Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The molecular structure of the title complex, [Cu(C6H14N4O2)2(H2O)]CO3 Æ H2O, was determined by single crystal X-ray diffractometry. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21, with Z = 2. The Cu(II) ion is in a square pyramidal environment, trans coordinated at the basis by two argininate groups acting as bidentate ligands through their amino nitrogen and carboxylate oxygen atoms. The coordination around copper is completed by a water molecule at the pyramid apex. The infrared, Raman and electronic spectra are briefly discussed on the basis of the structural peculiarities of the complex.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Two new Cu(II) complexes of stoichiometry [Cu(L-dipept)], containing as ligands the dipeptides L-alanine-L-valine and L-alanine-L-phenylalanine were prepared. They were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffractometry, and infrared and electronic spectroscopy. Both crystallize in the orthorhombic space group P2i2i2i with Z = 4. The Cu(II) ion has essentially the same elongated pyramidal coordination, being equatorially cis coordinated by a N2O2 arrangement of ligand atoms and axially by a carbonyl oxygen atom. The compounds show rather similar polymeric structures that differ from each other basically in the dihedral angle between adjacent N2O2 planes. The infrared and electronic spectra are briefly discussed on the basis of the structural characteristics of the complexes. Superoxide dismutase-like activity was tested for both compounds

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The azine bridged dicatechol ligand (E,E)-benzaldehyde azine (H4L) was fully characterized by X-ray analysis. The reaction of [ReCl6]2� with this compound was studied and the novel Re(IV) complex (HNEt3)(NBu4)[ ReCl4(H2L)] was prepared and characterized. The structure and spectroscopy of the compound H4L and its Re(IV) complex were studied experimentally and by means of density functional calculations.

Introduction Quillaja brasiliensis (St. A. ‐Hil. & Tul) Mart (Quillajaceae) is a species native to South America, which is rich in saponins. Saponins are used in different industries, so there is a constant demand for this type of compound. Based on the wide range of applications for the saponins found in this species, notably as immunoadjuvants, we conducted a comprehensive study of this tree and its saponins. Objective The purpose of this work is to complete the characterisation of the immunoadjuvant saponin fraction from Q. brasiliensis leaves and further study the saponin fraction obtained from Q. brasiliensis bark. Methodology Saponin fractions were studied using mass spectrometry in combination with classical methods of monosaccharide and methylation analysis. We performed direct infusion and liquid chromatography/electrospray ionisation ion trap multiple‐stage mass spectrometry (DI‐ESI‐IT‐MSn and LC‐ESI‐IT‐MS2). Results Seventy‐five saponins, 21 from leaves and 54 from bark, were tentatively identified according to their molecular mass, fragmentation pattern and chromatographic behaviour. This work represents the first investigation of saponins from the bark of Q. brasiliensis and some of them presented new structural motifs not previously reported in the genus Quillaja. Conclusion The efficiency and selectivity of the data dependent LC‐MS2 method allowed the rapid profiling of saponins from Q. brasiliensis. The results of the monosaccharide and methylation analysis performed in saponins from Q. brasiliensis fractions and Q. saponaria Molina (Quillajaceae) fraction gives further support to the structures proposed according to the mass spectral data, validating the strategy used in the present work.

Herein, we employed first-principle calculations to study the structure and reactivity of dual-doped graphene. The new materials were derived from graphene by replacing two carbon atoms with one 2p element (B, N or O), and one 3p element (Al, Si, P or S). A total of 12 dual-doped graphenes were used to perform a comparative study and identify the most promising materials for the development of new catalysts and anchoring nanoparticles. The structural analysis indicated that in all cases, except SiB, the dopants prefer to replace a CC bond. Yet, not always the dopants are bonded, presenting an edge-like bonding. As regards chemical reactivity, in general the introduction of two atoms remarkably increases reactivity as compared to graphene. The most prominent examples are Al–O, S–N, P–O and Si–B(para) codoped graphene which present reactivity higher than perfect and monodoped graphenes. This effect was attributed to the strong charge redistribution induced by the dopants. In most cases the heteroatoms are the most reactive sites, but in others the carbon atoms are more reactive, as in Al–O and Si–B codoped graphene. The combination of 2p and 3p dopants offers the possibility of adjusting over a wide range the reactivity of graphene.<br /><br />

