A summary of the resource.
Two new isomers trans,mer-[RuIICl2(bpea)(DMSO)], 2a, and cis,fac-[RuIICl2(bpea)(DMSO)], 2b, (bpea ) N,N-bis- (2-pyridylmethyl)ethylamine), as well as the bis-DMSO complex trans,fac-[RuIICl(bpea)(DMSO)2]Cl, 3, have been synthesized and characterized by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy in solution. Their solid-state structure has also been solved by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All the three complexes display a ruthenium metal center possessing a distorted-octahedral type of coordination, where the bpea ligand is coordinated in a meridional fashion in 2a and in a facial fashion in 2b and 3. The isomer 2a is the kinetically favored and thus can be thermally converted into 2b, that is the thermodynamically favored one. A thorough kinetic analysis strongly points toward a dissociative mechanism, where in the first step a chloro ligand is removed from the metal coordination sphere, followed by a geometric rearrangement before the chloro ligand coordinates again, generating the final complex. DFT calculations agree with the experimental data for the proposed mechanism and allow us to further characterize the mechanism of the 2a f 2b rearrangement by obtaining the intermediates and transition state.

This study illustrates a procedure for producing different high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phases, on demand, for silica monoliths. Two commercial first-generation analytical scale bare silica monoliths were subjected to a “remodification” process that involved the following: (1) coating of the silica through an in situ silylation procedure to bond ligands of choice to the surface, (2) periodic chromatographic characterization of the coated surface over 2,000 column volumes, and (3) removing the bonded ligands using a 0.1 M hydrochloric (HCl) acid wash, to regenerate the initial silica surface. This remodification protocol was repeated for three cycles to fabricate monoliths with selected functionalities. To test reproducibility, this study was conducted on two different commercial silica monoliths subjected to this treatment involving synthetic reactions with organo-silanes and subsequent stripping with acid washes. Both monoliths were functionalized with three different coatings, without significant degradation of the initial columns' silica infrastructure and excellent stability (tested up to 2,000 column volumes). One of the monoliths had measured theoretical plates per meter (N/m) of 57,000 N/m for the original silica surface, 105,000 N/m for the first cyano coating, and 60,000 N/m for the third phenyl coating. The stationary phases prepared by remodification possessed similar selectivities to those synthesized from new silica monoliths. The results of the Tanaka test shows evidence of residual ligands of previous coatings. This study highlights the development of a high peak capacity, high-throughput (HTP) approach for a target list of 62 organic contaminants in an environmental river water matrix on a HPLC conventional 400 bar system. Key separation metrics were evaluated: (a) peak capacity, (b) total analysis time and (c) mobile phase consumption. An average peak width of 0.10 min with a total analysis time (inclusive of the column wash and re-equilibration) of 10 minutes revealed the increased productivity and performance of the parallel segmented flow (PSF) column technology HPLC-MS strategy, comparable to UHPLC peak widths and analysis times, achieved at a significantly lower backpressure (<400 bar). The operation of the PSF in a narrow-bore scale format (internal diameter of 2.1 mm) resulted in a conservative HPLC scale total mobile phase consumption of 15 mL for the column separation; only 5.5 mL of this volume was exposed to the ion source per injection. Mobile phase consumption was higher compared to that of UHPLC, but on the other hand it achieved higher peak capacity. Three representative compounds (atrazine, diclofenac and fluazuron) with differing retention and ionisation properties were studied in detail in terms of detection sensitivity. The majority of the ion ratios for the standards in the river water matrix were within ±30% of the average ion ratios. The largest ion suppression occurred for atrazine (−25% matrix effect), a pesticide notorious for poor ionization and poor peak shape issues. The lowest response transitions at 1 μg L−1 for the extracted ions in the river water matrix of atrazine, diclofenac and fluazuron had signal to noise ratios ≥3, with the exception of diclofenac where 5 μg L−1 was the lowest calibration level. The peak area's calibration curve slope and standard deviation in the detector's response determination of limit of quantification (LOQ) were between 5.2 and 30.4 μg L−1.

This study is based upon a recently established method for quantification of the antioxidant capacity of natural samples via a HPLC separation and a hyphenated selective detection (post-column derivatization with cupric reducing antioxidant capacity reagent) technique. This protocol demonstrated the main improvements to transform the quantitative protocol into a high-speed qualitative automated assay to screen samples for their potential total antioxidant capacity, typically performed via manual mixing of the sample and derivatisation and measured on a 96 well plate reader/bench top UV–Vis spectrophotometer. This approach with automated mixing is a more informative alternative for total antioxidant capacity as the antioxidant peaks are profiled for each sample within four minutes. This antioxidant profile may be used for routine analysis of raw materials and/or a guide for targeted approaches for structure elucidation for laboratories interested in early drug discovery, natural product research and the search of alternative antioxidant additives in consumer goods/therapeutics. This technique could also be used to monitor the stability, alteration or adulteration of manufactured goods containing antioxidants.

