Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A novel Re(IV) complex containing catechol as ligand has been prepared and characterized. The crystal structure of (HNEt3)(NBu4)[ReCl4(cat)]�H2cat was determined. The rhenium ion presents a distorted octahedral geometry, being bonded to a bidentate catecholate group and four chloride anions. The magnetic properties of the complex were studied, a /2D/ (the energy gap between ±3/2 and ±1/2 Kramers doublets) value of 190(10) cm�1. This is the largest /2D/ value reported for Re(IV) up to now. �

A summary of the resource.
Molecular modeling is becoming a common component of inorganic chemistry courses. This usage is a consequence of the growing inclusion of computational techniques in all research fields. Some articles have appeared in this Journal that present molecular modeling exercises designed to show the bonding and acid–base properties of compounds (1–3). We devised a computational experiment to examine the hydration of simple cations and show the geometrical and thermochemical parameters of the hydrated ions. Most undergraduate students have only a limited exposure to the application of molecular modeling to inorganic chemistry problems. This exercise offers a good first approach to the theoretical study of interesting systems. The exercise is divided in two parts. In the first part, a structural study is performed for the species Mn+(H2O) where M = Li, Na, K, Be, Mg, Ca and n = 1 or 2. The influence of the charge and size of the cation on the M−O equilibrium distance is discussed, as well as the distortions on the water molecule caused by the cation. In the second part, the ΔhydH298° for the hydration reaction of the six metals is calculated. Finally, the performance of the different computational models is discussed.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Heterometallic compounds containing La(III), bivalent cationsM(M = Co, Ni, Ca), and 2,20-oxydiacetate (oda) as connecting ligand have been prepared and characterized. The complexes can be formulated as [La2M3(oda)6(H2O)6] Æ 12H2O. The structure of [La2Co3(oda) 6(H2O)6] shows the presence of the La(III) coordinated by six carboxy and three ether oxygen atoms, and the Co(II) cation bonded to four carboxy oxygens and two molecules of water. An open 3D framework is observed, containing large hexagonal channels. The chemical systems were also investigated in solution (25.0 �C, I = 0.5 M Me4NCl) by potentiometry. The same kind of polynuclear species have been found in aqueous solution.

2-Thiobarbituric acid (TBA) coated gold nanoparticles (average diameter ) 5.90 nm) were produced and studied by several experimental and theoretical methods. As part of this study, the molecular structure of TBA tautomers in the solid, in polar solutions, and adsorbed onto gold nanoparticles was studied. The resolution of this complicated system (10 possible isomers) was accomplished with the aid of experimental (IR, UVvis, and NMR) and theoretical (DFT and MP2) methods. The general conclusion is that there are two preeminent isomers, N1 and N10, with different stabilities in different media. N1, the keto-thione tautomer, is the most stable in gas phase (¢Go 298 � 8-9 kcal/mol lower than the second-most stable isomer, depending on the method of calculation used). However, experimental spectroscopic data supported by the theoretical calculations strongly suggest an equilibrium between the tautomers N1 and N10 in methanol solution, where enolization of one keto group is produced by proton transfer from the methylene group, which is more acidic than the NH groups. With the use of the polarizable continuum method for simulating solvents, N10 is predicted to be even more stable than N1 by ¢Go 298 � 1 kcal/mol in methanol. On the other hand, the IR spectrum of the solid can be best explained by assuming that only N10 is present, a fact also supported by the observation that the IR spectrum of TBA absorbed onto gold nanoparticles can be explained by a larger ratio of [N10]/ [N1] than that present in methanolic solution. Isomerization of N1H N10 can be explained by intervention of the solvent, proceeding faster in methanol solutions than in DMSO, where it is nevertheless observed after a time, according to the 13C NMR spectra. Our experiments support absorption of TBA onto gold nanoparticles through S-Au and N-Au interactions, with the preeminence of a N10-like enol structure. The experiments also demonstrate that the synthesized TBA-coated gold nanoparticles can autoassociate by hydrogen bonding to form larger structures. This same H-bonding capacity also assures that these coated nanoparticles act as thistles toward proteins in solution, binding them strongly, presumably not by chemical reaction but by a network of hydrogen bonds.

