Winemaking industry produces large amounts of by-products (grape pomace or marc) every year, making necessary a sustainable management of such waste. Among red wines, Tannat variety possesses a unique polyphenolic profile. Consequently, the study of the bioactive properties of its by-product and the extraction optimization of its bioactive compounds is of great interest to state its health promoting potential. In this study, different extraction processes were tested: maceration with ethanol (95%), ultrasound-assisted ethanolic extraction optimization with surface methodology, ultrasound-assisted aqueous extraction, and hydro-alcoholic-acid extraction (EHAA). Using this last extraction procedure, higher polyphenolic content (11.459 ± 1.048 g GAE/100 g of dry extract), monomeric anthocyanins (2.030 ± 0.085 g Cyd/100 g of dry extract), antioxidant capacity (0.474 ± 0.036 mg/mL for ABTS and 0.715 ± 0.063 µmol TE/mg of dry extract for ORAC-FL), α-glucosidase (IC50 888.5 ± 79.3 µg/mL), and pancreatic lipase inhibition capacity (IC50 2431.0 ± 79.9 µg/mL) were found on Tannat grape skin. Considering as a whole, these results may imply a great antidiabetic and antiobesity potential. Moreover, EHAA showed to have anti-inflammatory capacity (IC50 587 µg/mL) on RAW 264.7 cells. In summary, EHAA possesses great potential as a functional ingredient for prevention and/or treatment of chronic diseases.

