A summary of the resource.
The virgin oil extraction from avocado Hass was carried using an Abencor pilot scale plant. High-power ultrasound (1.73 MHz) was applied after mixing. High-frequency ultrasound device consists of two transductors which each deliver 30 W/L. Different proportions of water were added before ultrasound treatment (no water added and paste:water relation (1:3, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1) and also different ultrasound application times (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 minutes). The study was carried out by setting one of the two variables considered and changing the values of the other. In the water addition study, ultrasound time was set at 15 min. It was found that oil recovery increased with the percentage of water added. It was decided to employ a ratio of 1:1 to study the influence of ultrasound application time. Under these conditions, it was found that with 1 minute of ultrasound application, recovery increased by 40 % over the process without ultrasound. It was observed that the composition in fatty acids and the content of natural antioxidants (tocopherols and polyphenols) are not affected by the ultrasound application. It is concluded that the application of high-frequency ultrasound with addition of water post malaxing improves recovery of virgin avocado oil without negative effects on the general quality of the oil.

Cryptoblabes gnidiella Milliére (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is an economically important exotic pest of vineyards in Southern Brazil and Uruguay. The sex pheromone of C. gnidiella was identified as a mixture of (Z)-11-hexadecenal and (Z)-13-octadecenal, and has been used to monitor populations of this pest in Israel. The development of mating disruption for this species may be hampered by the chemical instability of the natural pheromone components. Therefore, studies on more stable pheromone analogs may provide tools for a control strategy based on behavior-modifying chemicals. We report here the electrophysiological and behavioral responses of C. gnidiella males to (Z)-9-tetradecenyl formate and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl formate, structural analogs of the pheromone components. In gas chromatography-electroantennogramdetection (GC-EAD) studies, both analogs elicited responses from C. gnidiella male antennae. Pre-exposure to the formates did not affect the subsequent EAD responses to the natural pheromone components. The formates acted as pheromone antagonists in wind tunnel tests, inhibiting the responses of males toward both synthetic pheromone and calling females. In the field, captures of males in pheromone-baited traps decreased, in a dose-response pattern, when different amount of formates were added to the pheromone. These pheromone antagonists, thus, are potentially useful as mating disruptants for C. gnidiella in commercial vineyards.

The synthesis of key fragments of scleritodermin A, their assembly, and their biological evaluation as cytotoxic and anthelmintic were performed. Highlights of the synthetic route include formation of the α-ketoamide linkage and use of stereocontrolled reactions. Open analogs of this natural product were obtained using a convergent strategy.

A summary of the resource.
The results from the synthesis of peptides by Fmoc/SPPS on a 2-CTC resin and then lactamization in solution or solid phase for the preparation of cyclopeptides are presented. Both procedures allow the synthesis of the desired compounds in good to very good yield and with high cyclization efficiency for on-resin macrocyclization. In addition, the activities of the corresponding cyclopeptides against the chloroquine-resistant K1 strain of Plasmodium falciparum were evaluated. Cyclo-Cys(Trt)-Gly-Thr( tBu)-Gly-Cys(Trt)-Gly showed potent in vitro and selective activity against this parasite, EC50 = 28 nM.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The preparation and cycloadditions of azidodienes 13 and 14 are described in detail. The synthesis of pyrrolines 1 and 2 is reported, and the conditions are revealed to achieve maximum selectivity in their preparation. The topography of the ultimately prepared pyrrolines depends primarily on the substitution parameters of the starting dienes and on the conditions of rearrangement of their respective vinylaziridines 15 and 16. The former parameter is easily controlled through the vinylogous Reformatsky reaction of ethyl 4-bromocrotonate with aldehyde precursors. The latter parameter depends on the choice of thermolytic vs. nucleophilic activation of particular bonds in vinylaziridines 15 and 16. The flexibility and practicality of this method is exemplified by several convergent approaches to substituted pyrrolines 1 and 2 and their conversion to the title pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Stereospecific preparation of saturated pyrrolizidines 35 is also described. A detailed study of the base-catalyzed elimination of β-acetoxy esters was performed, and the stereochemical consequences are reported for the formation of E and Z geometric isomers of dienes 13.

A summary of the resource.
Even though the use of enzymes as catalyst in synthetic organic chemistry is widespread, their application in C-C- bond-forming reactions is still poor. There are several types of enzymes that catalyze C-C bond formation and the most used are the most readily available. Currently, the availability of these enzymes is increasing. This review will cover synthetic applications of three types of enzymes related to three different reactions: aldol reaction, acyloin condensation, and cyanohydrin reaction. The enzymes involved, aldolases, pyruvate decarboxylase and oxynitrilases, are all readily available.

