A summary of the resource.
A polymeric heterometallic compound [{Mn(H2O)6} {MnCe(oda)3}2]·xH2O containing manganese(II) and cerium (III) cations bridged by carboxylate groups of oxydiacetate (oda) is presented. It was prepared by direct reaction of oda in aqueous solution with stoichiometric amounts of Mn(II) and Ce (III). The structure of the complex exhibits a highly ordered 3D structure with [MnCe(oda)3]- as building blocks. The charge is balanced with [Mn(H2O)6]2+ ions which occupy the holes of the anionic framework. The complex is thermally stable up to 230° C.

Polarized sensory positioning (PSP) is a novel methodology for sensory characterization which is based on the comparison among samples and a set of reference products, called poles. Its main advantage over other holistic methodologies is that results from different sessions can be compared. This is particularly useful when working with samples with persistent flavours, when evaluating a large number of samples over a long period of time, or during quality control. Although the key step of this methodology is the selection of the products to be considered as poles, no studies have been published addressing this issue. In this context, the aim of the present work was to contribute to bridging this gap by studying the influence of the poles on results from sensory characterization of two widely different products (make-up foundations and orange-flavoured powdered drinks) using Polarized Sensory Positioning with consumers. Results from both studies provided preliminary evidence about the stability of sensory spaces obtained with different set of poles (RV coefficients higher than 0.908). However, differences in conclusions regarding similarities and differences among samples were identified between the sets of poles in both studies, suggesting the need to carefully select stable poles for PSP tasks.

Holistic methodologies such as Projective Mapping and sorting have gained popularity for sensory characterization of products with both trained assessors and consumers. One of their main disadvantage is that all samples should be simultaneously evaluated in the same session. An alternative to overcome this limitation is to evaluate samples by comparing them with a fixed set of products, as proposed in Polarized Sensory Positioning (PSP). In the present work a combination of Projective Mapping and Polarized Sensory Positioning, called polarized Projective Mapping (PPM), is presented and compared with the two original ways of performing PSP (scale based and triadic-PSP), in terms of conclusions regarding differences between samples and difficulty for consumers. Nine orange-flavored powdered drink samples (including one blind repeated sample) were evaluated by three groups of 45 consumers using PSP, triadic-PSP and PPM using a between-subjects design. Although the three methodologies provided similar sensory spaces, some differences were identified in terms of discriminative ability, conclusions regarding similarities between samples and perceived difficulty. Polarized Projective Mapping seems to be an interesting approach that combines the advantages of Polarized Sensory Positioning and the holistic character of Projective Mapping, providing the possibility of comparing samples evaluated in different sessions.

The myo-inositol phosphates (InsPs) are specific signalling metabolites ubiquitous in eukaryotic cells. Although Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 is the second most abundant member of the InsPs family, its certain biological roles are far from being elucidated, in part due to the large number of species formed by Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 in the presence of metal ions. In light of this, we have strived in the past to make a complete and at the same time “biological-user-friendly” description of the Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 chemistry with mono and multivalent cations. In this work we expand these studies focusing on the inframolecular aspects of its protonation equilibria and the microscopic details of its coordination behaviour towards biologically relevant metal ions. We present here a systematic study of the Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5 intrinsic acid–base processes, in a non-interacting medium, and over a wide pH range, analyzing the 31P NMR curves by means of a model based on the Cluster Expansion Method. In addition, we have used a computational approach to analyse the energetic and structural features of the protonation and conformational changes of Ins(1,3,4,5,6)P5, and how they are influenced by the presence of two physiologically relevant cations, Na+ and Mg2+.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In the search for new metal-based drugs against diseases produced by trypanosomatid parasites, four organoruthenium(II) compounds [Ru2(p-cymene)2(L)2] X2, where L are bioactive 5-nitrofuryl-containing thiosemicarbazones and X=Cl or PF6, had been previously obtained. These compounds had shown activity on Trypanosoma brucei, the etiological agent of African trypanosomiasis. Because of genomic similarities between trypanosomatides, these ruthenium compounds were evaluated, in the current work, on Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite responsible of American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease). Two of them showed significant in vitro growth inhibition activity against the infective trypomastigote form of T. cruzi (Dm28c clone, IC50=11.69 and 59.42 μM for [Ru2(p-cymene)2(L4)2]Cl2 and [Ru2(p-cymene)2(L1)2]Cl2, respectively, where HL4=5- nitrofuryl-N-phenylthiosemicarbazone and HL1=5- nitrofurylthiosemicarbazone), showing fairly good selectivities toward trypanosomes with respect to mammalian cells (J774 murine macrophages). Moreover, [Ru2 (p-cymene)2(L2)2]Cl2, where HL2=5-nitrofuryl-Nmethylthiosemicarbazone, was synthesized in order to evaluate the effect of improved solubility on biological behavior. This new chloride salt showed higher activity against T. cruzi than that of the previously synthesized hexafluorophosphate one (Dm28c clone, IC50=14.30 μM for the former and 231.3 μM for the latter). Food labels play a key role in attracting consumers’ attention and providing information that could largely influence their purchase decisions. The aim of the present work was to evaluate how consumers acquire information from food labels using eye-tracking measures. Fifty-three consumers completed two tasks in which they evaluated perceived healthfulness of the products and willingness to purchase by looking at three unknown labels of three different products (mayonnaise, pan bread and yogurt). Participants’ eye movements were recorded using an eye tracker while evaluating the labels. Results showed that in order to evaluate their willingness to purchase and perceived healthfulness of unknown food labels, consumers directed their attention to selected areas, searching for specific information such as brand, ingredients, nutritional information and the image on the label, regardless of type of product and label design

