To investigate the relative influence of nutritional warnings and 2 marketing strategies commonly used in food labels, nutrient claims, and fruit images on consumers’ healthfulness judgments. Design Labels of cereal bars were designed according to a full factorial design with 3 2-level variables: images of fruit (with vs without), nutrient claims about the fiber content (with vs without), and nutritional warnings about excessive content of sugar and saturated fat (with vs without). Setting Experiment conducted in Montevideo, Uruguay. Participants One hundred Uruguayan people, 75% female, aged 18–56 years. Main Outcome Measures Healthfulness perception and eye-tracking variables. Analysis The researchers used ANOVA to evaluate the influence of the experimental design's variables on perceived healthfulness and eye-tracking measures. Results Nutritional warnings caught participants’ attention and reduced the amount of visual attention needed to evaluate healthfulness. Participants mainly relied on nutritional warnings to make healthfulness judgments. Conclusions and Implications Findings of the current work confirm the potential of nutritional warnings to influence consumers’ healthfulness perception, overriding the effect of other label cues used by the food industry to convey the concept of healthfulness.

The availability of experimental data on biomolecular ions diusing in a low-pressure gas has raised a number of important questions about the folding behaviour of anhydrous proteins in vacuo. In this work, we explore an important aspect of the folding mechanism for anhydrous proteins, namely, its sensitivity to changes in primary sequence. To this end, we study the computer-simulated relaxation dynamics of protein conformers that share the same initial unfolded backbone geometry, but that dier in the primary sequences. The initial unfolded (transient) conformers are derived from an in vacuo unfolding run of lysozyme. The relaxation behaviour of unfolded disulÐde-intact lysozyme is compared with that of four other dierent sequences threaded to the same unfolded backbone geometry: disulÐde-reduced lysozyme, cytochrome c@, polyglycine and polyalanine. Using a large ensemble of molecular dynamics trajectories, we monitor conÐgurational transitions in a two-dimensional space of order parameters that convey changes in compactness and chain entanglement. Our results indicate that both disulÐde-intact and disulÐde-reduced lysozyme relax to structures with quasi-native compactness and entanglement. However, fast refolding appears to be more efficient in the presence of the disulÐde bridges, since noncompact intermediates persist longer in disulÐde-reduced lysozyme. The cytochrome c@ sequence threaded onto the lysozyme transient shows similar relaxation behaviour to that of disulÐde-intact lysozyme. Yet, the cytochrome c@ sequence gives rise to several long-lived intermediates, one of which displays global molecular shape features similar to those of native cytochrome c@. In contrast, the relaxation of the polyglycine transient exhibits no initial large-scale collapse, but rather resembles the pearlingÏÏ transition of homopolymers (i.e., the initial formation of small locally compact blobs of chain). Polyalanine displays an intermediate behaviour, characterized by instances of both successful and frustrated global collapse. These Ðndings shed light on how primary sequence aects speciÐcally the formation of initial, persistent folding intermediates in vacuo.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this study is to assess the environmental lead exposure of a group of people living near a lead smelter aiready closed. Blood lead levels of 84 adults and 11 children living at a residential complex (Euskal Ema) situated 2 km far from the source were determined. Personal data collected for each subject was concomitant with the taking of blood samples. The data collected included sex, age, time of residence and symptoms that could be related to lead exposure. Lead in blood was determined by flame atomic'absoprtion spectrophotometry after complexation of lead with DDDC and direct extraction into meíhylisobuíhyl- ketone using as a Perkin Elmer 2380 equipment. The analytical method was validated by an international intercalibration program. A control population of 29 unexposed adults and 34 unexposed children from different places of Montevideo was included in the study. The average blood lead concentration for adults was 9.3 µg % (range 6.1-15.0) and 10.0 µg % for children (range 6.0-16.9).For the population under study the average blood lead concentration obtained was 8.6 µg % for adults (range 3.1-24.8) and 9.3 µg % for children (range 6.1-15.0). The results obtained were beneath the limits established by WHO, and could be compared with the control population. They also show that there are no other lead sources in the residential environment considered.

Polarized projective mapping (PPM) combines the main features of projective mapping and polarized sensory positioning. The main advantage of this methodology is that it allows comparing results obtained in different sessions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of PPM, focusing on individual and global repeatability, global reproducibility and data aggregation from different sessions. A consumer study with two sample sets of powdered drinks was carried out. Consumers were randomly divided into four groups: two of the groups evaluated the same sample set in two different sessions, while the other two evaluated the samples in three sessions (in one of the sessions, they evaluated the whole sample set, whereas in the other two sessions they evaluated the sample set split into two sets). Results showed that PPM can be regarded as a repeatable and reproducible methodology. Preliminary evidence of the validity of aggregating data from different sessions was gathered.

