Cyanobacterial toxic blooms are aworldwide problem. The Río de la Plata (RdlP) basinmakes up about one fourth of South America areal surface, second only to the Amazonian. Intensive agro-industrial land use and the construction of dams have led to generalized eutrophication ofmain tributaries and increased the intensity and duration of cyanobacteria blooms. Herewe analyse the evolution of an exceptional bloomat the lowRdlP basin and Atlantic coast during the summer of 2019. A large array of biological, genetic,meteorological, oceanographic and satellite data is combined to discuss the driving mechanisms. The bloomcovered thewhole stripe of the RdlP estuary and the Uruguayan Atlantic coasts (around 500 km) for approximately 4 months. It was caused by the Microcystis aeruginosa complex (MAC), which produces hepatotoxins (microcystin). Extreme precipitation in the upstreamregions of Uruguay and Negro rivers' basins caused highwater flows and discharges. The evolution of meteorological and oceanographic conditions as well as the similarity of organisms' traits in the affected area suggest that the bloom originated in eutrophic reservoirs at the lower RdlP basin, Salto Grande in the Uruguay river, and Negro river reservoirs. High temperatures and weak Eastern winds prompted the rapid dispersion of the bloom over the freshwater plume along the RdlP northern and Atlantic coasts. The long-distance rapid drift allowed active MAC organisms to inoculate freshwater bodies from the Atlantic basin, impacting environments relevant for biodiversity conservation. Climate projections for the RdlP basin suggest an increase in precipitation and river water flux, which, in conjunction with agriculture intensification and dams' construction, might turn this extraordinary event into an ordinary situation. The freshwater cyanotoxins, microcystins (MCs), pose a global public health threat as potent hepatotoxins in cyanobacterial blooms; their persistence in drinking and recreational water has been associated with potential chronic effects in addition to acute intoxications. Rapid and accurate detection of the over 80 structural congeners is challenged by the rigorous and time consuming clean up required to overcome interference found in raw water samples. MALDI-MS has shown promise for rapid quantification of individual congeners in raw water samples, with very low operative cost, but so far limited sensitivity and lack of available and versatile internal standards (ISs) has limited its use. Two easily synthesized S-hydroxyethyl-Cys(7)-MC-LR and -RR ISs were used to generate linear standard curves in a reflectron MALDI instrument, reproducible across several orders of magnitude for MC-LR, -RR and -YR. Minimum quantification limits in direct water samples with no clean up or concentration step involved were consistently below 7 μg/L, with recoveries from spiked samples between 80 and 119%. This method improves sensitivity by 30 fold over previous reports of quantitative MALDI-TOF applications to MCs and provides a salient option for rapid throughput analysis for multiple MC congeners in untreated raw surface water blooms as a means to identify source public health threats and target intervention strategies within a watershed. As demonstrated by analysis of a set of samples from Uruguay, utilizing the reaction of different MC congeners with alternate sulfhydryl compounds, the m/z of the IS can be customized to avoid overlap with interfering compounds in local surface water samples. Concurrent elicitation of hedonic and sensory information from consumers helps to identify the sensory attributes that drive consumer preferences. However, there is a risk that asking consumers about specific sensory characteristics can bias their hedonic responses. This research extends previous work by investigating if concurrent use of rate-all-that-apply (RATA) questions, a variant of CATA questions is associated with bias of the hedonic scores. RATA questions extend CATA questions by requiring consumers to also rate the intensity of the terms that are applicable for describing samples (‘high’, ‘medium’ and ‘low’). In eight consumer studies (n = 560) across five product categories there was no evidence of concurrent use of RATA questions influencing hedonic scores. When RATA questions were used concurrently with a hedonic question there was a strong tendency for greater hedonic discrimination between samples (5 of 8 studies). This suggested that the discriminative capacity of the hedonic question was increased by inclusion of the RATA question, a result that could be attributable to the RATA question increasing consumers’ engagement and attention to the task. Further research is required to confirm this result and tentative explanation. A raw montmorillonite was exchanged with the trinuclear Fe(III) acetate complex and calcined at 400 °C. Ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 3.5 mmol of complex per gram of clay were employed. The pillared solids (Fe-PILCs) were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption isotherms. Total iron amount incorporated by the clay increases with the complex/clay ratio used from 6.1% to 17.6%. Iron is incorporated mainly in the interlayer space when the clay is pillared with the smallest complex/clay ratio and a microporous network is generated. Adsorption of iron on the outer surface is favored for higher iron loads and results in the creation of a mesoporous structure. Mössbauer analysis shows the presence of iron as maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) particles with a wide particle size distribution. All the Fe-PILCs were active as catalysts for phenol degradation under photo-Fenton like conditions using UVA radiation and a maximum in their activity is achieved for an intermediate iron content (13.4%). The reactivity of alkali–manganese(II) and alkali trifluoroacetates towards amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) was studied in the solid-state. K4Mn2(tfa)8, Cs3Mn2(tfa)7(tfaH), KH(tfa)2, and CsH(tfa)2 (tfa = CF3COO–) were thermally decomposed under vacuum in fused quartz tubes. Three new bimetallic fluorotrifluoroacetates of formulas K4Mn3(tfa)9F, Cs4Mn3(tfa)9F, and K2Mn(tfa)3F were discovered upon thermolysis at 175 °C. K4Mn3(tfa)9F and Cs4Mn3(tfa)9F feature a triangular-bridged metal cluster of formula [Mn3(μ3-F)(μ2- tfa)6(tfa)3]4−. In the case of K2Mn(tfa)3F, fluoride serves as an inverse coordination center for the tetra hedral metal cluster K2Mn2(μ4-F). Fluorotrifluoroacetates may be regarded as intermediates in the trans formation of bimetallic trifluoroacetates to fluoroperovskites KMnF3, CsMnF3, and Cs2MnF4, which crystal lized between 250 and 600 °C. Decomposition of these trifluoroacetates also yielded