Recent advances in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) have led to the development of low-field benchtop NMR systems with improved sensitivity and resolution suitable for use in research and quality-control laboratories. Compared to their high-resolution counterparts, their lower purchase and running costs make them a good alternative for routine use. In this article, we show the adaptation of a method for predicting the consumer acceptability of mandarins, originally reported using a high-field 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, to benchtop 60 MHz NMR systems. Our findings reveal that both instruments yield comparable results regarding sugar and citric acid levels, leading to the development of virtually identical predictive linear models. However, the lower cost of benchtop NMR systems would allow cultivators to implement this chemometric-based method as an additional tool for the selection of new cultivars.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
University students’ academic achievement measured by means of academic progress is modeled through linear and logistic regression, employing prior achievement and demographic factors as predictors. The main aim of the present paper is to compare results yielded by both statistical procedures, in order to identify the most suitable approach in terms of goodness of fit and predictive power. Grades awarded in basic scientific courses and demographic variables were entered into the models at the first step. Two hypotheses are proposed: (a) Grades in basic courses as well as demographic factors are directly related to academic progress, and (b) Logistic regression is more appropriate than linear regression due to its higher predictive power. Results partially confirm the first prediction, as grades are positively related to progress. However, not all demographic factors considered proved to be good predictors. With regard to the second hypothesis, logistic regression was shown to be a better approach than linear regression, yielding more stable estimates with regard to the presence of ill-fitting patterns.<br /><br />

A summary of the resource.
The objective of this study was to predict chloroform formation resulting from the process of disinfecting water, particularly trihalomethane which is most frequently produced. A statistical model was used which included repeated measurements of water parameters used for monitoring water quality at 51 sites covering the municipal water system of Montevideo. Samples were taken considering different seasons from June 2009 to July 2011 in Montevideo. Total samples (n = 330) were analytically studied using the headspace-gas chromatography method coupled with mass spectrometry. Chloroform was the dependent variable and the covariables were pH, temperature, free chlorine, and total chlorine. A Tobit analysis with an unstructured correlation matrix was performed, and a significant interaction was found between pH and free chlorine for the prediction of chloroform formation. We concluded that parameters for the continuous control of water quality for consumption can be used to predict the levels of chloroform that may be present. Given the large measurement to variability found in the repeated measurements, the use of averages that include more than one season is not recommended to determine the degree of compliance with acceptable levels established by norms.

Herbivorous insects assess and choose their potential host plants based on traits that may correlate with host suitability or quality. These traits may operate as cues for better resources, noxious chemicals, or fewer competitors and enemies. Interac tions between insects and their host plants may also be modulated by the nutritional value of the plant, by plant chemical stimuli, or by physical traits such as trichomes. Diferences in chemical or physical cues among plants may convey informa tion about diet suitability. Several studies have addressed the topic of diferences in plant traits between host and non-host plants; fewer have addressed these diferences among potential host plants. We have studied the efect of chemical and physi cal plant traits on the feeding and oviposition preferences of the oligophagous herbivore Epilachna paenulata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and two of its host plants, Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita moschata (Cucurbitaceae). We frst typifed the volatile and non-volatile chemical profles and the trichome distribution of the plants. Then, using behavioral assays, we evaluated feeding and oviposition preferences of E. paenulata. Further, to assess a correlation between oviposition prefer ences and ofspring survival, we measured larval performance as indicated by survival, mass, and time to complete each instar. Female longevity in both Cucurbita host plants was also evaluated. Our results show that the congeneric plants bear diferences in their chemical profles, including volatile organic compounds, leaf waxes, and leaf parenchyma metabolites. Trichome abundance was also diferent, with C. maxima presenting fewer hairs. Epilachna paenulata females laid signif cantly more eggs in C. maxima, regardless of the plant they were raised as larvae. Female longevity on C. maxima was higher, but larval performance showed no diference between both plants.The proximate causes mediating female oviposition preferences may then involve trichome abundance, oviposition deterrents, toxic substances, or a combination of these factors.

The color of 30 honey samples, both from unifloral and multifloral origin, was characterized using Pfund scale and CIE L*a*b* tristimulus method. A panel of 140 consumers evaluated the color acceptability of the samples using a 9-point structured scale. The color of the samples was differentiated (P < 0.001) by both instrumental methods, which confirms the validity of using them to characterize the color of honey. Consumers showed highly significant different degrees of liking for the color of the evaluated honeys. Two clusters (cluster 2 and cluster 3) with different preference patterns were identified; one liked intermediate-colored honeys, and the other preferred dark reddish honeys. External preference mapping was used to model color acceptability for consumers in each cluster using the first two principal components of the principal component analysis of the instrumental color data.