Five trinuclear copper(II) complexes supported by nitrilotripropionate (ntp) have been prepared at acidic pH values and characterized by elemental, infrared and X-ray diffraction methods, [Cu3(H2O)6(Hntp)2] (ClO4)2�2.5H2O (1), [Cu3(H2O)6(Hntp)2](CF3SO3)2�3.5H2O (2), [Cu3(H2O)9(Hntp)2](SO4)�4H2O (3), (H5O2) [Cu3Cl3(H2O)3(Hntp)2] (4), and (H5O2)[Cu3(NO3)3(H2O)3(Hntp)2] (5). The structure of the polynuclear complexes show the presence of well-defined capsules formed by three Cu(II) cations and two protonated Hntp2� ligands in a tritopic arrangement. The counter ion of the copper salt used in the preparation influences the final structure, by changing the connection between the capsules. In 1 and 2 the capsules are joint together by means of carboxylate–copper interactions with no intervention of the anions. In the case of 3, sulfate anions provide intercapsule interactions through hydrogen bonds. Chloride and nitrate have a different role in the structure of the capsules. 4 is an anionic capsule due to the participation of Cl� in the copper coordination sphere. It also provides further capsule–capsule interaction through long-distance Cu–Cl bonds. 5 is a special case because nitrate is a bridging ligand, being bidentate towards one copper atom and monodentate towards another copper ion of an adjacent capsule.

Aqueous extracts of basidiomycete fungi were screened for the presence of lectins by hemagglutination (HA) assays with mouse, rabbit, and sheep red blood cells. From mycelia and/or fruiting bodies, 23 extracts were prepared; 15 extracts exhibited HA activity towards mouse erythrocytes, with specific activities ranging from 12 to 440 lectin units (LU) mg�1 protein. In HA inhibition assays, 43 carbohydrates includingmono-, di-, tri-, tetrasaccharides, glycoproteins, and polysaccharides were tested as haptens, to determine the saccharide-binding specificities of the lectins. A novel lectin with specificity towards N-acetyl-glucosamine was purified from mycelia of Punctularia atropurpurascens using affinity chromatography on chitosan–Sepharose. The lectin has a subunit molecular mass of 67 kDa determined by SDS–PAGE and a pI of 5.0

A lectin was isolated from fruiting bodies of the mushroom Gymnopilus spectabilis (GSL) by ionic exchange chromatography. The lectin agglutinates mouse red cells exhibiting broad specificity towards several monosaccharides including the N-acetylneuraminic acid. Agglutination was also inhibited by the glycoproteins: fetuin, lactoferrin, and recombinant erythropoietin. GSL is a glycoprotein possessing 16 % of carbohydrates; the SDS-PAGE showed two bands with molecular mass of 52.1 and 64.4 kDa. Isoelectric focusing displayed microheterogeneity, with two bands at pIs 5.1 and 5.3. The lectin was stable between pH 2 and pH 8 while at pH 10, the agglutination decayed to 50%of initial activity. Incubation at 40 and 80 °C led to 50 and 100 % loss in activity of the lectin, respectively. Synthesized GSL-Sepharose interacts with serum pregnant mare gonadotropin, and at least two subpopulations of this glycoprotein were separated. There was no interaction between transferrin and soluble GSL while a partial recognition was achieved with GSL-Sepharose. The terminal sialic acid seems to play an active role in modifying the interaction with GSL, depending if the lectin is in a soluble or immobilized form. The purified lectin inhibited in vitro the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger.

