A convenient, instrumentally simple, and efficient methodology to transform 1,2-dihydropyridines into benzoic esters is described. The generated multisubstituted benzoic esters feature different topologies spanning from simple aromatic rings to fused benzocycloalkane systems. As an extension of this methodology, these benzoic esters are efficiently transformed into an array of fluorenone frameworks featuring interesting and novel topological patterns.

In the search for candidates of antiparasitic new drugs, macrocycle analogs and key fragments of aerucyclamides were obtained. The activities against Trypanosoma brucei brucei and cytotoxicities on murine macrophages (cell line J774) were evaluated. Two of the prepared compounds displayed similar anti-trypanosomal activities as aerucyclamides B and C. In addition, the compound with the highest activity presents a 150-fold selectivity (SI ¼ 150) for the parasite than against the murine macrophage

The synthesis of jasmone and related jasmonoids and pyrethroids is described. These compounds play a defensive role in plants and share a common cyclopentenone core with variations in the side chains. Jasmone, cinerone, allylrethrone, and derivatives were synthesized through π-allyl palladium cross-coupling of stannane derivatives. With selective hydrogenation, dihydrojasmone, and dihydrocinerone were also synthesized.

Herein, we describe an approach toward selenazole preparation based on the cycloisomerization of propargyl selenoamides. The selenoamides were synthesized in situ using the Ishihara reagent with spontaneous cyclization to form the 2,5-disubstituted selenazoles. Heterocylcles 9a-j were prepared using readily available starting materials, and yields ranged from moderate to good (20-80%). Methylselenazole 9a could be transformed into a bromomethyl derivative 13 using NBS. The intermediate 13 would provide a more versatile building block for further derivatizations, e.g., the cyanide 14.

Arbitrarily defined as organic salts with melting points below 1001C, ionic liquids (ILs) have gained considerable notoriety in the past decade. Owing to their negligible vapor pressure, thermal stability, and tunable solvent properties, these materials have found applications in a wide range of laboratory and industrial processes.1 As part of efforts aimed at better understanding the liquid structure of imidazolium-based ILs, we have shown that intraionic hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) interactions in 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl (1), Figure 1) are evidenced by sizable deuterium isotope effects on the chloride ion 35/37Cl NMR signal (i.e. D35/37Cl(H,D)).2 Measurements obtained on the [C4mim]Cl isotopologues [2-d1]-[C4mim]Cl and [2,4,5-d3]-[C4mim]Cl led to D35/37Cl(H,D) values of up to 2 ppm, and corroborated the presence of H-bonds between the anion and the imidazolium cation protons on the C-2, C-4, and C-5 positions. Recent theoretical studies indicate that H-bonding between the anion and protons along the N-alkyl groups could also have an impact on the structure and dynamics of this class of ILs.3,4 Based on our previous results, these anion–cation interactions could be detected experimentally by measurement of deuterium isotope effects on the 35/37Cl NMR signal of the chloride ion. For this purpose, we decided to synthesize a series of [C4mim]Cl deuterium isotopologues sequentially labeled along the N-alkyl group carbons (Figure 1a–e). These could also be easily converted by metathesis to the corresponding tetrafluoroborate and hexafluorophosphate imidazolium salts (i.e. [C4mim]BF4 and [C4mim]PF6), which would be suitable for the study of interionic H-bonds through analysis of deuterium isotope effects on the 10/11B, 19F, and 31P signals of the BF! 4 and BF! 6 anions. In this manuscript we describe a strategy which uses similar routes to minimize the number of distinct reactions needed to prepare these compounds. As detailed below, good yields after the initial deuterium incorporation reaction were achieved in several cases through the combination of well-established chemical transformations into efficient single-step processes.