Monitoring of veterinary drug residues in foods is often conducted using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Results have high economic stakes for producers, but the ions monitored are usually selected due to signal intensities without structural interpretation. In this study, the ion transitions were characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry.
The 62 veterinary drugs from the LC/MS/MS method consisted of sulfonamides, β-lactams, phenicols, macrolides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and corticosteroids. They were individually infused into a quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) mass spectrometer using electrospray ionization (ESI) operated in positive mode. The MS and collision-induced dissociation (CID) MS/MS spectra for each analyte were obtained for structural elucidation. The Q-TOF instrument was calibrated to obtain a mass accuracy error <5 ppm for the MS and MS/MS spectra.
The use of high-resolution ESI-Q-TOF-MS for the generation of the MS/MS product ions allowed for the determination of chemical formulae for the analytes, some of which led to new findings. Assigned structures were based on rational interpretation of the most stable possible products with comparison with the scientific literature. In difficult cases, isotopically labeled drugs or hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) exchange experiments were used to help confirm the structures of the product ions.
The use of ESI-Q-TOF-MS in this study has allowed structure elucidation of 186 MS/MS product ions previously selected for the LC/MS/MS analysis of 62 veterinary drugs. This serves to reduce the chances of false positives and negatives in the monitoring program, and provides justification and defense in regulatory enforcement actions.

Infection by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus in the intermediate host results in the development of a hydatid cyst which contains the protoscoleces within a fluid-filled cavity enclosed by the bilayered cyst membrane. N-glycans were enzymatically released from crude extracts of homogenates of hydatid cyst membranes and protoscoleces and their structures were defined by high sensitivity fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry in conjunction with sequential exoglycosidase digestions.The major N-glycans from the cyst membrane were found to be non-charged structures having complex-type antennae and core fucosylation. The antennae are either truncated at the first N-acetylglucosamine or are extended with β-galactose to form N-acetyllactosamine (lacNAc). A significant proportion of the lacNAc backbones are capped by α-galactose. The resulting Galα-Galβ-terminal structures may account for the earlier observation that antibodies against the blood group P1 epitope recognise components of hydatid cyst extracts. The complex-type N-glycans identified in the protoscoleces extracts were the same as the neutral structures found in the cyst membrane but a small proportion of high mannose structures and truncated di- and trimannosyl core structures were also identified. Sialylated N-glycans were identified as minor constituents of the cyst membrane preparation but were not observed in protoscoleces extracts. Whether the sialylated glycans are host derived or endogenously synthesized by the parasite remains to be established. This is the first reported structural analysis of N-glycans from cestodes and provides new insights into protein glycosylation in helminths.

The crystal structure of sub-15 nm AMoO4 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) scheelite nanocrystals has been investigated using a dual-space approach that combines Rietveld and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction data. Rietveld analysis yields an average crystal structure in which the Mo–O bond distance exhibits an anomalously large contraction (2.8%) upon chemical substitution of Ba2+ for Ca2+. Such a dependence on chemical composition contradicts the well-known rigid character of MoVI–O bonds and the resulting rigidity of MoO4 tetrahedra in scheelites. Unlike Rietveld, PDF analysis yields a local crystal structure in which the Mo–O bond distance shows a negligible contraction (0.4%) upon going from Ba2+ to Ca2+ and, therefore, appears independent of the chemical composition. Analysis of the anisotropic displacement parameters of the oxygen atom reveals that the disagreement between the average and local structural models arises from the presence of static orientational disorder of the MoO4 tetrahedra. Rietveld analysis averages the random rotations of the MoO4 tetrahedra across the scheelite lattice yielding an apparent Mo–O bond distance that is shorter than the true bond distance. In contrast, PDF analysis demonstrates that the structural integrity of the MoO4 tetrahedra remains unchanged upon chemical substitution of the alkaline-earth cation, and that their orientational disorder is accommodated through geometric distortions of the AO8 dodecahedra.