El estudio de nuevos radiotrazadores para PET es un área mundialmente muy activa que requiere de un trabajo multidisciplinario y que implica desde la selección de los blancos moleculares, la síntesis orgánica, la marcación utilizando metodologías automatizadas que minimicen la irradiación del operador y el desarrollo de metodologías de evaluación fisicoquímica y biológicas compatibles con los cortos períodos de semidesintegración de los radionucleidos. Dentro de éstos últimos, el 11C ocupa un lugar fundamental por sus ventajas, pero también por sus limitaciones. El 11C permite realizar marcaciones isotópicas, con lo cual se logran radiotrazadores sin modificaciones fisicoquímicas significativas respecto a las moléculas endógenas cuyo metabolismo se desea estudiar. Por otra parte, el 11C puede ser obtenido con buenos rendimientos en los ciclotrones comercialmente disponibles, y su radioquímica ha sido bien estudiada y desarrollada a lo largo de las cuatro últimas décadas. La principal limitante de su uso radica fundamentalmente en el corto período de semidesintegración (20.4 minutos), y es lo que supone un desafío para el radioquímico que desarrolla métodos de marcación con 11C. La metodología más utilizada para introducir 11C en moléculas orgánicas a ser utilizadas como radiotrazadores PET, es a través de reacciones de 11C-metilación con los precursores radiactivos secundarios [11C]CH3I o [11C]CH3OTf. Estos precursores están disponibles en plataformas comerciales, su radioquímica ha sido bien estudiada y por ello su utilización es mundialmente muy amplia. Un gran número de radiotrazadores PET se sintetizan utilizando estos dos precursores radioactivos, y a la fecha se utilizan para la producción de todos los radiofármacos de 11C en uso preclínico y clínico en el Centro Uruguayo de Imagenología Molecular (CUDIM). Sin embargo, su aplicabilidad está limitada a moléculas nucleofílicas conteniendo los heteroátomos O, N o S. Otros precursores tales como el [11]CO2, [11C]CO, o el [11C]CN- permiten la obtención de moléculas marcadas en otros grupos funcionales, con lo que se amplía el espectro de estructuras conteniendo 11C y las aplicaciones de las mismas. Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior, es que en el presente trabajo se plantea la posibilidad de trabajar en el CUDIM con precursores de 11C alternativos a [11C]CH3I o [11C]CH3OTf. Como punto de partida del trabajo se propuso al [11C]CN- (comúnmente referido como [11C]HCN o [11C]NH4CN) como precursor radiactivo. En la Química Orgánica tradicional, el anión CN- es un sintón atractivo, pues permite la formación de un enlace C-C por sustitución nucleofílica sobre estructuras que presenten la función C-X (X = halógeno u otros grupos salientes). El grupo nitrilo también está presente en un importante número de fármacos y compuestos de interés biológico. El uso del precursor [11C]CN- permite obtener radiotrazadores atractivos para el diagnóstico mediante PET de alteraciones metabólicas y otros fenómenos patológicos. La síntesis de moléculas de importancia bioquímica tales como 1-[11C]aminoácidos 1-[11C]glucosa, 1-[11C]ácidos grasos, entre otros ha sido descrita en la literatura. CUDIM cuenta con una plataforma automatizada (módulo ProCab®) capaz de convertir químicamente el [11C]CO2 en [11C]CN-, por lo que el trabajo comenzó realizando un estudio de algunas variables de la producción de este precursor en nuestra plataforma. Se 20 determinó que la robustez de la misma depende fundamentalmente de su frecuencia de uso, y de finos ajustes en parámetros físicos tales como el flujo de los gases utilizados. En condiciones optimizadas, el módulo ProCab® es capaz de transformar [11C]CO2 en [11C]CN- con un rendimiento radioquímico de aproximadamente 30% (corregido) en no más de 10 minutos. El [11C]CN- así producido, se utilizó en un sistema modelo de reactividad, lográndose obtener D,L-1-[11C]Fenilalanina, utilizando para la misma una plataforma automatizada TRACERlab® FX C Pro. En una segunda etapa, se trabajó con [11C]CO2 como precursor radiactivo, de acuerdo a la metodología comúnmente conocida como “fijación-reducción de [11C]CO2”. La radioquímica de fijación o incorporación de [11C]CO2 es un terreno fértil para la obtención eficiente de radiotrazadores PET, al punto que es referida por algunos reconocidos investigadores como el “Renacimiento de la Química PET”. Tradicionalmente, el uso de [11C]CO2 se encontraba limitado a la reacción de Grignard para la síntesis de ácidos 11C-carboxílicos. Aun cuando esta técnica ha sido y es extensamente empleada, posee desventajas en cuanto a la inestabilidad inherente de los precursores orgánicos empleados, y la escasa variabilidad estructural de los radiotrazadores obtenidos. Recientemente ha habido avances significativos en la incorporación de 11C en moléculas orgánicas utilizando [11C]CO2, para dar estructuras moleculares tales como ureas, carbamatos, oxazolidinonas y ácidos carboxílicos, o su incorporación y posterior reducción para obtener especies N-11C-metiladas. Dado el alto número de radiofármacos de uso clínico que poseen el grupo 11C-metilo, se considera muy ventajoso sintetizarlos a partir de [11C]CO2 en lugar de los agentes 11C-metilantes tradicionales ([11C]MeI o [11C]MeOTf). El uso directo de [11C]CO2 y de modalidades de reacción “one-pot” minimiza el número de pasos sintéticos, y presupone un aumento de los rendimientos de síntesis, lo que se traduce en una mayor actividad final disponible para estudios preclínicos o clínicos. En tal sentido, se propuso estudiar condiciones para llevar a cabo y optimizar reacciones de incorporación de [11C]CO2 y su posterior reducción con el fin de contar con metodologías eficientes aplicables a la síntesis de 11C-radiotrazadores. Para el trabajo con [11C]CO2 se utilizó también la plataforma automatizada TRACERlab®, con mínimas modificaciones de tal manera de dirigir el [11C]CO2 purificado a un reactor de marcación. Se estudió la fisicoquímica de su captura en solución. Se evaluaron tres sistemas radioquímicos para promover la incorporación reductiva de [11C]CO2 en un sistema modelo de reactividad compuesto por 4-toluidina: i) DBU / PhSiH3, ii) IPr carbeno / PhSiH3 y iii) TBAF / PhSiH3. Para cada uno de ellos se estudió la influencia de factores físicos y químicos, tanto en la pureza radioquímica de la amina 11C-metilada como en su rendimiento radioquímico. Dos de ellos (IPr / PhSiH3 y TBAF / PhSiH3) se aplicaron a la síntesis del radiotrazador PET [11C]PiB. Mediante el uso de [11C]CO2 / TBAF / PhSiH3 en diglyme, a 150 ºC por 1 min, se logró marcar [11C]PiB en un 14.8% de rendimiento radioquímico, con actividad molar de 61 GBq/μmol. Si bien este valor es aparentemente bajo por el uso directo de [11C]CO2, el rendimiento radioquímico del [11C]PiB producido de esta forma duplica al del método de 11C-metilación con [11C]CH3OTf actualmente utilizado en CUDIM. Flavobacterium sp. AUG42 is a cellulase-producing bacterium isolated from the Antarctic oligochaete Grania sp. (Annelida). In this work, we report that AUG42 produces a glycoside hydrolase cocktail with CMCase, PASCase and cellobiase activities (optimum pHs and temperatures ranging from 5.5 to 6.5 and 40 to 50 °C, respectively). The time-course analyses of the bacterial growth and cellulase production showed that the cocktail has maximal activity at the stationary phase when growing at 16 °C with filter paper as a cellulosic carbon source, among the tested substrates. The analyses of the CAZome and the identification of secreted proteins by shotgun Mass Spectrometry analysis showed that five glycoside hydrolyses are present in the bacterial secretome, which probably cooperate in the degradation of the cellulosic substrates. Two of these glycoside hydrolyses may harbor putative carbohydrate binding modules, both with a cleft-like active site. The cellulolytic cocktail was assayed in saccharification experiments using carboxymethylcellulose as a substrate and results showed the release of glucose (a fermentable sugar) and other reducing-sugars, after 24 h incubation. The ecological relevance of producing cellulases in the Antarctic environment, as well as their potential use in the bio-refinery industry, are discussed.

