En cinco aparatos de TU, tres de marca General Electric (128, 64 y 4 canales) y dos Siemens (64 y 2 canales). la región contral del fantoma fue irradiada de forma de obtener las dosis utilizando cámaras tipo lápiz. Películas radiocrómicas fueron posicionadas on la periferia y en la región central del fantorma para ser irradiadas con diversos prolocolos helicoidales de forma. de obser- var las distribuciones de dosis en cada una de estas regiones, luego de que las películas eran procesadas. Los resultados permitieron comparar los valores de los índicos de dosis obtenidos con cámara de jonización con los perfiles loneitadinales de variación de dosis registrados en las películas, El lomógralo 1 fue el que generó mayores valores de dosis mientras que el tomógrato 3 fue el que generó menores válores de dosis, A través del análisis de los resultados, fueron sugeridos tres protocolos optimi- zos para el tomósrato 1, amo para el tomósrato 2. tres para el tomógrafo 3, 1 para el tomógrafo 4 y dos para, el tomógrafo 3: Para lás adquisiciones pediálricas de niños de 2 años lensiones menores a 120 kW son las más recomendables, En caso de existir las lensiones 100 kY y SO kV, éstas son las más recomendables. La investigación científica en la Antártida se ha incrementado en los últimos años, fundamentalmente en áreas como microbiología, biología y oceanografía. Existen pocos reportes sobre los niveles de contaminantes inorgánicos y el impacto antrópico relacionado a ellos en el ecosistema. Al ser un territorio prácticamente virgen, es de particular interés realizar esta evaluación. En este trabajo se analizaron por primera vez y como primera aproximación al abordaje del tema seis muestras de aguas y seis muestras de suelos obtenidas en seis puntos de muestreo próximos a la base uruguaya en Antártida. Los elementos determinados para ambas matrices fueron: cromo, níquel, cobalto, arsénico, estroncio, cadmio, mercurio, plomo, uranio. En agua también se determinaron torio, estaño y antimonio. High frequency ultrasound can enhance olive oil extractability industrially. However, the ultrasound attenuation phenomena and their implications on extractability, are not well understood. This work aims at evaluating the ultrasound attenuation effects on the oil extraction efficiency, while providing deeper insights into the physics behind the ultrasound extraction in a heterogeneous medium. Olives were collected and processed both in Italy and Uruguay during their respective harvest seasons. Sound pressure distribution was characterized in a high frequency ultrasound reactor, carrying 3 kg of water or paste, by using an indirect contact hydrophone device at 0.4 MHz or 2 MHz. A through-transmission ultrasonic technique was applied to determine attenuation profiles and coefficients in paste at the central frequency of each transducer, with various paste to water ratios and reactor sizes. Other ultrasound improvements on extractability were evaluated including reduction of malaxation time (10, 30 min), sonication time (2.5, 5 min) and power level (174, 280 W) without water addition and in a reactor with a 14.5 cm transducer to wall distance. However, no sound pressure levels in paste were detectable beyond 9 cm from the transducer at both frequencies. Among the various effects evaluated, an emission frequency of 0.4 MHz better improved extractability compared to 2 MHz. The attenuation profiles corroborated these findings with attenuation coefficients of 3.9 and 5.3 dB/cm measured near the respective frequencies. Improvements in oil extractability due to increasing sonication time and power level were significant (p < 0.05) also when sonicating beyond 14.5 cm and without water addition. Oil extractability improvements were observed even when sound pressure was undetectable beyond 9 cm from the transducer, suggesting that the standing wave oil trapping effect is not the governing mechanism for separation in high attenuation media for large scale systems. The check-all-that-apply (CATA) question format and variants hereof have become very popular in sensory and consumer research. In the present study, focus is directed to rate-all-that-apply (RATA) questions where participants in addition to selecting terms that are applicable for describing a focal stimulus must also indicate if this term has an intensity corresponding to ‘low’, ‘medium’ or ‘high’. Knowledge of how assessors approach the RATA task is lacking, and this study was dedicated to understanding consumers’ visual attention to RATA questions. This aim was achieved by tracking participants’ eye movements when using a 15-term question to evaluate images of apples with different degrees of internal defect (flesh browning). As expected, participants first looked at the terms, then checked the box corresponding to “applies” and finally selected intensity level, i.e. participants tended to rate attribute intensity immediately after indicating that a term was applicable to describing a focal sample. Commensurate with the two parts to the task, preliminary evidence of more visual attention was suggestive of larger cognitive effort in RATA than CATA questions. Potentially this could be associated with a more “analytical” frame of mind among participants. More visual attention to the RATA question was associated with higher ability to discriminate among samples, in agreement with previous results for CATA questions. Overall, the research supported consumers’ ability to use RATA questions as intended, and indirectly to continued methodological uptake. In the current context of increasing worldwide concern about the prevalence of health problems related to high sodium intake, reducing the sodium content of food products has