A summary of the resource.
We revisit the singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔEST) of silicon trimer and evaluate the gaps of its derivatives by attachment of a cation (H+, Li+, Na+, and K+) using the wavefunction-based methods including the composite G4, coupled-cluster theory CCSD(T)/CBS, CCSDT and CCSDTQ, and CASSCF/CASPT2 (for Si3) computations. Both 1A1 and 3 inline image states of Si3 are determined to be degenerate. An intersystem crossing between both states appears to be possible at a point having an apex bond angle of around α = 68 ± 2° which is 16 ± 4 kJ/mol above the ground state. The proton, Li+ and Na+ cations tend to favor the low-spin state, whereas the K+ cation favors the high-spin state. However, they do not modify significantly the ΔEST. The proton affinity of silicon trimer is determined as PA(Si3) = 830 ± 4 kJ/mol at 298 K. The metal cation affinities are also predicted to be LiCA(Si3) = 108 ± 8 kJ/mol, NaCA(Si3) = 79 ± 8 kJ/mol and KCA(Si3) = 44 ± 8 kJ/mol. The chemical bonding is probed using the electron localization function, and ring current analyses show that the singlet three-membered ring Si3 is, at most, nonaromatic. Attachment of the proton and Li+ cation renders it anti-aromatic. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

<p>La temática de las <strong>Plantas Medicinales</strong>, es motivo de creciente interés a nivel nacional y mundial. Los Químicos y botánicos de Nuestra Casa de Estudios, se han interesado en el tema, realizando investigaciones científicas, con resultados valiosos y útiles. El Departamento de Documentación y Biblioteca, ha querido brindar su colaboración en este sentido, en la creación de un <strong>“Tesauro sobre Plantas Medicinales”</strong> de la región. Es un vocabulario controlado y estructurado, para el tratamiento normalizado de la información sobre el tema. El Tesauro, constituye un elemento indispensable para todo Centro de Información con la finalidad de indizar documentos sobre el tema. Su importancia deriva, en que los autores, los documentalístas y los usuarios, utilizan terminos diferentes para disignar un mismo concepto. Más concretamente sirve para crear un lenguaje normalizado de uso universal. El Tesauro sobre Plantas Medicinales de la <strong>Facultad de Química</strong>, no es un diccionario ni una enciclopedia, sino un intrumento de trabajo documental, que permite asegurar la coincidencia entre los diferentes lenguajes empleados por los emisores y receptores de la información, pudiendo así acceder rápidamente a la información. Uno de los objetivos de este grupo de trabajo multidisciplinario, es una continua adaptación y puesta al día del Tesauro, contando muy especialmente con la sugerencia de los usuarios, para mejorar el producto, en una sociedad dinámica y en constante evolución.</p>

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A new method for the determination of silicon in Portland cement, based on the generation of volatile species without sample pre-treatment, is proposed. The method reduces operational complexity and time without loss of precision and with similar accuracy as the current methods. It employs microwave-assisted (domestic microwave oven) digestion to produce volatile silicon fluorides by reaction of the sample with a fluorinated salt (CaF2) in the presence of H2SO4 (98% w/w), using a Teflon® (PFA) reactor. The volatile fluorides are flushed out by a dry nitrogen stream and collected in 0.3 mol l−1 NaOH solution where they dissolve. Silicon is determined in this solution by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The recoveries are between 98 and 102%, and the precision is better than 2.5% relative standard deviation (R.S.D).