wo new mixed-valence iron complexes with 2-pyridyl oximes, [Fe(mpko)3Fe(H2O)2(NO3)](NO3)·2H2O (1) (mpko− = methyl(2-pyridyl)ketone oximate) and [{Fe(dpko)3}2Fe](ClO4)·4H2O (2) (dpko− = bis(2-pyridyl)ketone oximate), have been prepared by reaction of FeIII with mpkoH in methanol (1) and FeII with dpkoH in methanol/water (2). Dinuclear FeII(low-spin)FeIII(high-spin) and trinuclear FeII(low-spin)FeIII(high-spin)FeII(low-spin) cations are present in the crystal structure of 1 and 2, respectively. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds in 1 lead to weak antiferromagnetic interactions between pairs of neighboring FeIII centers, which allows observation of single-ion zero-field splitting effects. Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In this work we present the comprehensive design of lithium titanate nanotubes (LiTNT) as semiconductors for DSSC photoanodes. The synthesis and characterization of Li1.82Na0.18Ti3O7.nH2O nanotubes was performed and a prototype of cell using this material was assembled. The cell exhibited a 7.7% efficiency and a relatively high open circuit voltage, Voc = 0.72 V. In comparison with previously obtained hydrogen titanate nanotubes (HTNT), improvements have been achieved, like better charge carriers’ lifetime and lower series resistance. In order to study this system, we carried out previous DFT simulations for this lithium titanate nanotubes through different model's complexity levels which were able to correctly predict its properties. Due to the improvements achieved this system would encourage further studies with the aim to explore its potential for solar cells applications.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Alkylisocyanide complexes of copper(I) with formula [Cu(CNR)4]BF4 [where R = 2-methoxyisobutyl and 2-(carbomethoxy)-2-methylethyl] were synthesized by direct reaction of cuprous chloride with ligand. The stability of solid complexes and their aqueous solutions were tested by HPLC. Comparative studies were carried out on electronic, IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Crystal structures of [Cu(MIBI)4]BF4 and [Cu(CPI)4]BF4 were determined from X-ray data and show a tetrahedral arrangement of ligands around the central copper atom in both compounds.

In this work, complexes containing mercaptothiazolines, and mono- and diphosphines with the general formula [Ru(N −S) 2 (P) 2 ] or [Ru(N −S) 2 (P-P)] –N–S −: 1,3-thiazoline-2-thionate (tzt −- a ) and benzo-1,3- thiazoline-2-thionate (bzoxt −- b ), and P 2 = monophosphine: P{ p -tol} 3 –2 ; P-P = dppe –3 , dppp –4 , dppb –5 , dppf –6 or DPEPhos –7 were synthesized. The complexes were characterized by 1 H and 31 P NMR, vibrational spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and the molecular structures of 3a, 4a, 5a, 6a •CH 2 Cl 2 and 7a were solved by X-ray diffraction. The Hirshfeld surface analysis and the 2D fingerprint plots were performed. The 1 H NMR spectra of the compounds revealed the signals of the ligands and the main feature is the absence of the N H signal of the protonated ligands TztH and BzoxtH supporting the coordi- nation in their anionic forms, which is also evidenced by the vibrational spectroscopy and molar conduc- tivity studies. The 31 P{ 1 H} NMR spectra present only one singlet indicating the chemical equivalence of both phosphorus nuclei and in a region compatible with phosphorus cis -positioned for the P( p -tol) 3 and for the potentially trans -spanning dppf and DPEPhos, whereas for the other diphosphines (dppe, dppp and dppb) only the cis -configuration is expected. The molecular structure revealed the Ru center is sited on a distorted octahedral geometry mainly as a consequence of the formation of four-membered chelate rings involving the N–S −ligand. The coordination sphere is completed with two phosphorus atoms po- sitioned in a cis -fashion while trans to the nitrogen atoms of the tzt −ligand, and the remaining sulfur donors (thiolate) of tzt −ligand positioned trans to each other. The cyclic voltammograms of the com- plexes presented one monoelectronic and reversible process attributed to the Ru 3 + /Ru 2 + couple, and for the complexes with dppf an additional redox process is observed due to the Fe 3 + /Fe 2 + couple.

We report the chemical synthesis route, structural characterization, and physical properties of nanofluid magnetic graphite �NFMG� obtained from the previously synthesized bulk organic magnetic graphite �MG� by stabilizing the aqueous ferrofluid suspension with an addition of active cationic surfactant. The measured magnetization-field hysteresis curves along with the temperature dependence of magnetization confirmed room-temperature ferromagnetism in both MG and NFMG samples.

A summary of the resource.
The synthesis and microbiological evaluation of two new Ag(I) complexes with sulfamoxole (SMX), [Ag2(SMX)2]·H2O and [Ag4(SCN)3(SMX)]·H2O are described. Both were characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, Raman and experimental and theoretical IR spectroscopies. Their antibacterial and antifungal properties were evaluated by agar and broth dilution assays, respectively. In addition, synergism tests for Pseudomonas aeruginosa were performed, and genotoxicity studies were carried out employing the Allium cepa test. Both complexes displayed good activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, P. aeruginosa, and 10 fungi strains, with lower minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) than that of free SMX in all cases. The nanometrical crystallite particle size determined from XRPD, DLS and TEM might explain the good microbiological activity in spite of the low solubility of both complexes. The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) calculated from the P. aeruginosa test data indicated that the activity of the complexes is not due to synergism of the free components in the concentration ratios studied. Moreover, none of the complexes displayed cytotoxic effects on onions in the concentration range tested, and chromosome aberrations were not observed.

