Parasitic illnesses are major causes of human disease and misery worldwide. Among them, both amebiasis and Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasites, Entamoeba histolytica and Trypanosoma cruzi, are responsible for thousands of annual deaths. The lack of safe and effective chemotherapy and/or the appearance of current drug resistance make the development of novel pharmacological tools for their treatment relevant. In this sense, within the framework of the medicinal inorganic chemistry, metal-based drugs appear to be a good alternative to find a pharmacological answer to parasitic diseases. In this work, novel ruthenium complexes [RuCl2(HL)(HPTA)2]Cl2 with HL=bioactive 5-nitrofuryl containing thiosemicarbazones and PTA=1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane have been synthesized and fully characterized. PTA was included as co-ligand in order to modulate complexes aqueous solubility. In fact, obtained complexes were water soluble. Their activity against T. cruzi and E. histolytica was evaluated in vitro. [RuCl2(HL4)(HPTA)2]Cl2 complex, with HL4=N-phenyl-5-nitrofuryl-thiosemicarbazone, was the most active compound against both parasites. In particular, it showed an excellent activity against E. histolytica (half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50)=5.2 μM), even higher than that of the reference drug metronidazole. In addition, this complex turns out to be selective for E. histolytica (selectivity index (SI)>38). The potential mechanism of antiparasitic action of the obtained ruthenium complexes could involve oxidative stress for both parasites. Additionally, complexes could interact with DNA as second potential target by an intercalative-like mode. Obtained results could be considered a contribution in the search for metal compounds that could be active against multiple parasites.

Monodisperse core–shell stable latexes with reactive methylchloride surface functionalities were prepared at two different reaction temperatures. The reaction temperature played an important role in the amount of reactive functional groups. The covalent coupling had an efficiency of more than 50%. Antibodies covalently bound to functionalized polystyrene beads were used to detect corresponding antigens by nephelometry.

A summary of the resource.
Yucca schidigera Roezl. (yucca) is one of the major industrial sources of steroid saponins used as animal and human food additives. This work describes a new, systematic and reproducible three-step method by medium and high-pressure liquid chromatography (under RP, NP and RP conditions), for the isolation and purification of three groups of saponins, which were further purified in six sub-fractions, and finally into twelve individual steroid saponins previously reported in Y. schidigera. In accordance to the increasing applications of yucca extracts, further analytical, biological and physicochemical studies are still required. The presented method is applicable to the preparation of steroids saponins previously reported in commercial extracts of Y. schidigera, both as highly purified mixtures of defined composition, including twelve pure components.

This work aimed to find a rational nutrient feeding strategy for cider vinegar fermentation based on adequate information on the nutritional requirement of acetic acid bacteria. Through single nutrient lack experiment assay, necessary nutrient recipe for Acetobacter pasteurianus CICIM B7003 in acetous fermentation was confirmed. Compounds from the essential nutrient recipe were tested further to find out the key substrates significantly influencing cider vinegar fermentation. The findings showed that aspartate, glutamate, proline and tryptophan should be considered in detail for optimizing nutritional composition of cider. Finally, a nutrient feeding strategy that simultaneously adds proline, glutamate, aspartate and tryptophan to form final concentrations of 0.02 g/L, 0.03 g/L, 0.01 g/L and 0.005 g/L in cider was achieved by orthogonal experiment design. Comparing to the original fermentation, the yield of acetic acid from alcohol reached 93.3% and the concentration of most volatile flavor compounds increased with the rational nutrient feeding strategy.

Organophosphorus insecticides are common pollutants of the citrus oils. Unknown phosphorated compounds, different from organophosphorus pesticides, were detected during GC analyses of citrus oils; the chromatographic profile was similar to a triarylphosphate mixture. Standard mixtures of triarylphosphates were analyzed and mass spectra were obtained; the results showed that the contamination was due to triphenylphosphate and tritolylphosphate isomers essentially. The contaminants were found to probably originate from contact of the oils with plastic materials from which they leached on oil storage.

Herein, we have employed first-principles calculations to investigate the interaction between XY dual-doped graphene (DDG) (X = AL, Si, P, S; Y = B, N, O) and sodium/potassium. The introduction of two dopants alters the adsorption energy (AE) of sodium and potassium with respect to perfect graphene by an average of 0.88 and 0.66 eV, respectively. The systems that display the strongest interactions with the two alkalies assayed are SN and SiB DDG. Although the adsorption energy of sodium on graphene is weaker in comparison to that of potassium, the introduction of these dopants significantly reduces this difference. In effect, in some cases, the AE-K and AE-NA differ by less than 0.05 eV. The protrusion of the 3p dopants out of the graphene plane creates a hole where sodium and potassium can easily be intercalated between two layers of dual-doped graphene. The interlayer distances are reduced by less than 0.4 Å after K intercalation, making the process very favorable. Finally, most importantly, this eminent rise in adsorption energies guarantees exceptional storage capacities at the cost of low doping concentration.