A summary of the resource.
A flow-injection system is proposed for the determination ofmetal-based additives in lubricating oils. The system, operating under computer control uses a motorised syringe for measuring and injecting the oil sample (200 μL) in a kerosene stream, where it is dispersed by means of a packed mixing reactor and carried to an atomic absorption spectrometer which is used as detector. Zinc was used as model analyte. Two different systems were evaluated, one for low concentrations (range 0–10 ppm) and the second capable of providing higher dilution rates for high concentrations (range 0.02%–0.2%w/w). The sampling frequency was about 30 samples/h. Calibration curves fitted a second-degree regression model (r2 = 0.996). Commercial samples with high and low zinc levels were analysed by the proposed method and the results were compared with those obtained with the standard ASTM method. The t test for mean values showed no significant differences at the 95% confidence level. Precision (RSD%) was better than 5% (2% typical) for the high concentrations system. The carryover between successive injections was found to be negligible.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In this mini-review, a comprehensive discussion on the state of the art of hybrid organic–inorganic mixed ionic–electronic conductors (hOI-MIECs) is given, focusing on conducting polymer nanocomposites comprising inorganic nanoparticles ranging from ceramic-in-polymer to polymer-in-ceramic concentration regimes. First, a brief<br />discussion on fundamental aspects of mixed ionic–electronic transport phenomena considering the charge carrier transport at bulk regions together with the effect of the organic–inorganic interphase of hybrid nanocomposites is presented. We also make a recount of updated instrumentation techniques to characterize structure, microstructure,<br />chemical composition, and mixed ionic–electronic transport with special focus on those relevant for hOI-MIECs. Raman imaging and impedance spectroscopy instrumentation techniques are particularly discussed as relatively simple and versatile tools to study the charge carrier localization and transport at different regions of hOI-MIECs including both bulk and interphase regions to shed some light on the mixed ionic–electronic transport mechanism. In addition, we will also refer to different device assembly configurations and in situ/operando measurements experiments to analyze mixed ionic–electronic<br />conduction phenomena for different specific applications. Finally, we will also review the<br />broad range of promising applications of hOI-MIECs, mainly in the field of energy storage<br />and conversion, but also in the emerging field of electronics and bioelectronics.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The existent research literature of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC) is mainly focused on the dye but there are very few studies focused in the semiconductor. Here, we present the performance of hydrogen titanate nanotubes (HTNT), showing an enhancement of the solar cell efficiency from 5.95% to 7.63%, respect to anatase as photoelectrode. This enhancement could be explained in terms of open-circuit voltage, directly associated to the value of the HTNT band gap (Eg = 3.3 eV), the relative position of the edge conduction band; and the increase of the short-circuit current, directly associated to the enhancement of the specific area of the photoelectrode. All these characteristics are in very good concordance with our theoretical modelling of the system, based on First Principles calculations. In the present work, we report the enhancement of lithium-ion dissociation and transport in poly(acrylonitrile) host promoted by the addition of hydrogen titanate nanotube fillers for solid polymer electrolytes. We show experimental and theoretical evidence of lithium perchlorate dissociation due to the presence of the acidic hydrogen titanate nanotubes embedded in the polymer matrix. We performed confocal Raman microscopy analysis to reveal the presence of lithium perchlorate dissociation at the interface of polymer and nanotube fillers. The large affinity of perchlorate anions at the hydrogen titanate nanotube surface, as envisaged from the ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, could be responsible for the enhancement of more than 2 orders of magnitude in the lithium conductivity, reaching ∼4 × 10–4 S·cm−1 for a certain amount of nanotube fillers addition.

Los hígados de merluza (Merluccius hubbsi) son un subproducto de la industria fileteadora y se utilizan como fuente de aceite. En este trabajo se estudia el aceite contenido en dichos hígados durante su almacenamiento a 4oC y a -20o C frente a la del aceite extraído de ellos y guardado en iguales condiciones. El aceite contenido en los hígados almacenados a -20o C, se oxida en un par de semanas; el aceite extraído de ellos y almacena do en iguales condiciones se conserva durante varios meses. El problema principal radica en que, una vez que el aceite se deteriora en los hígados, no es posible estabilizarlo por el agregado de antioxidantes. Para obtener un aceite de buena calidad es imprescindible que los hígados se almacenen a una temperatura menor de -20oC, que su aceite se extraiga lo antes posible, que se le adicione de antioxidantes adecuados y que se le almacene refrigerado.

The purpose of the present research was further investigate the reproducibility of check-all-that-apply (CATA) questions for sensory product characterization. Evaluations obtained when such questions are used by consumers are rarely replicated and therefore reproducibility of the data may be at risk. Results from the present work, which included five studies, each with 100–200 consumers across a range of product categories, revealed that sensory product characterizations obtained using CATA questions with consumers are highly reproducible. Hence, the research confirms previous research by Jaeger, Chheang, et al. (2013) and extends it to the use of CATA terms in randomised presentation order as has been recommended to avoid satisficing response behavior. In the future, if CATA studies are conducted without replication and researches seek to examine the reliability of CATA data, the use of a posterior bootstrapping re-sampling approach is suggested.

