With the aim of controlling the first steps in HgI2 film growth onto amorphous substrates, we employed HgI2 nanoparticles for nucleation. Hg(NO3)2 and NaI were used for obtaining HgI2 in water with and without citric or oxalic acid as capping agents. These samples were then subjected to a hydrothermal treatment at a constant temperature of 120 ºC during 2 h. All samples were washed, centrifuged and dried. This method presents a facile route for obtaining HgI2 nanoparticles and is easily scalable. HgI2 tetragonal phase was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. Nanoparticles were characterized in their size and morphology by transmission electron microscopy and the capping agent presence was studied by infrared spectroscopy. HgI2 nanoparticles synthesized in octadecene, previously reported, as well as nanoparticles obtained in the present work, were used for nucleation onto amorphous substrates. They were deposited onto floating silica glass by spin coating and the morphology of the layer was studied by atomic force microscopy. The results we obtained are the first involving HgI2 nucleation by spin coating, and are very promising for improving the film growth orientation and therefore the current applications of this material, as well as for opening new ones. Synchrotron X-ray thermodiffraction in air shows a phase transition from orthorhombic Pmmm to tetragonal P4/mmm space groups at ~ 425°C. The chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC) electrolyte was investigated in air where certain reactivity was observed above 800 °C. However, the main phase is Ba(Ce1-xYx)O3, a good ionic conductor. The catalytic performance in air was obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements on YBC/GDC/YBC symmetrical cells. The area specific resistance (ASR) values change from 13.66 to 0.14 Ω cm2 between 500 and 800 °C, with activation energy (Ea) of 0.41 eV. Nanocrystalline La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Cu0.2O3−δ (LSFCu) material was synthetized by combustion method using EDTA as fuel/chelating agent and NH4NO3 as combustion promoter. Structural characterization using thermodiffraction data allowed to determine a reversible phase transition at 425 °C from a low temperature R-3c phase to a high temperature Pm-3m phase and to calculate the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of both phases. Important characteristics for cathode application as electronic conductivity and chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O2−δ (CGO) electrolyte were evaluated. LSFCu presented a p-type conductor behavior with maximum conductivity of 135 S cm−1 at 275 °C and showed a good stability with CGO electrolyte at high temperatures. This work confirmed that as prepared LSFCu has excellent microstructural characteristics and an electrical conductivity between 100 and 60 S cm−1 in the 500–700 °C range which is sufficiently high to work as intermediate temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFCs) cathode. However a change in the thermal expansion coefficient consistent with a small oxygen loss process may affect the electrode-electrolyte interface during fabrication and operation of a SOFC. Chagas’ disease, considered incurable, is a major third world parasitosis that affects millions of people in Latin America. Previous work has shown that ruthenium clotrimazole complexes are more active against Trypanosoma cruzi , causative agent of Chagas’ disease, than the corresponding free ligand. In this work, the synthesis and characterization of a series of new Ru(II) complexes with different antitrypanosomal active compounds is presented. Complexes of general formulae [RuIICl2(dmso)2L], where dmso�/ dimethylsulfoxide and L�/5-nitro-2-furaldehyde semicarbazone (L1), N4-n-butyl-5-nitro-2-furaldehyde semicarbazone (L2) or 3- (5-nitrofuryl)acroleine semicarbazone (L3), were prepared in good yields by reaction of [RuIICl2(dmso)4] with L in ethanol or toluene solutions. Complexes were characterized by elemental analyses and electronic, FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. Crystal and molecular structures of [RuCl2(dmso)2L1] and [RuCl2(dmso)2L2] were determined by X-ray diffraction methods. In both crystals the ruthenium metal atom is in a quite similar elongated octahedral environment, equatorially coordinated to the semicarbazone molecule, acting as a bidentate ligand through its azomethynic nitrogen and carbonylic oxygen atoms. The sixfold coordination is completed with the sulfur atoms of two dimethylsulfoxide ligands at cis positions and two chlorine ions at the axial positions. The proposed formula for L3 complex was supported by FTIR, NMR and theoretical studies. NOE�/NMR experiments allowed to assign L3 spatial distribution in the complex. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the classic factors involved in tumor-induced angiognesis in several solid tumors. Bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody against VEGF, can be used as an imaging tool in preclinical studies. The aim of this study was to radiolabel Bevacizumab with (99m)Tc and to evaluate in vivo its imaging properties in an adenocarcinoma animal model. For this purpose, Bevacizumab was derivatized with Suc-HYNIC as a bifunctional coupling agent. A mixture of Tricine/SnCl(2).2H(2)O was added to Bevacizumab-HYNIC and radiolabeled with (99m)TcO(4)(-). The radiochemical stability of the radiolabeled antibody was assessed. Biodistribution and scintigraphy imaging were performed in normal CD1 female mice and in spontaneous adenocarcinoma tumor bearing CD1 mice (n = 5). We demonstrated that 99mTc-HYNIC-Bevacizumab was stable. In vivo biodistribution studies revealed that tumor uptake of (99m)Tc-HYNIC-Bevacizumab was 1.37 ± 0.51% and 5.33 ± 2.13% at 4 and 24 h postinjection, respectively. Scintigraphy image studies showed tumor selective uptake of (99m)Tc-HYNIC-Bevacizumab in the tumor-bearing mice. We conclude that (99m)Tc-HYNIC-Bevacizumb has the potential to be used as a tracer for tumor imaging in preclinical studies. The objective of this work was to develop a novel 99mTc complex bearing the 5-nitroimidazol-1-yl moiety with recognised selectivity towards hypoxic tissue, as a potential radiopharmaceutical for imaging tumour hypoxia. The new metronidazole derivative (2-amine-3-[2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethylthio]propanoic acid) (L) containing adequate groups to coordinate technetium through the formation of a Tc(I)-tricarbonyl complex was synthesised with adequate yield (33%) and characterised by spectroscopy. Labelling was performed by substitution of three labile water molecules of the technetium tricarbonyl precursor, fac-[99mTc(CO)3(H2O)3]+ with the ligand. A radiochemical purity higher than 90% was achieved and remained unchanged for more than 4 h. The complex has a high stability in plasma, a moderate plasma protein binding and a moderate hydrophilicity. In vitro cell uptake studies showed a ratio between the activity taken up by cells in hypoxia/normoxia of 1.6 ± 0.4 (p < 0.5). Biodistribution in normal mice showed rapid depuration and low uptake in all organs and tissues except liver. Biodistribution in mice bearing induced tumours showed a low tumour uptake, but tumour/muscle ratio was favourable thanks to depuration. Comparison with biological results of other metronidazole derivatives clearly shows that modifications of the chelator are very important and contribute to improve the biological behaviour. A new series of heteroaryl nitrones were synthesized and evaluated as free radical traps due to the results showed in our previous report. The physicochemical characterization of these new nitrones by electron spin resonance (ESR) demonstrated their high capability to trap and stabilize different atom centered free radicals generated by the Fenton reaction. Additionally, we intensely studied them in terms of their physicochemical properties. Kinetic studies, including the use of a method based on competition and the hydroxyl adduct decay, gave the corresponding rate constants and half-lives at the physiological pH of these newly synthesized nitrones. New nitrones derived from quinoxaline 1,4-dioxide heterocycles were more suitable than DMPO to trap hydroxyl free radicals with a half-life longer than two hours. Crocidosema (= Epinotia) aporema (Walsingham) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a bud borer that feeds on soybean and forage legumes. Its economic importance is restricted to South America, where it can alternate throughout the year between forage and grain legumes. The sex pheromone of C. aporema females is composed of a 15:1 mixture of (7Z,9Z)-dodeca-7,9-dien-1-ol and (7Z,9Z)- dodeca-7,9-dienyl