Labels have been reported to influence children’s perception and choice of foods. However, the influence of label information on parents’ food choices for their children has not received as much attention in the literature yet. In this context, the objectives of the present study were: i) to evaluate the impact of label information on parents’ healthiness perception and choice of two popular snack products, and ii) to explore individual differences in how label design influences parents’ healthiness perception and their choice of snack products for their children. A total of 1213 Uruguayan mothers participated in an online survey. A choice-based conjoint test was performed to study the influence of cartoon characters, nutritional claims and nutrient content information on the choice and healthiness perception of chocolate milk and sponge cake labels. Half of the parents were asked to indicate which of the products they would choose as a snack for their children and the other half were asked which of the products was healthier. Data was analyzed by means of a Mixed Logit Model followed by multivariate approaches to explore individual differences (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis). Results showed that, regardless of the product, nutrient claim had the strongest effect, increasing healthiness perception and encouraging mothers’ choice. For both choice and healthiness perception, two groups of mothers who differed in the relative importance attached to cartoon characters and nutrient content were identified, highlighting the need to investigate individual differences. Results stress the need to regulate the use of nutritional claims, cartoon characters, and other persuasive elements in products of poor nutritional quality targeted at children.

Sensory scientists have adapted several sensory methods to fit children's cognitive abilities. Although several discrimination methods have been reported with children, the A-not-A test has not been studied yet. The aims of this work were to: (i) evaluate the feasibility of using the A-Not-A test with school aged children, and (ii) compare how the framing of the question (overall differences vs. differences in liking) may influence the<br />results. A total of 126 children were involved in the study. They participated in three sessions, each composed of a familiarization task with a visual stimuli and sample tasting with<br />one of three dairy products (vanilla milk desserts, chocolate-flavored milk, and vanillaflavored yogurt). Half of the children evaluated the samples in terms of overall differences and the other half in terms of differences in liking. Results from the familiarization step showed that children correctly identified the visual reference in the A-not-A test regardless of how the question was framed, suggesting that they were able to understand the methodology. In the case of tasting samples, children were significantly more likely to correctly identify the reference in two of the three studied dairy products, when the question was based on liking, as compared to the framing based on overall differences.

Commercially available immunoassays for assessment of anti-streptolysin-O antibodies use native streptolysin- O obtained by a complex process. We prepared a biologically active recombinant streptolysin-O with higher yield and a simpler purification process. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay developed with this recombinant showed good correlation with a commercial test, suggesting that it could be suitable for immunoassays.

A summary of the resource.
The synthesis and microbiological evaluation of two new Ag(I) complexes with sulfamoxole (SMX), [Ag2(SMX)2]·H2O and [Ag4(SCN)3(SMX)]·H2O are described. Both were characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, Raman and experimental and theoretical IR spectroscopies. Their antibacterial and antifungal properties were evaluated by agar and broth dilution assays, respectively. In addition, synergism tests for Pseudomonas aeruginosa were performed, and genotoxicity studies were carried out employing the Allium cepa test. Both complexes displayed good activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, P. aeruginosa, and 10 fungi strains, with lower minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) than that of free SMX in all cases. The nanometrical crystallite particle size determined from XRPD, DLS and TEM might explain the good microbiological activity in spite of the low solubility of both complexes. The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) calculated from the P. aeruginosa test data indicated that the activity of the complexes is not due to synergism of the free components in the concentration ratios studied. Moreover, none of the complexes displayed cytotoxic effects on onions in the concentration range tested, and chromosome aberrations were not observed.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A simple version of a composite scheme is described, based on a combination of density functional geometry and frequencies evaluation, valence energies obtained using the CCSD(T)-f12 method extrapolated to the complete basis set limit, and core-valence correlation corrections employing the MP2 method. The procedure was applied to the 38 reactions in Truhlar’s HTBH38/08 and NHTBH38/08 databases. Mean unsigned deviation (MUD) for the complete set of 68 independent barriers is 0.43 kcal mol-1, compared to 1.37 kcal/mol for G4 and 1.69 kcal/mol for the dispersioncorrected M06-2X method. Its accuracy is also better that that of other calculations using composite methods of similar cost. The MUD of the new scheme on the barriers in the DBH24/08 subset (12 out of the 38 reactions in both other sets) is 0.31 kcal mol-1, better than that obtained at the expensive CCSD(T,full)/aug-cc-pCV(T+d)Z level (0.46 kcal mol-1) and comparable to the most exact (and costly) Wn calculations (MUD=0.14 kcal mol-1). The maximum unsigned deviation (MaxUD) of the new method for all the reactions studied is 1.71 kcal/mol. G4 and M06-2X, on the other side, exhibit MaxUDs of 6.7 and 8.4 kcal/mol respectively

