Trifluoroacetonitrile (CF3CN) is a decomposition product from the promising dielectric heptafluoro isobutyronitrile (C4F7N) under partial discharge process, so can be used to detect failures in gas-insulated switchgear. In this work, we study through density functional theory (DFT) calculations the adsorption of CF3CN on pristine aluminium nitride nanosheets (AlNNS) and defective Al-vacancy (vAl) and N-vacancy (vN) AlNNS, in order to explore the potential of these nanomaterials as sensors for this gas. Our energetic analysis shows negligible adsorption energy for the pristine surface but strong interactions can be observed between the molecule and the monovacancy-defected surfaces, with adsorption energy values estimated to be about − 2.2 and − 3.1 eV for CF3CN/vN-AlNNS and CF3CN/vAl-AlNNS, respectively, which suggests chemisorption processes. Furthermore, our geometric and bonding studies revealed the formation of new N—Al interactions between gas and monovacancy-defected surfaces, with serious distortions for the vAl-AlNNS nanosheet. The electronic density of states and band structure analysis reveals moderate band gap variations after gas adsorption. In contrast, significant changes in the work function and the magnetic moment of defective AlNNS were computed after gas exposition, for all optimized adsorption configurations. Low force stereolithography is exploited for the first time for one-step facile fabrication of chemiluminescence (CL) flow-through cells that bear unrivalled features as compared to those available through milling or blowing procedures or alternative 3D printing technologies. A variety of bespoke cross-section geometries with poly hedral features (namely, triangular, square, and five-side polygon) as well as semicircular cross-section are herein critically evaluated in terms of analytical performance against the standardcircular cross-section in a flat spirally-shape format. The idea behind is to maximize capture of elicited light by the new designs while leveraging 3D printing further for fabrication of (i) customized gaskets that enable reliable attaching of the active mixing zone of the CL cell to the detection window, (ii) in-line 3D-printed serpentine reactors, and (iii) flow confluences with tailorable shapes for enhancing mixing of samples with CL reagents. Up to twenty transparent functional cells were simultaneously fabricated without inner supports following post-curing and surface treat ment protocols lasting less than 5 h. In fact, previous attempts to print spirally-shaped cells in one-step by resorting to less cost effective photopolymer inkjet printing technologies were unsuccessful because of the requirement of lengthy procedures (>15 days) for quantitative removal of the support material. By exploiting the phthalazinedione-hydrogen peroxide chemistry as a model reaction, the five-side irregular pentagon cell exhibited superior analytical figures of merit in terms of LOD, dynamic range and intermediate precision as compared to alternative designs.Computational fluid dynamic simulations for mapping velocities at the entry region of the spiral cell corroborated the fact that the 5-side polygon cross-section flow-cell with Y-type confluence permitted the most efficient mixing of reagents and sample while enabling larger flow velocities near the inlet that contribute to a more efficient capture of the photons from the flash-type reaction. The applicability of the 3D-printed 5-side polygon CL cell for automatic determination of hydrogen peroxide using a computerized hybrid flow system was demonstrated for the analysis of high matrix samples, viz., seawater and saliva, with relative recoveries ranging from 83 to 103%. Triamcinolone acetonide (TA) is a powerful anti-inflammatory drug used in the treatment of inflammatory ocular disorders; however, its poor aqueous solubility and ocular anatomical barriers hinder optimal treatment. The aim of this work was to obtain triamcinolone acetonide nanocrystals (TA-NC) to improve ocular corticosteroid therapy. Self-dispersible TA-NC were prepared by the bead milling technique followed by spray-drying, exhaustively characterized and then evaluated in vivo in an ocular model of endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU). Self-dispersible TA-NC presented an average particle size of 257 ± 30 nm, a narrow size distribution and a zeta potential of −25 ± 3 mV, which remained unchanged for 120 days under storage conditions at 25 ◦C. In addition, SEM studies of the TA-NC showed uniform and spherical morphology, and FTIR and XRDP analyses indicated no apparent chemical and crystallinity changes. The subconjunctival administration of TA-NC in albino male white rabbits showed no clinical signs of ocular damage. In vivo studies proved that treatment with self-dispersible TA-NC alleviated the inflammatory response in the anterior chamber and iris in EUI