A summary of the resource.
The performance of a group of density functional methods of progressive complexity for the description of the ClO bond in a series of chlorine oxides was investigated. The simplest ClO radical species as well as the two isomeric structures XClO/ClOX for each X=H, Cl and O were studied using the PW91, TPSS, B3LYP, PBE0, M06, M06-2X, BMK and B2PLYP functionals. Geometry optimizations as well as reaction enthalpies and enthalpies of formation for each species were calculated using Pople basis sets and the (aug)-cc-pVnZ Dunning sets, with n=2-6. For the calculation of enthalpies of formation, atomization as well as isodesmic reactions were employed. Both the precision of the methods with respect to the increase of the basis sets, as well as their accuracy, were gauged by comparing the results with the more accurate CCSD(T) calculations, performed using the same basis sets as for the DFT methods. The results obtained employing composite chemical methods (G4, CBS-QB3 and W1BD) were also used for the comparisons, as well as the experimental results when they are available. The results obtained show that error compensation is the key for successful description of molecular properties (geometries and energies) by carefully selecting method and basis sets. In general, expansion of the one-electron basis set to the limit of completeness does not improve results at the DFT level, but just the opposite. The enthalpies of formation calculated at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV6Z for the species considered are generally in agreement with experimental determinations, and the most accurate derived theoretically up to present. Different sources of error in the calculations are discussed in detail.

A summary of the resource.
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are multi-domains proteins, belonging to the superfamily of nuclear receptors, which mainly act as ligand-activated transcription factors. A variety of lipophilic molecules, including long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and eicosanoids, are capable of binding to PPAR, although the nature of the physiological ligands is still under debate. PPARs regulate the expression of a set of genes involved in glucose and lipid metabolism as well as in the control of inflammatory responses. Herein we review the main molecular and cellular events associated with the activation of PPARs and their effects on metabolism.