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is the main organosulfur compound in the atmosphere. Oxidation by OH radicals to form the methyl thiomethyl species (MTMr) has been studied under normal atmospheric conditions and in reaction chambers at different O2 partial pressure, including complete absence of oxygen. Scarce attention has been devoted however to the possibility of further reaction of OH with MTMr. We present here a computational study using DFT, CCSD(T) and composite methods, on the properties of two stable intermediates never fully investigated before, methanesulfenyl methanol (MSMOH) and S-methyl-methanesulfenic acid (SMMSA), arising from addition of a second OH radical to MTMr.

A set of aryloxy-quinones, previously synthesized and evaluated against Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes cultures, were found more potent and selective than nifurtimox. One of the possible mechanisms of the trypanocidal activity of these quinones could be inhibition of trypanothione reductase (TR). Considering that glutathione reductase (GR) is the equivalent of TR in humans, biochemical, kinetic, and molecular docking studies in TR and GR were envisaged and compared with the trypanocidal and cytotoxic data of a set of aryloxy-quinones. Biochemical assays indicated that three naphthoquinones (Nq-h, Nq-g, and Nq-d) selectively inhibit TR and the TR kinetic analyses indicated that Nq-h inhibit TR in a noncompetitive mechanism. Molecular dockings were performed in TR and GR in the following three putative binding sites: the catalytic site, the dimer interface, and the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-binding site. In TR and GR, the aryloxy-quinones were found to exhibit high affinity for a site near it cognate-binding site in a place in which the noncompetitive kinetics could be justified. Taking as examples the three compounds with TR specificity (TRS) (Nq-h, Nq-g, and Nq-d), the presence of a network of contacts with the quinonic ring sustained by the triad of Lys62, Met400′, Ser464′ residues, seems to contribute hardly to the TRS. Compound Nq-b, a naphthoquinone with nitrophenoxy substituent, proved to be the best scaffold for the design of trypanocidal compounds with low toxicity. However, the compound displayed only a poor and non-selective effect toward TR indicating that TR inhibition is not the main reason for the antiparasitic activity of the aryloxy-quinones. Extration washout and chemical integrity of technetium(I) hexakis(2-carbomethoxy-2-isocyanopropane) |b (99mTc-CPI) were evaluated in isolated contractile rat atrial tissue. The observations in these rat atrial tissue help explain the interspecies differences in biodistribution of 99mTc-CPI and support the membrane potential dependent model for uptake and retention of technetium isonitrile complexes.

The attack of water or NaOH solution on YBa2Cu3O7−x powder prior to sintering forms large crystallites in the sintered ceramic product. This enhanced crystallinity yields a higher density and larger critical current. The water or NaOH solution treatment of the YBCO powder leads to the formation of a BaO-CuO flux during the sintering process. Water exposure though destructive to YBCO in general can be used in an advantageous way for preparation of sintered YBCO ceramic material.