rabbit eyes. Dispersible TA-NC are a promising approach to obtaining a novel nanometric TA formulation for ocular disorders. Biological control may benefit from the behavioral manipulation of natural enemies using volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Among these, herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) provide potential tools for attracting or retaining predators and parasitoids of insect pests. This work aimed to characterize the VOCs emitted by pear plants in response to attack by Cacopsylla bidens (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), a major pest in pear orchards, to compare these with VOCs induced by a leaf chewing insect, Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), and to evaluate the behavioral response of Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) to HIPVs from pear plants damaged by either herbivore. The results demonstrated that plants damaged by the pear psylla emitted VOC blends with increased amounts of aliphatic aldehydes. Leafroller damage resulted in increased amounts of benzeneacetonitrile, (E)-4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7-triene, β-ocimene and caryophyllene. In olfactometer bioassays, larvae of C. externa were attracted to herbivore-damaged plants when contrasted with undamaged plants. When plant odors from psylla-damaged were contrasted with those of leafroller-damaged plants, C.externa preferred the former, also showing shorter response lag-times and higher response rates when psylla-damaged plants were present. Our results suggest that pear plants respond to herbivory by modifying their volatile profile, and that psylla-induced volatiles may be used as prey-specific chemical cues by chrysopid larvae. Our study is the first to report HIPVs in pear plants attacked by C. bidens, as well as the attraction of C. externa to psyllid-induced volatiles. Although living standards in certain parts of the world have improved significantly in recent decades, these improvements have often been accompanied by environmental degradation that poses health risks to millions of people. Sustainable food choices play a critical role in addressing these environmental challenges. The current review summarizes how sustainable food choices are used as an impression management action aimed at projecting a desirable image of oneself to others. We show how three distinct factors — status striving, group cooperation, and the desire to attract a partner — influence the use of sustainable food as an impression management tactic. The review concludes by highlighting several future research directions based on recent research on related topics. Recently inorganic perovskites have had a deep impact in perovskites-based devices allowing the fabrication of high efficiency and high stability devices. To continue with the development of these technologies a detailed study of the optoelectronic properties of these materials is necessary since this is a fundamental tool for the design of new and more efficient devices. In the present work, the optical properties of γ-CsPbI3 nanoparticles are studied using temperature dependent spectroscopic techniques of transmittance and photoluminescence. The absorption spectrum shows a marked excitonic behavior especially at low temperatures. Analyzing this spectrum with the Elliot function the evolution with temperature of the bandgap energy and the exciton binding energy is studied. From the evolution of the shape of the excitonic peak, both in the absorption and photoluminescence, we determined the excitonic recombination nature of photoluminescence and exciton-phonon interaction energy. Once proven the excitonic nature of photoluminescence we prove that the Stokes Shift has its origin in excitonic thermalization. Finally, analyzing the low energy region of the absorption spectrum the Urbach energy was determined. The obtained values, which are very low for solution processed nanoparticles, indicates that the nanoparticles present excellent crystallinity. To interpret the experimental IR spectra, [Cu(ala-gly)(batho)] was modelled in the gas phase using DFT at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of theory and the calculated vibrational frequencies were analyzed. Solid-state characterization is in agreement with pentacoordinate complexes of the general formula [Cu(L-dipeptide)(batho)]·x solvent, similar to other [Cu(L-dipeptide)(diimine)] complexes. In solution, the major species are heteroleptic, as in the solid state. The mode of binding to the DNA was evaluated by different techniques, to understand the role of the diimine and the dipeptide. To this end, studies were also performed with complexes [CuCl2 (diimine)], [Cu(L dipeptide)(diimine)] and free diimines, with phenanthroline, neocuproine and 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl phenanthroline. The cytotoxicity of the