As a starting point, we searched in the Scopus database for the keywords: affiliation country: &ldquo;Uruguay&rdquo; and subject: &ldquo;Materials Science&rdquo; (using the &ldquo;Timb&oacute;&rdquo; platform). We inspected the records and we analyzed them to construct a timeline. The data show that we are in a steady state regime of number of publications that we expect to increase together with the number of students in the area, with the generation of long term policies (grants, funding opportunities), and, if we get involved in a community that promotes this area of interest.</text>

<text>Carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers are materials of high industrial interest. When presented as a felt, its use becomes easier and more practical. This work aims to study the conditions for obtaining and characterizing an activated carbon felt, using sheep wool as a precursor. The wool felt was oxidized, carbonized in nitrogen atmosphere and activated in water vapor. The working temperatures were selected through thermogravimetric analysis. The products and intermediates were characterized through thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. The products were assessed as potential sorbents for methane-carbon dioxide separation by adsorption kinetics measurements at different pressures. Results revealed a high influence of the carbonization temperature on the physicochemical and textural properties of the products. The adsorption kinetics and capacities of the gases showed that selectivities in separation were related to both felt carbonization temperature and gas pressure. This work revealed that activated carbon wool felts are a good alternative to synthetic fibers felt and they can be used for methane/carbon dioxide separation.</text>

<text>Herein, we have employed first-principles calculations to investigate the interaction between XY dual-doped graphene (DDG) (X = AL, Si, P, S; Y = B, N, O) and sodium/potassium. The introduction of two dopants alters the adsorption energy (AE) of sodium and potassium with respect to perfect graphene by an average of 0.88 and 0.66 eV, respectively. The systems that display the strongest interactions with the two alkalies assayed are SN and SiB DDG. Although the adsorption energy of sodium on graphene is weaker in comparison to that of potassium, the introduction of these dopants significantly reduces this difference. In effect, in some cases, the AE-K and AE-NA differ by less than 0.05 eV. The protrusion of the 3p dopants out of the graphene plane creates a hole where sodium and potassium can easily be intercalated between two layers of dual-doped graphene. The interlayer distances are reduced by less than 0.4 &Aring; after K intercalation, making the process very favorable. Finally, most importantly, this eminent rise in adsorption energies guarantees exceptional storage capacities at the cost of low doping concentration.</text>

<text>First-principles density functional theory calculations are performed to study the stability and electronic properties of hydrogenated and fluorinated two-dimensional sp3 boron phosphide (BP) and boron arsenide (BAs). As expected, the phonon dispersion spectrum and phonon density of states of hydrogenated and fluorinated BX (X = P, As) systems are found to be different, which can be attributed to the different masses of hydrogen and fluorine. Hydrogenated BX systems bear larger and indirect band gaps and are found to be different from fluorinated BX systems. These derivatives can be utilized in hydrogen storage applications and ultrafast electronic devices. Finally, we investigated the stability and electronic properties of stacked bilayers of functionalized BP. Interestingly, we found that these systems display strong interlayer interactions, which impart strong stability. In contrast with the electronic properties determined for the fluorinated/hydrogenated monolayers, we found that the electronic properties of these bilayers can finely be tuned to a narrow gap semiconductor, metallic or nearly semimetallic one by selecting a suitable arrangement of layers. Moreover, the nearly linear dispersion of the conduction band edge and the heavy-, light-hole bands are the interesting characteristics. Furthermore, the exceptional values of effective masses assure the fast electronic transport, making this material very attractive to construct electronic devices.</text>

