The volatile compounds of 18 yerbamate (YM) commercial brands fromArgentina, Brazil, P.araguay and Uruguay were extracted using a Likens–Nickerson simultaneous distillation–extraction (SDE) apparatus, and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Results showed that a total of 35 major volatile compounds were identified by GC–MS; among them, norisoprenoid compounds. A principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out in order to ascertain the degree of differentiation between samples and which compounds were involved. The results showed threemain groups of YM corresponding to the places where they are commercialized. The first group (samples from Paraguay and Argentina) correlated positively with 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, octanal and 1-octanol. The second group (YM marketed in Uruguay but produced in Brazil) correlated positively with α- and β-ionone, linalool, nerol, α-terpineol, (Z)-linalool oxide and the aliphatic hydrocarbons undecane, dodecane and heptadecane. The third group (YM produced and marketed in Brazil) correlated positively with 2,4-heptadienal isomers, (E)-linalool oxide and β-cyclocitral. Through a preference test, one commercial brand was selected to be analyzed by gas chromatography–olfactometry (GC–O). Sixteen odor active compounds were perceived by GC–O analysis. It seems that the norisoprenoid compounds and components produced by fatty acid degradation play a vital role in the special aroma of yerba mate.

The chemical reactivity of electron-doped and hole-doped graphene was studied by means of first principles calculations, on the basis of dispersion corrected density functional theory. To model hole-doped graphene, the widely known electron acceptor 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) was utilized, while the electron donor tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) was selected for the electron-doped case. The results demonstrate that the reactivity of graphene can be modified by the adsorption of electron donating/withdrawing molecules. The reactions considered were the addition of fluorine atoms and hydroxyl radicals. In both cases, it was observed that the adsorption of F4-TCNQ and TTF increased the reactivity of graphene. This outcome was expected for electron-doped graphene because we have recently shown that lithium increases the reactivity of graphene. Yet, for F4-TCNQ, the finding is surprising given that this molecule accepts 0.4 e− from graphene. The gas phase free energies of association are calculated to be negative for F4-TCNQ and TTF, but for the latter is only −2.5 kcal/mol. The results obtained employing infinite models and using the VDW-DF and M06-L functionals are supported by cluster model calculations performed with the M06-2X method. When TTF was adsorbed onto graphene, a charge transfer from TTF to graphene was not observed. However, when TTF and F4-TCNQ are simultaneously adsorbed on opposite sides of the graphene sheet, the amount of charge accepted by F4-TCNQ and donated by TTF is increased. This work clearly suggests that dual doping is a useful tool to expand, even to a greater extent, the possibilities to tune the properties of graphene. Further work must be devoted to synthesize better electron donors and acceptors and thus allow for larger charge transfer.

Glycosidases provide a powerful resource for in vitro synthesis of novel anomerically pure glycosides. Generation of new low molecular weight galactosides is of interest since they are potential galectin inhibitors. Galectins are molecular targets for cancer therapy and thus their inhibitors are potential antitumor agents. Here we report the enzymatic synthesis and structural characterization of 2-aminoethyl b-Dgalactopyranoside. Critical parameters for transgalactosylation using either soluble or immobilized enzyme were investigated and optimized for the galactoside synthesis. We found that 0.2 M lactose, and 0.5 M 2-aminoethanol at 50 �C for 30 min were the optimal conditions for synthesis. 2-Aminoethanol proved to be an enzyme inhibitor, fitting a mixed inhibition model with inhibition constants, Kic = 0.31 ± 0.04 M and Kiu = 0.604 ± 0.035 M.

