A summary of the resource.
Tambo Colorado is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Southern Peruvian coast, because of its stunning architecture, its extraordinary pictorial decoration, and its strategic location in the section of the Great Inca Road. The Research Project Tambo Colorado considers necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis encompassing nature of the materials (archaeometric analysis) as well as a proper understanding of their conservation status of its architecture. In this regard interdisciplinary research provides the necessary tools to achieve these goals. For this reason our team is integrated by archaeometrists, engineers, conservators and archaeologists. Due to of this transdisciplinary approach, one of the main objective is the study of painting technology developed by the craftsmen of the site. The first results obtained, thanks to an analytical strategy combining observation and elemental and structural analysis (colorimetry, SEM-EDS, XRF, XRD and SXRD), allow us to identify the coloring materials used. These data enabled to reconstruct the operational chain followed to elaborate the murals (since the pigments extraction to the making of the murals) but also to consider and develop a suitable surfaces conservation plan. <p>A new synthetic route for the quorum sensing signal Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) is described and used for the preparation of [4-13C]-AI-2 starting from [1-13C]-bromoacetic acid. The key step in this process was the enantioselective reduction of an intermediate ketone. This synthesis provides, selectively, both enantiomers of the labelled or unlabelled parent compound, (R) or (S)-4,5-dihydroxypentane-2,3-dione (DPD) and was used for an improved synthesis of [1-13C]-AI-2.</p>

A summary of the resource.
The species of genus Baccharis spp. (Compositae) are an important natural resource in the search for new bioactive compounds. This article presents an investigation of volatile compounds of two species of Baccharis that are native to southern Brazil (Baccharis dentata (Vell.) G.M. Barroso and Baccharis uncinella DC) collected in summer and autumn of 2011. The essential oils were extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), olfactometry analysis (GC-O) and qualitative assessment of the antimicrobial potential using the indirect bioautography method against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica subspecie enterica serovar Choleraesuis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Candida parapsilosis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Rhizopus stolonifer, Fusarium solani and Aspergillus oryzae. The results demonstrated that the harvest period has an influence on the composition of the essential oils, but little influence on extraction yield. It can also be observed that the joint analysis of GC-MS and GC-O resulted in complementary information about the essential oils studied because the intensities of volatile compounds detected by both methods are significantly different. Regarding antimicrobial assays, it was found that the essential oil of B. dentata was effective against S. aureus, A. niger, C. parapsilosis and R. stolonifer, whereas the essential oil of B. uncinella was effective against S. aureus, S. Choleraesuis, C. albicans, A. niger, C. parapsilosis, R. stolonifer and F. solani.

A summary of the resource.
<p>Cyanobacterial toxic blooms are aworldwide problem. The Río de la Plata (RdlP) basinmakes up about one fourth of South America areal surface, second only to the Amazonian. Intensive agro-industrial land use and the construction of dams have led to generalized eutrophication ofmain tributaries and increased the intensity and duration of cyanobacteria blooms. Herewe analyse the evolution of an exceptional bloomat the lowRdlP basin and Atlantic coast during the summer of 2019. A large array of biological, genetic,meteorological, oceanographic and<br />satellite data is combined to discuss the driving mechanisms. The bloomcovered thewhole stripe of the RdlP estuary and the Uruguayan Atlantic coasts (around 500 km) for approximately 4 months. It was caused by the Microcystis aeruginosa complex (MAC), which produces hepatotoxins (microcystin). Extreme precipitation in the upstreamregions of Uruguay and Negro rivers' basins caused highwater flows and discharges. The evolution of meteorological and oceanographic conditions as well as the similarity of organisms' traits in the affected area<br />suggest that the bloom originated in eutrophic reservoirs at the lower RdlP basin, Salto Grande in the Uruguay river, and Negro river reservoirs. High temperatures and weak Eastern winds prompted the rapid dispersion of the bloom over the freshwater plume along the RdlP northern and Atlantic coasts. The long-distance rapid drift allowed active MAC organisms to inoculate freshwater bodies from the Atlantic basin, impacting environments relevant for biodiversity conservation. Climate projections for the RdlP basin suggest an increase in precipitation and river water flux, which, in conjunction with agriculture intensification and dams' construction, might turn this extraordinary event into an ordinary situation.</p>