<text>The structure of the O-antigen polysaccharide (PS) from the Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli O63 has been elucidated using a combination of bioinformatics, component analyses and NMR spectroscopy. The O-antigen is comprised of tetrasaccharide repeating units with the following structure: &rarr;2)-&beta;-d-Quip3N(d-allo-ThrAc)-(1&rarr;2)-&beta;-d-Ribf-(1&rarr;4)-&beta;-d-Galp-(1&rarr;3)-&alpha;-d-GlcpNAc-(1&rarr; in which the N-acetylated d-allo-threonine is amide-linked to position 3 of the 3-amino-3-deoxy-d-Quip sugar residue. The presence of a predicted flippase and polymerase encoded in the O63 gene cluster is consistent with the Wzx/Wzy biosynthetic pathway and consequently the biological repeating unit has likely an N-acetyl-d-glucosamine residue at its reducing end. A bioinformatics approach based on predictive glycosyltransferase function present in ECODAB (E. coli O-antigen database) suggested the structural element &beta;-d-Galp-(1&rarr;3)-d-GlcpNAc in the O-antigen. Notably, multiple gene sequence alignment of fdtA and qdtA from E. coli to that in E. coli O63 resulted in discrimination between the two, confirmation of the latter in E. coli O63, and consequently, together with qdtB, biosynthesis of dTDP-d-Quip3N. The E. coli O63 O-antigen polysaccharide differs in two aspects from that of E. coli O114 where the latter carries instead an l-serine residue, and the glycosidic linkage positions to and from the Quip3N residue are both changed. The structural characterization of the O63 antigen repeat supports the predicted functional assignment of the O-antigen cluster genes.</text>

<text>The main challenge for the development of a high efficiency supercapacitor is the electrode material. Developing electrode materials with high specific electrical capacitance and low electrical resistance enables an increase in the energy accumulated in the device. In addition, it is expected that the electrode material presents a simple procedure for preparation having low production cost and being environmentally friendly. This work is based on the deposition of silver nanoparticles on activated carbon felt (Ag@ACF) as a supercapacitor electrode. The samples were characterized by field emission gun scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and textural analysis. Supercapacitor behavior was evaluated by galvanostatic charge-discharge curves, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy using a symmetrical two-electrode Swagelok type cell, and three different aqueous solution electrolytes: 2 M H2SO4, 6 M KOH and 1 M Na2SO4. Ag@ACF presented a high specific capacitance in KOH, about 170 F g-1, which makes it an interesting material for supercapacitor electrodes and it showed good specific electrical capacitance, low resistance and high cyclability.</text>

Two enantiomers of the benzazepinoquinoline molecule and one molecule of heptane form the asymmetric unit of this centrosymmetric triclinic ( P \overline{1}) crystal. All the molecules in the crystal present disorder. Substitutional disorder is observed for the benzazepine molecules, where a minority conformer of the R enantiomer replaces the main conformer of the S enantiomer and vice versa . Positional disorder is found for the heptane solvent molecule, which occupies a void left by the independent enantiomers of both conformers.</text>

<text><p>BACKGROUND: Scavenger Receptors (SRs) from the host's innate immune system are known to bind multiple ligands to promote the removal of non-self or altered-self targets. CD5 and CD6 are two highly homologous class I SRs mainly expressed on all T cells and the B1a cell subset, and involved in the fine tuning of activation and differentiation signals delivered by the antigen-specific receptors (TCR and BCR, respectively), to which they physically associate. Additionally, CD5 and CD6 have been shown to interact with and sense the presence of conserved pathogen-associated structures from bacteria, fungi and/or viruses.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We report herein the interaction of CD5 and CD6 lymphocyte surface receptors with Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.). Binding studies show that both soluble and membrane-bound forms of CD5 and CD6 bind to intact viable protoscoleces from E. granulosus s.l. through recognition of metaperiodate-resistant tegumental components. Proteomic analyses allowed identification of thioredoxin peroxidase for CD5, and peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase (cyclophilin) and endophilin B1 (antigen P-29) for CD6, as their potential interactors. Further in vitro assays demonstrate that membrane-bound or soluble CD5 and CD6 forms differentially modulate the pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine release induced following peritoneal cells exposure to E. granulosus s.l. tegumental components. Importantly, prophylactic infusion of soluble CD5 or CD6 significantly ameliorated the infection outcome in the mouse model of secondary cystic echinococcosis. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Taken together, the results expand the pathogen binding properties of CD5 and CD6 and provide novel evidence for their therapeutic potential in human cystic echinococcosis</p></text>
