A summary of the resource.
The optical properties and the geometric characteristics of multivacancy graphene quantum dots systems are studied using Density Functional Theory calculations, in a systematic way, in relation to the number of carbon atoms extracted and the relative configurations that could be present in the cluster. The way to characterize these configurations was using the complementary figure model -i.e. the figure formed by the carbon atoms extracted in order that the vacancy could be created-. The number of pentagonal or square figures formed after structure optimization, as well as their relative location, is found to be very relevant to determine the curvature level of the graphene quantum dot, but the occurrence of higher order cycles have a non-negligible role and cannot be ruled out. However, this occurrence is much dependent on the specific multivacancy to be studied and prevents to reach more accurate models that could allow the prediction of the magnitude of the curvature. We found unexpected instability in dendritic-like vacancies and we suggest that the non-periodic character of the graphene quantum dot, in contrast to graphene, would prevent such vacancies to be relaxed in a higher extension, causing this kind of systems to be less stable than, for example, zigzag complementary figures systems.

In this report, we present the synthesis of few layer MoS2 and polyaniline/MoS2 nanocomposites with a complete structural characterization by atomic force microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy followed by AC impedance spectroscopy and thermoelectric characterizations. Our structural studies revealed that the intercalation of MoS2 nanosheets into polyaniline fibers produces a decrease in the MoS2 interlayer distance and a slight increase in the degree of order of the nanocomposites. In addition, an increment in the polaron Raman signature was observed with the addition of MoS2 nanosheets into polyaniline nanocomposites in agreement with the enhancement of the electrical conductivity, i.e. up to ~ 2.5 S cm−1. The addition of low amounts of MoS2 also lead to an increment of the seebeck coefficient (up to 5.3 µV K−1) and power factor (up to 0.0070 µV m−1 K−2). This report showed excellent synergistic effect between PANI and MoS2 nanosheets which could be of great importance for future applications of these nanocomposites, mainly as thermoelectric materials.

The structure, microstructure and resistivity of three bulk samples with different compositions corresponding to the (La-Sr)1.55(Nd-Ce)0.45CuO4 series, were studied. As the previously studied undoped La1.55Nd0.45CuO4 system, these three compositions are biphasic, with orthorhombic T and tetragonal T' phases in two cases, as main and secondary phases, with the exception of La1.4Sr0.15Nd0.4Ce0.05CuO4, with a secondary T* phase instead of the T' one. Commensurate superstructures are present in La1.5Sr0.05Nd0.43Ce0.02CuO4. All the samples behave as semiconductor at low temperatures, with a metal insulator transition temperature in the 50–100 K range; a second transition temperature at 274 K, can be seen for La1.5Sr0.05Nd0.4Ce0.05CuO4. An improvement in electrical conductivity have been found with increasing doping, independently of the nature of the dopant agent −hole or electron-. No superconducting transitions have been detected.

Ab-initio calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) have been performed to study systems where a first row transition metal atom is embedded in a rippled graphene due to the existence of an 8-order multivacancy. In addition to these cases, also the inclusion of a zinc atom, with a 3d10 electron configuration, was also studied. Structural distortions and magnetic response for each system were studied. A correlation was found for the magnitude of the rippling and the distortion in the vacancy. Variation in the trends was found for Cu and Zn cases, which were explained on the basis of the filling of the 3dx2-y2 orbital. All the systems exhibit lower magnetic moment in comparison to the metal-less system. The quenching of the magnetic moment due to the carbon atoms in the vacancy is observed for Sc and Cu.

