A summary of the resource.
Blends of beef tallow and high-oleic sunflower oil at different proportions were interesterified using enzyme catalysis (Lipozyme TL IM) and the products were analyzed by DSC and HPLC. According to fatty acid composition, the nutritional properties of the products were improved in comparison with the original beef tallow, due to the reduction in the levels of saturated fatty acids and the increase of monounsaturated ones. The melting temperature of the blend with 40% of higholeic sunflower oil decreased from 45 to 37ºC after interesterification, which, from the standpoint of a fatty material to be used in foods, represents a considerable advantage with respect to beef tallow. DSC analysis of the products from interesterification showed the disappearance of polymorphs with high melting points found in the starting blends, possibly corresponding to β-type crystals, something that is also a beneficial aspect of the process under study.

Although beef tallow (BT) has been considered a hard low-trans fat convenient to be used in several bakery applications, it has some undesirable characteristics like fatty acid composition, crystallization behavior, graininess formation and poor plastic range. This work studied the modification of BT by blending at different percentages with high oleic sunflower oil (HOSFO) followed by the enzyme-catalyzed interesterification of the blends. The reduction in the solid fat content achieved by the simple blending was enhanced by the interesterification process, as a result of the increase in the concentration of the diunsaturated monosaturated type triacylglycerols. Interesterification strongly impacted too on the crystallization behavior of the blends, since products showed more homogeneous and regular crystals than the starting mixture. Results show that lipase catalyzed interesterification of BT with HOSFO offers a useful tool for the design of fats with adjustable physicochemical properties, improved with respect to that of the starting fats.

Although nowadays landspreading and incineration are the conventional disposal methods for the primary sludge (PS) and biosludge (BS) generated in the wastewater treatment plants of the pulp mill industry in Uruguay, their direct incineration for energy recovery is the most preferable one. Here, we propose the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method as a pre treatment to improve the fuel characteristic of PS and BS. Proximate and ultimate analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis show that the HTC afects PS and BS diferently regarding carbon fxation, energy densifca tion and energy conversion efciency. Moreover, ash composition measured by X-ray fuorescence indicates that the HTC efectively diminishes the slagging and fouling indexes for both feedstocks, which can increase the life expectancy of boil ers. Alternative PS, BS, and their hydrochars were activated with H3PO4 to produce activated carbons, i.g. the BET specifc surface area was as high as 800 m2 /g for PS-AC, and exhibits CO2 adsorption capacity of 5 mmol/g at 10 bar at 273 K. These studies provide alternatives to direct incineration and landspreading of PS and BS in Uruguay to reduce their environmental impact, either by enhancing their fuel quality or by converting them into much more valuable products to face air pollution.

Vanadium is a transition metal that, being ubiquitously distributed in soil, crude oil, water and air, also found roles in biological systems and is an essential element in most living beings. There are also several groups of organisms which accumulate vanadium, employing it in their biological processes. Vanadium being a biological relevant element, it is not surprising that many vanadium based therapeutic drugs have been proposed for the treatment of several types of diseases. Namely, vanadium compounds, in particular organic derivatives, have been proposed for the treatment of diabetes, of cancer and of diseases caused by parasites. In this work we review the medicinal applications proposed for vanadium compounds with particular emphasis on the more recent publications. In cells, partly due to the similarity of vanadate and phosphate, vanadium compounds activate numerous signaling pathways and transcription factors; this by itself potentiates application of vanadium-based therapeutics. Nevertheless, this non-specific bio-activity may also introduce several deleterious side effects as in addition, due to Fenton’s type reactions or of the reaction with atmospheric O2, VCs may also generate reactive oxygen species, thereby introducing oxidative stress with consequences presently not well evaluated, particularly for long-term

In the search for new therapeutic tools against diseases produced by kinetoplastid parasites five vanadyl complexes, [VIVO(L-2H)(phen)], including 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and tridentate salicylaldehyde semicarbazone derivatives as ligands have been synthesized and characterized in the solid state and in solution by using different techniques. EPR suggested a distorted octahedral geometry with the tridentate semicarbazone occupying three equatorial positions and phen coordinated in an equatorial/axial mode. The compounds were evaluated in vitro on epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease, Leishmania panamensis and Leishmania chagasi and on tumor cells. The complexes showed higher in vitro antitrypanosomal activities than the reference drug Nifurtimox (IC50 values in the range 1.6–3.8 μM) and increased activities in respect to the free semicarbazone ligands. In vitro activity on promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania showed interesting results. The compounds [VO(L1-2H)(phen)] and [VO(L3-2H) (phen)], where L1 = 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde semicarbazone and L3 = 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde semicarbazone, resulted active (IC50 2.74 and 2.75 μM, respectively, on promastigotes of L. panamensis; IC50 19.52 and 20.75 μM, respectively, on intracellular amastigotes of L. panamensis) and showed low toxicity on THP-1 mammalian cells (IC50 188.55 and 88.13 μM, respectively). In addition, the complexes showed cytotoxicity on human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells with IC50 values of the same order of magnitude as cisplatin. The interaction of the complexes with DNA was demonstrated by different techniques, suggesting that this biomolecule could be a potential target either in the parasites or in tumor cells

