A summary of the resource.
The coordination ability of the antisecretor agent Famotidine (FMT) was explored using Ni(II) as central ion. [ NiFMTH-2] and [Ni(FMT)2]Cl2 were obtained by the solvent evaporation method from the corresponding starting solutions at pH 8 and 4, respectively; the crystal structure was elucidated by single crystal X-ray diffraction in both cases.[NiFMTH-2] resulted in a distorted square-planar geometry, where FMT acts as a tetradentate dianionic ligand through nitrogen atoms belonging to the guanidine group, the thiazolic ring and the side chain, and a sulfur atom from the thioether moiety. [Ni(FMT)2]Cl2 exhibits an octahedral environment composed by two FMT molecules that coordinate by nitrogen atoms deriving from guanidine and thiazole ring moieties, and the thioether sulfur atom. The physicochemical characterization was completed by means of FTIR and UV–Vis spectroscopies, and thermal analysis. Solubility measurements were performed and the results could be satisfactorily correlated with the solvation Gibbs free energy (ΔGsolv) values in aqueous solution obtained using the SDM model by DFT calculations

The reaction of CrCl36H2O with the ligand bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)methane (L) yielded the cationic complex [(Cr(L)(H2O)2Cl2]+, which crystallized as the chloride trihydrate [(Cr(L)(H2O)2Cl2]Cl·3H2O. The chromium complex was characterized by elemental analysis, electrical conductivity, Infrared and Ultraviolet/Visible spectroscopy. The crystal structure determination using single-crystal X-ray diffraction showed a chromium center in a distorted octahedral coordination sphere. In the crystal, the packing was directed by OH⋯(O,Cl) hydrogen bonds and weak CH⋯O interactions to build a monoclinic P21/c supramolecular structure. The complex showed excellent properties as an initiator for the ring opening polymerization of є-caprolactone (CL) under solvent-free conditions. The obtained polymer showed high crystallinity (89.9%) and a decomposition temperature above 475 °C. In addition, the new complex was evaluated against epimastigotes from Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) strains. The results indicated that this complex has a high activity against this parasite with a minimum inhibitory concentration 50 (MIC50) of 1.08 μg/mL. Interestingly, this compound showed little effect on erythrocytes, indicating that it is not cytotoxic. These results provide interesting contributions to the design of metal complexes by using simple and accessible ligands with activity against T. cruzi and with potential applications in the polymerization of CL.

Two novel rhenium(IV) compounds, namely (NBu4)[ReCl5(pym)] (1) and (NBu4)[ReCl5(pyd)] (2) (pym = pyrimidine, pyd = pyridazine and NBu4 = n-tetrabutylammonium cation), have been obtained by reaction of [ReCl6]2� and the diazine in dmf, and their crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of 1 and 2 consist of [ReCl5(pym)]� or [ReCl5(pyd)]� anions and NBu4þ cations held together by electrostatic forces and van der Waals interactions. Stacking interactions are present only in 1. The coordination sphere of the ReIV ion is defined by five chloride anions and one nitrogen atom of a monodentate diazine, resulting in a distorted octahedral environment. Voltammetric profiles in CH3CN show a one-electron reduction step at ca. �0.5 V vs. NHE for both complexes. Magnetic measurements reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions among the metal centers in the crystal lattices of 1 and 2, superimposed to the well-known zero-field splitting of Re(IV) compounds. � 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Reaction of sodium picolinate with FeIII oxo-centered carboxylate triangles in MeCN in the presence of PPh4Cl yields (PPh4)[Fe4O2(O2CR)7(pic)2] (R = Ph (1), But (2)). Omitting the phosphonium cation produces [Fe8Na4O4(O2CPh)16(pic)4(H2O)4] (3), which contains two Fe4Na2 units bridged by two picolinate ligands. X-ray crystal structures of 1 and 3 are reported. Voltammetric profiles in MeCN show four one-electron reduction steps for complexes 1 and 2. Variable- temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements in polycrystalline samples of 1 and 3 reveal strong antiferromagnetic couplings leading to S = 0 ground states.