Para nuestro ambiente científico es de utilidad no sólo el aprendizaje de nuevas técnicas por parte de los becarios sino también fundamentalmente la experiencia que el profesional recoge en sus estudios. Tiene la oportunidad de observar la organización, los principios y funcionamiento de Universidades e instituciones establecidas desde hace siglos y de transplantar aquello que es digno de imitación y adaptación a nuestro ambiente. Por este motivo resumo algunas de las ideas y conceptos relacionados con el trabajo de investigación, el estudio universitario, su orientación, sus métodos y sus fines: esperando, puede ser de alguna utilidad, la experiencia recogida durante los estudios realizados en Europa durante los años 1955/58 en ese sentido.

The glycobiology of the cestodes, a class of parasitic flatworms,<br />is still largely unexplored. An important cestode<br />species is Echinococcus granulosus, the tissue-dwelling<br />larval stage of which causes hydatid disease. The E. granulosus<br />larva is protected from the host by a massive<br />mucin-based extracellular matrix termed laminated layer<br />(LL). We previously reported (Biochemistry 48:11678,<br />2009) the molecular structure of the most abundant LL<br />O-glycans, comprising up to six monosaccharide residues.<br />These are based on Cores 1 and 2, in cases elongated by a<br />chain of Galpβ1-3 residues, which can be capped by<br />Galpα1-4. In addition, the Core 2 GlcNAcp residue can<br />be decorated with the Galpα1-4Galpβ1-4 disaccharide.<br />Larger glycans also detected contained additional HexNAc<br />residues that could not be explained by the structural repertoire<br />described above. In this work, we elucidate, by<br />mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance<br />(NMR), six additional glycans from the E. granulosus LL<br />between six and eight residues in size. Their structures are<br />related to those already described but in cases bear GlcNAcpβ1-6 or Galpα1-4Galpβ1-4GlcNAcpβ1-6 as ramifications<br />on the core Galpβ1-3 residue. We also obtained<br />evidence that noncore Galpβ1-3 residues can be similarly<br />ramified. Thus, the new motif together with the previous<br />information may explain all the glycan compositions<br />detected in the LL by MS. In addition, we show that the<br />anti-Echinococcus monoclonal antibody E492 (Parasite<br />Immunol 21:141, 1999) recognizes Galpα1-4Galpβ1-<br />4GlcNAcp (the blood P1-antigen motif). This explains the<br />antibody’s reactivity with a range of Echinococcus tissues,<br />as the P1-motif is also carried on non-LL N-glycans and<br />glycolipids from this genus.<br />

Consumer perception of food products is a very complex phenomenon that is influenced by a wide range of characteristics. In particular, consumer perception of the sensory characteristics of food products can be strongly affected by information and expectations. Thus, the comparison of product characterizations from blind and informed conditions can provide a valuable insight about the impact of information on consumer perception of food products. In this context, the aim of the present work was to present a case study in which the influence of information on results of product characterizations of milk desserts from two methodologies, check-all-that-apply (CATA) questions and sorting, was studied. Six commercial vanilla milk desserts were evaluated under blind and informed conditions by two groups of 50 consumers using CATA questions and sorting. Results showed that information had a small impact on overall liking scores and product characterizations, suggesting that consumers’ perception of the desserts was mainly determined by their sensory characteristics.

