OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how information about low nutrient content included in the traffic light labeling system influences consumers' perception of the healthfulness of products with high content of 1 key nutrient, and to compare the traffic light system with warnings in terms of the perception of healthfulness. DESIGN: Images of front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition labels (the traffic light labeling system with different numbers of nutrients with low content, and warnings) were evaluated in study 1, whereas product labels featuring the different FOP nutrition labels were evaluated in study 2. SETTING: Online studies conducted in Montevideo, Uruguay. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1,228 Uruguayan Facebook users. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Perception of healthfulness. ANALYSIS: The researchers used ANOVA to evaluate the influence of FOP nutrition labels on perceived healthfulness. RESULTS: The inclusion of information about low nutrient content in the traffic light system statistically significantly increased the perception of the healthfulness of products with high nutrient content. Nutritional warnings showed healthfulness ratings similar to those of the simplified version of the traffic light system. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Information about low nutrient content in the traffic light system might be used to infer health, and thus could raise the perception of healthfulness and decrease the traffic light system's efficacy in discouraging the consumption of unhealthful products. A simplified version of the traffic light highlighting only high-nutrient content or nutritional warnings seems to overcome this problem. Here, we report the preparation of PEDOT:PSS-MoS2 nanocomposite thin films and their electrical resistance response under humidity conditions revealing their promising properties as humidity sensor materials. One of the most interesting features of our samples is the transition from positive to a negative electrical resistance response to humidity conditions with increasing MoS2 additions. Our confocal Raman imaging studies revealed that the presence of MoS2 yields a local charge rearrangement in the thiophenyl rings of PEDOT:PSS, in relation to the enhancement of the electrical resistance negative response as observed by impedance spectroscopy analysis. The enhancement on the negative response with increasing MoS2 additions could be explained through the increment of hole carriers in MoS2 nanosheets under humidity conditions, thus leading to an enhancement in the electrical transport along the PEDOT:PSS chains. It is found that, using an extended 6-311 + + G(3df,3pd) basis set, the predicted stabilization enthalpy of the initial LiFH complex (–34•6 kJ mo1-1) and the exoergicity of the reaction (–7•3 kJ mo1-1) are predicted in agreement with experiment (&sim; – 31 kJ mo1-1 and – 4•8 ± 8 kJ mo1-1, respectively). These results are also in agreement with the MRDCI calculations (&sim; – 31•5 kJ mo1-1 and – 9 kJ mo1-1, respectively). However, the energy of the transition state with respect to the reactants at the B3LYP level is about 25 kJ mo1-1 lower than the MRDCI result (which agrees with the QCISD and G2 values). Therefore, it is concluded that B3LYP is not describing this reaction properly. It is shown, however, that this defect is due mainly to the inclusion of the LYP correlation functional instead of the Perdew–Wang originally considered by Becke for developing his adiabatically connected functional. When B3PW91 is considered instead of B3LYP, the height of the transition state is in better agreement with the conventional ab initio methods, although still off by 50%. An analysis is presented of the catalytic mechanism of glutathione reductase based upon a theoretically characterized saddle point of index one obtained for a model representing the active groups of the flavine and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, namely, an isoalloxazine and nicotinamide rings. The isoalloxazine rings appears deformed into a butterfly conformation in the saddle point of index one. The butterfly conformation is retained along the path leading to a reduced isoalloxazine (N5-H) forcing the transferred hydrogen to stick into the nicotinamide binding site, this geometric feature suggests the existence of a transposed hydride transfer path where the N5-proton goes back to a lysine residue leaving the electrons on FAD. This mechanism is discussed and proposed as an alternative catalytic pathway in glutathione reductase to the standard electron transfer one. These results help to understand the riddle created by the changing kinetic behavior of glutathione reductase when, for instance, 2,4,6-trinitro-benzene sulfonate is used to study in vitro kinetics or when specific site directed mutagenesis is performed. The subfamily Cerambycinae, one of the most diverse in longhorn beetles, is well known for its remarkable chemical parsi mony in male-emitted pheromones. Conserved shared structural motifs have been reported in numerous species, sometimes working in combination with plant volatile kairomones. Among other compounds, the most ubiquitous male pheromone in cerambycine species is 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one. We conducted feld trials using intercept traps baited with 3-hydroxyhexan- 2-one and observed abundant captures of several Neotropical cerambycine species. These were Retrachydes thoracicus thoracicus (Olivier), Megacyllene acuta (Germar), Compsocerus violaceus (White), and Cotyclytus curvatus (Germar) in high numbers, as well as Chydarteres striatus striatus (Fabricius) and Odontocroton favicauda (Bates) in smaller numbers. When ethanol was added to the traps, a remarkable increase in the attractiveness of 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one was observed for R. thoracicus thoracicus and M. acuta. Adding ethanol also resulted in the capture of Chrysoprasis aurigena (Germar). Finally, incidental catches in pheromone-baited traps of Trachelissa maculicollis (Audinet-Serville), Neoclytus pusillus (Laporte & Gory), Achryson unicolor (Bruch, 1908) and Achryson surinamum (Linnaeus), Megacyllene mellyi (Chevrolat) and Thelgetra adustus (Burmeister) were also observed. Pheromone chemistry has been reported for C. curvatus, M. acuta and N. pusillus, all three producing 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one, and for C. aurigena and A. surinamum, which produce other compounds. Our fndings suggest that the captured species probably produce 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one for their pheromone communication system. Alternatively, they might be “eavesdropping” on the pheromones of other cerambycine species. The probable synergistic efect of ethanol is likely explained from its kairomonal role as a volatile cue for plant stress or ripeness. Protected Areas (PAs) are locations for conservation, internationally recognized for their natural, ecological, and/or cultural values. Human presence in PAs is generally limited to minimal or banned exploitation of natural resources. However, different threats to PAs are evident as a result of short and long-range transport of organic pollutants of legacy and emerging concern. There has been a shift of interest in legacy pollutants such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to emerging compounds, resulting in a need for improved monitoring strategies in PAs. Here, we highlight the main advances in environmental analytical chemistry for legacy and emerging pollution monitoring in PAs. Trends in sampling, sample preparation and instrumental determination of multiclass organic pollutants in biotic and abiotic matrices are presented and discussed. Here, we considered the most relevant and recent literature regarding organic pollutants in PAs from terrestrial to aquatic landscapes collected within 2015 to the present time frame.