<p>The evaluation of oxygenation status of solid tumors is an important field of radiopharmaceutical research. With the aim to develop new potential 99mTc-radiopharmaceuticals for imaging hypoxia, we have synthesized two novel isocyanide derivatives of metronidazole, which has demonstrated high affinity for hypoxic tumors in vitro and in vivo. Methods: Metronidazole derivatives 4-isocyano-N-[2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl]butanamide (M1) and 1-(4-isocyanobutanoyl)- 4-[2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl]piperazine (M2) were synthesized, and labeling was performed through preparation of their corresponding 99mTc-(4+1) complexes, 99mTc-NS3M1 and 99mTc-NS3M2. The structure of the technetium complexes was corroborated by preparation and characterization of the corresponding rhenium complexes. We have studied the main physicochemical properties (stability, lipophilicity and plasma protein binding). Biological behavior in HCT-15 cells both in oxia and in hypoxia was assessed. Biodistribution in normal mice and in animals bearing induced 3LL Lewis murine lung carcinoma was also studied. Results: Metronidazole derivatives were successfully synthesized. Labeling with high radiochemical purity was achieved for both ligands. 99mTc complexes were stable in labeling milieu and human plasma. However, presence of the piperazine linker in M2 resulted in higher lipophilicity and protein binding. Although cell uptake in hypoxic conditions was observed for both radiotracers, 99mTc-NS3M2 biodistribution was considered unsuitable for a potential radiopharmaceutical due to high liver uptake and poor blood clearance. However, 99mTc-NS3M1 demonstrated a very favorable in vivo profile both in normal mice and in mice bearing induced tumors. Conclusion: Selective uptake and retention in tumor together with favorable tumor/muscle ratio make 99mTc-NS3M1 a promising candidate for further evaluation as potential hypoxia imaging agent in tumors.</p>

Introduction: Hypoxia imaging is an important field in radiopharmaceutical research since hypoxic cells are very resistant to radiation treatment and diffusional limitations restrict the efficacy of chemotherapy. Gallium-68 is a widely used radionuclide for positron emission tomography (PET) due to the availability of the 68Ge/68Ga-generator. With the aim to develop new potential [68Ga]-radiopharmaceuticals for imaging hypoxia, we have synthesized and evaluated two novel 68Ga-labelled 5-nitroimidazole derivatives. Methods: Two 5-nitroimidazole derivatives, 10-[2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1 H-imidazole-1-yl)ethylaminocarbonylmethyl]- 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7-triacetic acid (Nit1) and 10-{[N-methyl-1-[1-(2-(2-methyl- 5-nitro-1 H-imidazole-1-yl)ethyl)-1 H-1,2,3-triazole-4-yl] methylaminocarbonylmethyl}-1,4,7,10- tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7-triacetic acid (Nit2) were synthesized. Preparation of [68Ga]complexes [68Ga]- Nit1 and [68Ga]-Nit2 was performed at pH 4.5 and 95 °C during 15 minutes and radiochemical purity (RP) was evaluated by reverse phase HPLC. Stability, lipophilicity and plasma protein binding were studied. Biological behaviour in HCT-15 cells both in normoxia and hypoxia has been assessed. Biodistribution in animals bearing induced 3LL Lewis murine lung carcinoma was studied. Comparison with [18F]FMISO is also presented. Results: Nit1 and Nit2 have been successfully synthesized. Labelling in high radiochemical purity was achieved for both ligands. Complexes are stable in labellingmilieu for at least four hours and in human plasma or in the presence of an excess of DTPA for at least two hours. Both compounds showed high uptake in hypoxic cells in vitro and a very favourable biodistribution profile in mice bearing induced tumours. Results are comparable to those obtained for [18F]FMISO. Conclusions: Selective uptake and retention in tumour together with favourable tumour/muscle ratio make these compounds promising candidates for further evaluation as potential hypoxia imaging agents.