A summary of the resource.
El glicerol es un subproducto inevitable de la producción de biodiésel. Una gran cantidad de este producto es generado durante la transesterificación de grasas y aceites con alcohol. El exceso de oferta y la limitada demanda de este producto afectan directamente los costos de producción del biodiésel. Sin embargo, el glicerol puede ser convertido a productos de más alto valor agregado mediante procesos puramente químicos o mediante biotransformaciones. Los bioprocesos verdes, tales como las reacciones biocatalíticas, son capaces de modificar selectivamente sustratos polifuncionales debido a su alta eficiencia catalítica, selectividad inherente y fácil o nulo procesamiento downstream. Además, las biotransformaciones se realizan bajo condiciones suaves con menores requerimientos energéticos, ofreciendo tecnologías medioambientalmente limpias. Las nuevas tendencias en bioconversiones marcan el acoplamiento de procesos biocatalíticos enzimáticos a procesos fermentativos como una solución de gran potencial en la biosíntesis secuencial de productos biotecnológicos. En esta tesis se propuso una ruta biosintética mixta novedosa para la síntesis de ácido L-láctico a partir de glicerol crudo, subproducto de la industria del biodiésel. Nuestro enfoque incluyó el uso de biocatalizadores inmovilizados microbiológicos y enzimáticos mediante estrategias que aportaron estabilidad y la posibilidad de reutilización en aras de conversiones más verdes y económicas.

Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions are – with Polar Regions, mountains and the deep sea – the most extreme environments on Earth because of its low temperatures, dryness, high incidence of solar radiation and low nutrient availability. Nevertheless, microorganisms have successfully colonized these regions. In this study, culturable yeasts from soil samples collected from two different locations, a human-impacted area (Encerrada Bay) and a largely pristine and naturally vegetated area near Lago Escondido city (54°39′0″S, 67°46′48″W) from Tierra del Fuego province, Argentina were identified and characterized at different levels. They were characterized and classified as psychrotolerant and were considered as moderately halotolerant because of their ability to grow in the presence of 1.5 M of NaCl. Yeasts from phylum Ascomycota were affiliated to five genera: Candida, Yarrowia, Debaryomyces, Nadsonia, and Wickerhamiella, whereas from phylum Basidiomycota yeasts were affiliated to six genera: Naganishia, Rhodotorula, Leucosporidum, Tausonia, Cystofilobasidium, and Apiotrichum. Most of the yeasts demonstrated at least one extracellular enzymatic activity (mainly β-glucosidase, esterase, and protease activities). One isolate identified as Tausonia pullulans showed significant activity across the eight enzyme types tested. In light of these findings, Tierra del Fuego province could be considered as a cold environment with a potential source of cold-adapted yeasts producing industrially relevant cold-active enzymes.

Peptides isolated from phage display libraries are powerful reagents for small-molecule immunoassay; however, their application as phage-borne peptides is significantly limited by the biological nature of the phage. Here, we present the use of lysine scaffold to prepare a series of different valence peptides to serve as replacements for phage-borne peptides. Benzothiostrobin was selected as a model analyte, the cyclic benzothiostrobin-peptidomimetic in the form of monomer, dendrimer-like dimer, and tetramer were designed and synthesized. Compared with the monomer, the affinity of dendrimer-like dimer and tetramer increased 1.87 and 13.6 times, respectively, as determined by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). A novel inner filter effect immunoassay (IFE-IA) with positive readout was developed for benzothiostrobin detection utilizing the peptidomimetics attached to upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as energy donor and monoclonal antibody (mAb)-labeled urchin-like gold nanoflowers (AuNFs) as energy absorber, respectively. The sensitivity of the assay based on dendrimer-like tetramer was approximately 6 and 3 times higher than monomer and dendrimer-like dimer, respectively. After optimization, 50% saturation of the signal (SC50) and detection range (SC10 to SC90) of the IFE-IA based on dendrimer-like tetramer were 11.81 ng mL–1 and 2.04–106.17 ng mL–1, respectively. The IFE-IA also shows good accuracy for the detection of benzothiostrobin in authentic samples.

