Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The mononuclear Cu(II) complex, [Cu(o-Va)2(H2O)2] (o-HVa = o-vanillin, 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR, FT-Raman, and electronic spectroscopies and compared with the results obtained for the free ligand. The optimized geometry, the harmonic vibrational frequencies and the electronic transitions of the complex and the ligand were calculated using methods based on the density functional theory. Antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and SOD-mimic activities of the complex were studied and compared with the analogous copper complex with vanillin, [Cu(Va)2(H2O)2]. Stability of the compounds in the essayed solution and with time was determined by means of conductimetric measurements. Their redox behavior was studied by cyclic voltammetry and was compared with that observed for the ligands. The complexes undergo two main reductions and one oxidation processes involving the metal center and the coordinated ligand, respectively.

Uruguay es el 6to país exportadar mundial de arroz y a pesar de que el sistema de cultivo del arroz aplicado es considerado sustentable, la creciente demanda tuvo como consecuencia la intensificaci6n de los cultivos. Generalmente la aplicaci6n de un herbicida en un cultivo de arroz es seguida por la inundaci6n del cultivo y, dependiendo de las practicas agrfcolas, se aplican tam bien fungicidas e insecticidas. En función del manejo del agua realizado, de las condiciones ambientales y de las propiedades fisicoqufmicas de los pesticidas, estos pueden persistir hasta su degradaci6n en el area donde fueron aplicados 0 ser transportados fuera del area de cultivo, contaminando otros recursos naturales. Par todos estos motivos se debe tener extrema precauci6n en el uso de fitosanitarios y conocer el nivel en el que se encuentran ya que por su acumulaci6n 0 residualidad pueden suponer un riesgo no solo para el consumidor, sino tambien para el ambiente. Con el fin de generar información para un futuro estudio del impacto ambiental que pueden producir dichos agroqufmicos en el ecosistema del arroz, se desarrollaron diversas tecnicas analfticas multi-residuos para la determinaci6n de residuos de pesticidas mediante LC-DAD, LC-QqQ/MS, LC-QLlT/MS Y GCCMS en diversas matrices representativas: suelo, agua, arroz paddy y arroz blanco. Para cada determinaci6n se optimizaron las condiciones de extracción y cleannup y las condiciones instrumentales para el analisis de los compuestos de interes. Se desarrollaron y validaron metodologfas de analisis multi-residuo para la determinación de 9 herbicidas de post-emergencia en suelo, agua y grana de arroz utilizando diferentes condiciones de extracci6n y clean-up y el mismo metodo cromatografico mediante LC-DAD. Las principales metodologfas de extracci6n evaluadas fueron extracci6n con solvente en suelos mediante la agitación con shaker orbital, extracción en fase sólida para el analisis de agua y metodologfas basadas en el metoda de QuEChERS para grana de arroz.

<p>A simple methodology for the simultaneous determination of 67 pesticides, 25 veterinary drugs, and aflatoxin M1 in raw milk<br />was developed and validated. After evaluating different combinations of sample preparation protocols, an extraction with acetonitrile:water (2:1) with QuEChERS citrate buffer salts and a combination of RP-C18 and anhydrous magnesium sulfate<br />for the dispersive clean-up, using gas and liquid chromatography couples to mass spectrometry for determination, was selected. Recovery percentages were between 70 and 120%, with relative standard deviations below 20% at 5, 20, and 50 μg kg−1. Aflatoxin M1 was recovered in the range 66 to 88% at 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 μg kg−1 with relative standard deviation between 8 and 11%. The quantification limits for all the analytes with the exception of diclofenac were below their respective maximum residue<br />limits. The method was applied for the analysis of 20 commercial samples, some of which showed at least one contaminant below their maximum residue limits.</p>

The visual appearance and olfactory cues of liquid soap can trigger powerful expectations and associations in consumers' mind, which largely influence purchase decisions and shape product experience. In this context, the aims of the present work were: (a) to study the effect of appearance (color and transparency) and fragrance on conceptual associations and expectations of liquid hand soap and (b) to evaluate if preference patterns moderate such effect. Eight samples of liquid hand soap were obtained following a full factorial design with three 2-level variables: fragrance (herbal vs. fruity), color (green vs. orange), and transparency (transparent vs. pearly). Samples were evaluated by 104 female participants, who rated their liking and used a check-all-that-apply question to describe the samples in terms of sensory characteristics, expected functional aspects of the product, and conceptual associations. Results showed that appearance and transparency did not influence consumer liking. However, fragrance had a significant effect on consumer liking, expectations and conceptual associations of liquid hand soap. The effect of fragrance on expectations and conceptual associations depended on consumer liking of the fragrance. In addition, pearly appearance did not influence liking but had a significant effect on consumer expectations regarding functional aspects of the liquid hand soap. Practical applications Consumers associated the fragrance they preferred with a higher cleansing ability and perceived skin improvement, as well as with more positive emotional and conceptual associations. Pearly appearance was positively associated with functional aspects of the soaps, such as cleansing and moisturizing effects.