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
As a contribution to the development of novel vanadium complexes with pharmacologically interesting moieties, new dioxovanadium( V) semicarbazone complexes with the formula cis-VO2L, where L = 5-bromosalicylaldehyde semicarbazone and 2-hydroxynaphtalen- 1-carboxaldehyde semicarbazone have been synthesized. and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, Raman and FTIR spectroscopies. Results were compared with those previously reported for other three analogous complexes of this series. The five complexes were tested in three different human tumor cell lines for bioactivity as potential anti-tumor agents, showing selective cytotoxicity on TK-10 cell line. Results showed that structural modifications on the semicarbazone moiety could have a significant effect on the anti-tumor activity of the vanadium complexes. In addition, the electrochemical behavior of all the complexes was studied. No apparent correlation could be demonstrated between reduction potentials of the complexes and their anti-tumor activities. The molecular structure of the novel [VVO2(5-bromosalicylaldehyde semicarbazone)] complex was solved by X-ray diffraction methods. The vanadium atom shows a distorted square pyramidal coordination sphere. The (VO2)+ cation is coordinated to a nearly planar (L)� anion acting as a tridentate ligand through both oxygen and one nitrogen atoms.

A summary of the resource.
Studies exploring the effect of compounds that modulate the endocannabinoid system on sexual behavior have yielded contradictory results. However, the effect of smoked Cannabis in women has been consistently associated with an increase in sexual drive. Therefore, it can be speculated that vaporized Cannabis will augment sexually motivated components of the sexual behavior of female rats. To test this hypothesis, we compared the sexual behavior of late-proestrous female rats in a bilevel chamber after vaporizing 0, 200 or 400 mg of Cannabis flowers (containing 18% of delta-9-THC and undetectable levels of cannabidiol) during 10 min. We found that both doses of Cannabis increased the duration of the lordosis response, whereas the highest dose also reduced the lordosis quotient of females. The lowest dose of Cannabis augmented the display of hops and darts without altering the expression of sexual solicitations of females, while the highest one did not affect the expression of hops and darts but reduced sexual solicitations. These effects were not accompanied by alterations of females' ambulatory behavior. The increment of the duration of lordosis response produced by both doses of Cannabis could be associated to a general effect of this drug in sensory processing, as can be an enhancement of females' sensory reactivity to male's stimulation. However, the reduction in the display of solicitations and lordosis in response to mounting observed in females exposed to the highest dose when compared to control and 200 mg of Cannabis groups indicates a reduction of sexual receptivity and motivation. This differential effect of vaporized Cannabis according to the dose employed, suggests that it modulates sexual behavior in a complex way, impacting neural circuits that control different aspects of this social behavior.

<p>Nutraceutical properties of mandarins are of great interest to promote their consumption. The occurrence of free amino acids in foods is relevant to assess the nutritional value of it. To learn more about the amino acids’ occurrence and variability between species, a targeted metabolomics study in ‘Ellendale’, ‘Willowleaf’ and ‘Page’ varieties was performed through ion exchange liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The studied amino acids were asparagine, glutamic acid, glutamine, histidine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, threonine and tyrosine. The difference between two consecutive seasons was evaluated, as well as the influence of fruit maturity of ‘Page’ collected in two periods of 2015. The analytical methodology was validated. The concentration of the compounds through principal component analysis, separated well apart the three cultivars in both harvests, showing a particular profile for each of them. When comparing mature and immature cultivar ‘Page’, the amino acids with higher levels in mature samples were histidine, asparagine, glutamine and glutamic acid. The profiles were different due to genetic diversity, and the climatic conditions. These results add value to citric production.</p>