In herbivorous insects, the preference–performance hypothesis predicts that females will choose to oviposit on plants that maximize offspring development. Although there is evidence to support this hypothesis, several studies have shown that it does not always apply. Among the factors that may modulate the preference–performance relationship, diet breadth is a significant one, although no correlation has been found for monophagous insects. More case studies are needed, as more restricted diets are expected to require better discrimination ability. In this study, we explored the preference–performance linkage in a monophagous sawfly, Tequus schrottkyi (Konow) (Hymenoptera: Pergidae), which feeds as larva on the wild potato Solanum commersonii Dunal (Solanaceae). We used the cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum L., as an alternative host plant for our experiments. Performance was evaluated from newly emerged larvae until adult emergence, raising individual larvae on potted plants or excised leaves. Female oviposition preference was studied in two‐choice bioassays, in which individual females were offered whole plants of S. commersonii and S. tuberosum. The nutritional quality of the plants was assessed by measuring protein, non‐structural carbohydrate, and water contents. The offspring performed better on their host plant, S. commersonii, resulting in more larvae completing their development to the adult stage. Moreover, the larvae developed faster and their cocoon weighed more when they were raised on their host plant. The females oviposited almost exclusively on S. commersonii, regardless of their previous food plant. The protein and non‐structural carbohydrate contents did not differ between the plants, whereas water content was higher in the non‐preferred S. tuberosum. The differences in water content and in secondary metabolites, which have been analyzed in a previous study, may play a role in female preference and offspring performance. The results are discussed within the framework of the preference–performance hypothesis and the chemical ecology of insect–plant interactions.

Sheep hydatid cyst fluid (SHCF) was fractionated on Sephacryl HR S-200 and the anticomplementary activity (α-C activity) determined in the fractions obtained; 67% of total α-C activity of SHCF was recovered in the void volume fraction (SHCF-I) which contained 61% of SHCF carbohydrates. The bulk of the activity of SHCF-I was eluted by FPLC chromatofocusing on Mono P HR at pH 5.9. After heating at 100°C for 15 min, SHCF and SHCF-I conserved 74 and 54%, respectively of their α-C activity. In addition, 37 and 11% of SHCF and SHCF-I α-C activity, respectively bound to Protein A. Components not bound to Protein A (SHCFPA and SHCF-IPA) were fractionated on Con A-Sepharose; 71 and 65%, respectively of their total α-C activity was retained by this lectin indicating the presence of α-D mannoside and α-D glucoside residues in the active molecules. Our results suggest that SHCF could contain two classes of α-C components: immune complexes and thermoresistant molecules with high carbohydrate content.

Cannabis use during pregnancy has recently become an important concern due to its increasing trend and association with neurodevelopmental alterations of exposed children. Although inhalation is the primary route of cannabis consumption in humans, few studies replicated this route in preclinical models of prenatal exposure. This study aimed to analyze the effects of chronic prenatal exposure to vaporized cannabis (PEVC) on hippocampal neurodevelopment, functionality, and learning and memory processes. Using a commercially available high-potency cannabis strain (THC 14.7%), pregnant rats were exposed to cannabis vapor from gestational day 8 to 21. A combination of primary hippocampal cultures, electrophysiological studies in slices, and behavioral tests was employed to assess the impact of PEVC. We found that PEVC induced presynaptic remodeling of hippocampal neurons in offspring under both basal and activity-dependent conditions by increasing synaptic vGlut1 abundance and the total recycling pool of synaptic vesicles. Chronic PEVC also induced a downregulation of CB1R at glutamatergic and GABAergic synapses. Additionally, an increase in axonal recruitment and synaptic efficacy was observed at hippocampal CA1 synapses of juvenile offspring. Moreover, long-lasting cognitive impairments were identified during adolescence, including deficits in spatial memory in male and female offspring. In summary, these findings demonstrate that exposure to high-potency cannabis vapor during pregnancy leads to significant changes in synaptic remodeling and efficacy, axonal recruitment, and long-term cognitive consequences in offspring.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) involves a neurodegenerative process that has not yet been prevented, reversed, or stopped. Continuing with the search for natural pharmacological treatments, flavonoids are a family of compounds with proven neuroprotective effects and multi-targeting behavior. The American genus Dalea L. (Fabaceae) is an important source of bioactive flavonoids. In this opportunity, we tested the neuroprotective potential of three prenylated flavanones isolated from Dalea species in a new in vitro pre-clinical AD model previously developed by us. Our approach consisted in exposing neural cells to conditioned media (3xTg-AD ACM) from neurotoxic astrocytes derived from hippocampi and cortices of old 3xTg-AD mice, mimicking a local neurodegenerative microenvironment. Flavanone 1 and 3 showed a neuroprotective effect against 3xTg-AD ACM, being 1 more active than 3. The structural requirements to afford neuroprotective activity in this model are a 5’-dimethylallyl and 4’-hydroxy at the B ring. In order to search the mechanistic performance of the most active flavanone, we focus on the flavonoid-mediated regulation of GSK-3β-mediated tau phosphorylation previously reported. Flavanone 1 treatment decreased the rise of hyperphosphorylated tau protein neuronal levels induced after 3xTg- AD ACM exposure and inhibited the activity of GSK-3β. Finally, direct exposure of these neurotoxic 3xTg-AD astrocytes to flavanone 1 resulted in toxicity to these cells and reduced the neurotoxicity of 3xTg-AD ACM as well. Our results allow us to present compound 1 as a natural prenylated flavanone that could be used as a precursor to development and design of future drug therapies for AD.