A summary of the resource.
Four fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) have been described in 4 parasitic platyhelminths: Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonicum, Fasciola hepatica and Echinococcus granulosus. FABPs form a multigenic family of cytosolic proteins widely distributed in metazoan tissues, the function of which is still poorly understood. These helminth proteins have recently received attention, since there are reports to indicate that S. mansoni and F. hepatica FABPs may be protective antigens. In addition, these proteins could play a major role in the parasites' life-cycles because platyhelminths are unable to synthesize de novo most of their lipids. We have undertaken phylogenetic and structural analyses of platyhelminth FABPs in an attempt to characterize features of biological relevance. Phylogenetically, these FABPs appear to be more closely related to those of vertebrate heart, mammary gland, muscle, retina, skin, brain and myelin, although no clear functional relationships were established between them. We describe several conserved motifs characteristic of specific groups of FABPs. Hydrophilicity, flexibility and accessibility analyses revealed several major putative epitopes for the E. granulosus FABP, EgDf1, that appear to be centred in loops of the EgDf1 3-dimensional structure modelled by molecular replacement.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The design and performance of a remote Raman spectrometer are described. The unit has been tested at ranges from several hundred yards to a half‐mile in full daylight under both clear atmosphere and fog conditions. Good S/N ratios were obtained for the detection of atmospheric H2O and CO2 as well as SO2 (300 ppm m) and hydrocarbon vapors (17 ppm m) in controlled sources, with a range resolution of 10 m. This is more than two orders of magnitude better than the best published results to date.<br /><br />

The report of an AIEA meeting held in April 1976 reviews the work carried out by the participants of an IAEA-Coordinated Research Programme on Rapid Methods for the Quality Control of Radiopharmaceuticals. The applicability of the radiometric sterility testing and the limulus test for pyrogens is examined. The current status, advantages and limitations of these techniques are presented as well as the conclusions and recommendations drawn up by the participants. The IAEA coordinated work confirmed that both techniques are more rapid than the corresponding standard ones and are suitable for most radiopharmaceuticals.

Crocidosema aporema (Walsingham) is a major pest of legumes in the southern cone of Latin America. The mating behaviour of two allopatric populations (Uruguay and Brazil) of C. aporema kept in captivity was studied by observing the posture of calling females, the temporal pattern of pheromone emission and mating, and the response of males to calling females in olfactometer tests. Female calling and mating was observed during the scotophase, from the first to the seventh night after adult emergence. Male response was evaluated at night using a single calling female in a Y-shaped olfactometer. Females adopted a characteristic calling posture, extruding the pheromone gland from the tip of the abdomen. Most females started calling during the second scotophase, and all females called from the third, between the fifth and seventh hours after the onset of the scotophase. Most of the couples mated once throughout the experiment, between the third and sixth night and during the middle of the dark phase. Males preferentially chose the female arm in olfactometer tests, considering both the first arm chosen and the number of visits during the observation period. Our results describe for the fi rst time the temporal pattern associated to the reproductive behaviour of C. aporema. We also provide evidence that this tortricid is monoandrous, and that pheromones are used in intersexual communication for mate finding. Our data will be used to optimize the collection of female sex pheromones for chemical characterization in order to develop a monitoring tool for this pest.

Vine leaves are consumed in many countries but little attention is paid to the residues left on them after the application of pesticides that help prevent pests and protect the grapes, the economically important target. Therefore, it is of outmost importance to study the dissipation of the pesticides applied to this crop to protect the consumers that also eat vine leaves. Dissipation kinetics of chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos-methyl, diazinon and dimethoate residues were studied in vine leaves grown under sunny conditions in Syria, using an ethyl acetate based sample preparation followed by GC-MS/MS determination. The dissipation rate for all doses applied followed first-order kinetics, with half-lives in grape leaves in the range of 2.9 – 3.9 days. At the recommended application dose, a withholding period of 8.9-37.1 days before consumption should be applied to meet current MRLs and minimise risks to consumers. The effectiveness in the reduction of pesticide loads in vine leaves through washing with either cold or hot water was dependant on the physicochemical properties of the studied pesticides. Hot water washing was very effective for dimethoate, a polar and water-soluble pesticide, with an effective reduction of 92% of the residue level; but no significant effect was observed for chlorpyrifos, the most apolar compound in this study.

