivated, due to the surface oxidation of Fe0. A simple treatment at 800 ◦C completely regenerated the composite by reducing Fe3+ species allowing several reuses

A new family of imidazo[4,5-c][1,2,6]thiadiazine 2,2-dioxide with antiproliferative Trypanosoma cruzi properties was identified from a neural network model published by our group. The synthesis and evaluation of this new class of trypanocidal agents are described. These compounds inhibit the growth of Trypanosoma cruzi, comparable with benznidazole or nifurtimox. In vitro assays were performed to study their effects on the growth of the epimastigote form of the Tulahuen 2 strain, as well as the epimastigote and amastigote forms of CL clone B5 of Trypanosoma cruzi. To verify selectivity towards parasite cells, the non-specific cytotoxicity of the most relevant compounds was studied in mammalian cells, i.e. J774 murine macrophages and NCTC clone 929 fibroblasts. Furthermore, these compounds were assayed regarding the inhibition of cruzipain. In vivo studies revealed that one of the compounds, 19, showed interesting trypanocidal activity, and could be a very promising candidate for the treatment of Chagas disease.

<p>In the last decades, significant efforts have been dedicated to the search for novel vaccine adjuvants. Inthis regard, saponins and its formulations as “immunostimulating complexes” (ISCOMs) have shown to becapable of stimulating potent humoral and cellular immune responses, enhanced cytokine production andactivation of cytotoxic T cells. The immunological activity of ISCOMs formulated with a saponin fractionextracted from Quillaja brasiliensis (QB-90 fraction) as an alternative to classical ISCOMs based on Quil A®(IQA) is presented here. The ISCOMs prepared with QB-90, named IQB-90, typically consist of 40–50 nm,spherical, cage-like particles, built up by QB-90, cholesterol, phospholipids and antigen (ovalbumin, OVA).These nanoparticles were efficiently uptaken in vitro by murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells.Subcutaneously inoculated IQB-90 induced strong serum antibody responses encompassing specific IgG1and IgG2a, robust DTH reactions, significant T cell proliferation and increases in Th1 (IFN-� and IL-2)cytokine responses. Intranasally delivered IQB-90 elicited serum IgG and IgG1, and mucosal IgA responsesat distal systemic sites (nasal passages, large intestine and vaginal lumen). These results indicate that IQB-90 is a promising alternative to classic ISCOMs as vaccine adjuvants, capable of enhancing humoral andcellular immunity to levels comparable to those induced by ISCOMs manufactured with Quillaja saponariasaponins.</p>

The kinetic resolution of racemic 1H,3H-thiazolo[3,4-a]benzimidazoline (TBIM) heterocycles was achieved using E. coli whole cells expressing the MAO-N D11 enzyme. Several cosolvents were screened using TBIM 2a as the substrate. DMF was the best cosolvent, affording the pure enantiomer (+)-2a in 44% yield, 94% ee. The stereochemistry of TBIM was predicted by means of ab initio calculations of optical rotation and circular dichroism spectra. The reaction scope was investigated for 11 substituted (±) TBIM using an optimized protocol. The best yield and % ee were obtained for the nonsubstituted 2a. Among the substituted compounds, the 5-substituted-TBIM showed better % ee than the 4-substituted one. The small electron donor group (Me) led to better % ee than the electron-withdrawing groups (−NO2 and −CO2Et), and the bulky naphthyl group was detrimental for the kinetic resolution. Docking experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to further understand the interactions between MAO-N D11 and the thiazolo-benzimidazoline substrates. For 2a, the MD showed favorable positioning and binding energy for both enantiomers, thus suggesting that this kinetic resolution is influenced not only by the active site but also by the entry tunnel. This work constitutes the first report of the enzymatic kinetic resolution applied to TBIM heterocycles.

A new family of lanthanide complexes with open-framework structures has been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The structure of the polymers with general formula [Ln(Hida)3] · xH2O (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb; H2ida = iminodiacetic acid) presents large hexagonal channels with more than 11 Ǻ diameter, and houses the crystallization water molecules. These molecules can be reversibly removed upon heating. This is the first example of this kind of structure with ida as bridging ligand.