A summary of the resource.
New bond valence R0 parameters were derived for alkali– and alkaline-earth–oxygen pairs encountered in metal−organic compounds. A total of 7693 metal−oxygen bond lengths were extracted from structures deposited in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and containing at least one carboxylate ligand bound to the metal. One hundred structures were individually analyzed for each metal. R0 values were computed using two different approaches: geometric mean and graphical fitting. In both cases, the bond valence parameter b was fixed at 0.37 Å. R0 values obtained using a geometric mean approach were 1.744 (Na–O), 2.094 (K–O), 2.228 (Rb–O), 2.412 (Cs–O), 1.661 (Mg–O), 1.933 (Ca–O), 2.090 (Sr–O), and 2.265 Å (Ba–O). These parameters yielded more accurate metal bond valence sums (BVS) and lower root-mean square deviations (RMSD) than those computed using R0 values currently available in the literature,1 which had been derived from the structures of inorganic oxides. The most significant improvement was observed for sodium (this work mean BVS = 1.01 v.u., RMSD = 0.116 v.u.; literature mean BVS = 1.18 v.u., RMSD = 0.226 v.u.; v.u.: valence units) and magnesium (this work mean BVS = 2.00 v.u., RMSD = 0.038 v.u.; literature mean BVS = 2.18 v.u., RMSD = 0.100 v.u.). More accurate bond valence sums and lower variances were also observed when the new set of R0 values was applied to metal–organic compounds featuring oxygenated ligands such as ethers, ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, and esthers. These parameters should be applicable to the structural and crystal-chemical analysis of metal−organic compounds ranging from coordination complexes to organic−inorganic extended hybrids.

<p>Se ha reportado la inmovilización de ureasa por métodos que involucran la formación de enlaces covalentes, como son los métodos por intercambio tiol-disulfuro [2] y por reacción con agarosa-CNBr [1], que involucra grupos SH y NH2 de la enzima respectivamente.</p>
<p>En nuestro laboratorio se logró inmovilizar ureasa por dos metodologías diferentes que involucran otras propiedades de la enzima.</p>
<p>Se logró inmovilizar ureasa por cromatografía de interacción hidrofóbica sobre octil agarosa y se constató conservación de la actividad enzimática.</p>
<p>También se logró inmivilizar ureasa inmovilizada por intercambio tiol-disulfuro y por reacción con agarosaCNBr.</p>
<p>Se realizó el estudio comparativo de la estabilidad a la temperatura de la enzima en solución y los cuatro derivados insolubles obtenidas en nuestro laboratorio,</p>
<p>También se estudió el efecto de dodecilsulfato de sodio.</p>

A summary of the resource.
Quillaja brasiliensis (Quillajaceae) is a saponin producing species native from southern Brazil and Uruguay. Its saponins are remarkably similar to those of Q. saponaria, which provides most of the saponins used as immunoadjuvants in vaccines. The immunostimulating capacities of aqueous extract (AE) and purified saponin fraction (QB-90) obtained from leaves of Q. brasiliensis were favorably comparable to those of a commercial saponin-based adjuvant preparation (Quil-A®) in experimental vaccines against bovine herpesvirus type 1 and 5, poliovirus and bovine viral diarrhea virus in mice model. Herein, the immunogenicity and protection efficacy of rabies vaccines adjuvanted with Q. brasiliensis AE and its saponin fractions were compared with vaccines adjuvanted with either commercial Quil-A or Alum. Mice were vaccinated with one or two doses (on days 0 and 14) of one of the different vaccines and serum levels of total IgG, IgG1 and IgG2a were quantified over time. A challenge experiment with a lethal dose of rabies virus was carried out with the formulations. Viral RNA detection in the brain of mice was performed by qPCR, and RNA copy-numbers were quantified using a standard curve of in vitro transcribed RNA. All Q. brasiliensis saponin-adjuvanted vaccines significantly enhanced levels of specific IgG isotypes when compared with the no adjuvant group (P ≤ 0.05). Overall, one or two doses of saponin-based vaccine were efficient to protect against the lethal rabies exposure. Both AE and saponin fractions from Q. brasiliensis leaves proved potent immunological adjuvants in vaccines against a lethal challenge with a major livestock pathogen, hence confirming their value as competitiv