We employ first‐principles DFT calculations to explore the potential use of BeN dual doped graphene (DDG) as an anode material for alkali‐based batteries. The introduction of BeN in graphene raise the adsorption of Li, Na, and K by 1.37 eV (2.23 times), 1.23 eV (2.83 times), and 1.14 eV (2.14 times), respectively. Furthermore, BeN DDG offers a modest energy barrier for alkali atoms studied. Moreover, the alkali atoms have good chemistry with Be and the interaction strength decreases during the migration toward N. Most importantly, the exceptional storage capacity of BeN DDG for Li (~2255 mAh/g), Na (~996 mAh/g), and K (~747 mAh/g) makes it a highly desirable anode material. Additionally, the average open circuit voltage offered for Li (0.66 V), Na (0.33 V), and (K = 1.10 V) is found to be in excellent range. All these outstanding properties provide the possibility of using BeN DDG in future alkali‐based batteries.

We investigate, by means of first‐principles density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the possibility of using hexagonal boron‐arsenide (h‐BAs) as an anode material for alkali‐based batteries. We show that the adsorption strength of alkali atoms (Li, Na, and K) on h‐BAs in comparison with graphene and other related materials changes a little as a function of alkali atom concentration. When the separation between alkali atoms and h‐BAs is less than the critical distance of ~5 Å, the adsorption energy abruptly increases showing fast adsorption without an energy barrier. Furthermore, the low energy barriers of 0.322, 0.187, and 0.0.095 eV for Li, Na, and K, respectively, ensure the fast ionic diffusivities for all the three alkali atoms. Additionally, the addition of these alkali atoms transforms the electronic properties of h‐BAs from semiconducting to metallic, resulting in improved electronic conductivities. Most interestingly, the excellent storage capacities of h‐BAs (~626 mAh/g) for alkali atoms make it a material of similar caliber to that of other popular anode materials. Finally, the average open circuit voltages are calculated and found to be in the desired range. In short, h‐BAs possess every quality that is crucial for an anode material and thus it is interesting to see h‐BAs in alkali‐based battery technologies.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
By means of first-principles calculations, we study the structural, electronic and mechanical properties of the newly synthesized boron–oxygen holey framework (Chem. Comm. 2018, 54, 3971). It has a planar structure formed by B3O3 hexagons, which are joined via strong covalent boron–boron bonds. The six B3O3 units are connected with six-fold symmetry exhibiting a large hole with a surface area of 23 Å2, which is ideal for the adsorption of alkalis. For neutral alkalis, we found that the adsorption energy of potassium is 14 and 12 kcal mol−1 larger than those determined for sodium and lithium, respectively. In contrast, for alkali cations, there is a clear preference for lithium over sodium and potassium. With regard to its electronic properties, it is an insulator with an electronic band gap of 5.3 eV, at the HSE level of theory. We further investigate the effect of strain on the band gap and find it a less efficient technique to tune the electronic properties. The wide optical gap of B3O3 can be utilized in ultraviolet (UV) applications, such as UV photodetectors, etc. Additionally, the 2D elastic modulus of B3O3 (53.9 N m−1) is larger than that of Be3N2, silicene, and germanene. Besides, we also report bilayer and graphite-like bulk B3O3 and furthermore, find that the optoelectronic properties of the bilayer can be tuned with an external electric field. The great tunability of optical properties from UV to the visible range offers a vast range of applications in optoelectronics.

CdTe pure and Bi-doped crystals were grown by the Markov method using an insulating element between the ampoule and the furnace. The numerical simulation performed shows that the presence of a graphite element causes a diminution of the axial temperature gradient, reducing the natural convection inside the growth chamber. This leads to a more stable growth process, improving the crystal quality. Morphological surface studies, Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence mapping, support our prediction about the improved crystal quality when the graphite insulating element is included in the growth system. Its influence on different defects of the crystal is also discussed.

A summary of the resource.
CdTe films were grown onto amorphous substrates by electron beam deposition (EB) and by horizontal and vertical physical vapor deposition (HPVD and VPVD). The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by measuring their electrical resistivity and response to X-rays. A 4-Am-thick layer deposited by EB had uniform grain size, preferred growth orientation of (1 1 1). However, the films did not have any response to X-rays since the resistivity of the layer was only 104 V cm. The grain distribution, grain size and roughness of films grown by HPVD were nonuniform. VPVD gave uniform films 35 to 150 Am thick, grain size between 5 and 25 Am, preferred growth orientation of (1 1 1), resistivity of 106 V cm and linear response to X-rays. Correlations between texture and grain size with substrate temperature were established.

