<p>Clay honeycomb monoliths (MC) washcoated by pillared clay (PILC) obtained from the same starting material were used as support of manganese catalysts for the complete oxidation of acetone. Using the same clay for extrusion and pillaring processes intended to optimize the catalyst preparation respect to previous similar studies through raw materials saving, with subsequent local clay valorization, and washcoat adherence enhancement due to higher chemical affinity with the monolith substrate. To evaluate the influence of the PILC presence on the<br />catalytic behaviour, two other non-coated monolith catalysts were prepared as references, having different loads of manganese as function of the impregnation cycles number applied, either one (Mn/MC) or two (Mn2/MC). All the catalysts were characterized by TGA, XRD, XRF, N2 physisorption and SEM. The catalytic tests used acetone as a VOC model molecule. The results indicated that the PILC coating (Mn/PILC/MC) led to a higher percentage of Mn2O3 (7 wt%) compared to Mn/MC (1 wt%). Moreover, the PILC-washcoated sample exhibited better performance in the acetone oxidation than Mn2/MC regardless this sample had higher Mn2O3 loading (11 wt%). This effect was related to the active phase crystal characteristics as well as to the textural properties induced by<br />the PILC washcoating.</p>

Diverse parasites and pathogens affect productivity and survival of honey bees. Plant secondary metabolites are potential alternative treatments, however, their effect has been little studied on microsporidian diseases. Furthermore, there is poor information about the toxicity resulting from prolonged oral administration of these substances to bees. In this research, we evaluated in vivo effects of different essential oils and main components (MCs) on bee survival and Nosema ceranae development under an ad libitum non-choice regimen. Substances administered on sucrose syrup to newly emerged bees at different concentrations were avidly consumed and caused different survival performances. Nevertheless, sublethal doses of substances did not control the parasite. Diversos parásitos y patógenos afectan la productividad y la supervivencia de las abejas melíferas. Los metabolitos secundarios de las plantas son tratamientos alternativos potenciales, sin embargo, su efecto ha sido poco estudiado sobre las enfermedades microsporidianas. Además, hay poca información sobre la toxicidad resultante de la administración oral prolongada de estas sustancias a las abejas. En esta investigación, evaluamos los efectos in vivo de diferentes aceites esenciales y componentes principales (CPs) sobre la supervivencia de abejas y el desarrollo de Nosema ceranae bajo un régimen de ad libitum sin elección. Las sustancias administradas en el jarabe de sacarosa a las abejas recién emergidas a diferentes concentraciones se consumieron con avidez y causaron diferentes resultados de supervivencia. No obstante, las dosis subletales de sustancias no controlaron el parásito.

Herein, by using dispersion-corrected density functional theory, we investigated the Diels–Alder chemistry of pristine and defective graphene. Three dienes were considered, namely 2,3-dimethoxy-1,3-butadiene (DMBD), 9-methylanthracene (9MA), and 9,10-dimethylanthracene (910DMA). The dienophiles that were assayed were tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and maleic anhydride (MA). When pristine graphene acted as the dienophile, we found that the cycloaddition products were 47–63 kcal mol−1 less stable than the reactants, thus making the reaction very difficult. The presence of Stone–Wales translocations, 585 double vacancies, or 555-777 reconstructed double vacancies did not significantly improve the reactivity because the cycloaddition products were still located at higher energy than the reactants. However, for the addition of 910DMA to single vacancies, the product showed comparable stability to the separated reactants, whereas for unsaturated armchair edges the reaction was extremely favorable. With regards the reactions with dienophiles, for TCNE, the cycloaddition product was metastable. In the case of MA, we observed a reaction product that was less stable than the reactants by 50 kcal mol−1. For the reactions between graphene as a diene and the dienophiles, we found that the most-promising defects were single vacancies and unsaturated armchair edges, because the other three defects were much-less reactive. Thus, we conclude that the reactions with these above-mentioned dienes may proceed on pristine or defective sheets with heating, despite being endergonic. The same statement also applies to the dienophile maleic anhydride. However, for TCNE, the reaction is only likely to occur onto single vacancies or unsaturated armchair edges. We conclude that the dienophile character of graphene is slightly stronger than its behavior as a diene.<br /><br />

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
We have employed density functional theory to study and characterize a new family of belt shaped molecules which use the norbornadiene tether and aromatic molecules as linkers. Our results indicated that the inclusion of the norbornadiene unit eliminates the strain commonly associated with the synthesis of belt-shaped molecules. Polymerization of the latter proved to be an effective method towards the bottom-up synthesis of organic nanotubes with uniform properties. The band gap of the infinite nanotubes proposed can be engineered by changing the molecule which links the norbornadiene tethers. In effect, the gap of the pyrene/norbornadiene and coronene/norbornadiene based nanotubes were 2.9 eV and 0.9 eV, respectively, as indicated by HSE calculations. Among the six belts assayed, two can be used to separate the magic fullerenes C180 and C240, given that large interaction energies were found upon complexation