A summary of the resource.
Distortion of polyhedra is frequently used in the structure–property analysis of inorganic materials. The commonly used Baur distortion index (BDI) loses efficacy in dealing with equi-length polyhedra. This work provides an online calculator to characterize the polyhedral distortion on the basis of the best fitted idealized polyhedron (BFIP) method. This method can determine any subtle change between distorted and corresponding idealized polyhedra. It works by fitting an idealized oriented polyhedron of user-selected type to a collection of center and vertex coordinates on an orthonormal basis. The input only needs the coordinates of the center and ligand atoms. It can be accessed at http:// bfip.crystalstructure.cn. The function is demonstrated using a distorted MgO6 octahedron. Examples of the application and comparison with the BDI are given, including a tetrahedron, octahedron, eight-vertex triangular dodecahe dron/cube and cuboctahedron.

A summary of the resource.
The cost-effective simulation of biomolecular assemblies using simplified molecular representations has seen significant developments since the beginning of the century. Residue-based coarse-grained (CG) models have become increasingly popular in modeling membranes and protein systems thanks to the speed-up they provide while still offering pseudo-atomistic resolution. However, CG models of DNA have lagged, primarily due to intrinsic complexities such as the dominant role of electrostatics and stacking interactions. This unique challenge has intrigued researchers, leading to significant contributions in the field by the end of the first decade of the century. Here, we provide a comprehensive historical overview of the developments of all-atoms and CG DNA models since the early 1980s. This journey through four decades of DNA modeling aims to highlight the significance of landmark works that shape the development of more complete and accurate simulation tools today.

The improvement of the nutritional quality of dairy foods has become a key strategy for reducing the risk of developing diet-related non-communicable diseases. In this context, we aimed to optimize the concentration of inulin in combination with 10 mg/mL of coffee-cascara extract in yogurt while considering their effect on appetite control, gastrointestinal wellbeing, and their effect on the sensory and technological properties of the product. For this purpose, we tested four coffee-cascara yogurt treatments in a blind cross-over nutritional trial with 45 healthy adults: a coffee-cascara yogurt without inulin (Y0) and coffee-cascara yogurts containing 3% (Y3), 7% (Y7), and 13% (Y13) of inulin. The ratings on sensory acceptance, satiety, gastrointestinal tolerance, and stool frequency were measured. Surveys were carried out digitally in each participant’s cellphone. Yogurt pH, titratable acidity, syneresis, and instrumental texture were analyzed. Inulin addition increased the yogurt’s firmness and consistency. Y13 achieved significantly higher overall acceptance, texture, and taste scores than Y0 (p < 0.05). Y3 presented similar gastrointestinal tolerance to Y0. However, 7% and 13% of inulin produced significant (p < 0.05) bloating and flatulence when compared to Y0. The appetite ratings were not significantly affected by the acute intake of the different yogurts. Overall, Y3 was identified as the formulation that maximized nutritional wellbeing, reaching a “source of fiber” nutritional claim, without compromising its technological and sensory properties.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar el efecto del ácido clorogénico, uno de los compuestos polifenólicos con mayor concentración en la infusión de Ilex paraguariensis, sobre el daño celular y molecular inducido por el benzo(a)pireno. La infusión de Ilex paraguariensis (“mate”) es bebida por la mayoría de los habitantes de Argentina, Paraguay, sur de Brasil y Uruguay. La levadura Saccharomyces cerevisiae (cepas SC7K lys2-3; SX46A y SX46Arad14() se utilizó como modelo eucariota. Las células en crecimiento exponencial se expusieron a concentraciones crecientes de benzo(a)pireno y a tratamientos combinados con una concentración de 250 ng/mL de benzo(a)pireno y ácido clorogénico a una concentración igual a la encontrada en la infusión de yerba mate. Luego de los tratamientos se determinaron fracciones de sobrevida, frecuencia mutagénica y roturas de doble cadena de ADN así como la modulación en la expresión de la proteína Rad14 a través de un análisis de Western Blot. Se observó un aumento significativo en las fracciones de sobrevida así como una disminución en la frecuencia mutagénica después de la exposición combinada con benzo(a)pireno y ácido clorogénico en comparación con los tratamientos con benzo(a)pireno como único agente. En la cepa mutante deficiente en la proteína Rad14 se observó un aumento significativo en la sensibilidad a benzo(a)pireno en comparación con la cepa SC7K lys2-3. En los tratamientos combinados de benzo(a)pireno y ácido clorogénico se observó una importante disminución de la letalidad.Con respecto a la determinación de roturas de doble cadena de ADN no se observó fraccionamiento cromosómico a la concentración de benzo(a)pireno utilizada en los experimentos. Los análisis de Western Blot mostraron un aumento en la expresión de la proteína Rad14 en las muestras tratadas con benzo(a)pireno como único agente en comparación con la muestra control. Adicionalmente se observó una disminución en la expresión de la proteína cuando en los tratamientos se utilizaron benzo(a)pireno y ácido clorogénico combinados. Los resultados indican que el ácido clorogénico disminuye significativamente la actividad mutagénica producida por el benzo(a)pireno, la cual no se encuentra relacionada con un incremento en la remoción de las lesiones inducidas por el sistema de reparación por escisión de nucleótidos.