complexes was determined on human cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 (breast, the first triple negative), and A549 (lung epithelial) and non-tumor cell lines MRC-5 (lung) and MCF-10A (breast). [Cu(L-dipeptide)(batho)] complexes are highly cytotoxic as compared to cisplatin and [Cu(L-dipeptide)(phenanthroline)] complexes, being potential candidates to study their in vivo activity in the treatments of aggressive tumors for which there is no curative pharmacological treatment. Apiculate yeasts belonging to the genus Hanseniaspora are predominant on grapes and other fruits. While some species, such as Hanseniaspora uvarum, are well known for their abundant presence in fruits, they are generally characterized by their detrimental effect on fermentation quality because the excessive production of acetic acid. However, the species Hanseniaspora vineae is adapted to fermentation and currently is considered as an enhancer of positive flavour and sensory complexity in foods. Since 2002, we have been isolating strains from this species and conducting winemaking processes with them. In parallel, we also characterized this species from genes to metabolites. In 2013, we sequenced the genomes of two H. vineae strains, being these the first apiculate yeast genomes determined. In the last 10 years, it has become possible to understand its biology, discovering very peculiar features compared to the conventional Saccharomyces yeasts, such as a natural and unique G2 cell cycle arrest or the elucidation of the mandelate pathway for benzenoids synthesis. All these characteristics contribute to phenotypes with proved interest from the biotechnological point of view for winemaking and the production of other foods. Glycerol dehydrogenase (GldA) from Escherichia coli BW25113, naturally catalyzes the oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone. It is known that GldA exhibits promiscuity towards short-chain C2-C4 alcohols. However, there are no reports regarding the substrate scope of GldA towards larger substrates. Herein we demonstrate that GldA can accept bulkier C6-C8 alcohols than previously anticipated. Overexpression of the gldA gene in the knockout background, E. coli BW25113 ΔgldA, was strikingly effective converting 2 mM of the compounds: cis dihydrocatetechol, cis-(1 S,2 R)− 3-methylcyclohexa-3,5-diene-1,2-diol and cis-(1 S,2 R)− 3-ethylcyclohexa-3,5- diene-1,2-diol, into 2.04 ± 0.21 mM of catechol, 0.62 ± 0.11 mM 3-methylcatechol, and 0.16 ± 0.02 mM 3-ethyl catechol, respectively. In-silico studies on the active site of GldA enlightened the decrease in product formation as the steric substrate demand increased. These results are of high interests for E. coli-based cell factories expressing Rieske non-heme iron dioxygenases, producing cis-dihydrocatechols, since such sough-after valuable products can be immediately degraded by GldA, substantially hampering the expected performance of the recombinant platform. Although nowadays landspreading and incineration are the conventional disposal methods for the primary sludge (PS) and biosludge (BS) generated in the wastewater treatment plants of the pulp mill industry in Uruguay, their direct incineration for energy recovery is the most preferable one. Here, we propose the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method as a pre treatment to improve the fuel characteristic of PS and BS. Proximate and ultimate analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis show that the HTC afects PS and BS diferently regarding carbon fxation, energy densifca tion and energy conversion efciency. Moreover, ash composition measured by X-ray fuorescence indicates that the HTC efectively diminishes the slagging and fouling indexes for both feedstocks, which can increase the life expectancy of boil ers. Alternative PS, BS, and their hydrochars were activated with H3PO4 to produce activated carbons, i.g. the BET specifc surface area was as high as 800 m2 /g for PS-AC, and exhibits CO2 adsorption capacity of 5 mmol/g at 10 bar at 273 K. These studies provide alternatives to direct incineration and landspreading of PS and BS in Uruguay to reduce their environmental impact, either by enhancing their fuel quality or by converting them into much more valuable products to face air pollution. In the present study, a ßGL obtained from the Antarctic yeast Mrakia sp. LP 7.1.2016 was produced on a bioreactor scale, purified, characterized, and the enzyme’s properties studied for a potential enological application. Sodium-dodecylsulfate–polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis indicated a high molecular weight for this enzyme, it having at least two subunits of 134 and 14 kDa. ßGL exhibited a pH optimum of 5.0 and retained substantial activity and stability at pH 4.0. The temper ature range for optimal activity was 50–55 ◦C, with the enzyme demonstrating