A series of L-lyxo and L-xylo- pentofuranose-mimetic iminosugars and derivatives were efficiently synthesized in a stereoselective manner, through a concise strategy which involves an organocatalyzed Mannich reaction of an imine and a protected dioxanone as key step, using D-proline as catalyst. A preliminary evaluation of their activity as potential anti-trypanosomal agents was studied. One of the synthesized compounds showed an interesting activity against bloodstream Trypanosoma brucei brucei (EC,)=3.8 + 1.0 1M).

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The mechanism and the final outcome of the Knoevenagel-Doebner reaction are discussed. The condensation reaction between different hydroxy-substituted aromatic aldehydes and malonic acid is performed using piperidine as organocatalyst. The key role of the catalyst is clearly pointed out during the decarboxylation of ferulic acid, without the use of a strong decarboxylating agent, leading to a 4-vinylphenol derivative. Based on the results obtained, the studied pathway may be important in the understanding of vinylphenol produc-tion during malting and brewing of wheat and barley grains. Finally, changing the solvent of the reaction from pyridine to water in the Knoevenagel-Doebner reaction of 4-hydroxybenzaldehydes, dimerization of resulting styrene derivatives is observed. These results can be of interest also in the field of food chemistry, since cinnamic acids are frequently found in fruits and vegetables used for human consumption

A summary of the resource.
Here we present a new analytical method where immunoconcentration of the analyte is coupled to quantitative matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis allowing in minutes the identification and highly sensitive quantitation of microcystins (MCs) as model targets. The key element is a site-specific in vivo biotinylated nanobody of broad cross-reactivity with microcystins. The single biotin moiety at the C-terminus and the small size of the nanobody (15 kDa) enable its oriented and tightly packed immobilization on magnetic beads, providing a highly efficient capture of the toxin. The binding capacity of the bioadsorbent is partially loaded with an easily synthesized internal standard for MS quantitation. After capture, the beads are directly dispensed on the MALDI-TOF MS target enabling the identification and sensitive quantitation of the microcystin (MC) congeners. Since salts and contaminants are removed during the concentration step, no cleanup or other sample treatments are needed. The method was validated with a large number of water and serum samples with excellent precision and recovery at quantitation limits of 0.025 μg/L of MC.

Recently inorganic perovskites have had a deep impact in perovskites-based devices allowing the fabrication of high efficiency and high stability devices. To continue with the development of these technologies a detailed study of the optoelectronic properties of these materials is necessary since this is a fundamental tool for the design of new and more efficient devices. In the present work, the optical properties of γ-CsPbI3 nanoparticles are studied using temperature dependent spectroscopic techniques of transmittance and photoluminescence. The absorption spectrum shows a marked excitonic behavior especially at low temperatures. Analyzing this spectrum with the Elliot function the evolution with temperature of the bandgap energy and the exciton binding energy is studied. From the evolution of the shape of the excitonic peak, both in the absorption and photoluminescence, we determined the excitonic recombination nature of photoluminescence and exciton-phonon interaction energy. Once proven the excitonic nature of photoluminescence we prove that the Stokes Shift has its origin in excitonic thermalization. Finally, analyzing the low energy region of the absorption spectrum the Urbach energy was determined. The obtained values, which are very low for solution processed nanoparticles, indicates that the nanoparticles present excellent crystallinity.

A summary of the resource.
A study on the osmylation of a series of chiral cis-cyclohexadienediols is described. Dihydroxylation takes place preferentially on the more electron-rich double bond. For 3-methylcyclohexa-3,5-diene-1,2-diol, 1a, the presence of protecting groups on the diol functionality is crucial in determining the degree of regio- and stereoselectivity of the reaction. X-ray crystal structure data of the major product of the osmylation of diene 1a, a protected (2S)-2-methylconduritol E, is reported. The regioselectivity of the reaction also depends on the method of osmylation used, the stoichiometric procedure being more selective than the catalytic one.

A summary of the resource.
Food waste threatens the sustainability of global food systems, with fruits and vegetables representing the largest share. A significant share of this waste stems from fruit and vegetable parts perceived as inedible, where culturally sensitive barriers to their consumption arise. This study explored consumers' perception of edibility and self-reported consumption of various fruit and vegetable parts in Uruguay. An online study with 531 participants used images to assess perceived edibility; respondents indicated reasons for non-consumption or described typical preparation methods. Although most participants recognized parts such as peels, stems, and seeds as edible, a relevant proportion did not consume them regularly. Reported barriers included safety concerns, sensory characteristics, and ingrained habits. In contrast, participants who consumed these parts identified various preparation methods and culinary uses that could support the repurposing of commonly discarded edible parts.