Bees are widely recognized as biomonitors of the environment. However, simple, low cost indicators based on bee activities (other than mortality) that can be used to monitor agroecosystems' environmental status have not been reported yet. Biological and chemical indicators were evaluated using Support Vector Machine (SVM) models. The objective was to classify environments into the categories of affected and non (or minimally) affected by pesticides presence. SVM models based on simple population and brood area estimations provided 57% accuracy in classifications. Models based on variables constructed using chemical analysis results (the number of pesticides detected in each sample; the total sum of toxic units, related to bees and mammals; and the sum of field Environmental Impact Quotient, EIQ, of each detected pesticide) provided 100% accuracy in classifications. This fact can be used to obtain biological indicators from a wide number of sites and apply the SVM model to indicate risky seasons and ecosystems where further chemical indicators should be studied. As the input variables are totally explicit and can be changed or updated, the approach followed in this study using SVM provides a stable basis to improve the development of indicators for agricultural production systems biomonitoring. Abstract
A summary of the resource.
We report a new method for efficient and rapid synthesis of HYNIC-hydrazone derivatives using microwaveassisted solid-phase. In comparison to the conventional heating procedure, microwave irradiation considerably accelerated the formation of HYNIC analogues. The synthesis time and efforts are significantly reduced in the present method, without side product formation. We proved that the HYNIC-hydrazone clustering can be directly labeled with technetium without exposing the free hydrazine group. Therefore, this is a useful tool to obtain HYNIC-bioconjugates for use in 99mTc radiochemistry

The aim of the present report is to show the synergistic effect of conducting polyaniline and manganite nanoparticles on the low field magnetoresistance response. We specially focused on the role of the conducting polyaniline interphase in a broad range of temperatures and low applied magnetic fields. Our results showed an increment on the electrical conductivity and enhancement on the magnetoresistance for lower amounts of conducting polyaniline additions with respect to the manganite unloaded samples. We also found that close to room temperature, the changes in magnetoresistance are mostly due to an increment of the spin polarization and spin disorder due to the presence of polyaniline interphase. However, at intermediate temperatures the polyaniline interphase intrinsic magnetoresistance showed an additional contribution to the total negative magnetoresistance response. These results, suggest that conducting polymer interphase shows both passive and active roles in the enhancement of the low field magnetoresistance of inorganic-organic nanocomposites.

A summary of the resource.
The activity of human transglutaminase 2 (TG2), which forms protein cross-links between glutamine and lysine residues, is controlled by an allosteric disulfide bond. However, the mechanism by which this bond is formed, like many systems regulated by oxidative cysteine modifications, was not clear. A new study from Khosla and colleagues shows that TG2 is oxidatively inactivated by the protein disulfide isomerase ERp57, providing the first example of a defined and reversible protein-controlled redox switch and pointing to new strategies to inhibit undesirable TG2 activity in pathological states.

Time orientation can influence health-related behaviors, including food consumption. The aim of the present work was to study the influence of time orientation on food choice, using cookie labels as case study. A choice-conjoint task was designed using labels differing in type of cookie (chocolate chips vs. granola), front-of-pack nutrition information (nutritional warnings vs. Facts Up Front system) and nutritional claim (no claim vs. “0% cholesterol. 0% trans fat”). An online study was conducted, in which 155 participants evaluated 8 pairs of cookie labels and selected the one they would buy if they were in the supermarket. Then, they were asked to complete a consideration of future consequences scale (CFC) adapted to eating habits, as well as a questionnaire about socio-demographic characteristics. Time orientation influenced participants' choices of cookies labels; particularly the importance attached to type of cookie. Participants with greater consideration of future consequences preferred the granola cookies, associated with health, while those who prioritized immediate consequences preferred chocolate chip cookies. In addition, nutritional warnings discouraged choice regardless of participants' time orientation. Results from the present work provide additional evidence of the influence of time preferences on food choices and suggest that strategies to stimulate and generate a more future-oriented perspective on eating habits could contribute to more healthful food choices.