In an attempt to understand the molecular basis of the development of Echinococcus granulosus, we have previously isolated several homeobox-containing genes (EgHbx1±5). Here we report the characterisation of the EgHbx1 proximal regulatory domain. EgHbx1 codes for an amino acid sequence presenting 90% identity at the homeodomain level with the Drosophila melanogaster NK1-S59 transcription factor. The proximal regulatory domain sequence and the transcription start site were determined. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays using nuclear extracts from protoscoleces revealed the presence of speci®c DNA±protein complexes. These results constitute a hint and provide new tools to decipher regulatory cascades during E. granulosus development. # 2000 Australian Society for Parasitology Inc. Three new mixed-chelate copper complexes with 3-aminoquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N1,N4-dioxide derivatives and alanine as ligands were synthesized in solid state. The spectroscopic characterization (FTIR, EPR, UV-Vis) showed that copper coordinated through the amine and the N-oxide groups of the quinoxaline derivatives and the amine and carboxylate moieties from alanine forming a dimeric species. The tree complexes showed in vitro activity against M. tuberculosis H37Rv (ATCC 27294) similar to that of ethambutol while they are inactive against E. coli and S. aureus.

A summary of the resource.
Clostridium sordelli veterinary vaccine is made by cultivating the microorganism in large industrial bioreactors and purifying the toxin from culture supernatants. The harvesting time is currently established as a function of bacterial growth, but this time is not always associated with the maximum concentration of toxin present in the supernatant. As a result, it is simple to determine the total amount of toxin produced from batch to batch. Furthermore, the toxin concentration is currently measured using in vivo LD50 methods, and results can be obtained only after 72 hours, when the bioreactor has already been stopped. Moreover, the method is time-consuming and necessitates the use of a large number of experimental animals. The development and application of a latex agglutination reagent for semi-quantification of Clostridium sordelli lethal toxin (TcsL) in industrial bioreactors are described. The reagent was developed and characterised in our laboratory, with a detection limit of 8ng of toxin per ml of culture supernatant, and then validated in actual industrial conditions. The use of such a speedy (i.e., in minutes) and simple reagent will allow for real-time monitoring of the culture, standardising the optimal end-point for harvesting in terms of toxin quantity. As a result, the efficiency of TcsL industrial production may be improved immediately.

A summary of the resource.
Thirty-seven groups of 4–32 Wistar rats were fed 2–103 cysts of 15 Toxoplasma strains. After 2 months, the rats were euthanized and their brains screened for Toxoplasma cysts and bioassayed in mice if negative. The brains of 323 of 411 rats (78.6%) were found to be infected 2 months after inoculation with Toxoplasma cysts. Two hundred cysts were necessary to infect nearly 90% of the rats. With lower doses, only 60% of the rats had residual brain infection. Brain cysts were formed only in 146 of 411 rats (35.5%). The numbers of cysts formed were in the order of tens to hundreds, only occasionally one or two thousands. The mean percentage of rats with brain cysts, and the number of cysts formed in rat brains by different inocula, increased with higher doses of cysts and then declined. This pattern is difficult to explain and similar results regarding the number of cysts formed have been published. In relation to the mean percentage of rats infected, there appears to be a plateau in infection with the higher inocula. Neither the number of rats with cysts in their brains nor the numbers of cysts formed were dependent on the Toxoplasma strain used, with the exception of one strain. Instead, individual variations were marked, and are presumably related to variations in the individual genetic resistance to Toxoplasma infection in the rat. The information gathered is considered a preliminary step for a rat model of immunity against acquired toxoplasmosis.

A summary of the resource.
The larva of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus (hydatid cyst) is protected by the acellular laminated layer (LL). The mechanisms that make this thick coat a poor activator of host complement are incompletely understood. The structure binds, through unknown motifs, the host regulator of the alternative complement pathway (ACP), factor H. A second potential mechanism of ACP regulation, the inhibition of factor B activation, was detected in assays employing purified components (Immunopharmacology 42 : 91). The inhibitor was subsequently identified as myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP(6)), which in the form of nano-deposits is a major component of the LL (Biochem J 362 : 297; J Cell Biochem 93 : 1272; FEBS J 273 : 3192). In this report we show that colloidal InsP(6 )solids inhibit factor B activation, through adsorption and associated impairment of C3b binding. However, this interaction is not relevant in the presence of serum proteins. In serum, InsP(6) deposits instead bind C1q, and initiate complement activation. This activation is curtailed through efficient C3b inactivation, previously shown to be entirely factor H-dependent, and now observed to be independent of the InsP(6) deposits. Therefore the complement resistance of the LL must be based on functional factor H binding sites present on the mucin-based meshwork that is its other major constituent.