A novel Re(IV) complex containing catechol as ligand has been prepared and characterized. The crystal structure of (HNEt3)(NBu4)[ReCl4(cat)]�H2cat was determined. The rhenium ion presents a distorted octahedral geometry, being bonded to a bidentate catecholate group and four chloride anions. The magnetic properties of the complex were studied, a /2D/ (the energy gap between ±3/2 and ±1/2 Kramers doublets) value of 190(10) cm�1. This is the largest /2D/ value reported for Re(IV) up to now. �

Within all the eukaryotic cells there is an important group of biomolecules that has been potentially related to signalling functions: myo-inositol phosphates (InsPs). In nature, the most abundant member of this family is the so called phytate (InsP6, L12−). The importance of the interaction of InsP6 with cations has been recognized during the last few years, and any attempt to know the function of this molecule in eukaryotic cells must include the fact that InsP6 will be strongly associated with simple inorganic or organic ammonium cations. In this work we expand on our earlier findings by studying the systems phen–phytate (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) and Cu(II)–phen–phytate. The structures of (Hphen)4(H8L)·7.5H2O and [Cu5(H7L)2(H2O)2(phen)5]·23H2O are presented. Solution studies of the binary and ternary systems were also performed by means of potentiometric titrations at 37.0 °C and 0.15 M ionic strength. The work was completed with a molecular modelling study. All this information is essential in the process of gaining reliable structural knowledge about the most important InsP6 species in the in vitro and in vivo experiments, and how these features modulate their probable biological functions.

A novel Re(V)-Re(II) nitrosyl complex, [Re(O)2(pyz)4][Re(NO)Br4(pyz)] (pyz = pyrazine) was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, infrared and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra. This product is obtained in the initial steps of the reaction of (NBu4)[Re(NO)Br4(EtOH)] with pyrazine. Both, the cation and the anion are mononuclear complexes. The Re(V) atom in the cation is six-coordinate with four nitrogen atoms from pyrazine ligands, and two oxo ligands. The Re(II) anion is also six-coordinate, with four bromide ligands, a linear nitrosyl group and one nitrogen from pyrazine. The spectroscopic studies are discussed and compared with those already reported separately for the cation and the anion.

In this work, 2-isopropenyl-3-methylphenol, hereafter referred to as carquejiphenol (CARP), a minor component of “carqueja” essential oil, was synthesized starting from carquejol and characterized by using Fourier Transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopies, Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Visible) spectroscopy, Electron Impact Mass spectrometry (EI-MS), Hydrogen and Carbon Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H- and 13C-NMR) and 2D 1H1H gCOSY, 1H13C gHSQC, 1H13C gHMBC experiments. A very good correlation between the predicted FTIR, FTRaman, UV–visible and 1H13C-NMR spectra for monomer and dimer of CARP by using theoretical B3LYP/6-31G* and 6-311++G** calculations with the corresponding experimental ones was observed. The solvation energies for CARP were predicted by using both levels of calculations and considering the solvent effects with the polarised continuum and solvation models. The increase in volume in solution supports the H bonds formation due to the presence in its structure of an OH group, as revealed by atoms in molecules (AIM) analysis. A high stability for CARP was found by using natural bond orbital (NBO) and AIM studies, while the investigation of the frontier orbitals reveals that CARP is more reactive than carquejol and N-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-hexadecanamide but less reactive than the sesquiterpene lactone cnicin. The proximity of both the electrophilicy and nucleophilicity index of CARP with those obtained respectively for carquejol and for N-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-hexadecanamide, suggests that CARP could probably present pharmacological properties. The scaled quantum mechanical force field (SQMFF) methodology was used to compute the harmonic force fields and to perform the complete vibrational analysis. In this way, 63 normal modes of vibration were assigned and compared with other terpene substances.

Using the di-2,6-(2-pyridylcarbonyl)pyridine ligand (L1) as starting framework, five new mononuclear complexes were obtained: [Cu(L1)(MeCN)(ClO4)2] (1) [Co(L1)(MeCN)(Br)2]�MeCN (2), [Fe(L1)2](BF4)2� MeOH�H2O (3), [Cr(L2a)Cl2]�2MeOH (where HL2a is (6-(hydroxyl(methoxy)(pyridin-2-yl)methyl) pyridin-2-yl)(pyridin-2-yl)methanone) (4) and one trinuclear [NiII 3] complex, [Ni3(L2b)2(Bz)2(EtOH)2] (ClO4)2�2EtOH (where HL2b is (6-(hydroxyl(ethoxy)(pyridin-2-yl)methyl)pyridin-2-yl)(pyridin-2-yl) methanone; Bz = benzoato) (5). Their structural and magnetic characterizations are herein reported. All the metal ions show octahedral coordination geometry, which is slightly unusual for the L1-based Cu(II) complex 1. Formation of complexes 4 and 5 is accompanied by the metal-assisted solvent addition to one carbonyl group of the L1 ligand with methanol or ethanol leading to the deprotonated mono-hemiacetals L2a and L2b ligands respectively. The trinuclear [NiII 3] compound 5 shows two different bridging units: two L2b units and two benzoato (Bz) ligands. 5 represents the smallest polynuclear compound in the known {NiII(L1-based)}n (n = 5,6) series. The magnetic properties of the five complexes have been investigated. While compounds 1–4 show the expected magnetic behavior for mononuclear species, 5 exhibits intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions between the NiII (S = 1) ions stabilizing an ST = 3 ground state.