Within the flavonoid class of natural products the prenylated sub-class is quite rich in structural variety and pharmacological activity. In the last twenty years a huge number of new structures has been reported, mostly from Leguminosae and Moraceae, with few coming from other genera. The presence, in different forms, of the isoprenoid chain can lead to impressive changes in biological activity, mostly attributed to an increased affinity for biological membranes and to an improved interaction with proteins. Molecules, such as xanthohumol and sophoraflavanone G, while being very structurally simple, show numerous pharmacological applications and are ideal candidates for SAR aimed to the discovery of new drugs.

Prenylated flavanones are a family of compounds with an important biological potential. Previously, anti tyrosinase activity, acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity, and neuroprotective effects of several prenyl flava nones isolated from different American Dalea genus species were reported. The biological potency of these kinds of compounds, together with the particularity of their chemical structures, encouraged us to investigate them for in vitro and in silico anti-xanthine oxidase activity. So, five prenyl-flavanones obtained from different Dalea sp (Dalea elegans, Dalea boliviana, and Dalea pazensis) were studied and the relationships between the structure of these prenyl-flavanones and their inhibitory activity were evaluated. Molecular docking studies were performed in order to propose the binding mode of the most active natural compound. 2′,4′-dihydroxy-5′-(1‴,1‴-dimethy lallyl)-8-prenylpinocembrin (1) was the most active in this series showing an IC50 of 0.26 ± 0.07 µM comparable with the reference inhibitor, allopurinol. The presence of 5,7,2′,4′-tetrahydroxy substitution, accompanied by a prenyl group at 8-position in the A-ring, and a 5′ (1‴,1‴-dimethylallyl) were important to present a xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. This fact was confirmed with molecular docking studies showing relevant interactions of 1 with the residues of the catalytic site of xanthine oxidase, and a binding energy of − 7.3297 kcal mol− 1 . These results contributed not only to understanding the binding mode but also to validating the in vitro results. The obtained findings lead us to propose these prenyl-flavanones as lead compounds for the design and devel opment of novel xanthine oxidase inhibitors for the treatment of diseases in which this enzyme is involved.

A summary of the resource.
In contrast with the parent class of flavonoids, the distribution of the isoflavonoid class in the plant kingdom is relatively limited, probably owing to the sporadic occurrence of isoflavone synthase. Isoflavonoids have been mostly found in the subfamily Fabaceae/Papilionoideae of the Leguminosae family. Isoprenoid-substituted (also called complex) isoflavonoids are expressed from a smaller number of plants, as a result of the similarly restricted distribution of prenyltransferases (PT-ase). After the reviews of Tanara & Ibrahim (1995), Boland & Donnelly (1997), the Handbook of Flavonoids by Harborne & C (Handbook of Flavonoids, 1999), and the paper by Harborne and Williams (2000) few other reports concern the distribution and the biological activity of complex isoflavonoids, except a list of isoflavonoids produced from non leguminous plants. This review deals with an update of the literature on isoprenylated isoflavonoids in the years 1995-2006 and is focused on the following highlights. 1. Natural sources of complex isoflavonoids (2000-2006) 2. Chemical structure variety: new entries (2000-2006) 3. Biological activities and a possible structure-activity relationship (1995-2006) 4. In vitro production and microbial metabolism (1995-2006)