<p>Galectins, soluble lectins widely expressed intra- and extracellularly in different cell types, play major roles in<br />deciphering the cellular glycocode. Galectin-1 (Gal-1), a prototype member of this family, presents a carbohydrate<br />recognition domain (CRD) with specific affinity for β-galactosides such as N-acetyllactosamine (β-D-Galp-(1<br />→ 4)-D-GlcpNAc), and mediate numerous physiological and pathological processes.<br />In this work, Gal-1 binding affinity for β-(1 → 6) galactosides, including β-D-Galp-(1 → 6)-β-D-GlcpNAc-(1 → 4)-<br />D-GlcpNAc was evaluated, and their performance was compared to that of β-(1 → 4) and β-(1 → 3) galactosides.<br />To this end, the trisaccharide β-D-Galp-(1 → 6)-β-D-GlcpNAc-(1 → 4)-D-GlcpNAc was enzymatically synthesized, purified and structurally characterized.<br />To evaluate the affinity of Gal-1 for the galactosides, competitive solid phase assays (SPA) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) studies were carried out. The experimental dissociation constants and binding energies obtained were compared to those calculated by molecular docking. These analyses evidenced the critical role of the glycosidic linkage between the terminal galactopyranoside residue and the adjacent monosaccharide, as galactosides bearing β-(1 → 6) glycosidic linkages showed dissociation constants six- and seven-fold higher than those involving β-(1 → 4) and β-(1 → 3) linkages, respectively. Moreover, docking experiments revealed the presence of hydrogen bond interactions between the N-acetyl group of the glucosaminopyranose moiety of the evaluated galactosides and specific amino acid residues of Gal 1, relevant for galectin-glycan affinity. Noticeably, the binding free energies (ΔGcbainlcd) derived from the molecular docking were in good agreement with experimental values determined by ITC measurements (ΔGebxinpd), evidencing a good correlation between theoretical and experimental approaches, which validates the in silico simulations and constitutes an important tool for the rational design of future optimized ligands.</p>

<strong>Structural insights into human microsomal epoxide hydrolase by combined homology modeling, molecular dynamics simulations and molecular docking calculations</strong>
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
A new homology model of human microsomal epoxide hydrolase was derived based on multiple templates. The model obtained was fully evaluated, including MD simulations and ensemble-based docking, showing that the quality of the structure is better than that of only previously known model. Particularly, a catalytic triad was clearly identified, in agreement with the experimental information available. Analysis of intermediates in the enzymatic mechanism led to the identification of key residues for substrate binding, stereoselectivity, and intermediate stabilization during the reaction. In particular, we have confirmed the role of the oxyanion hole and the conserved motif (HGXP) in epoxide hydrolases, in excellent agreement with known experimental and computational data on similar systems. The model obtained is the first one that fully agrees with all the experimental observations on the system.

We have identified phenazine 5,10-dioxides as prodrugs for antitumour therapy that undergo hypoxicselective bioreduction to form cytotoxic species. Here, we investigated some structural modifications in order to find new selective hypoxic cytotoxins and to establish the structural requirements for adequate activity. Three different chemical-series were prepared and the clonogenic survival of V79 cells on aerobic and anaerobic conditions was determined. Electrochemical- and DNA-interaction studies were done for the most relevant derivatives. The new fluoro-derivative 7-fluoro-2-aminophenazine 5,10- dioxide displayed selective toxicity towards hypoxic V79 cells having adequate hypoxic cytotoxicity ratio (HCR ¼ 6.8) and being the most potent hypoxic cytotoxins (P¼ 2.5 mM) described for this family of bioreductive agents. The reduction potential of the N-oxide moiety in this new fluoro-derivative was in the range for adequate bioreduction property. According to the fluorescence studies, the DNA-interaction mechanism was especially operative in the phenazine drugs more than in the corresponding prodrugs, phenazine dioxides.

A summary of the resource.
The crystal structure and the vibrational spectrum of a potential drug for Chagas‘s disease treatment, the (E)-isomer of phenylethenylbenzofuroxan 1 (5(6)(E)- [(2-phenylethenyl)]benzo[1,2-c]1,2,5-oxadiazole N-oxide), are reported. In order to provide insights into structural relationships, quantum mechanical calculations were employed starting from crystal structure. These results have given theoretical support to state interesting structural features, such as the effect of some intermolecular contacts on the molecule conformation and the electronic delocalization decreasing through atoms of the benzofuroxan moiety. Furthermore, the MOGUL comparative analysis in the Cambridge Structural Database provided additional evidences on these structural behaviors of compound 1. Intermolecular contacts interfere on the intramolecular geometry, as, for instance, on the phenyl group orientation, which is twisted by 12.32(6)◦ from the ethenylbenzofuroxan plane. The experimental Raman spectrum of compound 1 presents unexpected frequency shift and also anomalous Raman activities. At last, the molecule skeleton deformation and the characteristic vibrational modes were correlated by matching the experimental Raman spectrum to the calculated one.

