The present study is concerned with the characterization of archaeological materials of beads and ceramics, from the archaeological sites "Iglesia Colonial" and "Pampa La Cruz" of Huanchaco, respectively. The beads of "Iglesia Colonial" were recorded in funerary contexts of the Chimu Inca Period (1450-1532 A.D.) and Early Colonial Period (1532-1650 A.D.). The importance of studying this site lies in understanding the evolution of human occupation between the Inca transition and the arrival of the Spaniards to the north coast of Peru. In the &ldquo;Pampa La Cruz&rdquo; site, tombs containing beads and ceramic vessels prepared with the decorative technique of &ldquo;the negative" were discovered. In this work fragments of the ceramics of this site were investigated, its mineralogical composition was determined qualitatively and quantitatively. This information would help to identify the possible source of clays used for the preparation of the vessels, which, in turn, could help determine if the vessels came from various places, or if the site's inhabitants themselves processed them. El presente estudio est&aacute; referido a la caracterizaci&oacute;n de materiales arqueol&oacute;gicos de cuentas y cer&aacute;micas, provenientes de los sitios arqueol&oacute;gicos &ldquo;Iglesia Colonial&rdquo; y &ldquo;Pampa La Cruz&rdquo; de Huanchaco, respectivamente. Vitamin A and its esters are commonly found in topical applications because of their advantageous properties, however, have the drawback that are highly sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. The aim of this work was to develop and characterize a novel formulation of solid lipid nanoparticles suitable for topical applications in order to protect vitamin A from degradation. Vitamin A-loaded nanoparticles were successfully prepared by hot homogenization employing Gelucire 44/14&reg; and cetyl alcohol as carrier materials, showing an entrapment efficiency of more than 90%. Particle size, measured by dynamic light scattering, was ca. 40 nm, while transmission electron microscopy images showed that dried nanoparticles were spherical with an average size of about 30-50 nm. Small angle X-ray scattering was used to study their aspect ratio and their physicochemical properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction, additionally, stability of vitamin A was studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Nanoencapsulation may improve antimicrobial activity of nisin when applied on food systems such as lean beef. Nisin-loaded nanoparticles were prepared by alginate ionic gelation and further complexation with chitosan. A 3-factor, 3-level Box-Behnken experimental design and response surface methodology were used to optimize the formulation. Nanoparticles had an encapsulation efficiency of 36.1 &plusmn; 0.6%, a z-average of 66.4 &plusmn; 8.9 nm and a zeta potential of &minus;31.7 &plusmn; 2.6 mV. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy observations confirmed particle size found by dynamic light scattering. Also, Raman spectroscopy analyses and zeta potential measurements showed ionic interactions between nisin and alginate. In vitro assessment of inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes growth at 4 &deg;C indicated sustained antimicrobial activity of nisin-loaded nanoparticles for 21 days. Furthermore, encapsulated nisin was able to inhibit L. monocytogenes growth in vacuum-sealed, refrigerated beef samples for 10 days when applied at 400 IU/g and for 24 days when applied at 800 IU/g, while free nisin controlled microbial growth for only 4 and 17 days respectively. In sum, we describe the application of experimental design tools to produce nisin-loaded nanoparticles that may be used in the food industry to control microbial growth and hence extend the shelf-life of lean beef. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of the addition of carboxymethyl chitosan on the structural properties and antilisterial activity of nisin-incorporated chitosan films. Chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan solutions were prepared with different mass ratios and bacteriocin nisin was added (0, 1000 and 6000 IU/ml). Filmogenic solutions were cast, dried and their physico-chemical and antimicrobial properties were investigated. For the same chitosan/carboxymethyl chitosan mass ratio, the addition of NIS at 6000 IU/ml led to changes in the macro- and microstructure, as well as in physico-chemical properties of films. On the other hand, carboxymethyl chitosan had a plasticizing effect and enhanced the distribution of the bacteriocin within the biopolymer matrix. Moreover, nisin-incorporated blend films of chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan were more effective against Listeria monocytogenes than their pure chitosan counterparts. This study showed that different formulations of nisin-incorporated composite films of chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan may provide options for developing bioactive packaging to improve food safety. The progress in the preparation of new electrode surfaces by electrochemical treatments exhibiting high faradaic efficiencies towards industrial electrocatalytic processes has gained more attention in today&rsquo;s scientific community. Most of the papers report new catalysts dispersed on different substrates, but some fundamental studies required for electrochemical and physical characterizations are sometimes forgotten. In this paper, we make a full staging of two electrochemical treatments that can be conducted to enhance the electrocatalytic activity of platinum surfaces, such as, electrofacetting through square wave potential programs and constant cathodic polarizations in the net hydrogen evolution region. The cathodic treatment applied at &minus;2V clearly develops (111) stepped planes similarly to the electrofacetting performed after applying the square wave program between 1.40V and 0.70 V at 2.5 kHz. The X-ray diffraction patterns of both surfaces as well as on other electrofacetted platinum electrodes are obtained for comparison purposes. Moreover, the electrocatalytic activity towards methanol electrooxidation also exhibits equivalent coulombic efficiencies and 200% higher than on polycrystalline platinum as demonstrated by linear sweep voltammetry and potentiostatic current decays. The electrochemical adsorption characteristics of 3-buten-2-one and 2-butanone on porous platinum electrodes were investigated by differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) in aqueous 0.5 M H2SO4. The study was conducted through the oxidation and reduction of residues formed at different adsorption potentials (Ead). The maximum adsorption for both organic substances was observed at the potential of zero charge of the interface, that is, ca 0.20 V. At this potential an adsorbate species