La eutrofización de los ambientes acuáticos promueve la proliferación de cianobacterias, que producen una amplia variedad de compuestos altamente tóxicos para animales, las cianotoxinas. En Uruguay, los principales sistemas acuáticos (Río Negro, Río Uruguay y Río de la Plata) están seriamente afectados por floraciones de cianobacterias de géneros productores de microcistinas. Estas cianotoxinas son heptapéptidos cíclicos de elevada toxicidad, que interfieren en los principales usos del agua: producción de agua potable, recreación, producción agropecuaria, pesca, entre otros. Para evaluar y gestionar los riesgos asociados, se requieren métodos sencillos, rápidos y validados, que viabilicen su determinación a bajo costo. En esta tesis se desarrolló y validó un kit de ELISA sencillo y robusto, basado en anticuerpos policlonales, que ha permitido monitorear microcistinas en aguas de embalses y playas. Los resultados evidenciaron en espumas cianobacterianas, concentraciones extremadamente elevadas de microcistinas (>1000 veces el límite para agua recreacional), que impulsaron el uso de la bandera sanitaria y sustentaron la detección visual de colonias cianobacterianas dispersas y espumas, como un criterio simple de alerta para la toma de decisiones rápidas en la gestión de playas. En una segunda etapa se avanzó en la estandarización de la inmunodetección, generando anticuerpos monoclonales de llama (Nanobodies), implementando estrategias novedosas de selección para aislar los clones de mayor desempeño analítico. Esto posibilitó el desarrollo de un ELISA de segunda generación sensible y con elevada selectividad. Ambos ensayos se han validado rigurosamente y comparado con métodos analíticos de referencia como LC-MS/MS. El nuevo anticuerpo viabilizó el desarrollo de un ensayo inmunocromatográfico en tiras, que se realiza en minutos en el sitio de interés y es adecuado para analizar aguas ambientales y potables. Para generar mayor información sobre la presencia de congéneres individuales de microcistinas, se desarrollaron métodos de MALDI-TOF cualitativos, y posteriormente cuantitativos incorporando estándares internos de síntesis sencilla. Finalmente, utilizando uno de los nanobodies biotinilado in vivo se generó un inmunoadsorbente equipado con estándar interno, que permite el análisis directo de estas toxinas por MALDI-TOF posibilitando su cuantificación ultrasensible en muestras de agua y matrices biológicas complejas

Durante el presente siglo se alcanzará el pico máximo de producción de petróleo a nivel mundial. A partir de ese máximo, la producción de petróleo comenzará a declinar dada la gran dependencia que tiene la humanidad de este recurso fósil no renovable. Evitar que la disminución en la producción de petróleo tenga un gran impacto a nivel mundial requiere encontrar una fuente alternativa de materia prima. La principal fuente de materia prima renovable que puede sustituir al petróleo es la biomasa. Algunos de los inconvenientes que se presentan al momento de sustituir el petróleo por biomasa son la ausencia de tecnologías eficientes para su procesamiento y la gran variabilidad que presenta la biomasa en relación a sus características (densidad, contenido de humedad, composición química). La gran variabilidad de la biomasa implica la necesidad de conocer en profundidad sus propiedades, si se busca desarrollar tecnologías eficientes y ajustar los procesos industriales a las peculiaridades de esta materia prima. El presente trabajo se dirige en esta dirección dado que su objetivo es la caracterización de biomasa nacional, para lo cual se eligió biomasa proveniente de especies forestales utilizadas en plantaciones comerciales y especies provenientes del monte indígena. Las especies elegidas provenientes de plantaciones forestales son, Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus dunnii (Myrtaceae) y un híbrido de estas. Por otro lado las especies provenientes del monte nativo seleccionadas fueron Prosopis affinis y Prosopis nigra (Fabaceae). Para las muestras de corteza de Eucalyptus spp. y Prosopis spp. se determinó la composición química y la estructura de la lignina de las especies seleccionadas de ambos géneros. Se observó que el contenido de glucanos para las muestras de Eucalyptus se encuentra en el rango de 40 a 48%, el de xilanos de 11 a 13% y el de lignina en el entorno del 20%. Al estudiar la estructura de la lignina extraída de las tres muestras se observó una relación S/G en el entorno de 2.6. Para la corteza de Prosopis se determinó un contenido de lignina en el rango de 40 a 50%. El tipo de lignina corresponde a HGS con una relación H:G:S de 30:54:16 para Prosopis affinis y 21:60:19 para Prosopis nigra. La aislación y elucidación estructural de los alcaloides en las cortezas de ambas especies permitieron identificar los siguientes compuestos 6-isocassina en corteza de P. nigra y N-metil-2-isocassina, N-metil-6-isocassina y N-metil-6-isocarnavalina en corteza de P. affinis. Los resultados obtenidos permitieron generar información que no se encontraba disponible en el país con relación a la composición química de un residuo muy importante, como lo son las cortezas de las dos especies forestales más importantes de las plantaciones comerciales del Uruguay y a dos especies provenientes del monte nativo. Los datos generados en el presente trabajo podrán servir de insumo para determinar los posibles usos de las cortezas de las especies estudiadas.