The present study aimed to identify the main aspects involved in consumers' perception of four types of antiperspirants/deodorants (APDs); cream, aerosol, roll‐on and stick; and compared the findings by using projective techniques; word association (WA) and product personality profiling (PPP) tasks. To apply the PPP task, participants had to imagine that each type of APDs was a person and describe it by gender, age, marital status, children, physical complexion, personality, work/profession/occupation, transport used, physical activity performed, and diet type. The different terms obtained were grouped into 16 categories in the WA task and in 36 subcategories in the PPP task. Both techniques provided data on different and complementary aspects of the products studied. While WA provided information on the characteristics of the different forms of APDs, the PPP gave information about the image that consumers have of each product. Both techniques could be used independently or in a complementary way.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the incorporation of caffeine as a model active ingredient on the quality attributes of a bioadhesive emulgel formulation previously optimized by Quality by Design (QbD) tools. Emulgels are emerging topical drug delivery systems for cosmetic or pharmaceutical uses, which combine the advantages of both emulsions and gels. METHODS: In this work, the observed and predicted values for spreadability, phase separation by centrifugation and detachment forces performed by texturometer, were compared with those of the control and active-containing emulgel formulations. In addition, rheological properties, release of caffeine and comparative in vitro/ex vivo bioadhesion properties were evaluated using human skin. RESULTS: The flow curves of emulgel formulations showed the typical pseudoplastic and no thixotropic flow with yield stress. The incorporation of active ingredient did not produce significant changes. All emulgels were uniformly spread and no significant differences in spreadability values between control and caffeine containing formulations and neither respect to those predicted values from experimental design optimization were found. Emulgel formulations showed appropriate detachment forces values and no significant differences between caffeine loading and control emulgel formulations were observed. CONCLUSION: Caffeine was successfully vehiculized in this optimized bioadhesive emulgel formulation, which showed high robustness regarding the process variability. A summary of the resource.
We present a general purpose QM-MM-MD engine (DYNGA) designed to test alternative hybrid Hamiltonians geared towards the treatment of problems of interest in structural biology including the use of experimental data constraints. In this first presentation we use DYNGA to explore the behaviour of a traditional QM-MM approach in the treatment of the water–water interaction. We find the potential energy hypersurface for the water dimer computed with the HF 4-31G*/TIP3P hybrid Hamiltonian tends to be too flat. We also explore the effect of using traditional QM-MM techniques on proton wires and conclude there is a need for improvement, possibly addressed by using polarizable force fields.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The wax hydrocarbon fractions of native Butia and Syagrus species collected from Palms in different regions of the of Rio Grande do Sul state (Brazil) and in Rocha (Uruguay) were analyzed to evaluate their potential as chemotaxonomic markers. The wax was extracted with chloroform and the resulting wax was fractionated by preparative TLC. The hydrocarbon fractions were analyzed by GC-MS. Statistical analyses were completed with the Statistica 5.0 program. The total crude wax yields averaged 0.31% w.w–1 dried leaves for Butia samples and 0.28% for Syagrus samples. The linear hydrocarbons represented on average 15% of the total waxes in the case of Butia samples and 13.7% in Syagrus samples. Hentriacontane and triacontane were the main components of all samples. The comparison of the means showed significant differences among Butia and Syagrus samples, and amongst Butia samples collected in different localities. In the case of the Syagrus collections no consistent groupings could be made. In the case of Butia samples the formation of three groupings could be observed, which were consistent with the species described for their geographical distribution. A summary of the resource.
The coupling of 2-(tributylstannyl)cyclopent-2-enone with several (π-allyl)palladium complexes derived from allylic electrophiles was investigated as the key step in the synthesis of jasmonoids. These compounds have an important role in plant development, triggering direct and indirect responses when harmed to induce pest resistance. Palladium-catalyzed coupling conditions to obtain a jasmonoid library are described. The retention of geometry of the olefin in the allyl group is not always observed due to syn-anti isomerization of the (π-allyl)palladium complex. The methodology was employed for the synthesis of a simplified jasmonic acid analog.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Saliva and plasma levels were measured in six healthy volunteers |b who took a therapeutic dose of Paracetamol (1 g) |b and 5 hours later a lipidic meal was administered. The saliva/plasma ratio showed a higher value during the first two hours and after food intake than that observed between 2 and 5 hours.Bile was collected in five patients with bladder lithiasis |b during the operation.Forty miligrams of total Paracetamol (free and conjugated) were detected in bile after hydrolysis with stomach homogenate of Helix pomatia L. All measurements were performed by reversed phase HPLC technique. A reabsorption of Paracetamol can be concluded after food intake |b probably due to an enterohepatic circulation of the drug. A simulation was done with population parameters of Paracetamol using a pharmacokinetic model.