Copper coordination complexes are increasingly recognized as potential drugs for therapeutic use in various diseases, especially in cancer. In an attempt to find new leaders for the development of antitumor Cu compounds, heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes with triphenylphosphine (PPh3) and dimethylbipyridine (dmbpy), phenanthroline (phen) or neocuproine (neo) were prepared and characterized. The compounds [CuCl(dmbpy)(PPh3)] (1), [CuCl(phen)(PPh3)]⋅0,25H2O (2) and [CuCl(neo)(PPh3)] (3) were obtained. The crystal structures of compounds 2 and 3 were determined. In both complexes, the Cu(I) centre presents distorted tetrahedral coordination. All complexes present cytotoxic activity, against tumor cell lines, being more active than Cisplatin, with IC50 in the low micromolar range. This activity augments in the order 1 < 2 < 3, following the same order as the lipophilicity.

A summary of the resource.
In the search for new compounds with antitumor activity, coordination complexes with different metals are being studied by our group. This work presents the synthesis and characterization of six copper complexes with general stoichiometry [Cu(L-dipeptide)(phen)]·nH2O (were phen= 1,10-phenanthroline) and their cytotoxic activities against tumor cell lines. To characterize these systems, analytical and spectroscopic studies were performed in solid state (by UV–visible, IR, X-ray diffraction) including the crystal structure of four new complexes (of the six complexes studied): [Cu(Ala-Phe)(phen)]·4H2O, [Cu(Phe-Ala)(phen)]·4H2O, [Cu(Phe-Val)(phen)]·4.5H2O and [Cu(Phe-Phe)(phen)]·3H2O. In all of them, the copper ion is situated in a distorted squared pyramidal environment. The phen ligand is perpendicular to the dipeptide, therefore exposed and potentially available for interaction with biological molecules. In addition, for all the studied complexes, structural information in solution using EPR andUV– visible spectroscopieswere obtained, showing that the coordination observed in solid state ismaintained. The lipophilicity, DNA binding and albumin interaction were also studied. Biological experiments showed that all the complexes induce cell death in the cell lines: HeLa (human cervical adenocarcinoma),MCF-7 (human metastatic breast adenocarcinoma) and A549 (human lung epithelial carcinoma). Among the six complexes, [Cu(Ala-Phe)(phen)] presents the lowest IC50 values. Taken together all these data we hypothesize that [Cu(Ala-Phe)(phen)] may be a good candidate for further studies in vivo.

As a part of our studies of copper(II) complexes with possible antitumor activity, the synthesis and structural characterization of two new copper terpyridine (terpy) complexes: [Cu(terpy)(SO4)(H2O)]·2H2O and [Cu2(terpy)2(SO4)2]·4H2O are presented. The crystal structures show that the copper ion in both complexes is in a square pyramidal environment, coordinated equatorially to the terpy N atoms and completing the coordination with O atoms from the sulfate or water molecules. The second compound is a sulfate bridged dinuclear complex. In aqueous solution the coordination scheme is modified. Taking the crystal structure as a starting point the geometries of the complexes were optimized and vibrational spectroscopy calculations were performed allowing an assignation of the experimental IR spectra. Finally, the interaction of the complexes with DNA was studied, by UV titration and docking studies of the complexes. The results suggest that the interaction occur by minor groove interaction and partial insertion of the terpy into the DNA bases and that terpy interaction with DNA is strongly influenced by the Cu-coordination process.