Searchingfor newpromisingmetal-based hits against Trypanosoma cruzi andLeishmaniaparasites,two related oxidovanadium(IV) N-acylhydrazone complexes, [VIVO(LASSBio1064-2H)(H2O)], 1, and [VIVO(LASSBio1064- 2H)(phen)]$(H2O), 2, where LASSBio1064¼ (E)-N0-(2-hydroxybenzylidene-4-chlorobenzohydrazide and phen ¼ 1,10-phenanthroline, were synthesized and characterized in the solid state and in solution by elemental analysis, conductimetric measurements and ESI-MS, FTIR, EPR and 51V NMR spectroscopies and were evaluated on T. cruzi and Leishmania major. In addition, their unspecific cytotoxicity was tested against murine macrophages. Furthermore, to provide insight into the possible mechanism of its antiparasitic action, [VO(LASSbio1064-2H)(phen)].(H2O)was tested for its DNA interaction ability on plasmid DNA by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and on CT DNA by using DNAviscosity measurements and fluorescence spectroscopy. Both complexeswere active in vitro against the epimastigote formof T. cruzi (Tulahuen 2 strain) showing IC50 values of the same orderor significantly lower thanthat of the reference trypanosomicidal drug Nifurtimox.However, only the mixed-ligand oxidovanadium(IV) complex 2,which includes phen in its coordination sphere, showed activity on L. major promastigotes with a IC50 value of 22.1 � 0.6 mM. The compounds show low toxicity on mammalian cells (IC50 > 100 mM). DNA interaction studies showed that the mixed-ligand complex is able to interact with this biomolecule probably through an intercalative mode, pointing out at DNA as a potential target in the parasite. The results suggest that [VIVO(LASSBio1064-2H)(phen)]$(H2O) may be a promising compound for further drug development stages

Projective techniques have been increasingly used in marketing and consumer research. Despite their potentialities, few studies have been published comparing results from different techniques in a specific food product. In this context, the aims of this study were to uncover consumer perception and motivations to buy a ready-to-eat-salad using three different projective techniques (word association, completion and Haire’s shopping list), and to compare the results obtained by the three methodologies. The three tasks were completed through online questionnaires by groups of respondents within a sample of 320 consumers. Results from the three methodologies applied in this study revealed that convenience was the main motivation for purchasing ready-to-eat-salads, as expected. However, even though the three methodologies were useful, each of them brought to light consumer perception to a different extent. Word association enabled the elicitation of the largest number of categories, but only positive characteristics of the product were salient. Thus, inferences made from this methodology would differ to a great extent to those made from completion tasks’ results, where many limitations of the product were also relevant. Meanwhile, results from Haire’s shopping list were not as rich as those from the other methodologies, suggesting that it would be more appropriate for products which have a greater impact on consumers’ values and beliefs. Completion tasks combined with pictures provided interesting results since they guided participants to focus on specific aspects of the products but were unstructured enough to allow the projection of consumers’ thoughts and feelings about the product

Temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) methodology was used to study the influence of yoghurt composition on sensory texture and to compare results with those from quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA). Eight yoghurts with different texture characteristics were formulated varying fat, modified starch and gelatine concentration. A trained assessor panel evaluated yoghurt texture using QDA and TDS. TDS provided information about the sequence of attributes that were dominant during consumption. This methodology was useful to characterise yoghurt texture, providing information about the influence of the evaluated formulation variables that was not gathered by QDA; starch did not significantly increase creaminess intensity but it led to an increase in its total dominance. Differences between attribute intensity and dominance were higher for complex texture attributes which were evaluated throughout consumption, such as creaminess and mouth coating.