The current research explored the possibility of using attribute ratings as a variant (RATA: rate-allthat- apply) to CATA questions (check-all-that-apply), in order to improve sample description and discrimination and to engage participants in greater cognitive processing. The RATA question variant was implemented by asking participants, for the terms they ticked as ‘‘apply’’, to indicate intensity (using a 3-pt scale with anchors ‘low’, ‘medium’ or ‘high’) or rate applicability (using a 5-pt scale anchored at ‘slightly applicable’ and ‘very applicable’). A total of four studies with 328 consumers were conducted. Studies 1–3 involved the consumption of products (milk desserts, bread and gummy lollies), whereas Study 4 was performed with yogurt labels. A between-subjects design was used in all studies to compare product characterizations from CATA and RATA questions. Across the four studies, compared to the simple CATA questions, the RATA variant led to an increase in the total number of selected terms and a small increase in the percentage of terms for which significant differences among samples were identified. Although the stability of sample and term configurations from CATA and RATA questions, calculated using a bootstrapping re-sampling approach, were similar, for two of the four studies RATA questions provided more stable sample and term configurations. Results from the present work reveal the potential of intensity-based CATA variants with consumers for sensory product characterization, but also suggest that these may be study and sample specific.

Uruguay is among the top eight exporters of rice in the world. Assessing the levels of Arsenic (As) in rice grain is a concern for human health. To ensure food safety, the laboratories need simple and rapid validated analytical methodologies to provide fast response, to allow the commercializa- tion of the products. A simple ultrasound-assisted method for sample preparation and determination of total arsenic using Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry was validated. The figures of merit were adequate for control purposes in terms of precision and trueness. Commercial samples of Uru- guayan rice were analyzed and the results did not differ significantly with those obtained using ICP-MS. The total arsenic concentrations ranged from 0.10 to 0.24 mg kg −1 . These values were below the maximum limit established in the region. The proposed methodology is simple, economic and does not require dras- tic conditions of sample preparation or expensive techniques.

DSC and TG/DTA were used to study charcoals obtained from eucalyptus wood at different pyrolysis temperatures, as well as the exchanged energy, and the transformations involved during the pyrolysis process. Charcoals DSC curves showed two exothermic peaks, at *610 and *750 K. The first peak was squashed for those charcoals obtained at higher final pyrolysis temperatures, and it disappeared in the charcoals obtained at 873 and 923 K. The second peak intensity increased and its location changed at the higher temperatures. Charcoal characterization showed a rise of heat values with the pyrolysis temperature.

Interest in measuring consumers’ perceived wellbeing in a food-related context has grown in the last<br />decade. Considering that wellbeing is one of the most important goals that people pursue to achieve a<br />good life, studying the influence of food on this construct can contribute to our understanding of how eating<br />behavior patterns are shaped. The conceptualization of wellbeing and the influence of specific food<br />products on different aspects of this construct are expected to vary with consumers’ cultural background.<br />The present work aimed to investigate cross-cultural differences in perceived wellbeing of food products<br />and to link those differences to product-specific consumer evaluations. A web-based study was carried<br />out with 1332 participants in seven countries on four continents: Brazil, China, France, Portugal, Spain,<br />Uruguay and USA. Nine food concepts (apple, beef, beer, broccoli, chocolate cake, coffee, fish, French fries<br />and milk) were presented to participants by means of an incomplete balanced design. For each concept,<br />participants gave their degree of agreement with 31 statements of a new wellbeing questionnaire, using a<br />7-point scale. The scores of the 31 items of the scale were significantly affected by country and food<br />concept, as well as through their interaction. The largest differences among products were found for<br />items related to physical and intellectual aspects of wellbeing, whereas the largest differences among<br />countries were found for items related to emotional and spiritual aspects. Results from this research provide<br />insights for measuring consumers’ perception of the influence of foods on wellbeing and highlight<br />the importance of taking into account cultural differences in the conceptualization of this construct