CdTe single crystal, were grown by the Modified Markov Method. We have introduced an insulating element between the furnace and the growth chamber, trying to minimize the radiation effects in the crystal. Numerical simulation of the heat transfer phenomena predict a reduction of the axial temperature gradient in the growth chamber, confirming by numerical experimental measurements, leading to a more uniform growth. An improvement in the surface morphology and in the crystal quality as well was achieved, evaluated by the combination of X-ray rocking curves, etch pit density determination and low temperature photoluminescence.

CdTe crystals doped with several heavy metals (Hg, Tl, Pb, and Bi) in the concentration range of 1017-1018 at/cm3 have been grown by the vertical Bridgman method. The structural quality and uniformity of the crystals was verified by chemical determination of etch pits density and by X-ray rocking curves. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was employed for evaluating the dopant concentration and foreign impurities. Low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements were performed on the crystals in the 1.2-1.6 eV energy range. The crystals electrical properties were studied by Hall and I-V measurements. (D-X) and (DAP) lines dominate the PL spectra for CdTe crystals, suggesting n-type conductivity and the presence of a compensation mechanism due to the heavy metal dopant incorporation. Investigating the 1.4 eV band, we obtained the Huang-Rhys parameter, the principal energy of zero phonon line and the energy of longitudinal optical phonon for each dopant. A particular PL line at 1.473 eV, correlated to MTe (M=heavy metal) defect centers, was found. It was found that the heavy metal-doped CdTe crystals have resistivity values in the range 108-1010 Ω·cm, with maximum values for Bi- and Hg-doped materials. Also, these materials show a higher dark current stability than the ones doped with the other heavy metals. Only detectors made from Hg-doped crystals gave response to X and γ radiation.

The ternary alloys PbxCd1−xTe were prepared by the vertical Bridgman method and studied from a morphological viewpoint. The evolution of the different defects with the Pb concentration was described. For x = 0.20, strong segregation was found. A supercrystal structure, formed by alternated layers of CdTe and PbTe was encountered in the PbTe rich phase. We propose some hypothesis about the mechanism for their formation. An interpretation of the optical behavior in the 0.2–0.6 eV infrared region will be also presented.

<p>A hydride generation nitrogen microwave induced plasma optical emission spectrometry (HG-MIP OES) system was developed for lead determination. Plumbane chemical generation was performed using 0.045 mol L�1 K3Fe(CN)6 as the additive in acidic medium and 2.0% w/v NaBH4 in 1% w/v NaOH as the reductant. The additivated sample and the reductant were pumped towards a cyclonic chamber where<br />hydride generation and separation from the solution occurred. Operating conditions such as the additive and reductant concentration, sample, reductant and nitrogen flow-rate, the cyclonic chamber stabilization time and the viewing position in the torch were optimized. A meticulous study of the variation of the nitrogen plasma response as a function of the hydrochloric acid concentration was carried out. The analytical performance of the method was studied and its applicability evaluated in<br />a Trace Element in Water Certified Reference Material and a Soil Reference Material. The method performance in terms of limits of detection and quantification (0.54 mg L�1 and 1.8 mg L�1 Pb, respectively) was found comparable to other atomic spectrometry techniques. This is to our knowledge the first research on the analytical performance of lead determination by PbH4 generation and determination by MIP OES.</p>

OBJECTIVES: A Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial susceptibility quality control comparison programme was re-established in Latin America and the Caribbean to ensure antimicrobial susceptibility data produced from the region are comparable nationally and internationally. METHODS: Three panels, consisting of N. gonorrhoeae isolates comprising reference strains and other characterised isolates were sent to 11 participating laboratories between 2013 and 2015. Antimicrobial susceptibilities for these isolates were determined using agar dilution, Etest or disc diffusion methods. Modal minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for each panel isolate/antibiotic combination were calculated. The guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute were used for interpretations of antimicrobial susceptibility. The agreement of MICs with the modal MICs was determined for each of the participating laboratories as well as for each of the antibiotics tested. RESULTS: Five of 11 laboratories that participated in at least one panel had an overall average agreement between participants' MIC results and modal MICs of >90%. For other laboratories, agreements ranged from 60.0% to 82.4%. The proportion of agreement between interpretations for all the antibiotics, except penicillin and tetracycline, was >90%. The percentages of agreement between MIC results and their modes for erythromycin, spectinomycin, cefixime and azithromycin were >90%. Tetracycline, ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin agreement ranged from 84.5% to 89.1%, while penicillin had 78.8% agreement between MICs and modal MICs. CONCLUSIONS: The participating laboratories had acceptable results, similar to other international quality assurance programmes. It is important to ensure continuation of the International Gonococcal Antimicrobial Susceptibility Quality Control Comparison Programme to ensure that participants can identify and correct any problems in antimicrobial susceptibility testing for N. gonorrhoeae as they arise and continue to generate reproducible and reliable data.