Persistent extracellular tissue-dwelling pathogens face the challenge of antibody-dependent activation of the classical complement pathway (CCP). A prime example of this situation is the larva of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, causing cystic echinococcosis. This tissue-dwelling, bladder-like larva is bounded by a cellular layer protected by the outermost acellular “laminated layer” (LL), to which host antibodies bind. The LL is made up of a mucin meshwork and interspersed nano-deposits of calcium inositol hexakisphosphate (calcium InsP6). We previously reported that calcium InsP6 bound C1q, apparently initiating CCP activation. The present work dissects CCP activation on the LL. Most of the C1 binding activity in the LL corresponded to calcium InsP6, and this binding was enhanced by partial proteolysis of the mucin meshwork. The remaining C1 binding activity was attributable to host antibodies, which included CCP-activating IgG isotypes. Calcium InsP6 made only a weak contribution to early CCP activation on the LL, suggesting inefficient C1 complex activation as reported for other polyanions. CCP activation on calcium InsP6 gave rise to a dominant population of C3b deposited onto calcium InsP6 itself that appeared to be quickly inactivated. Apparently as a result of inefficient initiation plus C3b inactivation, calcium InsP6 made no net contribution to C5 activation. We propose that the LL protects the underlying parasite cells from CCP activation through the combined effects of inefficient permeation of C1 through the mucins and C1 retention on calcium InsP6. This mechanism does not result in C5 activation, which is known to drive parasite-damaging inflammation.

Proliferation of macrophages is a hallmark of inflammation in many type 2 settings including helminth infections. The cellular expansion is driven by the type 2 cytokine interleukin-4 (IL-4), as well as by M-CSF, which also controls homeostatic levels of tissue resident macrophages. Cystic echinococcosis, caused by the tissue-dwelling larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus, is characterised by normally subdued local inflammation. Infiltrating host cells make contact only with the acellular protective coat of the parasite, called laminated layer, particles of which can be ingested by phagocytic cells. Here we report that a particulate preparation from this layer (pLL) strongly inhibits the proliferation of macrophages in response to IL-4 or M-CSF. In addition, pLL also inhibits IL-4-driven up-regulation of Relm-α, without similarly affecting Chitinase-like 3 (Chil3/Ym1). IL-4-driven cell proliferation and up-regulation of Relm-α are both known to depend on the phosphatidylinositol (PI3K)/Akt pathway, which is dispensable for induction of Chil3/Ym1. Exposure to pLL in vitro inhibited Akt activation in response to proliferative stimuli, providing a potential mechanism for its activities. Our results suggest that the E. granulosus laminated layer exerts some of its anti-inflammatory properties through inhibition of PI3K/Akt activation and consequent limitation of macrophage proliferation.

The aim of the present work was to assess consumers' willingness to pay for reformulated frankfurters in the context of the implementation of nutritional warnings. Images of frankfurter packages were designed using a fractional factorial design with 5 2-level variables: brand type, sodium reduction, saturated fat reduction, fibre claim and cholesterol claim. An online study with 548 consumers was implemented with Chilean participants, who were asked to indicate how much they would be willing to pay for each of the packages. Data were analysed using analysis of variance and hierarchical cluster analysis. Willingness to pay was significantly affected by brand type and sodium and fat reduction, whereas fibre and cholesterol claim did not have a significant effect. These results suggest that in the context of the implementation of nutritional warnings reformulation of processed meat products should focus on the reduction of key nutrients, although consumers may not be willing to pay a higher price for reformulated products.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Bull’s-eye rot, produced by Phlyctema vagabunda, is an important postharvest disease in apples. Current measures to control infection include synthetic fungicides, in addition to the<br />application of copper hydroxide and potassium phosphite. However, growing public concern regarding fungicide residues in food has generated interest in developing non-chemical alternative control methods; biological control is one of the most promising alternatives. In this research, native<br />endophytic yeasts were isolated and evaluated for the biocontrol of P. vagabunda in apples. The mechanisms of action involved were also determined. Our research found 2 isolates, Vishniacozyma victoriae EPL4.5 and EPL29.5, which exhibited biocontrol activity against P. vagabunda at 20 �C in<br />apples, the incidence of bull’s-eye rot was reduced by 39% and 61%, respectively, and the severity of the disease was decreased by 67% and 70%, respectively, when apples were inoculated with these yeasts 24 h before applying the pathogen. The main mechanisms that could be involved<br />in the observed biocontrol activity are the ability to form biofilms and the production of volatile organic compounds.