Our research group has made incursions into the scarcely known coordination chemistry of rhenium(II). The literature shows that Re(II) mononuclear complexes are attractive in molecular magnetism due to high magnetic anisotropy because of a significant spin-orbit coupling, making them a potential source for new molecule-based magnets. In this work, we present the preparation of four novel Re(II) compounds of general formula NBu4 [Re(NO)Br4 (L)] [NBu4 + = tetra-n-butylammonium: L = imidazole (1), pyrazole (2), 1,2,4-triazole (3) and 1H-tetrazole (4)]. The four compounds were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and cryomagnetic measurements in the temperature range of 1.8–300 K. Their crystal structures consist of mononuclear [Re(NO)Br4 (L)]− complex anions and NBu4 + cations. Each Re(II) ion is six-coordinate with a linear nitrosyl group and one monodentate nitrogen-donor (L), which are trans-positioned, plus four bromide groups, building a tetragonally distorted octahedral surrounding. The inter-anionic contacts were thoroughly analyzed using Hirshfeld surface analyses (plots over the dnorm, shape index, and 2D fingerprints). Cryomagnetic measurements show that these complexes behave as quasi-magnetically isolated spin doublets with weak antiferromagnetic interactions at low temperatures. The magnetic behavior of Re(II) was modeled by the influence of the ligand field, tetragonal distortion, spin-orbit coupling, and covalence effects. In addition, the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling was correlated to the nature of the intermolecular interactions.

Phenazine 5,10-dioxides (PDOs) are a new class of bioreductive cytotoxins, which could act towards tumours containing hypoxic regions. The PDOs selective-hypoxic bioreduction was probed in vitro; however, the mechanism of action has not been completely explained. Besides, PDOs in vivo antitumour activities have not been demonstrated hitherto. We study the mechanism of hypoxic/normoxic cytotoxicity of PDO representative members. Electron spin resonance is used to confirm •OH production, alkaline comet assay to determine genotoxicity, and gel electrophoresis and flow cytometry to analyze DNA fragmentation and cell cycle distribution. Chemically induced rat breast tumours are employed to evaluate in vivo activities. For the most selective cytotoxin, 7(8)-bromo-2-hydroxyphenazine 5,10-dioxide (PDO1), exclusive hypoxic •OH production is evidenced, while for the unselective ones, •OH is produced in both conditions (normoxia and simulated hypoxia). In normoxia (Caco-2 cells), PDO1 induces cell-cycle arrest and DNA fragmentation but does not significantly induce apoptosis neither at IC50 nor IC80. No difference in the comet-assay scores are observed in normoxia and simulated hypoxia being the unselective 2-amino-7(8)-bromophenazine 5,10-dioxide (PDO2) the most genotoxic. The in vivo efficacy with the absence of systemic toxicity of PDO1 and PDO2 is checked out. Results from this study highlight the potential of PDOs as new therapeutics for cancer.

The recent identification of genes encoding a novel family of soluble aromatic prenyltransferases from Streptomyces species and the structural characterization of one of these proteins are challenging discoveries in the biochemistry of natural compounds. In addition to their notable physiological role in the biosynthesis of aminocoumarin antibiotics, these enzymes represent an advanced tool for exploring novel isoprenoid substitutions in aromatic compounds and are expected to foster the emerging pharmacological applications of prenylated flavonoids.

We illustrate here our systematic exploration of the e®ects of com- position, temperature, pressure, and oxygen content on the thermodynamic stability and magnetic properties for La1¡x¡ySrxBayMnO3 manganites. Pa- rameters controlling magnetic transitions are identi¯ed through examples of single-valent compounds of RMnO3 (the Mn{O{Mn bond angles that can be equivalently described in terms of the tolerance factor) and Sr1¡xCaxMnO3 (the tolerance factor and disorder described in terms of the variance of A-site ion sizes), and the mixed-valent La0:5Sr0:5¡yBayMnO3 (the tolerance factor, variance of sizes, and the local strains described in terms of the elongated Mn{O bonds). By using an example of kinetically stable, atomically-ordered layered-perovskites we show that improved useful properties, such as the in- crease in the Curie temperature TC and enhancement of colossal magneto- resistive e®ect at room temperature, can be achieved through decreases in structural distortions such as variance of sizes and local strains.

As a continuation of our research and with the aim of obtaining new agents against Chagas disease, an extremely neglected disease which threatens 100 million people, eighteen new quinoxaline 1,4-di-N-oxide derivatives have been synthesized following the Beirut reaction. The synthesis of the new derivatives was optimized through the use of a new and more efficient microwave-assisted organic synthetic method. The new derivatives showed excellent in vitro biological activity against Trypanosoma cruzi. Compound 17, which was substituted with fluoro groups at the 6- and 7-positions of the quinoxaline ring, was the most active and selective in the cytotoxicity assay. The electrochemical study showed that the most active compounds, which were substituted by electron-withdrawing groups, possessed a greater ease of reduction of the N-oxide groups.