A summary of the resource.
The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization (UV–Vis, IR, EPR) of a new copper complex with a betablocker propranolol (1-(isopropylamino)-3-(1-naphthyloxy)-2-propanol) are presented. Besides, the Xray crystal structure of [Cu(propranolol)2]�2H2O is determined, showing two different copper ions, one coordinated through two S propranolol isomers and the other through two R isomers. The effect on the heart contraction force and on the heart rate plus the block of response to adrenaline of the complex and the free ligand, were studied. The effect of [Cu(propranolol)2]�2H2O on contractility was very similar to that of the free propranolol while the reduction on the heart rate is approximately 30% of the reduction obtained with the free ligand. This is an encouraging result since the search of new beta-blocker drugs that have lesser effect on heart rate is one of the important topics in cardiac pharmacology. The block of the response to adrenaline is at least similar for both ligand and complex.

Zinc borates are very important industrial materials with applications that include fire retardants and preservatives in wood. In this work, we report the preparation of three novel zinc borates: [Zn(NH3)3B4O5(OH)4]·H2O (ZB1), Zn3(H2B3O7)2·2NH3·4H2O (ZB2), and [Zn(NH3)4][B4O5(OH)4]·4H2O (ZB3). The solid phases were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis. The crystal structures of ZB1 (monoclinic, Cc, a = 12.1972(8), b = 7.8314(5), c = 12.1441(8) Å and β = 107.404(5)°) and ZB3 (orthorhombic, Pbca, a = 15.0796(9), b = 11.8853(5) and c = 16.7606(8) Å) were determined. They are novel neutral Zn-polyborate complexes [Zn(NH3)3B4O5(OH)4] hydrate and [Zn(NH3)4][B4O5(OH)4] tetrahydrate salt, respectively. The complete assignment of infrared and Raman spectra was performed theoretically using DFT calculations. For ZB2 (obtained as a polycrystalline phase), powder X-ray diffraction confirmed a single phase and allowed the determination of the unit cell parameters and lattice type (rhombohedral, a = 36.78076 (6), c = 12.20052 (3) Å) with an expected formula Zn3(H2B3O7)2·2NH3·4H2O suggesting that this compound is a complex triborate. Furthermore, a low-cost scalable synthetic procedure for ZB1 starting from zinc oxide and boric acid in ammonia solution with a high yield is also reported.

In the search for alternative chemotherapeutic strategies against leukemia, various 1-indanone thiosemicarbazones, as well as eight novel platinum(II) and palladium(II) complexes, with the formula [MCl2(HL)] and [M(HL)(L)]Cl, derived from two 1-indanone thiosemicarbazones were synthesized and tested for antiproliferative activity against the human leukemia U937 cell line. The crystal structure of [Pt(HL1)(L1)]Cl.2MeOH, where L1=1-indanone thiosemicarbazone, was solved by X-ray diffraction. Free thiosemicarbazone ligands showed no antiproliferative effect, but the corresponding platinum(II) and palladium( II) complexes inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. Platinum(II) complexes also displayed selective apoptotic activity in U937 cells but not in peripheral blood monocytes or the human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cell line used to screen for potential hepatotoxicity. Present findings show that, in U937 cells, 1-indanone thiosemicarbazones coordinated to palladium(II) were more cytotoxic than those complexed with platinum(II), although the latter were found to be more selective for leukemic cells suggesting that they are promising compounds with potential therapeutic application against hematological malignancies.

In this paper, we report the structural design, synthesis, trypanocidal activity and docking studies of novel quinoxaline-N-acylhydrazone (NAH) derivatives, planned as cruzain inhibitors candidates, a cysteine protease essential for the survival of Trypanosoma cruzi within the host cell. The salicylaldehyde N-acylhydrazones 7a and 8a presented IC50 values of the same magnitude order than the standard drug nifurtimox (Nfx), when tested in vitro against epimastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi (Tulahuen 2 strain) and were non-toxic at the highest assayed doses rendering selectivity indexes (IC50 (macrophages)/ IC50 (Trypanosoma cruzi)) of >25 for 7a and >20 for 8a, with IC50 values in macrophages >400 lM.