In the search for alternative chemotherapeutic strategies against leukemia, various 1-indanone thiosemicarbazones, as well as eight novel platinum(II) and palladium(II) complexes, with the formula [MCl2(HL)] and [M(HL)(L)]Cl, derived from two 1-indanone thiosemicarbazones were synthesized and tested for antiproliferative activity against the human leukemia U937 cell line. The crystal structure of [Pt(HL1)(L1)]Cl.2MeOH, where L1=1-indanone thiosemicarbazone, was solved by X-ray diffraction. Free thiosemicarbazone ligands showed no antiproliferative effect, but the corresponding platinum(II) and palladium( II) complexes inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. Platinum(II) complexes also displayed selective apoptotic activity in U937 cells but not in peripheral blood monocytes or the human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cell line used to screen for potential hepatotoxicity. Present findings show that, in U937 cells, 1-indanone thiosemicarbazones coordinated to palladium(II) were more cytotoxic than those complexed with platinum(II), although the latter were found to be more selective for leukemic cells suggesting that they are promising compounds with potential therapeutic application against hematological malignancies.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Carotenoids are a large group of health-promoting compounds used in many industrial sectors, such as foods, feeds, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and colorants. Considering the global population growth and environmental challenges, it is essential to find new sustainable sources of carotenoids beyond those obtained from agriculture. This review focuses on the potential use of marine archaea, bacteria, algae, and yeast as biological factories of carotenoids. A wide variety of carotenoids, including novel ones, were identified in these organisms. The role of carotenoids in marine organisms and their potential health-promoting actions have also been discussed. Marine organisms have a great capacity to synthesize a wide variety of carotenoids, which can be obtained in a renewable manner without depleting natural resources. Thus, it is concluded that they represent a key sustainable source of carotenoids that could help Europe achieve its Green Deal and Recovery Plan. Additionally, the lack of standards, clinical studies, and toxicity analysis reduces the use of marine organisms as sources of traditional and novel carotenoids. Therefore, further research on the processing of marine organisms, the biosynthetic pathways, extraction procedures, and examination of their content is needed to increase carotenoid productivity, document their safety, and decrease costs for their industrial implementation.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The composition of the essential oil of Uruguayan Citrus clementine Hort., prepared in the laboratory from the fruit of Nules and Comune cultivars, has been studied. The volatile fraction was analysed by HRGC and HRGC–MS (quadrupole); 69 components were identified; the enantiomeric distribution of β-pinene, sabinene, limonene, linalol and α-terpineol was studied by multidimensional HRGC–HRGC. Polymethoxylated flavones present in the non-volatile residue were analysed by normal-phase HPLC. The results were compared with those of Italian clementine oil.

A summary of the resource.
The composition of the volatile fraction of 236 samples of genuine Uruguayan lemon oils obtained by industrial processing during the 1992 and 1993 seasons was studied by GC. The samples were representative of all production areas situated in the North and South of the country. Forty-three components were identified in the oils. The quantitative data regarding all the samples were divided according to the production areas (North and South), production year and month. These data show that except for a slight decrease of limonene and an increase of some other monoterpenes such as sabinene and β-pinene, the oil compositions do not show much variation during the production season, while the oils obtained from fruits growing in the South have a higher content of oxygenated compounds than those growing in the North. This difference is in good agreement with the better olfactive properties of the South oils. The quantitative composition of the Italian oils is more similar to Uruguayan South oils than to the North ones.

BACKGROUND Strawberry breeding programs should be able to rely on valid and simple methodologies for evaluating sensory quality of new cultivars. In this context, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the applicability of a simple sensory methodology, named projective mapping, to evaluate the sensory characteristics of strawberry cultivars and advanced selections throughout the harvest season. Three strawberry cultivars and two advanced selections were evaluated by an untrained assessor panel using projective mapping in three different moments of the harvest season: June (early season), August (mid-season) and September (peak harvest). Instrumental measurements were also performed. RESULTS Projective mapping enabled the identification of the main sensory characteristics of the strawberry cultivars and advanced selections, as well as the similarities and differences among them. Sensory characteristics of the five evaluated strawberry cultivars and advanced selections largely varied throughout the harvest season. Simple instrumental measurements were not able to predict the sensory characteristics of the strawberry cultivars, suggesting the importance of sensory methodologies for the evaluation of new cultivars in breeding programs. CONCLUSIONS Projective mapping consisted of a quick alternative for the evaluation of new cultivars relative to standard commercial cultivars. Its main advantage is that a large number of cultivars can be screened with minimal investment of time and resources. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In a continuing effort to identify new active compounds for combating Chagas disease and other neglected diseases, our research group synthesized and evaluated 23 3-arylquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile di-N-oxides against Trypanosoma cruzi. Five of them presented IC50 values of the same magnitude as the standard drug Nifurtimox, making them valid as new lead compounds. The optimized molecular structures of 23 derivatives represented by 1497 types of DRAGON descriptors were subjected to linear regression analysis, and the derived QSAR was shown to be predictive. In this way, we achieved a rational guide for the proposal of new candidate structures whose activities still remain unknown.