A summary of the resource.
Heterogeneous nucleation and further growth of HgI2 onto glass were studied by the physical vapor deposition (PVD) method, with and without an argon atmosphere. Glass substrates 2″×2″ in area were used for nucleation and growth. Supersaturation strongly determined not only the nuclei population and size, but also the HgI2 nucleation phase. A range of nucleation–growth temperatures between 303 and 333 K for the substrate, and a range of initial argon pressure between 1.3 and 2.6×104 Pa were found appropriate for nucleation and growth in the α (red) phase of HgI2. Other conditions, such as an argon pressure higher than 4×104 Pa, determined the nucleation and growth in the β (yellow) metastable phase. After a nucleation growth time of 30 min, clusters of about 0.5 μm for β-HgI2 and 1 μm for α-HgI2 and a minimum distance between the clusters of about 1 and 10 μm were, respectively, obtained. Coalescence was performed by annealing the clusters at a temperature between 303 and 333 K and from 5 min to 24 h, at an initial argon pressure of 104 Pa. They coalesced to form larger clusters, which, in the case of the β-phase also transformed to the α-stable phase. From the experimental nucleation–growth and further coalescence conditions, correlations between supersaturation conditions and phase were established. Also, considerations about interface free energies and nucleation phase were made. Future work will be conducted to diminish nuclei size and enlarge nuclei population, seeking for early stages of nucleation.

Noncompetitive immunoassays are advantageous over competitive assays for the detection of small molecular weight compounds. We recently demonstrated that phage peptide libraries can be an excellent source of immunoreagents that facilitate the development of sandwich-type noncompetitive immunoassays for the detection of small analytes, avoiding the technical challenges of producing anti-immunocomplex antibody. In this work we explore a new format that may help to optimize the performance of the phage anti-immunocomplex assay (PHAIA) technology. As a model system we used a polyclonal antibody to 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) and an anti-immunocomplex phage clone bearing the cyclic peptide CFNGKDWLYC. The assay setup with the biotinylated antibody immobilized onto streptavidin-coated magnetic beads significantly reduced the amount of coating antibody giving identical sensitivity (50% saturation of the signal (SC50) = 0.2–0.4 ng/ml) to the best result obtained with direct coating of the antibody on ELISA plates. The bead-based assay tolerated up to 10 and 5% of methanol and urine matrix, respectively. This assay system accurately determined the level of spiked 3-PBA in different urine samples prepared by direct dilution or clean-up with solid-phase extraction after acidic hydrolysis with overall recovery of 80–120%. �

A summary of the resource.
Due to their size, small molecules cannot be simultaneously bound by two antibodies, precluding their detection by noncompetitive two-site immunoassays, which are superior to competitive ones in terms of sensitivity, kinetics, and working range. This has prompted the development of anti-immune complex antibodies, but these are difficult to produce, and often exhibit high crossreactivity with the unliganded primary antibody. This work demonstrates that anti-immune complex antibodies can be substituted by phage particles isolated from phage display peptide libraries. Phages bearing specific small peptide loops allowed to focus the recognition to changes in the binding area of the immune complex. The concept was tested using environmental and drug analytes; with improved sensitivity and ready adaptation into on-site formats. Peptides specific for different immune complexes can be isolated from different peptide libraries in a simple and systematic fashion allowing the rapid development of noncompetitive assays for small molecules

The freshwater cyanotoxins, microcystins (MCs), pose a global public health threat as potent hepatotoxins in cyanobacterial blooms; their persistence in drinking and recreational water has been associated with potential chronic effects in addition to acute intoxications. Rapid and accurate detection of the over 80 structural congeners is challenged by the rigorous and time consuming clean up required to overcome interference found in raw water samples. MALDI-MS has shown promise for rapid quantification of individual congeners in raw water samples, with very low operative cost, but so far limited sensitivity and lack of available and versatile internal standards (ISs) has limited its use. Two easily synthesized S-hydroxyethyl-Cys(7)-MC-LR and -RR ISs were used to generate linear standard curves in a reflectron MALDI instrument, reproducible across several orders of magnitude for MC-LR, -RR and -YR. Minimum quantification limits in direct water samples with no clean up or concentration step involved were consistently below 7 μg/L, with recoveries from spiked samples between 80 and 119%. This method improves sensitivity by 30 fold over previous reports of quantitative MALDI-TOF applications to MCs and provides a salient option for rapid throughput analysis for multiple MC congeners in untreated raw surface water blooms as a means to identify source public health threats and target intervention strategies within a watershed. As demonstrated by analysis of a set of samples from Uruguay, utilizing the reaction of different MC congeners with alternate sulfhydryl compounds, the m/z of the IS can be customized to avoid overlap with interfering compounds in local surface water samples.