The use of the mononuclear rhenium(IV) precursor [ReBr5 (H2 pydc)](-) (H2 pydc=3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) as a metalloligand towards dysprosium(III) afforded the first heterobimetallic Re(IV) -Dy(III) complex. Crystal structures and static and dynamic magnetic properties of both rhenium-containing species are reported herein. The 5d-4f compound shows an extended 1D structure and the AC magnetic measurements reveal frequency dependence at low temperature suggesting slow relaxation of the magnetization.

The syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic properties of four rhenium(IV) compounds of formulae NBu4[ReCl5(pyzCOOH)]·H2O (1), [ReCl5(µ-pyzCOO)M(dmphen)2]·2CH3CN [M = Ni (2) and Co (3)] and {[ReCl5(µ3-pyzCOO)]2Mn2(dmphen)3}n (4) (NBu4 = tetra-n-butylammonium cation, pyzCOOH = 2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid, dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) are reported herein. Compound 1 was obtained by the reaction of NBu4[ReCl5(dmf)] (dmf = dimethylformamide) with pyzCOOH in acetone, whereas the other complexes were obtained by the reaction of 1 with M(ClO4)2·6H2O [M = Ni (2), Co (3), Mn (4)] and dmphen in acetonitrile. Complex 1 is a mononuclear compound, 2 and 3 are neutral heterodinuclear complexes and 4 is a neutral chain in which each pyzCOO– bridges one ReIV and two MnII in a very unusual µ3-binding mode. Compounds 2 and 3 behave as magnetically isolated species with intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling between ReIV and NiII or ReIV and CoII ions, respectively. In turn, weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the MnII ions through anti-syn-carboxylate bridges together with weak ferromagnetism below 3.1 K due to small spin canting is observed in 4.

Three novel Re(IV) compounds, the mononuclear complex Bu4N[ReBr5(Hpyzc)] (1) and the heterobimetallic complexes [ReBr5(l-pyzc)M(dmphen)2]·2CH3CN [M = Co (2), Ni (3)] (Hpyzc = 2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid, dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline), have been synthesized and their crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of 1 consists of [ReBr5(Hpyzc)]− complex anions and tetrabutylammonium cations, Bu4N+. TheRe(IV) is surrounded by five bromide anions and a N-donor Hpyzc monodentate ligand, in a distorted octahedral environment. The structures of 2 and 3 consist of dinuclear units [ReBr5(l-pyzc)M(dmphen)2], with the metal ions linked by a pyzc bridge ligand, being bidentate toward M(II) and monodentate toward Re(IV). The environment of Re(IV) is the same as in 1, whereasM(II) is six-coordinate, being surrounded by four nitrogen atoms of two bidentate dmphen ligands and one oxygen atom and one nitrogen atom of the pyzc anion. The magnetic properties of 1–3 were investigated in the temperature range 2.0–300 K. 1 shows the expected magnetic behavior for a mononuclear Re(IV) complex with a weak intermolecular antiferromagnetic coupling at low temperatures. The bimetallic complexes exhibit an intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling between Re(IV) and the M(II) ion (Co, Ni).

Four novel Re(II) complexes of formula NBu4[Re(NO)Br4(L)] [NBu4+ = tetra-n-butylammonium cation and L = pyridine (1), pyrazine (2), pyrimidine (3), pyridazine (4)] have been prepared by a substitution reaction involving NBu4[Re(NO)Br4(EtOH)] and L. Their crystal structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. They are all mononuclear complexes whose structure is made up of [Re(NO)Br4L]− anions and NBu4+ cations. Each Re(II) ion is six-coordinate with four bromide ligands, a linear nitrosyl group and one monodentate nitrogen donor L building a tetragonally distorted octahedral surrounding. The Re–Br bond distances cover a narrow range [2.5048(8)–2.5333(5) Å] and they are longer than the Re–NO [1.688(15)–1.736(3) Å] and Re–N bonds [2.219(4)–2.234(3) Å]. The magnetic properties of 1–4 have been investigated in the temperature range 1.9–295 K. They behave like quasi magnetically isolated spin doublets with very weak antiferromagnetic interactions through intermolecular Br⋯Br contacts. Their magnetic properties are discussed through a deep analysis of the influence of the ligand field, spin–orbit coupling, tetragonal distortion and covalence effects. The values of the temperature-independent paramagnetism for 1–4 are also substantiated and compared to those previously reported in related systems.<br /><br />