For understanding the electrical and optical properties of electrodeposited Cl-doped Cu2O thin films, we have studied layers with increasing thickness and Cl concentrations of 0.8 and 1.2 at. %. The deposits were characterized by measuring the charge transport, the optical reflectance, and the photoluminescence. No significant decrease of electrical resistivity was observed in doped samples compared to undoped ones. A decrease of about five orders of magnitude was measured and ascribed to the presence of pinholes, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy analyses. From optical measurements, we concluded that the Cl atoms are incorporated into substitutional sites of Cu2O lattices in agreement with photoluminescence results showing a strong reduction in the peak intensity of VO+2 defects in comparison to undoped layers. Computational calculation using density functional theory has pointed out high formation energy for single Cl related defects, but low formation energy for Cl-defect complexes, such as ClO + VCu, that strongly compensate the carriers generated by the Cl doping.

The aim of the present report is to show the synergistic effect of conducting polyaniline and manganite nanoparticles on the low field magnetoresistance response. We specially focused on the role of the conducting polyaniline interphase in a broad range of temperatures and low applied magnetic fields. Our results showed an increment on the electrical conductivity and enhancement on the magnetoresistance for lower amounts of conducting polyaniline additions with respect to the manganite unloaded samples. We also found that close to room temperature, the changes in magnetoresistance are mostly due to an increment of the spin polarization and spin disorder due to the presence of polyaniline interphase. However, at intermediate temperatures the polyaniline interphase intrinsic magnetoresistance showed an additional contribution to the total negative magnetoresistance response. These results, suggest that conducting polymer interphase shows both passive and active roles in the enhancement of the low field magnetoresistance of inorganic-organic nanocomposites.

<p>The electronic and vibrational properties of cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin (CoTPP) molecules deposited onto a<br />Cu2N−Cu(100) surface were studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. The Cu2N spacer layer promoted the decoupling between the localized electronic states of CoTPP and the metallic substrate, enabling the observation of electronic states of nearly free molecules. The experimental results are supported by ab initio calculations, and the correspondence with C−H and C−C bonding<br />vibrations detected by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) has been shown. For molecules adsorbed at the interface<br />between Cu2N and Cu, the IETS signal was also observed.</p>

Looking for single molecule electronic devices, we have investigated the charge transport properties of individual tetra-phenylporphyrin molecules on different substrates by ultrahigh-vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and by first-principles calculations. The tetra-phenylporphyrins with a Co atom (Co-TPP) or 2 hydrogens (H2-TPP) in the central macrocycle when deposited on Cu3Au(100) substrates showed a diode-like behavior with p and n type character, respectively. After removing the central hydrogens of H2-TPP molecule with the STM tip an ohmic behavior was measured. The rectifying effect was understood from the theoretical point of view by assuming for Co-TPP HOMO conduction and for H2-TPP LUMO conduction, both selectively elected by the hybridization of states between molecule and substrate surface.

Las catinonas sintéticas son drogas estimulantes de síntesis, comercializadas en el mercado ilegal por sus propiedades estimulantes<br />y perturbadoras del sistema nervioso central, para su uso recreativo, solas, o como adulterantes de cocaína y derivados<br />anfetamínicos. A nivel mundial existe un número creciente de reportes de intoxicaciones agudas y complicaciones por<br />consumo de estas sustancias. En Uruguay fueron detectadas por primera vez en el año 2015, existiendo una información<br />epidemiológica muy limitada. Las catinonas sintéticas no se detectan por las técnicas inmunocromatográficas disponibles en<br />los laboratorios de los servicios de urgencias de nuestro país. Se describe el primer caso de intoxicación por una catinona<br />sintética (dibutilona) en Uruguay, en un paciente de 45 años, por consumo de un polvo vendido como “éxtasis”, presentando<br />como complicación un síndrome coronario agudo, con una buena evolución posterior. La confirmación diagnóstica se realizó<br />mediante su detección en orina por cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas. La estructura química de<br />la dibutilona y su mecanismo de acción explican las manifestaciones clínicas y la complicación isquémica por vasoespasmo<br />coronario. En ausencia de una noción clara de exposición y ante la situación epidemiológica actual, la presencia de un cuadro<br />clínico compatible con una droga estimulante y resultado negativo para cocaína y anfetaminas en estudios inmunocromatográficos,<br />debe hacer plantear la sospecha de otros estimulantes de síntesis como las catinonas, tal como ocurrió en<br />este caso.