A class 2 integron was found in an Escherichia coli isolate mediating a urinary tract infection. Unlike other class 2 integrons from pathogens, the encoded IntI2 protein was functional. The integron possessed a dfrA14 cassette, and a second novel cassette in which a lipoprotein signal peptidase gene is predicted.

Tetrahydro-1-benzazepines have been described as potential antiparasitic drugs for the treatment of chagas disease and leishmaniasis, two of the most important so-called ‘forgotten tropical diseases’ affecting South and Central America, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania chagasi parasites, respectively. Continuing our extensive work describing the structural characteristics of some related compounds with interesting biological properties, the crystallographic features of three epoxy-1-benzazepines, namely (2SR,4RS)-6,8-dimethyl-2- (naphthalen-1-yl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1,4-epoxy-1-benzazepine, (1), (2SR,4RS)- 6,9-dimethyl-2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1,4-epoxy-1-benzazepine, (2), and (2SR,4RS)-8,9-dimethyl-2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1,4- epoxy-1-benzazepine, (3), all C22H21NO, and two 1-benzazepin-4-ols, namely 7-fluoro-cis-2-[(E)-styryl]-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzazepin-4-ol, C18H18FNO, (4), and 7-fluoro-cis-2-[(E)-pent-1-enyl]-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1-benzazepin-4- ol, C15H20FNO, (5), are described. Some peculiarities in the crystallization behaviour were found, involving significant variations in the crystalline structures as a result of modest changes in the peripheral substituents in (1)–(3) and the occurrence of discrete disorder due to the molecular overlay of enantiomers with more than one conformation in (5). In particular, an interesting phase change on cooling was observed for compound (5), accompanied by an approximate fourfold increase of the unit-cell volume and a change of the Z0 value from 1 to 4. This transition is a consequence of the partial ordering of the pentenyl chains in half of the molecules breaking half of the 3 symmetry axes observed in the roomtemperature structure of (5). The structural assembly in all the title compounds is characterized by not only (N,O)—H� � �(O,N) hydrogen bonds, but also by unconventional C—H� � �O contacts, resulting in a wide diversity of packing.

A summary of the resource.
The evidence presented in this paper is a first effort to contextualize aspects related to the sourcing, production and uses of red paint during the second millenniumBC in Northern Peru. The site testedwas Gramalote, a fishing settlement of the Peruvian North Coast. The results show that the inhabitants of this settlement had access to a local source of hematite but they also used cinnabar that camefroma distant region located in the Southern Highlands. Based on the abundance of lithic and bone tools, shell containers and ceramic seal stamps, the authors of this article study the process behind the production of this painting. Using physicochemical techniques such as Portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology complemented with structural analysis through X-ray diffraction, applying conventional and synchrotron radiation on selected samples, the authors look at issues related to sourcing, production and uses of the red pigment. In addition, isotopic analysis helped to determine the provenience of cinnabar which is also the earliest evidence of human use of this mineral in the Andean region. Temporal and contextual distributions of these artifacts are analyzed to understand the manipulation and uses of the red paint. Finally, this study also gives a glimpse of the symbolic meaning red pigment could have played in the daily life of a second millennium BC maritime community on the Pacific coast of Peru.