alkali hexafluorosili cates K2SiF6 and Cs2SiF6 as a result of the fluorination of fused quartz. The ability to fluorinate fused quartz was observed for monometallic alkali trifluoroacetates as well. Hexafluorosilicates and heptafluoro silicates K3SiF7 and Cs3SiF7 were obtained upon thermolysis of KH(tfa)2 and CsH(tfa)2 between 200 and 400 °C. This ability was exploited to synthesize fluorosilicates under air by simply reacting alkali trifluoroa cetates with a-SiO2 powder. The iboga alkaloids scaffold shows great potential as a pharmacophore in drug candidates for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. Thus, the study of the reactivity of this type of motif is particularly useful for the generation of new analogs suitable for medicinal chemistry goals. In this article, we analyzed the oxidation pattern of ibogaine and voacangine using dioxygen, peroxo compounds, and iodine as oxidizing agents. Special focus was placed on the study of the regio- and stereochemistry of the oxidation processes according to the oxidative agent and starting material. We found that the C16-carboxymethyl ester present in voacangine stabilizes the whole molecule toward oxidation in comparison to ibogaine, especially in the indole ring, where 7- hydroxy- or 7-peroxy-indolenines can be obtained as oxidation products. Nevertheless, the ester moiety enhances the reactivity of the isoquinuclidinic nitrogen to afford C3-oxidized products through a regioselective iminium formation. This differential reactivity between ibogaine and voacangine was rationalized using computational DFT calculations. In addition, using qualitative and quantitative NMR experiments combined with theoretical calculations, the absolute stereochemistry at C7 in the 7- hydroxyindolenine of voacangine was revised to be S, which corrects previous reports proposing an R configuration. An increasing number of reports worldwide stated a variety of currently used pesticides (CUPs) and legacy contaminants occurring in tissues of freshwater fish. Although few information is available on the effects of these pesticides at ecological level particularly at sub-lethal doses and their interactions in a continuous multiple exposure scenario, fish species became a promising bioindicator to understand the environmental fate and dynamic of pesticides in freshwater. This review highlights latest findings concerning bioaccumulation, biotransformation and effects of pesticides on fish health. Metabolomic and proteomic studies should help to understand consequences of pesticide exposure to fish. Finally, human food safety perspectives are also discussed. The production, under environmentally benign conditions, of efficient and more cost-effective anti-infective agents (available to the whole mankind) is one of most ambitious dreams of the industrial medicinal chemistry. Semi-synthetic b-lactam antibiotics are very effective anti-infective agents. They are very stable and can be used via oral delivery. They exhibit a very wide spectrum of anti-bacterial activity and minimal side effects after being massively used for a very long time. In this way, we can assume that semi-synthetic b-lactam antibiotics are going to be one of the key anti-infective agents in the next years. The condensation of natural or modified antibiotic nuclei with different acyl donor chains is one of the key steps for the industrial synthesis of these anti-infective agents. Up to now, these condensations are mainly carried out through classical chemical methods and this implies a number of economical, ecological and technological drawbacks (high energy requirements, many protection and deprotection steps, utilization of toxic methylene chloride as solvent, etc). Enzyme biocatalysts may be very useful to catalyse these selective condensations under very mild experimental and environmental conditions. In fact, the possibility of using enzymes to carry out such biotransformations, at laboratory scale, has been discussed and demonstrated a long time ago. However, industrial synthesis of b-lactamic antibiotics is still carried out via unfavorable chemical routes. In fact, enzymes have not been produced in the nature to act in industrial reactors; so they are usually very unstable, inhibited by substrates and products and they may not have ideal catalytic properties for industrial uses (high reaction rates, required selectivity, ability to reach quantitative synthetic yields, stable enough to run a number of reaction cycles, etc). These limitations of enzyme biocatalysis become even more significant mainly when the enzyme is going to be used with non-natural substrates, catalysing non-natural processes and working under non-conventional conditions. However, in the last ten years, a great number of papers have reported substantial improvement of these enzymatic synthetic approaches (new enzymes, better enzyme derivatives, improved reaction designs and so on) and it seems that a massive industrial implementation of enzymes in antibiotic synthesis is approaching. In this review, we would like to make a critical discussion of these very interesting advances in the application of enzyme biocatalysts for the industrial synthesis of semi-synthetic antibiotics. Baccharis is a widespread genus belonging to the Asteraceae family that includes almost 400 species exclusively from the Americas. Even when studied in detail, the taxonomic classification among species from this genus is not yet fully defined. Within the framework of our study of the volatile composition of the Baccharis genus, four species (B. trimera, B. milleflora, B. tridentata, and B. uncinella) were collected from the ‘Campos de Cima da Serra’ highlands of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The aerial parts were dried and extracted by the simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE) procedure. This is the first time that SDE has been applied to obtain and compare the volatile-extract composition in the Baccharis genus. Characterization of the volatile extracts allowed the identification of 180 peaks with many coeluting components; these latter being detailed for the first time for this genus. The multivariate statistical analyses allowed separating the volatile extracts of the four populations of Baccharis into two separate groups. The first one included the B. milleflora, B. trimera, and B. uncinella volatile extracts. The three species showed a high degree of similarity in their volatile composition, which was characterized by the presence of high contents of sesquiterpene compounds, in particular of spathulenol. The second group comprised the extract of B. tridentata, which contained α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, and (E)-β-ocimene in high amounts.