A summary of the resource.
The present work reports a new group of heterogeneous catalysts with a 3D structure, CuLnIDA, {[Cu3Ln2(IDA)6]·8H2O} (Ln: LaIII, GdIII or YbIII), with an organic linker (H2IDA: iminodiacetic acid). Different sets of O2 pressure and time were used in order to obtain the optimal reaction conditions at 75 °C. The reaction was found to depend on the [aldehyde]/[substrate] ratio. The best results, with a conversion of 73% for CuLaIDA as the catalyst, were obtained for the smallest ratio of 0.2. Finally, the importance of the pore size was analysed by comparing the catalytic activity of the as formed catalyst with that of the thermally activated one. The conversion increased ca. 26–35% for the different catalysts when they were previously activated. In addition, the selectivity increased towards cyclohexenone. The use of molecular oxygen as the oxidizing agent in a system where an auxiliary solvent is not used, as the cyclohexene substrate and products play the role of a solvent, permitted us to generate a more friendly environmental system for the oxidation of cycloalkenes under mild conditions.

Herein, we performed a theoretical investigation of the reactivities of graphene and 2D-BN. The results indicate that 2D-BN can display chemistry comparable to that of graphene. As observed experimentally, we found that the addition of carbenes, nitrenes and amines is possible. In addition, [2+2] cycloadditions are more likely to occur on 2D-BN rather than on graphene, while the 1,3 cycloaddition of azomethine ylides is also possible. The nitrogen atoms tend to be less reactive than the boron ones. Nevertheless, this situation is modified once a boron atom is functionalized. Indeed, if two fluorine atoms are added to a BN sheet, they prefer to be attached on a BN bond, in place of two boron atoms. This result opens the possibility to synthesize fully hydrogenated, fluorinated or hydroxylated 2D-BN. Although great efforts have been made to explore to chemistry of 2D-BN, there is much more room to expand its chemistry.

A summary of the resource.
By means of first principles calculations we investigated the occurrence of cycloaddition reactions on a buffer layer of graphene on silicon carbide. We found that there is a strong correlation between the number and position of the interface bonds and the cycloaddition products. In contrast with results obtained for freestanding graphene, we found that for a buffer layer of epitaxial graphene, the unusual 1,3 cycloaddition of benzynes was preferred over the [4+2] and [2+2] paths. We show that the bonds formed between graphene and the substrate guide the chemical processes occurring on graphene. In turn, the chemical reactivity of supported graphene can be completely different as compared with freestanding graphene, making unfavorable processes the preferred ones. We expect that the results presented open a new direction to attain chemical functionalization of graphene.