Nowadays, the research for new and better antimicrobial compounds is an important field due to the increase of immunocompromised patients, the use of invasive medical procedures and extensive surgeries, among others, that can affect the incidence of infections. Another big problem associated is the occurrence of drug-resistant microbial strains that impels a ceaseless search for new antimicrobial agents. In this context, a series of heterocyclic-sulfonamide complexes with Co(II) was synthesized and characterized with the aim of obtaining new antimicrobial compounds. The structural characterization was performed using different spectroscopic methods (UV–Vis, IR, and EPR). In spite of the fact that the general stoichiometry for all the complexes was Co(sulfonamide)2�nH2O, the coordination atoms were different depending on the coordinated sulfonamide. The crystal structure of [Co(sulfamethoxazole)2(H2O)2]�H2O was obtained by X-ray diffraction showing that Co(II) is in a slightly tetragonal distorted octahedron where sulfamethoxazole molecules act as a head-to-tail bridges between two cobalt atoms, forming polymeric chains. Besides, the activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, one of the responsible for tuberculosis, and the cytotoxicity on J774A.1 macrophage cells were evaluated.

As a contribution to the identification of the relevant species for biological activity and the understanding of structure– activity relationships of [VIVO(L-2H)(NN)] antitrypanosomal complexes (NN is a bidentate polypyridyl DNA intercalator; L is a tridentate salicylaldehyde semicarbazone derivative), new [VVO2(L-2H)] complexes and [VIVO(L-2H)(NN)] complexes including bipy or dppz (dipyrido[3,2-a: 2′,3′-c]phenazine) co-ligands are prepared and characterized in the solid state and in solution. Their activity is evaluated on Trypanosoma cruzi. The lipophilicity, as structural descriptor related to bioactivity, of the whole [VIVO(L-2H)(NN)] series is determined. Furthermore, the antiproliferative effect of those new compounds showing activity against T. cruzi is evaluated on the genetically related parasite T. bruceiwith the aimto develop broad spectrumagents. The new[VIVO(L-2H)(dppz)] complexes are about ten to fifteen times more toxic to T. cruzi than the bipy analogues and show quite good in vitro activity on T. brucei brucei. They are shown to interact with DNA, suggesting that this biomolecule may be the parasite target. The stability of the VIVO-complexes in solution is accessed by several techniques. Globally the data suggest that the relevant species for biological activity are the [VIVO(L-2H)(NN)] compounds, their order of activity being dependent on the NN nature, but not much on the substitution on the salicylaldehyde semicarbazone moiety. A parabolic relationship between biological response and lipophilicity (determined as RM = log [(1 / Rf) − 1] by a TLC method) is obtained. From this correlation an optimum RM value, close to 1.44, was found, which may be used as design guide for future development of antitrypanosomal compounds.

A summary of the resource.
The synthesis and structural characterization of the three novel nickel(II) complexes [Ni(OOCPh)2 (mpkoH)2] (1), [Ni(NO3)2(mpkoH)2] (2) and [Ni(mpkoH)3](NO3)2�½H2O (3�½H2O), with mpkoH = methyl(2-pyridyl)ketone oxime is reported. Geometry optimization and population analyses were performed by means of DFT calculations for the previously mentioned compounds as well as for [NiCl2 (mpkoH)2] (4). Electronic UV–vis spectra were also simulated in the TD-DFT framework to assign the origin of the absorption bands and in doing so, to have a clear picture of the absorptive features of the coordination compounds under investigation.

A summary of the resource.
Venous plasma drug concentrations are routinely monitored in order to determine pharmacokinetic parameters or to establish relationships with drug pharmacodynamic and clinical effects. Arterial drug concentration is higher than the respective venous concentration during the period where drug input of the substance predominates, whereas venous drug concentration is higher during the long period where drug elimination becomes the main process. This arterial–venous difference responds to current bioavailability and clearance of the drug-individual systems. Following the vein/artery plasma drug concentration ratio at a non-eliminating organ it is possible to monitor both parameters time by time. This way of following up the pharmacokinetic systems allows us to detect any changes in drug absorption or disposition more efficiently, without the need of a long period of time and regardless the duration of such system modification