thermostability up to 50 ◦C and retaining 87% of residual activity at that temperature after 3 h. The respective kinetic constants determined with p-nitrophenyl-ß-D-glucopyranoside and cellobiose were 0.38 and 1.79 mM for Km and 20.1 and 5.65 μmol− 1 mg− 1 min.1 for Vmax, ß-Glucosidase manifested high activity in 10–25% (v/v) ethanol, 30.0 mg L− 1 sulfur di oxide, and 10–200 g L− 1 fructose; but it was strongly inhibited by glucose, retaining only 6% of residual activity in the presence of 20 g L− 1 . Upon investigating the influence of the enzyme on Muscat-wine glycosidic pre cursors, we found significant differences in terpene content after 14 days of ßGL treatment at an eightfold in crease over control-wine levels. The enzyme was more active toward the precursors of the monoterpenes nerol and geraniol and oxides of trans- and cis-linalool. These findings contribute to our understanding of the potential of cold-active enzymes in advantageous biotechnological applications to enology. Fungal decay, predominantly caused by Penicillium expansum, is the main cause of apple postharvest losses. To overcome this problem, synthetic fungicides are applied to fruit before storage. Public concern about this practice has raised interest in developing alternative biocontrol strategies for postharvest diseases. Debaryomyces hansenii F9D, a psychrotrophic Antarctic yeast, has been previously selected as a promising biocontrol agent due to its ability to reduce blue mold incidence in apples and pears. Previous in vitro studies indicated that the biocontrol mechanism of this yeast does not involve the production of antifungal metabolites or other inhibitory or competitive interactions with the pathogen. In this work, we conducted further studies in order to understand the interaction between Penicillium expansum and D. hansenii F9D within apple wounds. The growth of both mi croorganisms in apple wounds during cold storage was followed over time by q-PCR and viable cell counts. Scanning electron microscopy observations of co-inoculated and control wounds (inoculated only with the yeast or with the pathogen) were conducted to evaluate if the pathogen conidia could germinate in presence of the yeast and to determine the colonization patterns of P. expansum and the biocontrol yeast. Our results indicate that Debaryomyces hansenii F9D is able to prevent cold stored apples’ wounds rot by inhibiting the virulence factors produced by the pathogen without impeding its growth. These findings provide circumstantial evidence for a new biocontrol mechanism associated with the prevention of fungal decay in apples by biocontrol yeasts during cold storage of fruit. The larval stages of the cestode parasites belonging to the genus Echinococcus grow within internal organs of humans and a range of animal species. The resulting diseases, collectively termed echinococcoses, include major neglected tropical diseases of humans and livestock. Echinococcus larvae are outwardly protected by the laminated layer (LL), an acellular structure that is unique to this genus. The LL is based on a fibrillar meshwork made up of mucins, which are decorated by galactose-rich O-glycans. In addition, in the spe cies cluster termed E. granulosus sensu lato, the LL features nano-deposits of the calcium salt of myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (Insp6 ). The main purpose of our article is to update the immunobiology of the LL. Major recent advances in this area are (i) the demonstra tion of LL “debris” at the infection site and draining lymph nodes, (ii) the characterization of the decoy activity of calcium Insp6 with respect to complement, (iii) the evidence that the LL mucin carbohydrates interact specifically with a lectin receptor expressed in Kupffer cells (Clec4F), and (iv) the characterization of what appear to be receptor-independent effects of LL particles on dendritic cells and macrophages. Much information is missing on the immunology of this intriguing structure: we discuss gaps in knowledge and propose possible avenues for research. We studied the structure, stability and electronic propierties of bilayer graphene when both layers are doped with a pair of 3p-2p elements. The interlayer interaction energy of codoped bilayer graphene can be fine-tuned by changing the dopants. Al/B codoped bilayer graphene presents the strongest stacking, almost twice the value determined for the undoped materials. In five cases, the interaction is weaker than in bilayer graphene. Interlayer covalent bonds form only in six cases; P/O codoped bilayer graphene presents the largest interlayer distance: 3.97 Å, about 0.72 Å longer than the value determined for undoped-bilayer graphene. In four cases, we observed that a semiconductor-to-metal transition occurs when two layers are stacked. For the remaining cases except P/N codoped bilayer graphene, the band gaps are reduced with