Hesperozygis myrtoides is a native species from Cerrado and Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The essential oil from aerial parts of this plant, collected at different periods of the year, was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and CG-MS. The most abundant compounds were limonene (2.1–22.7%), isomenthone (14.3–47.7%), neo-isomenthol (1.8–4.4%), pulegone (19.8–57.3%) and isomenthyl acetate (0.3–14.3%). The chromatographic data were processed using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) based on the major compounds. The multivariate analyses (MVA) indicated that the variation of chemical composition of principal substances of H. myrtoides essential oil depends on the altitude. The enantiomeric distribution of (R)-(+)-pulegone and (+)-isomenthone were established for the first time for this essential oil by bidimensional GC-chiral analysis.

The dissipation of field-applied difenoconazole, imidacloprid, pyraclostrobin and spinosad on Clementine mandarins (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.) under controlled conditions throughout the citrus production chain was assessed. At harvest, 42 days after application, the dissipation of these pesticides were 80, 92, and 48% for difenoconazole, imidacloprid, pyraclostrobin, respectively, and spinosad was below the level of detectability. At day 28 after application, spinosad was no longer detected. The model equations that best describe the dissipation curves of these pesticides on Clementine mandarins showed different patterns. Their half-life on Clementine, calculated by the best-fitted experimental data, were 19.2 day (1st-order model) for difenoconazole, 4.1 day (Root Factor (RF) 1st-order model) for imidacloprid, 39.8 day (2nd-order model) for pyraclostrobin and 5.8 day (1st-order model) for spinosad. These results are the first record of pyraclostrobin persistence on mandarins, showing a longer half-life in this matrix than those reported for any other fruit. The treated fruit were harvested and submitted to the usual postharvest treatments: first, a hypochlorite drenching was performed; as a second step, imazalil and wax were applied, and then the mandarins were stored at 4 °C. After 32 days, cold storage caused no significant effects on the residue levels of the four pesticides compared with those determined on freshly harvested mandarins. All residues were below their Codex and European Union (EU) maximum residue limit (MRL) for mandarin since the spray application day.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The synthesis of eight novel Zn(II), Co (II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Pt(II) complexes (2–9) derived from the ONNO tetradentate coumarin Schiff-Base donor ligands, L1 and the novel L2, was performed. All compounds were characterized by analytical, spectrometry and spectroscopy techniques. Complexes 2–4 were also characterized by DFT calculations and the structures of 5 and 6 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. A cytotoxicity study was carried out through an MTT assay in the carcinogenic cell line HeLa and the noncarcinogenic cell lines HFF-1 and HaCaT. The results indicated that among all the evaluated compounds, 2 and 6 presented the best anticarcinogenic potential against HeLa cells with an IC50 of 3.5 and 4.1 μM, respectively. In addition, classical molecular dynamics simulations were performed on the synthesized coordination compounds bound to G4 DNA architectures in the scope of shedding light on their inhibition mode and the most conserved interactions that may lead to the biological activity of the compounds.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In this research work, a multidisciplinary approach was applied to answer the question: do consumers perceive what semiotics want to convey? The idea behind was to determine if consumers’ expectations and associations raised by simulated yogurt labels, designed with different sign combinations frequently applied in commercial products, were in agreement with results from a semiotic analysis, and to check for cultural differences, comparing results from two Spanish-speaking countries (Spain and Uruguay). A survey of the plain yogurt market was performed, followed by a semiotic analysis of the gathered labels performed by a team of semiotics experts. Only the non-verbal elements such as images, visual structure, colors, typography and their combinations, were considered; so brand, price, nutritional information, composition, etc. were nor taken into consideration. The main messages conveyed by the labels were summarized and based on that, five yogurt model labels were designed and subsequently used as stimuli in a consumer study. An online consumer questionnaire, based on a word association task, was performed in both countries to understand the words, descriptions, associations, thoughts or feelings generated by the model labels. The approach was successful, and the results obtained showed that the main messages conveyed by the model labels were well understood in Spain and Uruguay; however some cultural differences in the perception of the messages could be highlighted.