<p>Clay honeycomb monoliths (MC) washcoated by pillared clay (PILC) obtained from the same starting material were used as support of manganese catalysts for the complete oxidation of acetone. Using the same clay for extrusion and pillaring processes intended to optimize the catalyst preparation respect to previous similar studies through raw materials saving, with subsequent local clay valorization, and washcoat adherence enhancement due to higher chemical affinity with the monolith substrate. To evaluate the influence of the PILC presence on the<br />catalytic behaviour, two other non-coated monolith catalysts were prepared as references, having different loads of manganese as function of the impregnation cycles number applied, either one (Mn/MC) or two (Mn2/MC). All the catalysts were characterized by TGA, XRD, XRF, N2 physisorption and SEM. The catalytic tests used acetone as a VOC model molecule. The results indicated that the PILC coating (Mn/PILC/MC) led to a higher percentage of Mn2O3 (7 wt%) compared to Mn/MC (1 wt%). Moreover, the PILC-washcoated sample exhibited better performance in the acetone oxidation than Mn2/MC regardless this sample had higher Mn2O3 loading (11 wt%). This effect was related to the active phase crystal characteristics as well as to the textural properties induced by<br />the PILC washcoating.</p>

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The present study investigated the effects of thinking style, health-related consumption purpose and their interaction on food choice, using yogurt packages (plain and strawberry). For each yogurt, four 2-level label variables were used in a discrete choice experiment: image (simple vs. complex), taste description (present vs. absent), probiotics claim (detailed vs. shallow) and nutritional information (healthful vs. regular). The choice experiment was completed by 148 female study participants while their eye movements were recorded using a remote eye-tracker. The expanded Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) was used to evaluate their thinking style. The participants’ self-reports on the purpose of their yogurt consumption were used to evaluate whether or not the purpose of product consumption was associated with health, per participant. Results from the choice task showed that both CRT and health-related consumption purpose influenced the effect of image and nutritional information variables. For the participants’ visual attention, the CRT significantly influenced all four label variables, while health-related consumption purpose only significantly influenced the image variable. Visual attention towards image decreased when the purpose of product consumption was associated with health. In addition, the attention towards and the importance attached to nutritional information increased with increasing CRT scores, but these effects were diminished when the participants’ purpose of product consumption was related to health. These results show that the influence of thinking style on food choice may be moderated by the consumers’ health-related consumption purpose.

The development of strategies to reduce sugar intake of children and adolescents has been deemed necessary to cope with the global obesity epidemic. In this context, the aims of the present work were to study attitudes towards sugar reduction in three dairy products of children and adolescents of two income levels and to assess if these attitudes were modulated by the inclusion of the traffic light system on labels. A total of 646 children and adolescents from three primary/secondary schools in Montevideo (Uruguay) participated in the study. A total of twelve labels were designed following a full factorial design with three variables: dairy product (3 levels: yogurt, chocolate-flavoured milk and vanilla milk dessert), sugar reduction claim (2 levels: absent and present "20% less sugar") and traffic light system (2 levels: absent and present). Children had to evaluate their expected liking of the labels and to answer a check-all-that-apply question composed of terms related to tastiness, healthfulness and fun. Sugar claim significantly increased children and adolescents' expected liking scores (p=0.01), suggesting they had a positive attitude towards sugar reduction in the evaluated dairy products. However, the influence of sugar reduction claim on hedonic expectations and healthfulness perception was modulated by the inclusion of the traffic-light system on labels (p=0.01). This front-of-pack nutrition labelling scheme increased their unhealthfulness perception of products with high sugar content and could potentially discourage their consumption. Age and income modulated the influence of these strategies on hedonic and healthfulness perception (p<0.05).