respect to the values computed for the codoped monolayers. Controlling the number of layers is an exciting approach to fine-tune the band gap of codoped graphene. An alternative to mitigate the consumption of fossil fuels is the use of biomass as an energy source. In this sense, the rural sector in Latin America has great potential due to its multiple biomass sources. For this reason, this study aims to analyze potential technologies related to the production of energy from biomass and its application in the Latin American rural sector. To achieve this, four key processes are analyzed. First is biomass conditioning through solar dryers. Next are the thermochemical processes that allow for their transformation into biofuels, for which the pyrolysis and the hydrothermal methods were selected due to the flexibility of the products obtained. Subsequently, cogeneration is studied to produce electrical and thermal energy from biomass or its derivatives. Finally, to close the CO2 cycle, a balance of CO2 fixation in a forest plantation is presented as an example of carbon accumulated in biomass. The literature systematic review allowed us to determine that the technologies mentioned in this work have different degrees of implementation in the Latin American rural sector. However, they have great potential to be applied on a large scale in the region, making it possible to adapt energy production to climate change and improve the life quality of its inhabitants. Zika virus has spread around the world with rapid pace in the last five years. Although symptoms are typically mild and unspecific, Zika’s major impact occurs during pregnancy, generating a congenital syndrome. Serology plays a key role in its diagnosis. However, its use is limited due to the uncertainty caused by the cross-reaction of antibodies elicited in response to other flavivirus infections when tested in direct immunoassays. Using a panel of previously generated anti-Zika non-structural protein 1 (NS1) nanobodies, a set was selected that only recognizes epitopes present in Zika and is immunogenic to humans. A proper arrangement of these nanobodies was made and conditions were optimized in order to develop a novel serology assay. This new ELISA relies on the inhibition of the binding of a set of selected nanobodies to Zika-immobilized NS1 when previously incubated with Zika convalescent sera. With the objective to develop a potential 99mTc radiopharmaceutical for imaging the androgen receptor (AR) in prostate cancer, four ligands bearing the same pharmacophore derived from the AR antagonist flutamide were prepared, labeled with 99mTc, and their structures corroborated via comparison with the corresponding stable rhenium analogs. All complexes were obtained with high radiochemical purity. Three of the complexes were highly stable, and, due to their favorable physicochemical properties, were further evaluated using AR-positive and AR-negative cells in culture. All complexes exhibited considerable uptake in AR-positive cells, which could be blocked by an excess of flutamide. The efflux from the cells was moderate. They also showed significantly lower uptakes in AR-negative cells, indicating interactions with the AR receptor. However, the binding affinities were considerably reduced by the coordination to 99mTc, and the complex that exhibited the best biological behavior did not show sufficient specificity towards AR-positive cells. In this study, two adamantane-linked isothiourea derivatives containing a common 4-chlorophenyl substituent coupled with 4-nitrobenzyl or 4-bromobenzyl moieties were synthesized. Both derivatives were characterized, in the solid state and in solution, through a synergistic combination of experimental and in silico techniques, and the results are of great value for the chemical and structural characterization of related compounds. The crystal structures of both derivatives were analyzed in depth, including Hirshfeld surface analysis and lattice energy calculations, revealing a predominant dispersive component of the total energy that stabilizes crystal packing. Both compounds showed potent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and moderate activity against the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans. In addition, in vitro anti-proliferative activity assays showed that the 4-bromobenzyl analogue displays higher activity than the 4-nitrobenzyl one, with IC50 values under 30 μM against five human cancer cell lines. Our results give evidence of the potential of the adamantane/isothiourea combination to render auspicious scaffolds for new potential chemotherapeutic agents. The reactivity of alkali–manganese(II) and alkali trifluoroacetates towards amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) was studied in the solid-state. K4Mn2(tfa)8, Cs3Mn2(tfa)7(tfaH), KH(tfa)2, and CsH(tfa)2 (tfa = CF3COO–) were thermally decomposed