Anhydrous Sr(CF3COO)2 and Ba(CF3COO)2 open-framework structures featuring three-dimensional connectivity of metal−oxygen polyhedra were crystallized from a mixture of water and CF3COOH. Crystallization was induced via evaporation of the solvent mixture under a dry nitrogen flow. This approach differs from that routinely employed for crystallization of metal trifluoroacetates, which achieves solvent evaporation by heating under air and yields hydrated salts. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis as well as single-crystal and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction were employed to characterize the alkaline-earth trifluoroacetate products. Neither thermal analysis nor single-crystal X-ray diffraction detected the presence of crystallization water molecules, demonstrating these trifluoroacetates can be obtained in anhydrous form. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies showed that Sr(CF3COO)2 and Ba(CF3COO)2 are isostructural and crystallize in the rhombohedral R3̅ space group. Both compounds belong to the class of organic−inorganic extended hybrids and exhibit an open-framework structural motif with threedimensional connectivity of the metal−oxygen polyhedra and one-dimensional channels along the c axis. The channels are decorated with the trifluoromethyl groups of the trifluoroacetate ligands, and their average (minimum) diameters are &sim;3.75 (2.60) and 3.45 (2.25) Å for Sr(CF3COO)2 and Ba(CF3COO)2, respectively. This size range is comparable to the kinetic diameter of small molecules such as hydrogen (2.3 Å). Chemical substitution of barium for strontium affects not only the diameter of the channels but also the spatial arrangement of the trifluoromethyl groups within the channels and the coordination environment of the metal atoms. The different coordination requirements of the strontium and barium atoms are accommodated through the displacement of one of the two chemically distinct trifluoroacetate ligands relative to the metal center. The optical, electrical and surface properties of mercuric iodide platelets grown from solution in a HgI2-HI-H2O system were investigated by comparing them with Physical Vapor Transport (PVT) grown crystals. The absence of bulk imperfections and the uniformity of the as-grown surfaces and the KI solution etched surfaces were confirmed by optical microscopy. The as-grown surface uniformity is higher for solution grown crystals than that of PVT crystals, since the platelets do not have to be cleaved or polished. AFM studies show that the roughness for the cleaved, aged and etched surfaces were 0.06 nm, 0.48 nm and 0.3 nm respectively. Low temperature photoluminescence properties were measured for the two kind of crystals and will be discussed. However, I-V curves give higher current density and lower apparent resistivity values for the solution grown than for PVT grown crystals. Correlations between optical and surface quality as well as the electrical properties of the crystals grown from both solution and PVT methods are also discussed. Glass ceramics of PbB4O7 doped with 0.15 and 0.50% molar concentration of Ce and Eu were prepared by means of controlled crystallization of the glass powder. Crystallization was carried out at 590 °C for the undoped and at 640 °C for the doped glass ceramic samples. Heat treatment time was 60 and 180 min for both kinds of samples. Crystalline phase analysis reveals that the only present phase was lead diborate. Thermal analysis characterization shows that Europium may act as nucleation promoter, lowering the energy barrier for crystallization. On the other hand Cerium acts as inhibitor of the crystallization process. Optical characterization was done by means of absorption spectroscopy and luminescence measurements at room temperature. A shift in absorption edges was observed for both samples; this shift could be attributed to a large amount of BO4 groups as dopant concentration increases. From the luminescence spectra it was showed that the 5D0 to 7F2 red emission (613 nm) occurs through an electric dipole mechanism which is dominant in all the Europium doped samples, while in Cerium doped samples the emission peaks are due to the 5d–2F5/2 (528 nm) and 5d–2F7/2 (472 nm) transitions. Thermoluminescence analysis was performed with different irradiation doses (1 and 10 Gy) on samples at different concentrations. En el presente trabajo se optimizó la reacciòn de obtención de monogliceridos de acidos grasos y glicerol, catalizada POr la lipasa "G" del hongo Penicillium cyclopium. Se realiza la optimización del proceso, controlando variables como el pH, la temperatura, el tiempo de reacción, la relación de fases y concentraci6n de enzima. En primera instancia se analizan los "rangos utiles", es decir los valores de las variables dentro de los cuales se procedera a realizar la optimización. Se realizó luego un diseno experimental factorial en forma de caja, con 3 variables continuas: pH, temperatura y tiemPO de reacci6n. Se analizaron los resultados del diseno y se procedió a modelar matematicamente el comPOrtamiento de la enzima. El modelo fue verificado mediante tests estadisticos. Debido a los resultados del primer diseno, se realizó un segundo, en determinada zona del espacio de valores de las variables, para encontrar el maximo absoluto alcanzable. Se optimizaron luego las variables relación de fases y de sustratos para mejorar las posibilidades de la reacción. Se encontró un óptimo de rendimiento en MAG del 50%, que resulta alto si se considera la sencillez del metodo de reacción empleado. Los resul tados son mejorables si se modifica el sistema de reacci6n, realizando un control de la cantidad de agua en el sistema, tanto antes de la reacción, como durante la misma eliminando el