The objective of this work is to demonstrate if the hexaprenyl pyrophosphate synthetase Coq1p might be involved in monoterpenes synthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, although its currently known function in yeast is to catalyze the first step in ubiquinone biosynthesis. However, in a BY4743 laboratory strain, the presence of an empty plasmid in a chemically defined grape juice medium results in a statistically significant increase of linalool, (E)-nerolidol and (E,E)-farnesol. When COQ1 is overexpressed from a plasmid, the levels of the volatile isoprenoids are further increased. Furthermore, overexpression of COQ1 in the same genetic context but with a mutated farnesyl pyrophosphate synthetase (erg20 mutation K197E), results in statistically significant higher levels of linalool (above 750 μg/L), geraniol, α-terpineol, and the sesquiterpenes, farnesol and nerolidol (total concentration of volatile isoprenoids surpasses 1300 μg/L). We show that the levels of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes that S. cerevisiae can produce, in the absence of plant genes, depend on the composition of the medium and the genetic context. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest level of linalool produced by S. cerevisiae up to now. Further research will be needed for understanding how COQ1 and the medium composition might interact to increase flavor complexity of fermented beverages.

In an attempt to isolate the superoxide dismutase (SOD) gene from the anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfoarculus baarsii, a DNA fragment was isolated which functionally complemented an Escherichia coli mutant (sodA sodB) deficient in cytoplasmic SODs. This region carries two open reading frames with sequences which are very similar to that of the rbo-rub operon from Desulfovibrio vulgaris. Independent expression of the rbo and rub genes from ptac showed that expression of rbo was responsible for the observed phenotype. rbo overexpression suppressed all deleterious effects of SOD deficiency in E. coli, including inactivation by superoxide of enzymes containing 4Fe-4S clusters and DNA damage produced via the superoxide-enhanced Fenton reaction. Thus, rbo restored to the sodA sodB mutant the ability to grow on minimal medium without the addition of branched amino acids, and growth on gluconate and succinate carbon sources was no longer impaired. The spontaneous mutation rate, which is elevated in SOD-deficient mutants, returned to the wild-type level in the presence of Rbo, which also restored aerobic viability of sodA sodB recA mutants. Rbo from Desulfovibrio vulgaris, but not Desulfovibrio gigas desulforedoxin, which corresponds to the NH2-terminal domain of Rbo, complemented sod mutants. The physiological role of Rbo in sulfate-reducing bacteria is unknown. In E. coli, Rbo may permit the bacterium to avoid superoxide stress by maintaining functional (reduced) superoxide sensitive 4Fe-4S clusters. It would thereby restore enzyme activities and prevent the release of iron that occurs after cluster degradation and presumably leads to DNA damage.

A summary of the resource.
Inspired by diverse marine bioactive compounds, the principle of molecular hybridization was applied to produce a series of new compounds combining diverse heterocyclic systems (oxa/thiazoles and tetrahydropyrans) via a triazole ring, attempting to increase the activity of individual building blocks. These new compounds exhibit a highly interesting antiproliferative activity against different human tumour cells and good selectivity when compared to normal cells. The formation of reactive oxygen species and the interaction with P-gp were also evaluated for the lead compounds.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Three novel neutral complexes containing the [ReO]3+ core have been prepared starting from K2ReBr6. Complexes with general formula [ReO(OCH3)(ox)(L)] (ox=oxalate; L=2,2′-bipyridine (bipy), 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) or cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene (dppee)) have been obtained and characterized. The molecular structures of [ReO(OCH3)(ox)(bipy)] and [ReO(OCH3)(ox)(dppe)] have been determined of single-crystal X-ray analysis. The structure of the complexes consists of a six-coordinated rhenium atom bonded to two trans-oxygen atoms, one of the [ReO]3+ core and one from a methoxy group. One oxalate ligand and a neutral diamine or diphosphine make the equatorial plane.

A summary of the resource.
The Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen [3+2] cycloaddition is the basis of click chemistry to synthesize triazole derivatives by coupling azides with ethynyl blocks. In the development of new compounds inspired by bioactive natural products, the synthesis of new oxazole building blocks containing azide moiety and coupling them with aromatic alkynes via triazole linker is described. These oxazole building blocks are synthesized using amino acids as chiral and inexpensive starting materials. Using this approach, 16 new triazole-oxazole hybrids were synthesized.