been identified as a cost-effective strategy to improve public health. The present work was aimed to assess the effect of salt reduction on consumers' perception, using white rice as case study. Particular emphasis was put on exploring individual differences in consumers' reaction towards salt reduction. A preliminary study, using a trained panel, was conducted to determine the difference threshold for salt in rice. The consumer study involved 156 consumers and encompassed three parts. First, consumers were presented with a 150 g portion of cooked rice prepared without added salt and were asked to indicate how much salt they would add to it (without tasting). Then, they were presented with six white rice samples differing in their salt content and were asked to indicate their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale, to asses adequacy of saltiness intensity using a 5-point just-about-right scale, and to indicate whether they would add salt to the rice. Finally, consumers completed a short survey about their salt consumption habits, interest in health and socio-demographic profile. As expected, results revealed large heterogeneity in consumers' hedonic reaction towards salt reduction: two consumer segments with different hedonic reaction were identified. Both consumer segments also differed in their hedonic sensitivity and tolerance to salt reduction in rice. Significant differences between consumer segments were found in their salt consumption habits, in particular related to salt addition to food, and also in their interest in reducing salt intake. These results suggest that eating habits might play a major role in shaping our preferences, highlighting the potential of gradual salt reduction as a strategy for reducing sodium intake. En promedio, el 53% de los encuestados indicaron que nunca experimentaron falta de alimentos para satisfacer sus necesidades en los últimos 12 meses. Esto sugiere que el hambre es un problema relevante en América Latina. La heterogeneidad en la región es amplia. Mientras que el porcentaje de personas que a menudo experimentaron falta de alimentos es del 2% para los países del sur de América Latina (Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay y Brasil), alcanza valores superiores al 10% para varios países de Centroamérica (Honduras, República Dominicana, Panamá, Nicaragua y Venezuela). Los resultados de los modelos mostraron que la edad, el nivel educativo, la situación laboral, la raza y la privación de bienes materiales en el hogar son determinantes importantes de la prevalencia del hambre. A major share of food waste is caused in consumer households. Globally, this share is expected to increase with growing middle classes in emerging countries. Consumer behaviour factors causing food waste differ across the various food handling stages from purchase to use, as well as for the individual and the specific situation in question. In order to tackle food waste in the household, knowledge on the type of food wasted, the cause of waste, and the situation in which it occurs is needed for different target groups. Little research so far has studied household consumer related food waste in emerging countries. This study explored food waste in consumer´s own accounts of a recent food waste incident in 540 Uruguayan households. It used a mixed-method approach composed of open-ended questions, which were analysed using content analysis. Differences in the frequency of mention of the identified categories between socioeconomic and sociodemographic groups were analysed. Results showed that leftovers and fresh vegetable and fruit were the categories most consumers recall wasting, and indicated that sub-optimality and prolonged storage were major reasons for discarding food. The higher the socioeconomic group, the greater the likelihood of wasting fresh produce, and the more often due to sub-optimality. Findings imply that avoidable food waste might increase with affluence levels. Public policies or collaborative public-private information or intervention campaigns directed at consumer households can more effectively contribute to decreasing food waste if targeted at the most relevant categories and causes of food waste. Background Humanity's current use of resources is not in line with the goal of sustainable development. Climate change impact scenarios appear worryingly pessimistic. The agricultural and food production accounts for a particularly high share of the impact, and this also holds for consumption of food. Transforming food consumption plays a crucial role in tackling the challenges, and sensory consumer science can contribute to this. Scope and approach This commentary examines what is required of the agricultural and food sector in order to sustainably transform, and outlines the current research streams in sensory consumer science from a sustainability perspective. Based on a comparison of the requirements and research, we suggest a categorization of the contributions that sensory consumer science can make to sustainable development. Key findings and conclusions Six necessary transformations to which sensory consumer science can make a contribution are derived and outlined: 1) promotion of a dietary shift towards more sustainable foods and diets, 2) increase of food diversity, 3) food waste reduction, 4) enhancement of the circularity of the food system, 5) heightening and prioritising food-related well-being, and 6) coping with the effects of climate change. So far, sensory consumer science studies have focused on foods regarded as sustainable (e.g. organic, sustainably claimed, insects and meat alternatives) as well as issues that contribute to sustainability (e.g. shelf-life, fruit