agua formada mediante eliminación por evaporación. Se analizaron tambien las limitaciones del metodo de analisis utilizado. Las cantidades de producto fueron cuantificadas por densitometria de barrido en placa fina. Se estudió el error del metodo observandose que conduce a resultados que solo son reproducibles entre un 10 y un 15%, sin duda se han encontrado resul tados mas precisos con otros metodos de analisis. Se estudió tambien la especificidad de la enzima frente a las especies lipidicas, habiendose encontrado que la reacción de formación de DAG es muy rapida, y la de TAG no ocurre en condiciones de alrededor de 5 horas de reacci6n. Finalmente se comprob6 que a partir de los sustratos con los que se trabajó, la esterificación de monoenos transcurre mucho mas rapidamente que la de dienos y trienos. Sin embargo queda pendiente un estudio cabal sobre el tema pues deb era trabajarse con sustratos en donde las cantidades de dichos acidos sea comparable a la de los otros acidos. Este método extrae hierro hemo de la carne mediante agitación con acetona ácida, maceración en la oscuridad y determinación espectrofotométrica a 640nm sobre el filtrado. Es ampliamente utilizado, pero su descripción original no detalla la influencia de algunas variables. En numerosos trabajos se determina hierro hemo según el “método Hornsey” utilizando diferentes estrategias de agitación y tiempos de incubación diversos. Estas variables se optimizaron mediante un diseño multivariado de tipo central compuesto. Con el método optimizado se analizaron distintos cortes de carne vacuna para evaluar su valor nutricional en cuanto a niveles de hierro biodisponible. A partir de una optimización racional, se obtuvieron las condiciones experimentales adecuadas para realizar un método analítico, considerado de referencia, de forma sistemática y protocolizada en los laboratorios para evaluar el contenido de hierro hemo en carnes. El método propuesto, optimizado para las etapas de equilibrado isotópico y derivatización, presenta mayor eficiencia y simplicidad comparado con el método original, y cuenta con un sesgo adecuado al propósito. Nanoencapsulation may improve antimicrobial activity of nisin when applied on food systems such as lean beef. Nisin-loaded nanoparticles were prepared by alginate ionic gelation and further complexation with chitosan. A 3-factor, 3-level Box-Behnken experimental design and response surface methodology were used to optimize the formulation. Nanoparticles had an encapsulation efficiency of 36.1 ± 0.6%, a z-average of 66.4 ± 8.9 nm and a zeta potential of −31.7 ± 2.6 mV. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy observations confirmed particle size found by dynamic light scattering. Also, Raman spectroscopy analyses and zeta potential measurements showed ionic interactions between nisin and alginate. In vitro assessment of inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes growth at 4 °C indicated sustained antimicrobial activity of nisin-loaded nanoparticles for 21 days. Furthermore, encapsulated nisin was able to inhibit L. monocytogenes growth in vacuum-sealed, refrigerated beef samples for 10 days when applied at 400 IU/g and for 24 days when applied at 800 IU/g, while free nisin controlled microbial growth for only 4 and 17 days respectively. In sum, we describe the application of experimental design tools to produce nisin-loaded nanoparticles that may be used in the food industry to control microbial growth and hence extend the shelf-life of lean beef. The QuEChERS methods, CEN 15662 and AOAC 2007.01, and different clean-up variations were applied to the determination of pesticide residues in Peumus boldus Molina leaves, using LC and GC coupled to single and tandem mass spectrometry. Boldo belongs to the class of medicinal and aromatic plants. Because of its complex chemical composition including terpene peroxides, alkaloids and phenolic acids at concentrations typically 100-fold higher than that of a possible contaminant, it is a very challenging matrix for pesticide residue determination. Thin layer chromatography was used to evaluate the efficacy of removal of matrix co-extractives using different clean-up sorbents, including neutral alumina, graphitized carbon black (GCB), octadecyl reverse phase silica gel (RP-C18) and pH modification in the extraction and clean-up steps. The most promising method was a combination of GCB, RP-C18 and primary-secondary amine (PSA) within the QuEChERS template. The final optimized method was validated according to the SANTE guidelines using LC–MS/MS and GC–MS/MS. The method scope includes 84 representative pesticide residues with recoveries ranging from 70 to 119% and within laboratory relative standard deviations below 15%. The method was initially validated for 25 representative pesticides using GC-MSD, making it applicable in those laboratories equipped only with a single mass detector. It is important to emphasize that the method complies with the requirements of international pharmacopoeias and food regulatory agencies, since herbal teas are found in both categories, as herbal remedies and foods. In this work, we made a review about the application of Raman spectroscopy for quality control of honey and other food samples. Simultaneously, it was carried out a new research evaluating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) obtained by green synthesis for detection of the antibiotic Oxytetracycline (OTC), through Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). Glucose was used as reducing and capping agent in the formation of AgNPs in alkaline media. The frequencies found, belonging to the antibiotic at 20, 15, 10 and 5 ppb, could be visibly differentiated from those corresponding to honey, being unnecessary to perform any