under vacuum in fused quartz tubes. Three new bimetallic fluorotrifluoroacetates of formulas K4Mn3(tfa)9F, Cs4Mn3(tfa)9F, and K2Mn(tfa)3F were discovered upon thermolysis at 175 °C. K4Mn3(tfa)9F and Cs4Mn3(tfa)9F feature a triangular-bridged metal cluster of formula [Mn3(μ3-F)(μ2- tfa)6(tfa)3]4−. In the case of K2Mn(tfa)3F, fluoride serves as an inverse coordination center for the tetra hedral metal cluster K2Mn2(μ4-F). Fluorotrifluoroacetates may be regarded as intermediates in the trans formation of bimetallic trifluoroacetates to fluoroperovskites KMnF3, CsMnF3, and Cs2MnF4, which crystal lized between 250 and 600 °C. Decomposition of these trifluoroacetates also yielded alkali hexafluorosili cates K2SiF6 and Cs2SiF6 as a result of the fluorination of fused quartz. The ability to fluorinate fused quartz was observed for monometallic alkali trifluoroacetates as well. Hexafluorosilicates and heptafluoro silicates K3SiF7 and Cs3SiF7 were obtained upon thermolysis of KH(tfa)2 and CsH(tfa)2 between 200 and 400 °C. This ability was exploited to synthesize fluorosilicates under air by simply reacting alkali trifluoroa cetates with a-SiO2 powder. This account describes the results of three decades of work on the production, chemistry, and synthetic applications of cis-cyclohexadienediols obtained by biotrans formation of arenes. These cis-diols are valuable chiral building blocks, as they are enantiomerically pure, possessing good accessibility and high chemical versatility. Our work covers enzymatic and chemical aspects of the biotransforma tion, as well as synthetic applications of the resulting cis-diols. We optimized the biotransformation procedure, described a computational model of TDO, designed new mutants, identified new metabolites, and disclosed new reactions of the Rieske dioxygenases. Also, the reactivity of the cis-diol core was studied, with an emphasis in addition reactions, such as cycloadditions, osmylations, and electrophilic addi tions. Preparation of building blocks and bioactive natural products is described from the synthetic point of view, mostly concerning cyclitols, carbasugars, acetogenin and carbohy drates. This chapter introduces a simple and robust in vitro viability assay to screen bioactive small molecules (e.g., natural, synthetic) against the monomorphic and infective (bloodstream) form of Trypanosoma brucei brucei. The assay relies on a bioluminescent transgenic parasite harboring a genetically encoded copy of a thermostable redshifted firefly luciferase from Photinus pyralis. The major advantages of the assay are simplicity and cost efficiency, along with excellent quality parameters. The bioassay allows estimating parasite numbers and viability (and metabolic state) as a function of bioluminescence (BL) signal. Parasites are grown in the presence of the molecules of interest in a 96-well microplate, and 24 h later, BL is determined with a simple protocol lacking washing steps, using cost-efficient reagents with a reasonable readout time for high-throughput applications. Luminescence is the most exploited phenomena for chemosensing. Real-time measurements must be accurate and reproducible along cycles for the selection of the best sensing materials. At the same time, sample degra dation by excitation-light irradiation must be kept minimal. Last but not least, expensive equipment should be avoided, whenever possible. In this work, we present a low-cost in-situ luminescence measuring experimental array designed for solid-state sensing of vapors. It allows repeated activation and subsequent guest entrance along many measuring cycles. A common halogen lamp is used as heating element for the activation of the sample under vacuum in a sealed aluminium chamber. Then, vapor guest molecules are forced into the chamber by a laboratory vacuum pump. Luminescence is LED-excited and measured by a portable reflectance probe connected to a miniature spectrometer. The chosen case study is a luminescent polycrystalline metal-organic framework composed by europium(III), zinc(II) and oxydiacetate ligand. This compound has a honeycomb porous structure that can be repeatedly activated and rehydrated. The associated structural distortion is accompanied by a remarkable variation in the luminescence profile with minimal chemical degradation or crystallinity loss. Results are analyzed and critically compared to those obtained by conventional luminescence. They show that, while conventional luminescence struggles to provide reproducible absolute results, the pre sented method stands as a simple, robust and trustworthy approach, in which accurate and reproducible in-situ data can be obtained along many cycles. Furthermore, the presented experimental array comparatively mini mizes the light-induced degradation of the tested materials. The effect of glue-immobilizing the sample is also addressed using the presented method.