A summary of the resource.
One hundred twenty-five yeast strains isolated from table grapes and apples were evaluated for the control Botrytis cinerea of in vitro and in vivo. Ten strains were selected for their ability to inhibit mycelial growth of B. cinerea in vitro. In the in vivo assays, these yeasts were tested at 20 ◦C on ‘Thompson Seedless’ berries for 7 days; only three were selected (m11, me99 and ca80) because they significantly reduced the incidence of gray mold. These three yeast strains were then evaluated at different concentrations (1 × 107 , 1 × 108 and 1 × 109 cells mL−1 ) on ‘Thompson Seedless’ grape berries at 20 ◦C. The strains m11, me99 and ca80 reduced the incidence of B. cinerea to 11.9, 26.1 and 32.1%, respectively, when the berries were submerged in a yeast suspension at a concentration of 1 × 109 cells mL−1 24 h before inoculation with B. cinerea. The most favorable pH for antifungal activity was 4.6 in the three isolates. The three yeast strains secreted the hydrolytic enzymes chitinase and β-1-glucanase, and two strains (me99 and ca80) produced siderophores. The three yeast strains exhibited low oxidative stress tolerance and only strain m11 had the ability to produce biofilms. The strains were identified using 5.8S-ITS rDNA PCR-RFLP and correspond to the Meyerozyma guilliermondii (m11) and Aureobasidium pullulans (me99 and ca80) species.

We report on the magnetic properties and stability of nanofluid ferromagnetic graphite (NFMG) studied<br />through the measurements of its magnetization hysteresis curves, Raman spectrum and the so-called<br />Zeta potential. H-beta zeolite has been tested for the hydration of dihydromyrcene (DHM) to produce dihydromyrcenol (DHM-OH). By using a non-protic co-solvent like acetone, in order to work under a single phase system, reasonable conversion with excellent selectivity to DHM-OH is obtained, although some double bond isomerization of the terpene is also taking place. The reaction is not controlled by intrapore diffusion, and samples with different crystal sizes gave similar activities and selectivities. However, defect free beta samples with high hydrophobic character are preferred for the reaction due to their improved adsorption properties for non-polar molecules. Working with those materials more than 50% yield of DHM-OH was obtained with a selectivity close to 100%. The influence of zeolite hydrophobicity was further proved in a two-phase liquid reaction system. In such conditions, best results were achieved with the most hydrophobic catalysts.

Two catalysts prepared separately by iron pillaring of two different-sized particle fractions of a dried, ground and sieved clay mineral were tested for catalytic performance in photo-Fenton discoloration of methylene blue aqueous solutions. Two different-sized particle fractions of the mineral were selected prior to pillaring, ranging below 250 mm and within the range of 250– 450 mm, respectively. The resulting solids were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption isotherms and ultimate analysis at different preparation stages. Significant differences were found in catalyst textural parameters according to the starting mineral particle size, a higher specific surface area, and specific pore volume, was found for the catalyst obtained from the smaller-sized particle fraction of the mineral. Both catalysts showed activity in the discoloration of aqueous dye solution. Differences in catalyst performance were correlated with textural parameters. Trial tests were conducted in different experimental conditions, enabling the assessment of contributions of different catalytic mechanisms

A montmorillonite was pillared separately with chromium and aluminum polyoxocations (Cr–C and Al–C respectively) and also with an equimolar mixture of both polioxocations (Al–Cr–C). The resulting solids were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption at �196 �C. The inclusion of polycations in the interlamellar space led to modifications in the properties of the clay. An eleven fold increase in specific surface area with respect to the calcined starting clay was found for the Al–C, whereas a twofold increase was observed for the Cr–C; the value for the Al–Cr–C was only slightly higher than that for the latter. Diffractograms of the Cr–C showed the occurrence of a Cr2O3 phase. Catalytic activity in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane was assayed in the temperature range from 350 �C to 450 �C using Ar/C3H8/O2 (80/10/10) as reactant gas mixture. Propylene selectivity was found to be temperature- dependent, showing a maximum in the studied temperature range for the catalyst containing only aluminum, whereas remaining practically constant for the Cr-containing catalysts. Highly promising propylene yields at low temperature were obtained with the catalyst containing Al and Cr (Al–Cr–C): 9.3% at 350 �C and 10.3% at 450 �C.

A raw montmorillonite was exchanged with the trinuclear Fe(III) acetate complex and calcined at 400 °C. Ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 3.5 mmol of complex per gram of clay were employed. The pillared solids (Fe-PILCs) were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption isotherms. Total iron amount incorporated by the clay increases with the complex/clay ratio used from 6.1% to 17.6%. Iron is incorporated mainly in the interlayer space when the clay is pillared with the smallest complex/clay ratio and a microporous network is generated. Adsorption of iron on the outer surface is favored for higher iron loads and results in the creation of a mesoporous structure. Mössbauer analysis shows the presence of iron as maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) particles with a wide particle size distribution. All the Fe-PILCs were active as catalysts for phenol degradation under photo-Fenton like conditions using UVA radiation and a maximum in their activity is achieved for an intermediate iron content (13.4%).