Gas and liquid chromatography (GC and LC) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) serve as the most powerful analytical tools commonly used to monitor pesticide residues in food, among other applications. However, both GC–MS and LC–MS are susceptible to matrix effects which can adversely affect quantification depending on the analyte, matrix, sample preparation, instrumentation, and operating conditions. Among the approaches that reduce matrix effects, the most common in pesticide residue applications is matrix-matched calibration because it is relatively inexpensive and simple. Also, it has been shown to work well during method validation when fortified samples are exactly matched with samples used for calibration. However, the quality of matrix-matched results in real-world analyses depends on the consistency of matrix effects among diverse samples. In this study, the variability of matrix effects was measured for 38 representative pesticides in 20 samples each (including different varieties) of rice, orange, apple, and spinach extracted using the “quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe” (QuEChERS) method for analysis by LC–MS/MS and low-pressure GC–MS. Using LC–MS/MS, only oranges gave >20% matrix effects for a few pesticides. GC–MS exhibited larger matrix effects, but as in LC–MS/MS, the differences were reasonably consistent among the 20 samples tested. Main conclusions of this study are that for the conditions utilized: (1) matrix-matching was not needed for most pesticides in the simpler food matrices; and (2) for the more complex orange matrix, acceptably accurate quantitative results were achieved by using matrix-matching even with a different sample of the same type. However, full confidence cannot be extended to matrix-matched results, and for consequential applications such as regulatory enforcement, confirmatory analyses using alternate quantitative determinations should also be conducted.

Fatty acids’ ethyl and methyl esters are not natural components of edible vegetable oils and therefore should not be present in virgin olive oils. Among the quality requir ements for extra virgin o live oils, the International Olive Council (IOC) Norm, 2 015 review, set limits for the ethyl ester content at ≤ 435 ppm for the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 harvests and at ≤ 30 ppm for the 2016/2017 harvest. The purpose of this paper is to: (a) determine th e alkyl ester content in two extra virgin olive oils (of th e Arbequina and Coratina varieties) as parame ters of quality at the moment of their el aboration and to assess the length of their shelf life, over a 12 month period at room temper ature; (b) determine extra virgin olive o ils’ free alcohols conten t as these may est erify due to the free fatty acids present during storage. After 6 months of storage, the Arbequina oil’ s ethyl ester content was 32 ppm, and the Coratina’s was 46 ppm. As a result, the shelf life for both was only about half a year (labeling usually indicates it must be c onsumed “before 1 year”). However, parameters related to oxidation (peroxide index, K 232, K 270 and ∆ K) remained within the limits set by the International Olive Council (IOC) throughout the year. In conc lusion: ethyl ester content is a very fine parameter for asse ssing the quality of extra virgin in an olive oil and determining the length of its shelf life.

Baccharis trimera (Less.) DC is a South American plant that in folk medicine is considered to produce reduction in blood pressure. One aspect of this putative effect is the vasorelaxation. The aim of this work was to evaluate the ability of a B. trimera extract to relax rat aortic rings precontracted with noradrenaline. As the infusion is the usual way of intake of this plant, an infusion of B. trimera was prepared using 100g of the plant (leaves) boiled in water, frozen and lyophilized. Working solutions were prepared using different concentrations of the dried extract diluted in Krebs Henseleit solution. It was proved that the infusion relaxed the aortic rings in a dose dependent manner 100 minutes after adding the extract to the bath. Considering as 100% the maximum contraction achieved with noradrenaline, a relaxation of 101.1±2.3% was observed with the highest dose of the infusion used in these experiments (0.32mg/mL). While in control rings relaxation was 12.9±2.4%. In aortic rings denuded from endothelium the percentage of vasoralaxation did not show statistically significant differences when compared to intact rings. These data support the hypothesis of a vasorelaxant effect of this plant and constitutes the first approach to the scientific basis of a potential antihypertensive effect. Efflux transporter and enzyme overexpression can be induced by certain antiepileptic drugs. Phenytoin (PHT) is at the same time substrate and inducer of CYP2C isoenzymes and efflux carriers. Its inductive effect has been postulated to be concentration and timedependent. Since verapamil (VPM) is a well known substrate and inhibitor of P-glycoprotein, its administration could modify PHT systemic exposure. The objective of this work was to determine if single doses (40 mg/kg) of VPM might change PHT body fate in the same way when given at the beginning or several days after 100 mg/kg of PHT daily doses were started. Both drugs were administered intraperitoneally to female Sprague Dawley rats. VPM increased plasma PHT concentrations after one day of treatment, while a decrease in PHT plasma exposure was observed when VPM was added at the fifth day of the antiepileptic treatment. These results suggested that VPM would have different impact on PHT pharmacokinetics, depending on the level of expression of both efflux transporters and enzymes. Before the hepatic cells could acquire a high content of enzymes due to the inductive effect of PHT dosing, VPM decreased the predominant intestinal clearance of PHT. But, once the enzymatic machinery at the hepatocyte became more important than that at the intestine, although ineffective because of the high hepatobiliary efflux transporter overexpression, VPM blockade from the liver resulted in an increased total PHT clearance.