Input of plant material may strongly change decomposition rates of soil organic matter (SOM), i.e. causing priming effect (PE), but the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. We found that rice straw addition in anoxic Fuyang (F) rice field soil stimulated CH4 production from SOM at the expense of CO2, whereas in Uruguay (U) soil it suppressed SOM degradation to CO2 plus CH4 (negative PE). Reciprocal inoculation experiments with non-sterile and sterile soils showed that the soils always displayed the effect of rice straw characteristic for the live microbial community rather than for the soil physicochemical properties. Pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA genes showed that bacterial communities in these soil samples were separated into two clusters (F and U). Symbiobacterium was abundant or dominant in microbiota from U soil, but negligible in those from F soil. Network analysis indicated that the bacterial populations involved in SOM decomposition were different between soils of F and U clusters; moreover, they were more tightly connected to methanogens in U than in F clusters. Ultimately, our results suggested that the PE of rice straw is mediated by the composition and activity of soil microbial community.

A dynamic development of methodologies of analytical flow injection measurements during four decades since their invention has reinforced the solid position of flow analysis in the arsenal of techniques and instrumentation of contemporary chemical analysis. With the number of published scientific papers exceeding 20 000, and advanced instrumentation available for environmental, food, and pharmaceutical analysis, flow analysis is well established as an extremely vital field of modern flow chemistry, which is developed simultaneously with methods of chemical synthesis carried out under flow conditions. This review work is based on almost 300 original papers published mostly in the last decade, with special emphasis put on presenting novel achievements from the most recent 2–3 years in order to indicate current development trends of this methodology. Besides the evolution of the design of whole measuring systems, and including especially new applications of various detections methods, several aspects of implications of progress in nanotechnology, and miniaturization of measuring systems for application in different field of modern chemical analysis are also discussed.

In this work we present studies on applicability of transition metal additives as sintering and electrical conductivity aids for cerium gadolinium oxide electrolyte. The nanosized Ce0.85Gd0.15O1.925 powder obtained by coprecipitation method was modified with Cr3+, Fe3+, Ni2+ or Cu2+ ions. Using high-intensity high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction data we have determined that Cr, Fe and Ni ions do not incorporate into the cerium gadolinium oxide surface or bulk when sintered at 1300 ◦C, but react with Gd ions to form Cr0.9Gd0.1O, GdFeO3 and GdNiO3 phases, while Cu incorporates in the material up to 0.7 mol% with a significant fraction of remaining material showing poorly crystalline CuO phase. The nanosized Ce0.85Gd0.15O1.925 material shows already improved sintering properties than previous reports but full sintering is not achieved below 1300 ◦C, however Cr, Fe and mainly Cu impregnation allows full sintering at 1300 ◦C. 0.5 mol% Ni impregnated material sintered at 1500 ◦C shows enhanced grain boundary conductivity that probably indicates that Ni incorporates into Ce0.84Gd0.15O1.925 above 1300 ◦C. The global results indicate, however, that optimization of ceria microstructure is at least of equal importance for sinterability and grain boundary conductivity than impregnation of the material with transition metal ions.

El presente trabajo tiene como principal objetivo la obtención y caracterización de un biocatalizador en fase sólida de aplicación en la hidrólisis de la lactosa de un efluente de la industria lechera. Con este propósito se optimizó la inmovilización de una preparación comercial de b-galactosidasa de A.oryzae(Biolactase)por adsorción iónica en DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B. Cuando se incubó una solución de enzima con esta resina bajo las condiciones óptimas encontradas se alcanzó un rendimiento de inmovilización del 99. La actividad expresada por el derivado así obtenido fue del 40-66 y los valores de Km y Vmáx aparentes del mismo para el sustrato artificial ONPG fueron de 19.7 mM y 70 mmol/min Mg. El biocatalizador mantuvo el 100 de su actividad inicial durante dos meses de almacenamiento a 4oC y su actividad se redujo al 50 al cabo de 34 días a 25oC se alcanzaron grados de conversión del orden de 80 manteniéndose el total de la actividad al cabo del proceso. Se concluye que tanto la relación lineal encontrada entre carga enzimática aplicada y actividad expresada como la alta capacidad de la resina permiten la obtención de derivados activos y estables de utilidad en procesos de lactolisis.