extraction procedure or tedious manipulation of the sample. Theoretical frequencies were obtained by Density Functional Theory calculations and compared with the normal modes from SERS measures, founding an excellent agreement between them. The analysis shows a preference for the adsorption of OTC on silver cluster through oxygen atoms. The use of biodiesel has generated a diversification of the energy matrix, which has led to a lower dependence on fossil fuels and a concomitant reduction of the adverse effects on the environment generated by their use. Currently, biodiesel is mainly produced by transesterification with short-chain alcohols of oils from different sources, in particular from oil crops, such as soybean and canola. Since the use of crops for the generation of fuels competes with their use as food, it seems appropriate to explore new oil sources for the production of biodiesel, such as the intracellular triglycerides accumulated by oleaginous yeasts. In this case, to achieve a competitive process, yeast production should be carried out using low-cost fermentable substrates such as industrial wastes or by-products. In this work we optimized the production of intracellular lipids by a previously selected oleaginous yeast strain in a fed-batch culture in presence of crude glycerol as a source of carbon and energy. In the optimized conditions an important improvement of lipid concentration was achieved, obtaining 12.2 g L−1 of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) and 26.6 g L−1 of dry biomass in 360 h of culture. A fraction of rice bran (RB), generated during the brown rice polishing, is utilized to extract oil, resulting in defatted RB (DRB). The aim of this study was to optimize the emulsification conditions to enhance the value of this byproduct by formulating potential vegan dressings and characterizing them. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the starch present in DRB yields the DRB concentrate (DRBC). A central composite design was applied and the results were analyzed using response surface methodology to select optimal conditions for an oil-in-water emulsion formula. Two formulations were chosen: one corresponds to the optimal conditions, with 26.5% of oil and 73.5% of DRBC dispersion (eoptimal), and the other one with 21.7% of oil and 78.3% of dispersion (eED8). The eoptimal formulation exhibited significantly lowermean De Brouckere diameter (D4,3) value and higher viscosity when compared with eED8. For both emulsions, the particle size distribution and D4,3 remained unchanged during storage, whereas viscosity decreased, and backscattering (BS) increased. Initially, both emulsions exhibited solid viscoelastic behavior, whichwas partially lost during quiescent storage. The increase in BS was attributed to particle disaggregation, ultimately leading to the aforementioned change in rheological behavior. In conclusion, although the designed emulsions underwent microstructural changes, they were stable against gravitational separation. To improve stability during quiescent storage, it is suggested to incorporate a thickening agent. Hence, it is propose to procced with the development of a vegan dressing based on the eoptimal emulsion, as it exhibits superior physicochemical properties. Mercuric iodide crystals in their platelet habit were grown by the polymer controlled vapor transport method. Mercuric iodide 99% in purity was sublimated at temperatures about 122 - 126 °C and vacuum conditions (10-5 mmHg), after selecting an appropriate polymer. Temperature profiles and experimental heat transfer models were determined for two growth furnaces using different insulator configurations for the cold extreme (air, ceramic wool, grilon, copper and ceramic wool). Growth conditions for few and separate nucleation points and large crystals were determined. Representative samples were characterized by optical microscopy and by measuring the current density and apparent resistivity of the material. Photodynamic therapy has advantages over conventional cancer superfcial tumor therapies, such as insignifcant side efects, minimal cumulative toxicity, excellent functional and cosmetic results, precise target treatment minimizing damage to neigh boring normal tissues, and optimum long-term tumor regression. Upconversion nanoparticles have been proposed to extend photodynamic therapy for treating non-superfcial tumors. In particular, compounds with low phonon energy, like KMgF3, with an optimal synthesis design and a suitable doping system, could be used for this therapy application. This particular matrix allows the incorporation of dopants as transition metals ions (as Mn2+) besides rare-earth elements, minimizing the use of the former. To obtain nanoparticles of suitable size for nanomedicine, we used a factorial experimental design to determine statistical synthesis conditions that signifcantly afect particles’ size. With the proposed synthesis method, it was possible to obtain KMgF3 nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 13.46±0.30 nm to 32.18±0.60 nm, values estimated with the XRD technique and with size distribution suitable for photodynamic therapy. We proved the good correlation between the particle size estimated from transmission electron microscopy images and powder X-ray difraction measurements. According to the statistical analysis, the temperature and the interaction of temperature with MgCl2 concentration signifcantly afect the particle size (signifcance level of 0.05). The present work describes the infuence of solvothermal synthesis parameters on the KMgF3 nanoparticle size for the frst time. The results are particularly interesting for further doping the system and its functionalization, foreseeing the fnal application in cancer treatment.