and vegetable consumption, unfamiliar food). The conclusion for further future research is that designing sensory consumer science research to explicitly target the six required transformations can increase the discipline's contribution to sustainable development. Analysis The researchers used ANOVA to evaluate the influence of the experimental design's variables on perceived healthfulness and eye-tracking measures. Results Nutritional warnings caught participants’ attention and reduced the amount of visual attention needed to evaluate healthfulness. Participants mainly relied on nutritional warnings to make healthfulness judgments. Conclusions and Implications Findings of the current work confirm the potential of nutritional warnings to influence consumers’ healthfulness perception, overriding the effect of other label cues used by the food industry to convey the concept of healthfulness. Strategies to increase vegetable consumption that go beyond their health benefits and the recommendation to consume a specific number of portions a day are necessary. In this sense, a more in-depth understanding of what consumers consider as “vegetables” is of interest, as it can highlight possible mismatches between guidelines and everyday experiences and contribute to the design of public campaigns and interventions. In this context, the aim of the study were: to explore how the plant-based dish category is represented for consumers, to evaluate differences among consumers with different familiarity towards vegetables, to identify the sensory properties that drive typicality and expected liking, and to investigate the relationship between typicality of the dishes and their expected liking and sensory characteristics. One hundred and twenty three consumers were considered for the study. Consumers were characterized for their level of familiarity toward vegetables and pulses and through two psycho-attitudinal questionnaires: Food Neophobia Scale and Health and Taste Attitudes Questionnaire. A total of 80 pictures of plant-based dishes were evaluated to assess the expected liking, healthiness and preparation level of each dish. Consumers were asked to rate and the typicality of the dishes by rating their agreement with the sentence “This is a plant-based dish”. In addition, the sensory properties characterizing each dish were evaluated using Check-All-That-Apply question. Results indicated a graded structure of the plant-based dish category, with some category members more typical than others. Specific recipe typologies, such as salads and boiled vegetables, were perceived as more typical than others, such as soups and fried vegetables. Expected sensory attributes were found to influence the typicality of a dish. The attributes Bitter, Green, Not very intense flavor, Orange, Sour and Watery positively influenced typicality, while Brown and Creamy negatively influenced it. Typicality affected expected liking for the dishes but its influence depended on consumers’ level of familiarity toward vegetables and pulses. In fact, among consumers with a low level of familiarity, the lower the typicality, the higher the expected liking. A less strong association was found among consumers with a high level of familiarity. These results stress that promotion of vegetable consumption targeted to vegetables dislikers should therefore consider their representation of the category, in order to limit the exposure to features with a negative hedonic value. In this work we present the comprehensive design of lithium titanate nanotubes (LiTNT) as semiconductors for DSSC photoanodes. The synthesis and characterization of Li1.82Na0.18Ti3O7.nH2O nanotubes was performed and a prototype of cell using this material was assembled. The cell exhibited a 7.7% efficiency and a relatively high open circuit voltage, Voc = 0.72 V. In comparison with previously obtained hydrogen titanate nanotubes (HTNT), improvements have been achieved, like better charge carriers’ lifetime and lower series resistance. In order to study this system, we carried out previous DFT simulations for this lithium titanate nanotubes through different model's complexity levels which were able to correctly predict its properties. Due to the improvements achieved this system would encourage further studies with the aim to explore its potential for solar cells applications. The bronze bug, Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero & Dellapé (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae), is an exotic emerging pest in Eucalyptus commercial forests in South America, Africa, and southern Europe. Information on the chemical communication system and reproductive ecology of this insect is scant, and it may be relevant for designing management strategies for eucalypt plantations. Males emit large amounts of 3-methyl-2-butenyl butyrate, which attracts conspecific adult males but not females. To learn more about the biological function of this putative male-produced pheromone, we quantified this compound in volatile emissions collected from males, females, and couples, in three 4-h collecting periods during the morning, afternoon, and night of a single 24-h cycle. Our results showed that virgin males emit 3-methyl-2-butenyl butyrate in a diel time pattern, with an almost sevenfold difference between the afternoon emission peak compared to morning or night hours. In addition, we show that in the presence of females, males emit the compound in the same amounts throughout the photocycle. While a definite function cannot yet be attributed to the emission of 3-methyl-2-butenyl butyrate by T. peregrinus males, our findings point to an intraspecific function, possibly one related to male–male competition.