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The coordination ability of the antisecretor agent Famotidine (FMT) was explored using Ni(II) as central ion. [ NiFMTH-2] and [Ni(FMT)2]Cl2 were obtained by the solvent evaporation method from the corresponding starting solutions at pH 8 and 4, respectively; the crystal structure was elucidated by single crystal X-ray diffraction in both cases.[NiFMTH-2] resulted in a distorted square-planar geometry, where FMT acts as a tetradentate dianionic ligand through nitrogen atoms belonging to the guanidine group, the thiazolic ring and the side chain, and a sulfur atom from the thioether moiety. [Ni(FMT)2]Cl2 exhibits an octahedral environment composed by two FMT molecules that coordinate by nitrogen atoms deriving from guanidine and thiazole ring moieties, and the thioether sulfur atom. The physicochemical characterization was completed by means of FTIR and UV–Vis spectroscopies, and thermal analysis. Solubility measurements were performed and the results could be satisfactorily correlated with the solvation Gibbs free energy (ΔGsolv) values in aqueous solution obtained using the SDM model by DFT calculations

The reaction of CrCl36H2O with the ligand bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)methane (L) yielded the cationic complex [(Cr(L)(H2O)2Cl2]+, which crystallized as the chloride trihydrate [(Cr(L)(H2O)2Cl2]Cl·3H2O. The chromium complex was characterized by elemental analysis, electrical conductivity, Infrared and Ultraviolet/Visible spectroscopy. The crystal structure determination using single-crystal X-ray diffraction showed a chromium center in a distorted octahedral coordination sphere. In the crystal, the packing was directed by OH⋯(O,Cl) hydrogen bonds and weak CH⋯O interactions to build a monoclinic P21/c supramolecular structure. The complex showed excellent properties as an initiator for the ring opening polymerization of є-caprolactone (CL) under solvent-free conditions. The obtained polymer showed high crystallinity (89.9%) and a decomposition temperature above 475 °C. In addition, the new complex was evaluated against epimastigotes from Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) strains. The results indicated that this complex has a high activity against this parasite with a minimum inhibitory concentration 50 (MIC50) of 1.08 μg/mL. Interestingly, this compound showed little effect on erythrocytes, indicating that it is not cytotoxic. These results provide interesting contributions to the design of metal complexes by using simple and accessible ligands with activity against T. cruzi and with potential applications in the polymerization of CL.