acetate. Aiming at the development of a monitoring tool, it was synthesized both components of the pheromone and evaluated male captures in pheromone traps baited with different blends of synthetic pheromone, in an experimental soybean field in Uruguay. The conjugated dienes were obtained from 2-pentyn-1-ol and 1,7-heptanediol, by oxidation of the former, Wittig coupling and Zn-catalyzed reduction of the triple bond. The 1:1 mixture was the most efficient in capturing males. The pheromone traps were attractive for up to 40 days, even with small septum loads (0.1 mg) and low population levels. As part of an ongoing program on the chemistry and biological activity of N-oxide-containing molecules, a number of novel 1,2,5-oxadiazole N-oxide, benzo[1,2-c]1,2,5-oxadiazole N-oxide, and quinoxaline N,N¢-dioxide derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their herbicidal activity. Many of these compounds exhibited moderate to good herbicidal pre-emergence activity against Triticum aestivum. Dose-response studies were done on the more representative compounds (12, 20, and 26). The most active compound, butylcarbamoylbenzo[1,2-c]1,2,5-oxadiazole N-oxide, 26, displayed herbicidal activity at concentrations as low as 24 g/ha. La4BaCu5O13+δ (LBCu) and La6.4Sr1.6Cu8O20±δ (LSCu) oxygen deficient perovskites, synthesized by a Pechini-type gel combustion method, have been investigated as potential cathode materials for IT-SOFC applications. The thermal stability and chemical compatibility with SOFC/PCFC electrolyte materials are examined using X-ray diffraction technique. For both compounds, no structural change is detected in air until 900 °C. The evolution of cell parameters with temperature shows thermal expansion coefficients (TEC) of 17.3 × 10− 6 K− 1 and 12.1 × 10− 6 K− 1 for LBCu and LSCu, respectively. For LBCu, the formation of oxygen vacancies is evidenced between 700 and 900 °C in air. Chemical reactivity tests with several SOFC electrolyte materials reveal a high reactivity of both cuprates with YSZ, GDC and, to a lesser extent, with LSGM. On the other hand, and contrary to what occurs for LSCu, LBCu presents an excellent chemical compatibility with doped barium cerate and zirconate, opening further perspectives for this material as possible SOFC or PCFC cathode. A series of Tc(V) cationic complexes was synthesized by electrochemical reduction of TcO4. The electrolysis was performed in aqueous media containing amines as ligands: en |b dien |b trien and 1,2-dap. The combination of different techniques alloes to propose the general formula [TcO2/amine/2]+ for these compounds. Electrodeposition of TcO2 was a competitive reaction. The UV spectra were compared with those for other Tc(V) amine complexes. The presence of two peaks |b one in the range 303-312nm and the other in 230-240nm |b could be verified. The latter was markedly sensitive to pH changes. Preliminary studies showed that kinetic stability decreases in the sequence en |b 1,3-dap |b trien |b dien. The decomposition rate increased when the pH was lowered. A new imidazolium hydrated salt (DCF-IMI-H2O) of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Diclofenac (DCF) was synthesized by solvent evaporation. This salt was fully characterized by X-ray diffraction (SCXRD, PXRD), infrared<br />spectroscopic (FT-IR) and thermal analysis (TGA, DSC, HSM) techniques. The salt formation is driven by deprotonation of the drug's carboxylic group, with proton transfer to the nitrogen atom of the imidazole ring. The water molecule plays an<br />important role in the 3D arrange observed in the crystal lattice, acting as a bridge between adjacent DCF and coformer molecules. The DCF-IMI-H2O exhibits an improved solubility profile when compared with the pure form of DCF, and similar<br />values when compared with sodium and potassium salts. This new salt proved stable under 75% relative humidity for one week and is stable after six-months storage at room conditions. The study of its thermal stability showed that a dehydration<br />process starts at around 45 ºC, leading to the probably formation of an unstable anhydrous form, which melting around 92°C. Spectroscopic studies showed that most of the salt is ionized when in amorphous state (liquid). These behaviors<br />features the new compound as an ionic liquid (IL), i.e., organic salt with melting point below 100 ºC.