A summary of the resource.
Supercritical fluid extraction with carbon dioxide has been demonstrated to be an attractive method to apply to different processes involved in the food industry due to several advantages when it is compared with conventional organic solvents. Supercritical CO2 extracts from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), boldo (Peumus boldus), cedron (Aloysia citrodora), congorosa (Maytenus ilicifolia), yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) and pitanga (Eugenia uniflora) were obtained at different extraction conditions; their antioxidant effect was studied and compared with that obtained by traditional solvent maceration methods and with that shown by different common synthetic antioxidants. Additionally, antibacterial activity of extracts from the different herbs obtained was determined against different microorganisms. Supercritical extracts from these herbs were efficient in stabilizing sunflower oil; thus, they could represent a valuable natural alternative to synthetic antioxidants. Herbal extracts prove to be a source of compounds with antibacterial activity, with promising applications in the control of microbial deterioration of food.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Crude extract (CE) from pulp of Bromelia antiacantha Bertol. mature fruit, contains at least 3 cysteine proteases with proteolytic activity. By single step cation exchange chromatography (Hi-trap SP-HP) of partially purified CE, the protease with the lowest pI, Antiacanthain A (AntA), was isolated. It showed maximum activity at pH9, and 75% of remaining activity was maintained over a wide pH range (pH6-10). The AntA activity exhibits a constant increase up to 70°C. Maintains almost 100% of its activity at 45 at pH6 and 9. A 60% of AntA was active by titration with specific inhibitor, E64. Amidasic activity was studied with pyroglutamyl-phenyl-leucyl-paranitroaniline (PFLNA) substrate having higher AntA catalytic efficiency of (kcat/Km=470s-1M-1) relative to stem bromelain (kcat/Km=305s-1M-1). Esterase activity using p-nitrophenyl esters of N-α-CBZ-l-Lysine (z-L-LysONp) showed a 10-fold higher catalytic efficiency for AntA (kcat/Km=6376s-1M-1) relative to stem bromelain (kcat/Km=688s-1M-1). Incubation with 8M Urea did not affect AntA activity and remained unchanged for 18h, with 6M GndHCl resulted in a 41% decrease in activity after 30min incubation, maintained this activity 18h. AntA exhibits high sequence identity with proteases of the Bromeliaceae family.

A summary of the resource.
Pure and Ta-doped ZnO were prepared by the sol-gel method in acetic medium using different annealing temperature treatments. The effects of low Ta doping on the crystallinity and electrical properties of ZnO nanoparticles were analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman, UV–visible, and impedance spectroscopies. We also performed first principles calculations in order to study the predicted changes in the structural, vibrational and electronic properties induced by the inclusion of the impurities, and to complement the experimental measurements. We showed that above thermal treatments at 600 °C the precursor samples take the hexagonal wurtzite ZnO phase with high crystallinity. For the doped samples, we found that the synthesizing method has good Ta doping efficiency of the ZnO host structure. Also, Ta doping substantially decreases the resistivity compared to pure ZnO. These results confirm that Ta impurities can substitute Zn atoms and act as donor impurities in the host semiconductor.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The nutritional composition of the sapucaia nut, cake and shell, the nut and cake minerals content and the lipid profile of the nut oil (fatty acids, tocopherols, phytosterols and triacylglycerols) were determined. The nuts and cake exhibited a high content of lipid (47.9 to 60.8 mg 100 g−1), protein (15.8 to 19.5 mg 100 g−1), dietary fiber (16.5 to 22.6 mg 100 g−1) and provided an excellent source of selenium (26.4 to 46.94 μg g−1). The oil contained a high amount of unsaturated fatty acids (39.7 to 45.4% of oleic and 32.2 to 46.6% of linoleic acids) and presented a high Oxidative Stability Index (8.57–12.95 h) indicating the presence of antioxidant compounds in the oil. The major triacylglycerols in the sapucaia oil were LLO, PLO, LOO, POO, OOO, PLL and LLL. The main bioactive lipids identified in the oil were γ-tocopherol (19.2 to 28.5 mg 100 g−1) and β-sitosterol (92.8 to 194 mg 100 g−1). The results showed that the sapucaia nut and its by-products are a promising natural source of bioactive and nutritional compounds and when present in the diet can contribute to the maintenance of human health. In addition, the nut and by-product represents a promising raw material for the food industry.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has provided advice on the long-term storage and stability of samples collected in the context of chemical weapons investigations. The information they compiled and reviewed is beneficial to all laboratories that carry out analysis of samples related to chemical warfare agents and is described herein. The preparation of this report was undertaken on request from the OPCW Director-General. The main degradation products for chemicals on the Schedules in the Annex on Chemicals of the Chemical Weapons Convention are tabulated. The expertise of the 25 scientists comprising the SAB, a review of the scientific literature on environmental and biomedical sample analysis, and answers to a questionnaire from chemists of nine OPCW Designated Laboratories, were drawn upon to provide the advice. Ten recommendations to ensure the long-term storage and stability of samples collected in relation to the potential use of chemical weapons were provided and are repeated here for the consideration of all laboratories worldwide.