Abstract—A series of synthetic chalcones, flavanones, and flavones has been synthesized and evaluated for antitumor activity against the human kidney carcinoma cells TK-10, human mammary adenocarcinoma cells MCF-7 (estrogen receptor-positive), and human colon adenocarcinoma cells HT-29. The most active series is the chalcone ones with the best results against TK-10 and HT-29 cells. Fourteen out of 53 analyzed compounds resulted very active against at least two of the studied tumoral cells. Alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis, comet assay, was performed as a study of the chromosomal aberrations promoted by the compounds on normal cells. Four active and two inactive chalcones were studied in the comet assay against normal human kidney cells (HK-2). A structure–activity relationship analysis of these compounds was performed and for 4- and 3,4-disubstituted derivatives a quantitative correlation was obtained in the case of anti-HT-29 activity

Chagas’ disease, or American trypanosomosiasis, has been the most relevant illness produced by protozoa in Latin America. Synthetic medicinal chemistry efforts have provided an extensive number of chemodiverse hits at the “active-to-hit” stage. However, only a more limited number of these have been studied in vivo in models of Chagas’ disease. Herein, we survey some of the cantidates able to surpass the “hit-to-lead” stage discussing their limitations or merit to enter in clinical trials in the short term.

An organocatalyzed asymmetric [4+2]‐cycloaddition between tropolones and electron‐deficient dienophiles is presented. Complex and biologically interesting dihydrohomobarrelenone scaffolds are formed through a Diels‐Alder reaction utilizing bifunctional Brønsted‐base catalysis, affording the corresponding bridged bicyclic cycloadducts in up to quantitative yields with good enantio‐ (up to 92% ee) and diastereoselectivity (up to >20:1 d.r.). The synthetic value of the obtained products are explored by downstream transformations, including photoisomerizations, and biological relevancy by in‐vivo testing in MCF‐7 cancer cells.

In the present study, we explored the reactivity of 5- hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a renewable platform chemical, as the aldehyde component in the Groebke-Blackburn-Bienaymé (GBB) multicomponent reaction. Given the limited stability of 5-HMF under conventional conditions used for this reaction, acidic milieu in combination with high temperature or long reaction times, we explored factors which influence the course of the reaction (solvent, catalyst, time, and temperature) within the guidelines of previously reported green reaction conditions. Mild conditions and short reaction times were achieved to obtain good conversion and selectivity values. The reaction scope was exemplified by preparing a small compound library based on the optimized conditions varying the amidine and the isocyanide component. The hydroxymethylfuran moiety present in the GBB products, imidazo[1,2-a]heterocycles, provides useful functionalization for further transformations, which could expand the diversity of the chemical space.

<p>Syringic and cinnamic acids were previously identified as the major components on Rapanea ferruginea0s leaf extract. In this work, these phenolic acids were investigated and correlated in two aspects. The first one was referred to their role against DPPH and hydroxyl radicals, considering the concentration detected in R. ferruginea extract. The second one considered their effects on the physico-chemical properties of soy asolectin liposomes, such as hydration degree, trans-gauche isomerization, vibrational, rotational and translational motions, state-of-phase, size and surface charge. The half-maximum inhibitory concentration (IC50) related to syringic acid in DPPH assays was detected as 7.36 � 10�3 mM.<br />At the cinnamic acid highest tested concentration (8.23 � 10�3 mM), the activity against DPPH was<br />around 4.6%. Regarding hydroxyl radical-induced lipid peroxidation, the IC50 detected for syringic acid free in solution (free-form) was equivalent to 0.082 � 10�3 mM, a value 3.6 times lower than the detected for its liposome-loaded form. At the highest tested concentration (0.24 � 10�3 mM), the free-form cinnamic acid inhibited lipid peroxidation by 4 times the observed to its liposome-loaded form. Results showed that hydrogen donation is not the preferential mechanism in which the tested phenolic acids inhibit hydroxyl radical-induced lipid peroxidation. Syringic acid showed higher antioxidant potential than cinnamic acid, probably having a primordial role in the properties related to R. ferruginea. Liposomes’ physico-chemical data provided correlations between the phenolic acids’ antioxidant potential and their influence in the mobility of specific lipid groups. The findings of this work will contribute to the design and development of phenolic acids-based and plant extract-based pharmacological systems.</p>