Epilepsy, which is one of the most common neurological disorders, involves the occurrence of spontaneous and recurrent seizures that alter the performance of the brain and affect several sensory and behavioral functions. Oxidative damage has been associated with post-seizure neuronal injury, thereby increasing an individual’s susceptibility to the occurrence of neurodegenerative disorders. The present study investigated the possible anticonvulsive and neuroprotective effects of organic and conventional yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), a plant rich in polyphenols, on pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced seizures in Wistar rats. The behavioral and polyphenolic profiles of the yerba mate samples were also evaluated. Infusions of yerba mate (50 mg/kg) or distilled water were given to rats for fifteen days by oral gavage. On the 15th day the animals were subjected to open field test, and exploratory behavior was assessed. Subsequently, 60 mg/kg PTZ (i.p.) was administered, and animals were observed for the appearance of convulsions for 30 min. Latency for the first seizure, tonic–clonic and generalized seizures time, frequency of seizures and mortality induced by PTZ were recorded. The animals were then sacrificed, and the cerebellum, cerebral cortex and hippocampus were quickly removed and frozen to study the neuroprotective effects of yerba mate. The oxidative damage in lipids and proteins, nitric oxide levels, the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (Sod) and catalase (Cat) and non-enzymatic cellular defense (sulfhydryl protein) were quantified in all the tissues. The results showed that organic and conventional yerba mate infusions were able to reduce the frequency of seizures when compared to the PTZ group. Besides, organic yerba mate infusion decreases the tonic–clonic seizures time in relation to the PTZ group. It was also shown that organic and conventional yerba mate infusions reduced the oxidative damage in lipids and proteins and nitric oxide levels and prevented the decrease in Sod and Cat activities and sulfhydryl protein content when compared to the PTZ group in all the CNS tissues assayed. Organic and conventional yerba mate commercial samples did not change the behavior (locomotion, exploration or anxiety) of the treated animals. In both organic and conventional infusions, the presence of the polyphenols rutin, chlorogenic acid and their acyl derivatives were detected, which could be associated with the biological effects observed. These data indicate that yerba mate may provide new perspectives for the development of therapeutic approaches with natural compounds in the pharmaceutical area, both to reduce the convulsions’ frequency and to minimize the neuronal damage associated with recurrent seizures.

A summary of the resource.
Psychrotrophic yeasts were isolated from Antarctic soils, selected based on their ability to grow in apple juice at low temperatures, and were evaluated as potential biocontrol agents for the management of postharvest diseases of apple during cold storage. Among the species recovered, an isolate of Leucosporidium scottii, designated At17, was identified as a good biocontrol agent for blue and gray mold of two apple cultivars. The selected isolate produced soluble and volatile antifungal substances that were inhibitory to apple pathogens. Siderophore production was also demonstrated, but it did not appear to play a role in pathogen inhibition. The selected yeast had the capacity to form a biofilm when grown in apple juice, which is considered an important attribute of postharvest antagonists to successfully colonize wounds and intact fruit surfaces. At17 was resistant to commonly used postharvest fungicides, so application of a combination of low-dose fungicide along with the biocontrol agent could be used as an integrated management practice.

Considering that the memory encoding of perceptual components of our experience involves systems that are associated with the perceptual mechanism, textural terms might be organized in consumers’ minds in relation to their perceptual experiences. The aim of this work was to better understand the semantic organization of texture characteristics for Spanish-speaking consumers, trying to obtain a meaningful word categorization, and to study differences between Spanish and Uruguayan consumers. Fifty-two Spanish consumers and 47 Uruguayan consumers were asked to sort 37 textural terms according to their own criteria and to write down a few words related to or describing each group. Spanish and Uruguayan consumers categorized the textural terms in the same way, suggesting that they might have developed the same memory structure. Nevertheless, differences were identified in terms of the number of groups used to classify the textural terms and the words used to describe them.

Las diversas fracciones resultantes del análisis granulométrico se han estudiado mediante métodos tales como R.X., A.T.D:, A.T.P., capacidad de intercambio de bases, etc.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
<p>La aglicona que se obtiene por hidrólisis del cernuósido - el glucósido amarillo de las flores de Oxalis cernun Thumb- es idéntico al 3-4-4-6 tetraoxi-benzaleumaranona (aureusidina), que ya había sido encontrado bajo la fotrma de glucçosido (aireusina) en las flores del Anthirrinum majus por Seikel y Geissman. El cernuósido, en cambio, aparece distinto a la aureusina por lo tanto el tercer caso en que se encuentra en la naturaleza la presencia de glucósidos de polioxi-benzaleumaranonas.</p>

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
We report the synthesis and evaluation as potential anticancer agents of a series of tetracyclic indenoquinolines. The compounds, which are obtained through the photoisomerization of Diels–Alder adducts formed between purpurogallin derivatives and nitrosobenzene, have in vitro antiproliferative activities in the lM to nM range against breast (MCF-7), lung epithelial (A-549), and cervical (HeLa) adenocarcinoma cells. The cytotoxicities of several of the novel tetracycles are comparable to or better than that of camptothecin. A strong correlation between the activity of the compounds and their aromaticity and planarity was observed, suggesting a mode of action similar to that of topoisomerase poisons