A summary of the resource.
The structure of a polysaccharide from Vibrio parahaemolyticus strain AN-16000 has been investigated. The sugar and absolute configuration analysis revealed d-Glc, d-GalN, d-QuiN and l-FucN as major components. The PS was subjected to dephosphorylation with aqueous 40% HF to obtain an oligosaccharide that was analyzed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The HR-MS spectrum of the oligosaccharide revealed a pentasaccharide composed of two Glc residues, one QuiNAc and one GalNAc, one FucNAc, as well as a glycerol moiety. The structure of the PS was determined using 1H, 13C, 15N and 31P NMR spectroscopy; inter-residue correlations were identified by 1H,13C-heteronuclear multiple-bond correlation, 1H,1H-NOESY and 1H,31P-hetero-TOCSY experiments. The PS backbone has the following teichoic acid-like structure: →3)-d-Gro-(1-P-6)-β-d-Glcp-(1→4)-α-l-FucpNAc-(1→3)-β-d-QuipNAc-(1→ with a side-chain consisting of α-d-Glcp-(1→6)-α-d-GalpNAc-(1→ linked to the O3 position of the FucNAc residue.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The structure of the extracellular polysaccharide from Azotobacter vinelandii strain 1484 has been investigated, specific degradations and n.m.r. spectroscopy being the main methods used. It is concluded that the polysaccharide is composed of tetrasaccharide repeating-units having the following structure, in which Sug is 3-deoxy-d-threo-hexulosonic acid. The polysaccharide also contains a non-stoichiometric amount of O-acetyl groups, distributed over at least two positions.

The presence of layers of corner-sharing square CuO4 units is a common structural feature of the superconducting copper oxide ceramics. There are three closely related structure types with stoichiometry (RE)2CuO4, each containing isolated sheets of fourfold (T' structure), fivefold (T* structure) or sixfold (T structure) Cu-O coordination. For the longest rare earth cation (La), (RE)2CuO4 crystallizes in a slightly distorted K2NiF4 T structure. Change of the lanthanide ion from La3+ to Pr3+ or Nd3+ leads to the closely related structure called T' structure (8). This is due to the intermediate size of the rare earth ion in the range (Pr-Gd). The relative simplicity of these rare earth systems allows us to examine how structure is related to ionic size effects and cation ordering. The study of the solid solubility of La2CuO4 (T) and Nd2CuO4 (T') provides a measure of the relative stabilities of these structural types. This work reports the crystal structure of the La2-x-yNdySrxCuO4 (x=0.1, y=0.1, 0.3), determined by neutron powder diffraction (T=10 K, RT), with data obtained at Studsvik Neutron Research Laboratory (Sweden). These specimens crystallize in the Cmca space group, showing the T structure and thus the solubility of Nd in this network. Structural study in the (La,Nd)2-xSrxCuO4 system -

We report the structural, thermal and magnetic properties of superconducting PrBa�Cu�O��� (Pr-123). The existence of superconductivity in samples of Pr-123 is still a polemic subject. To further study this problem, we have measured thin "lms and high-quality polycrystalline bulk samples by following a sol}gel method, associated with heat treatment in argon atmosphere. The present results con"rm the occurrence of superconductivity in Pr-123 polycrystalline and thin "lm samples.

A summary of the resource.
The structural transition in the La2−xNdxCuO4system is studied through thex=0.45, 0.5 compositions, using neutron powder diffraction. Both compositions could be refined as biphasic systems represented by theI4/mmmand theAbmaspace groups. The presence of T and T′ phases could be observed in both compositions. The apical oxygen atom in the copper coordination octahedron can be regarded as the key for structural distortion causing the transition from T to T′ structures.