with the C&ndash;O bond lying parallel to the surface is proposed. The sole oxidation product for both molecules was carbon dioxide. Anodic current transients were detected for 3-buten-2-one at adsorption potentials higher than 0.20 V. Between 0.40 and 0.60 V, it is possible to admit a 1&ndash;3e&minus; loss during adsorption with a progressive fragmentation of the original molecule at increasing Ead. After three cycles in the H-adatom region, about 75% of the 3-buten-2-one adsorbate is desorbed; the main products being butane, 1-butene and propane. The ratio of these products depends on Ead, as is expected for the fragmentation of the molecule upon increasing potentials. On the other hand, 2-butanone was adsorbed in the 0.10&ndash;0.60 V potential range without current transients associated with the dissociative reactions of the molecule. The surface coverage diminished drastically at both sides of the maximum adsorption (0.20 V). Butane was the main reduction product of 2-butanone. An improved extended H&uuml;ckel molecular orbital study was conducted to predict the adsorbate configuration of ethylene and acetylene on Au(100) and Au(111) single crystal cluster surfaces at different simulated electric potentials. Three adsorbed configurations on both cluster surfaces were found for ethylene and acetylene, i.e. &pi;, di-&sigma; and &mu;-bridging species, whose relative contributions to the total organic surface coverage depend on the electric potential. Acetylene is chemisorbed on gold in a &pi;-bonded mode when a positively charged surface is simulated, whereas di-&sigma; and &mu;-bridging state are the most likely adsorption modes at negative electric potentials, the binding energies on Au(100) being larger than those of Au(111) clusters. Ethylene, on the other hand, is physisorbed on gold at equilibrium and positive electric potentials, however the chemisorption of the molecule is achieved when a negatively charged surface is simulated. Adsorption of ethylene at potentials below that of zero charge of the gold solution interface was observed. The anodic stripping of adsorbed ethylene at potentials lower than 0.20 V in 1 M H2SO4 (0.25 V in 1 M HClO4) exhibits two residues, in the double layer and in the gold oxide region. On the other hand, the adsorption of acetylene took place in two potential regions, one coinciding with the ethylene adsorption domain, and the other involving potential values positive to that of zero charge. AB2 alloys have been extensively studied as Ni-MH battery anodes. In the hydriding process, hydrogen diffusion inside the crystal lattice is the determining step, so a comparison between gas phase and electrochemical environment was carried out. As concern, we have found structural changes as a consequence of hydriding in terms of segregation of different stable phases and variations in unit cell parameters in each alloy. Maximum hydrogen storage capacity and hydrogen molar volume for studied alloys were evaluated by PCT curves at different temperatures. Resulting values were compared with electrochemical PCT (ECT plots). Results obtained for both methods were similar, with a hydrogen molar volume value close to 30 cm3 mol-1 being higher for AB2M0 in accordance with the reported capacity values. Diffusion time constants were determined from GITT, achieved data were similar to previously reported by EIS and HRD. AB2M1 alloy showed the best kinetic behavior, depicting a time constant value an order of magnitude lower than AB2M0. This fact could be attributed to the diffusion coefficient and/or the hydrogen diffusion length mean path. No significant differences in thermodynamic parameters were observed between both alloys, therefore, the diffusion coefficients should be similar. In this work, we have used low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study the physical and chemical interaction between individual cobalt&ndash;tetraphenylporphyrin molecules and a copper nitride monolayer. We have demonstrated that the Cu3N&ndash;Cu(110) system promotes a selective decoupling of the porphyrin macrocycle from the local environment, allowing visualization of the molecular orbitals and vibronic states of the molecule, while maintaining a strong coupling between the Co-dz2 orbital and the substrate. The reverse behavior was observed for adsorption of the same molecule onto a metallic Cu(110) surface. First-principles calculations confirm both the molecular adsorption site and the electronic decoupling of the molecular states from the substrate. To identify molecular markers of cell differentiation in developing nervous tissue, monoclonal antibodies against chick embryo neural retina were made. One of them, 3C3mAb, recognized a developmentally regulated antigen present in several organs of the CNS. Data from MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and peptide sequencing of the immuno-affinity purified protein indicated identity of the antigen with MARCKS. The immunoreactive material was always found as a unique polypeptide (Mr 71 kDa) in SDS-PAGE, however isoelectrofocusing revealed the existence of several bands (pI ranging from 4.0 to 4.5). Interestingly some retinal cell types, as photoreceptors, exhibited an extremely significant decrease in the intensity of the immunoreactive material during the final phases of terminal differentiation while others, as some retinal neurons, maintained the immunoreactivity when fully differentiated. Taken together these results indicate that MARCKS, a protein susceptible of several posttranslational modifications as myristoylation and phosphorylation at variable extent, may act differently in neural retina cell types. The development of new electrochemical immunosensors for the detection of environmental contaminants is of great interest due to their simplicity, high sensitivity, and extended analytical range. Because of the antibody is immobilized on the electrode, it is important to determine its loss of reactivity after immobilization. In this work, two aspects were addressed. First, we developed a new methodology based on electrochemical impedance (EI) to determine the kinetic parameters associated with immunoreactions carried out on the electrode. Second, an electrochemical immunosensor based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIE) was developed to determine microcystin-LR in drinking water samples. Microcystin-LR determination was based on a label-free non-competitive immunoassay. The electrochemical immunosensor shows a limit of detection (LOD) of 33 pg mL�1 (3.32 � 10�11 mol L�1 or 0.033 mg L�1) which is well below the WHO guideline recommendation of 1 mg L�1 and 40 times better than the LOD obtained using the same antibody in an optimized conventional competitive ELISA assay. In addition, an acceptable accuracy, with recovery percentages close to 100% were found.