In contrast with the parent class of flavonoids, the distribution of the isoflavonoid class in the plant kingdom is relatively limited, probably owing to the sporadic occurrence of isoflavone synthase. Isoflavonoids have been mostly found in the subfamily Fabaceae/Papilionoideae of the Leguminosae family. Isoprenoid-substituted (also called complex) isoflavonoids are expressed from a smaller number of plants, as a result of the similarly restricted distribution of prenyltransferases (PT-ase). After the reviews of Tanara & Ibrahim (1995), Boland & Donnelly (1997), the Handbook of Flavonoids by Harborne & C (Handbook of Flavonoids, 1999), and the paper by Harborne and Williams (2000) few other reports concern the distribution and the biological activity of complex isoflavonoids, except a list of isoflavonoids produced from non leguminous plants. This review deals with an update of the literature on isoprenylated isoflavonoids in the years 1995-2006 and is focused on the following highlights. 1. Natural sources of complex isoflavonoids (2000-2006) 2. Chemical structure variety: new entries (2000-2006) 3. Biological activities and a possible structure-activity relationship (1995-2006) 4. In vitro production and microbial metabolism (1995-2006)

Single-dose azithromycin therapy has recently been used in Uruguay for the treatment of uncomplicated gonococcal infections. As part of an active surveillance study to monitor the emergence of antibiotic resistance in gonococcal isolates, we examined the levels of azithromycin susceptibility in 51 consecutive isolates obtained from males with uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis. Isolates with decreased susceptibility to azithromycin (MICs, 0.25 to 0.5 μg/ml) were common, and these isolates often displayed cross-resistance to hydrophobic antimicrobial agents (erythromycin and Triton X-100). Resistance to erythromycin and Triton X-100 is frequently due to overexpression of the mtrCDE-encoded efflux pump mediated by mutations in themtrR gene, which encodes a transcriptional repressor that modulates expression of the mtrCDE operon. Accordingly, we questioned whether clinical isolates that express decreased azithromycin susceptibility harbor mtrR mutations. Promoter mutations that would decrease the level of expression ofmtrR as well as a missense mutation at codon 45 in themtrR-coding region that would result in a radical amino acid replacement within the DNA-binding motif of MtrR were found in these strains. When these mutations were transferred into azithromycin-susceptible strain FA19 by transformation, the susceptibility of gonococci to azithromycin was decreased by nearly 10-fold. The mtrCDE-encoded efflux pump system was responsible for this property since insertional inactivation of themtrC gene resulted in enhanced susceptibility of gonococci to azithromycin. We conclude that the mtrCDE-encoded efflux pump can recognize azithromycin and that the emergence of gonococcal strains with decreased susceptibility to azithromycin can, in part, be explained by mtrR mutations.

During a screen of Neisseria gonorrhoeae clinical isolates obtained in Uruguay for susceptibility to azithromycin, we noticed that approximately 10% of the strains examined displayed decreased susceptibility to azithromycin and erythromycin due to the mtr(CDE)-encoded efflux pump system, but remained susceptible to Triton X-100. We now report that the mtr(R) promoter region of one of these isolates contains a dinucleotide insertion (TT) that mediates this resistance phenotype.

A summary of the resource.
Continuing with a program to develop new quinone derivatives as biologically active compounds, we designed and synthesized a new series of aryloxy‐quinones, which were evaluated in vitro against Trypanosoma cruzi in epimastigote form. Chemical modifications in three specific moieties on the aryloxy‐quinone core were considered for developing new anti‐T. cruzi agents.

A pesar de la excepcional arquitectura y policromía del sitio arqueológico de Tambo Colorado, no ha habido trabajos de conservación ni en las estructuras arquitectónicas de tierra cruda, ni en las superficies. Estos trabajos requieren una comprensión adecuada del estado de conservación de la arquitectura del sitio y el análisis de los materiales utilizados. Con este propósito, los resultados del presente estudio pretenden explicar la naturaleza de los materiales (pigmentos) utilizados en las pinturas murales, así como determinar las fuentes de estos materiales (canteras). Para ello, pigmentos de cantera fueron investigados por la técnica de difracción de rayos X, usando radiación sincrotrón, y refinamiento estructural por el método de Rietveld. Se determinó la composición de los pigmentos, identificando las fases de anortita, hematita, cuarzo, clorita, halita, yeso, ortoclasa, illita, jarosita, calcita, caolinita, zinwaldita, cristobalita, anhidrita y albita. El refinamiento Rietveld confirmó la presencia de estas fases y determinó el porcentaje en peso de cada una de ellas.