The electronic spectrum of the benzofurazan-N-oxide and its —OR, —NH2 and —Cl 5- substituted derivatives has been calculated on the assumption that their structure should be on a chargetransfer ion pair (benzofurazane)+ -O− . The agreement with the observed spectrum is very satisfactory; the first absorption band is assigned to an internal charge-transfer transition and the second band to a π → π* transition.<br />The prediction of the more stable isomeric structure, based on the π-electron energy difference between 1-oxo- and 3-oxo-5-substituted benzofurazans, gives results opposite to the observations reported for —OMe and —Cl derivatives. Possible reasons of this failure are discussed.<br /><br />

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
It is found theoretically that the preferred conformation of methyl fluorofonnate is cis instead of trans as reported previously Semi-empirical(CNDO/2) and ab initio (STO-3G) methods were used and the geometry was partially optimized. The rotational barrier for the methyl group is calculated and its value, 1.07 kcal/mol (CNDO/2) and 1.08 kcal/mol (STO-3G), is in agreement with experiment. Dipole moments are also calculated but are smaller than the experimental values. Finally it is shown how the isomers can be identified using electronic spectra.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Ab initio multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) calculations of OH bond breaking in the water monomer and dimer are reported in this paper. Several basis sets and MRCI methodologies are tested in order to assess the quality of the expected results. Calculation of the hydrogen transfer curves in the dimer leads to the proposition that the coupling of excited states of A″ symmetry — correlating to the state C̃1B1 in the equilibrium geometry of the monomer—causes decomposition of the dimer into HO√ and H3O√ when it is attempted to obtain its resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization spectrum under similar conditions to those used for the water monomer.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The closely related concepts of valence and chemical bonding have played a pivotal role in the development of theoretical chemistry, and are now viewed as two of the most important concepts in the entire history of chemistry. The occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the appearance of C.A. Coulson's book Valence affords a convenient opportunity to survey some of the major developments in the evolution of the concept of valence, and to place the pioneering contributions of Coulson in an appropriate historical setting. Our review starts from the earliest speculations on the subject by ancient Greek philosophers, traces the evolution of the concept down to modern times, and ends up by examining possible ways in which our ideas on valence could mature over the next forty years.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The cis-trans energy difference of bi-1-cyclopropen-1-yl and the fluoro-substituted derivs. are studied by ab initio methods in order to establish the stability of the cis and trans diene isomers. The results of the ab initio method STO-3G points toward the trans bi-1-cyclopropen-1-yl as the most stable isomer (0.2 kcal/mol). The energy of the transition state is about 2.5 kcal/mol above that of the trans isomer. The electronic transitions of the isomers are also reported

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A comparison of Roothaan-Hartree-Fock methods (both restricted and unrestricted) with density functional ones (LCAO-Xalfa and cellular MS-XalfaBeta)is made using as test case the molecular ion. It is shown the analogy that exists between RHF and symmetry- adapted LCAO-Xalfa ones. The influence of symmetry adaptation on the overall behavior of the potential energy curve is also discussed.Finally |b the difference in the behavior of the LCAO-Xalfa and cellular MS-Xalfabeta calculations is explained as an artifact of the space partitioning in the latter technique. It es concluded that LCAO-Xalfa method is superior to cellular MS-Xalfabeta because it requires less effort to reach the same results and that the general behavior is similar to UHF |b although the former affords a better equilibrium bond distance and a worse energy barrier than the latter.