Poly(amidoamine) and Poly(propylenimine) dendrimers with different generations and peripheral groups were studied as solubility enhancers and nanocarriers for 7-bromo-2-hydroxy-phenazine N5,N10-dioxide. This compound possesses potential antitumoral and anti-trypanosomal activity, but its low solubility in physiological media precludes its possible application as therapeutic drug. The amino terminated dendrimers association with the active compounds as observed trough NMR studies showed that electrostatic interactions are essential in the solubilization enhancement process. The obtaining of a stable and no cytotoxic formulation makes the drug-carried association a suitable strategy for the generation of a drug delivery system for phenazine derivatives.

Immunochromatographic strips (ICS) attract much attention as practical analytical tools, particularly for point of care testing. However, ICS suffer from insufficient sensitivity, especially for small molecules. Competitive assays developed with analyte peptidomimetics obtained from phage display peptide libraries, usually enable to attain lower detection limits than the widely used chemical haptens, but are rarely used in ICS assay because of the shortcomings of the phage particle. In this work, we used a phage-free fluorescent peptide tracer (C2-15-EmGFP) for ICS, which consists of the emerald green fluorescent protein (EmGFP) fused to a peptidomimetic of imidaclothiz (C2-15). C2-15-EmGFP works as fluorescent donor and colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) coated with an anti-imidaclohtiz antibody as quencher, which allowed to develop a fluorescence quenching-based ICS (FQICS) for the detection of imidaclothiz in agricultural and environmental samples. The colorimetric and fluorescent signals were determined by both naked eye and imageJ software. Quantitative image analysis showed that the sensitivities obtained using the colorimetric (50% inhibitory concentration (IC50): 9.62 ng mL−1) and fluorescent (50% saturation concentration (SC50): 10.1 ng mL−1) signals were similar. The visual detection by the naked eye showed a sensitivity of 8.00 ng mL−1 with fluorescent readout which was 8-fold lower than that of the colorimetric readout (64.0 ng mL−1). The FQICS performed with excellent recoveries and good correlation with high-performance liquid chromatography in different matrices.

A new type of organic–inorganic hybrid precursor to mixed-halide optical materials is described by using Ba5(CF2ClCOO)10·7H2O as an example. This heterohaloacetate belongs to the family of extended inorganic hybrids in which metal connectivity in three dimensions is achieved via metal–organooxygen–metal bridges. Thermolysis in the solid state and in solution yield crystalline BaFCl at temperatures below 300 °C. Chlorodifluoromethyl groups act as chlorine and fluorine source, making the organic moiety a de facto single-source precursor for the anionic portion of the target mixed halide. Solution thermolysis in the presence of Yb3+–Er3+ sensitizing–activator pairs yields rare-earth-doped BaFCl nanocrystals capable of NIR-to-visible photon upconversion. Analyses of the composition, morphology, structure, and luminescence of these nanocrystals demonstrate that heterohalocetates serve as dual halogen sources for mixed-halide optical materials. Findings presented in this article enlarge the synthetic toolbox to access mixed halides at temperatures compatible with solution synthesis and processing.

La4BaCu5-xMnxO13+δ materials have been synthesized by the sol-gel method in air and studied as possible electrode materials for symmetrical Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (S-SOFC). Within the series, La4BaMn5O13+δ (LBMn) exhibits an excellent stability in reducing atmosphere and remarkable redox stability, although a structure transition from rhombohedral to cubic perovskite structure is found beyond 500 °C in air or wet diluted hydrogen. The thermal expansion coefficients (TEC), deduced from HT-XRD study during redox cycling, make the manganite compatible with classical SOFC electrolytes at low temperature; however, relatively high values of 15.8(5) and 18.1(2) K−1 are found in cathode and anode conditions for T > 500 °C. With high electrical conductivities of 178 and 33.3 S cm−1, in air and hydrogen at 800 °C, we demonstrate that the La0.8Ba0.2MnO3±δ manganite fulfils all the preliminary requirements of an electrode material for symmetrical SOFC.