Two novel rhenium(IV) compounds, namely (NBu4)[ReCl5(pym)] (1) and (NBu4)[ReCl5(pyd)] (2) (pym = pyrimidine, pyd = pyridazine and NBu4 = n-tetrabutylammonium cation), have been obtained by reaction of [ReCl6]2� and the diazine in dmf, and their crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of 1 and 2 consist of [ReCl5(pym)]� or [ReCl5(pyd)]� anions and NBu4þ cations held together by electrostatic forces and van der Waals interactions. Stacking interactions are present only in 1. The coordination sphere of the ReIV ion is defined by five chloride anions and one nitrogen atom of a monodentate diazine, resulting in a distorted octahedral environment. Voltammetric profiles in CH3CN show a one-electron reduction step at ca. �0.5 V vs. NHE for both complexes. Magnetic measurements reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions among the metal centers in the crystal lattices of 1 and 2, superimposed to the well-known zero-field splitting of Re(IV) compounds. � 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Reaction of sodium picolinate with FeIII oxo-centered carboxylate triangles in MeCN in the presence of PPh4Cl yields (PPh4)[Fe4O2(O2CR)7(pic)2] (R = Ph (1), But (2)). Omitting the phosphonium cation produces [Fe8Na4O4(O2CPh)16(pic)4(H2O)4] (3), which contains two Fe4Na2 units bridged by two picolinate ligands. X-ray crystal structures of 1 and 3 are reported. Voltammetric profiles in MeCN show four one-electron reduction steps for complexes 1 and 2. Variable- temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements in polycrystalline samples of 1 and 3 reveal strong antiferromagnetic couplings leading to S = 0 ground states.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
<p>The evaluation of oxygenation status of solid tumors is an important field of radiopharmaceutical research. With the aim to develop new potential 99mTc-radiopharmaceuticals for imaging hypoxia, we have synthesized two novel isocyanide derivatives of metronidazole, which has demonstrated high affinity for hypoxic tumors in vitro and in vivo. Methods: Metronidazole derivatives 4-isocyano-N-[2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl]butanamide (M1) and 1-(4-isocyanobutanoyl)- 4-[2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl]piperazine (M2) were synthesized, and labeling was performed through preparation of their corresponding 99mTc-(4+1) complexes, 99mTc-NS3M1 and 99mTc-NS3M2. The structure of the technetium complexes was corroborated by preparation and characterization of the corresponding rhenium complexes. We have studied the main physicochemical properties (stability, lipophilicity and plasma protein binding). Biological behavior in HCT-15 cells both in oxia and in hypoxia was assessed. Biodistribution in normal mice and in animals bearing induced 3LL Lewis murine lung carcinoma was also studied. Results: Metronidazole derivatives were successfully synthesized. Labeling with high radiochemical purity was achieved for both ligands. 99mTc complexes were stable in labeling milieu and human plasma. However, presence of the piperazine linker in M2 resulted in higher lipophilicity and protein binding. Although cell uptake in hypoxic conditions was observed for both radiotracers, 99mTc-NS3M2 biodistribution was considered unsuitable for a potential radiopharmaceutical due to high liver uptake and poor blood clearance. However, 99mTc-NS3M1 demonstrated a very favorable in vivo profile both in normal mice and in mice bearing induced tumors. Conclusion: Selective uptake and retention in tumor together with favorable tumor/muscle ratio make 99mTc-NS3M1 a promising candidate for further evaluation as potential hypoxia imaging agent in tumors.</p>

Introduction: Hypoxia imaging is an important field in radiopharmaceutical research since hypoxic cells are very resistant to radiation treatment and diffusional limitations restrict the efficacy of chemotherapy. Gallium-68 is a widely used radionuclide for positron emission tomography (PET) due to the availability of the 68Ge/68Ga-generator. With the aim to develop new potential [68Ga]-radiopharmaceuticals for imaging hypoxia, we have synthesized and evaluated two novel 68Ga-labelled 5-nitroimidazole derivatives. Methods: Two 5-nitroimidazole derivatives, 10-[2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1 H-imidazole-1-yl)ethylaminocarbonylmethyl]- 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7-triacetic acid (Nit1) and 10-{[N-methyl-1-[1-(2-(2-methyl- 5-nitro-1 H-imidazole-1-yl)ethyl)-1 H-1,2,3-triazole-4-yl] methylaminocarbonylmethyl}-1,4,7,10- tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7-triacetic acid (Nit2) were synthesized. Preparation of [68Ga]complexes [68Ga]- Nit1 and [68Ga]-Nit2 was performed at pH 4.5 and 95 °C during 15 minutes and radiochemical purity (RP) was evaluated by reverse phase HPLC. Stability, lipophilicity and plasma protein binding were studied. Biological behaviour in HCT-15 cells both in normoxia and hypoxia has been assessed. Biodistribution in animals bearing induced 3LL Lewis murine lung carcinoma was studied. Comparison with [18F]FMISO is also presented. Results: Nit1 and Nit2 have been successfully synthesized. Labelling in high radiochemical purity was achieved for both ligands. Complexes are stable in labellingmilieu for at least four hours and in human plasma or in the presence of an excess of DTPA for at least two hours. Both compounds showed high uptake in hypoxic cells in vitro and a very favourable biodistribution profile in mice bearing induced tumours. Results are comparable to those obtained for [18F]FMISO. Conclusions: Selective uptake and retention in tumour together with favourable tumour/muscle ratio make these compounds promising candidates for further evaluation as potential hypoxia imaging agents.

A novel Re(IV) complex containing catechol as ligand has been prepared and characterized. The crystal structure of (HNEt3)(NBu4)[ReCl4(cat)]�H2cat was determined. The rhenium ion presents a distorted octahedral geometry, being bonded to a bidentate catecholate group and four chloride anions. The magnetic properties of the complex were studied, a /2D/ (the energy gap between ±3/2 and ±1/2 Kramers doublets) value of 190(10) cm�1. This is the largest /2D/ value reported for Re(IV) up to now. �
