Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Here, we intend to review those patents related with the technology of dye sensitized solar cells. In particular we discuss patents and papers that enable metal oxide layer to be more controllable and feasible for applications, and new and innovative dyes, sensitizers and electrolytes with promising features. Finally various methods were reviewed for fabricating semiconductor layers and complete DSSC devices focusing on the mass production of photovoltaic cells.

Cytochrome P450 enzymes and efflux transporters, expressed in the intestine and/or in the liver, play important roles in drug clearance and oral bioavailability. The relative contribution of transporters and enzymes in drug metabolism is still controversial. Some antiepileptic drugs, such as carbamazepine, phenytoin and phenobarbital (phenobarbitone), show time-dependent and dose-dependent pharmacokinetics due to their inductive effect on both efflux transporters and enzymes. However, steady-state plasma drug concentrations for each antiepileptic drug do not relate to oral daily dose in the same way, with decreased or increased apparent clearance according to the drug. A multicompartment pharmacokinetic model was developed in order to explain these different behaviours using a single mechanism of inductive action. The key for solving these apparent dissimilarities was to consider in the model the unique physiological connection that intestine, liver and bloodstream have. Efflux transporters not only enhance enzymatic competition in relation to first-order processes, but also change the predominance of some elimination routes. For instance, the carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide formation increases at the expense of other carbamazepine metabolites, enhancing both the systemic and presystemic elimination of parent drug. Conversely, the major hepatic metabolism of phenytoin diminishes in favour of its minor intestinal elimination, decreasing the total drug clearance.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
La preparación de derivados de glucosa marcados con 99mTc reviste gran interés para la evaluación del consumo de glucosa in vivo en oncología y cardiología nuclear. Este trabajo presenta la marcación de un análogo de glucosa (GLU-DTC) mediante la formación de un complejo Tc(V)-nitruro simétrico. Para ello se incorporó a la biomolécula un grupo ditiocarbamato capaz de coordinar al metal. La marcación fue realizada mediante sustitución de ligandos, obteniéndose una única especie con pureza radioquímica superior al 90%, la que se mantuvo durante al menos 4 hs. La caracterización fisicoquímica y biológica muestra que el complejo 99mTc(V)-nitruro(GLU-DTC)2 es un compuesto estable y altamente hidrofílico, aunque su unión a proteínas plasmáticas es mayor a la esperada, hecho que justificaría la alta actividad retenida en sangre y en hígado durante la evaluación biológica en ratones CD1 normales. Estos resultados indican que la marcación con 99mTc de este derivado de glucosa produce una alteración significativa de su comportamiento biológico.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The cultivation of genetically modified (GM) Bt maize (Zea mays L.) events MON810 and Bt11 is permitted in Uruguay. Local regulations specify that 10% of the crop should be a non-GM cultivar as refuge area for biodiversity, and the distance from other non-GM maize crops should be more than 250 m in order to avoid crosspollination. However, the degree of cross-fertilization between maize crops in Uruguay is unknown. The level of adventitious presence of GM material in non-GM crops is a relevant issue for organic farming, in situ conservation of genetic resources and seed production. In the research reported here, the occurrence and frequency of cross-fertilization between commercial GM and non-GM maize crops in Uruguay was assessed. The methodology comprised field sampling and detection using DAS-ELISA and PCR. Five field-pair cases where GM maize crops were grown near non-GM maize crops were identified. These cases had the potential to cross-fertilize considering the distance between crops and the similarity of the sowing dates. Adventitious presence of GM material in the offspring of non-GM crops was found in three of the five cases. Adventitious presence of event MON810 or Bt11 in non-GM maize, which were distinguished using specific primers, matched the events in the putative sources of transgenic pollen. Percentages of transgenic seedlings in the offspring of the non-GM crops were estimated as 0.56%, 0.83% and 0.13% for three sampling sites with distances of respectively 40, 100 and 330 m from the GM crops. This is a first indication that adventitious presence of transgenes in non-GM maize crops will occur in Uruguay if isolation by distance and/or time is not provided. These findings contribute to the evaluation of the applicability of the “regulated coexistence policy” in Uruguay.

Introduction: The use of [99mTc]glucarate has been reported as an infarct-avid agent with the potential for very early detection of myocardial infarction. [99mTc]Glucarate has also been postulated as an agent for non-invasive detection of tumors. The aim of our study was to develop a Glucarate kit and evaluate [99mTc]glucarate as a potential cancer imaging agent in female SCID mice bearing humanMDA-MB-435 breast tumors. Methods: Glucarate in a kit formulation was labeled with 99mTc and evaluated for radiolabelling efficiency and radiochemical purity. The Glucarate kit stability was assessed by monthly quality controls. The pharmacokinetics of [99mTc]glucarate were determined in female SCID mice bearing MDA-MB-435 human breast carcinoma tumors at 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 24 h. Nuclear imaging studies were performed with a microsingle photon emission tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography (CT) system at 2 h post injection, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was employed for tumor morphology analysis and metastatic deposit localization. Results: The Glucarate kits exhibited a stable shelf life of 6 months. [99mTc]Glucarate was obtained with radiochemical purity greater than 95%. Biodistribution studies demonstrated moderate tumor uptake coupled with high renal clearance. Tumor-to-muscle ratios were 4.85 and 5.14 at 1 and 4 h post injection. MRI analysis showed tumors with dense cellular growth and moderate central necrosis. [99mTc]Glucarate uptake in the primary MDA-MB-435 shoulder tumors and metastatic lesions were clearly visualized with micro-SPECT/CT imaging. Conclusions: Selective tumor uptake and rapid clearance from nontarget organs makes [99mTc]glucarate a potential agent for breast cancer imaging that awaits validation in a clinical trial.

Research efforts on the medicinal chemistry of vanadium have been mainly focused whether on improving biodistribution and tolerability of the vanadium insulin-enhancing core or on developing potential anti-tumor compounds. Despite the fact that the World Health Organization statistics show that parasitic diseases are among the most prevalent illnesses worldwide, work on vanadium compounds for the potential treatment of some of these diseases has only recently arisen. This review focuses on recent attempts to develop vanadium-based potential anti-parasitic agents, mainly active against the parasites causing American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease), leishmaniasis and amoebiasis. In addition, the search for new therapeutic uses of some previously known bioactive vanadium compounds is included

In the search for gallium bioactive compounds five Ga(III) complexes, [GaIII(L–H)2](NO3), with tridentate salicylaldehyde semicarbazone derivatives as ligands (L) have been synthesized and characterized in the solid state and in solution by different techniques. The crystal structure of [GaIII(L4–H)2](NO3)�2H2O, where L4 is 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde semicarbazone, was solved by X-ray diffraction methods. The gallium( III) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment, coordinated to two nearly planar and mutually perpendicular 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde semicarbazonato anions acting as tridentate ligands through their phenol and carbonyl oxygen atoms and their azomethine nitrogen atom. Their biological potential has been explored by evaluating their activity on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, causative agent of tuberculosis, and their cytotoxicity on tumor cell lines. Three different human tumor cell lines were selected that show different degrees of resistance to metallodrugs: ovarian A2780 (low resistance), breast MCF7 (medium resistance) and prostate PC3 (high resistance) cells. Although the complexes have not shown activity on M. tuberculosis, complexation with gallium has led to the enhancement of the cytotoxic potencies of the organic compounds. Those complexes that contain a bromide substituent at the phenolate ring have shown the highest cytotoxicities. In particular, [GaIII(L2–H)2](NO3), where L2 is 5-bromosalicylaldehyde semicarbazone,�has shown a remarkable cytotoxicity on A2780 tumor cell line with an IC50 value of the same order than cisplatin (IC50 Ga–L2 = 2.4 ± 0.3 lM; IC50 cisplatin = 2.0 ± 0.1 lM, 72 h incubation at 37 �C). Interestingly, this complex has also shown moderate cytotoxicity against MCF7 and PC3 cells (IC50 MCF7 = 30 ± 6; IC50 PC3 = 18 ± 3 lM). Therefore, this gallium compound could be considered a promising wide spectrum potential anti-tumor agent.

The UV-vis spectra of the hexanuclear chalcohalide rhenium(III) clusters of formula [Re6S8X6]4- (X- ) Cl-, Br-, I-) were investigated at the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) level employing B3LYP, PBE1PBE, and the double-hybrid B2PLYP functional in combination with the LANL2DZ basis set. We were able to reproduce the red shift experimentally observed when the halide changes from chloride to iodide. However, some discrepancies between experimental results and theory were found. First, we did not observe a remarkable dependence of the experimental ill-resolved bands on the solvent. Indeed, similar spectra were obtained taken CH2Cl2 or CH3CN as solvents into account. Second, all calculations explained the origin of the band peaked at the low-energy region in contraposition with the one experimentally assumed by R. Long et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1996, 118, 4603), and theoretically made available by Arratia-Pe´rez et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 1999, 110, 2529). These authors have proposed a ligand-to-cluster charge transfer (LCCT) for all title complexes. Our findings undoubtedly allow such origin to be discarded. While the HGGA functionals lead to a cluster-to-halide ligand charge transfer (CLCT), an intracluster charge transfer (ICCT) has been considered by employing B2PLYP. This contribution showed B2PLYP in the presence of the solvent to be the best performer in studying the UV-vis spectra of large complexes of rhenium(III) containing the Re-S bond. We strongly recommended the use of the double-hybrid B2PLYP in studying UV-vis spectrum of rhenium complexes of size making the computational cost affordable. We expect that our work stimulates new experimental and theoretical investigations of the title complexes to confirm our assignment

The electronic spectra of triple-stranded complexes of Ti(IV) with bis(benzene-o-dithiolato) ligands (H4-L1 = 1,2-bis(2,3-dimercaptobenzamido)ethane; H4-L2 = 1,2-bis(2,3-dimercaptobenzamido)benzene) were investigated at the TD-DFT level of theory employing B3LYP/LANL2DZ. The influence of the nature (aliphatic or aromatic) of the spacer bridging both {Ti(S2C6H3)3} units on the absorptive features of the dinuclear complexes was also studied. B3LYP/LANL2DZ leads to spectra accounting for four absorption bands. At the lowest-energy region, the most important transitions are due to ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), in which out-of-plane ligand-centered orbitals and titanium-based MOs are involved. In going to the blue-region, a third band was detected with excitations showing an important contribution from ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) and indeed, a combined LMCT+ LLCT character has been considered. This observation seems to arise from a decrease in the metallic character of the LUMOderivatives involved in the excitations. The origin of the absorption band at the highest-energy part of the spectrum is assigned to a LLCT. The influence of the nature of the spacer on the molar absorption coefficients (ε) for this band has been clearly observed. The complex bearing aliphatic spacer shows ε of about 5 E+4M−1 cm−1, while the one containing an aromatic spacer present a value of ε of about 2 E+5M−1 cm−1.

<p>Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) flour is able to form dough with unique rheological properties that allow bread making. It is well known that wheat protein content affects dough rheological properties, but there is not enough evidence about the role of other minor flour constituents. One such minor constituent is non-starch flour polysaccharides, which are mainly pentosans formed by a xylopyranosyl linear chain branched with arabinofuranosyl residues. Their spatial distribution and branching pattern can affect their relationship with gluten forming proteins and thus influence their functional properties, the dough rheological properties, and thereby the flour baking quality. In this study the content and structural characteristics of non-starch polysaccharides were investigated, as well as their influence on some dough physicochemical parameters. Five different wheat flours samples milled from Uruguayan wheat varieties with diverse rheological and breadmaking properties were used in this study. Water soluble flour polysaccharides were extracted and the amount of pentosans was determined by the orcinol–HCl method. The pentoses composition was determined before and after acidic hydrolysis of the water soluble polysaccharide fractions by GC. No free pentoses were detected in any of the assayed flour samples, so the pentoses composition found in the hydrolyzed samples was attributed to the non-starch water soluble polysaccharides.Water unextractable non-starch polysaccharides were determined by difference between the total and the soluble non-starch polysaccharides flour content. <br />An improved method for the quantification of water extractable and non-extractable non-starch<br />polysaccharides, using baker’s yeast, was developed. Using this method, total and soluble non-starch polysaccharides content could reliably be determined both in whole flour and in pentosans enriched fractions. Free monosaccharide content was in the range from 0.03% to 0.06% (w/w), while the arabinose/xylose (Ara/Xyl) ratios varied from 0.8 to 1.4 in soluble non-starch polysaccharides and from 0.7 to 0.9 in total non-starch polysaccharides. The different Ara/Xyl ratios found for water extractable and unextractable arabinoxylans clearly indicates different substitution degrees in the polymers. Analysis of the dough rheological parameters in relation to the water soluble and non-soluble non-starch polysaccharides and the Ara/Xyl ratios from different wheat varieties was performed. A clear relation between some of these parameters could be inferred, since a direct relationship between total unextractable (AXi) content and resistance of dough to extension (P), as well an inverse relationship between the same parameter<br />and dough extensibility (L) were observed. These results suggest that the flour non-starch polysaccharide content, as well the Ara/Xyl ratios may be used as additional parameters to estimate some of the wheat flours dough properties.</p>

Microcystins (MCs) are the most common cyanotoxins found worldwide in freshwater, brackish, and marine environments. The rapid and accurate analysis of MCs and nodularin (Nod-R) in fish tissue is important for determining occurrence, following trends, and monitoring exposure for risk assessment and other purposes. The aim of this study was to develop a streamlined and reliable sample preparation method for eight MCs (MC-RR, MCYR, MC-LR, MC-WR, MC-LA, MC-LY, MC-LW, and MCLF) and Nod-R in fish, and conduct a validation of the new method using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for analysis and compare the results with a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Different sample preparation methods were compared, and a simple extraction protocol with acidified acetonitrile/water (3:1) followed by hexane partitioning cleanup was found to be most effective. Thorough validation of the final method was conducted, and 90– 115% recoveries were achieved for all analytes except for MC-RR, which gave 130% average recovery (isotopically labeled internal standards were unavailable to correct for possible biases). The use of electrospray ionization in the negative mode gave few interferences and minimal matrix effects in the LC-MS/MS analysis overall. Precision was typically 10–20% RSD among multiple days in experiments, detection limits were <10 ng/g in the fish tissue (catfish, basa, and swai filets), and no false-positives or false-negatives occurred in blind analyses of many spiked samples. The ELISA was unable to distinguish between MCs but was found to correctly assess the presence or absence of MCs and Nod-R in the blind-fortified fish tissues. The capability of these approaches to measure covalently bound MCs was not assessed

A novel methanotroph, strain E10T, was isolated from a rice paddy field in Uruguay. Strain E10T grows on methane or methanol as its sole carbon and energy source. It is a Gram-negative, non-motile, non-pigmented, slightly curved rod showing type I intracytoplasmic membranes arranged in stacks. It is neutrophilic and mesophilic (optimum growth at 30-35 °C and with no growth above 37°C). The strain only possesses a particulate methane monooxygenase (pmoA). Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that it is most closely related to the moderately thermophilic strains Methylocaldum szegediense OR2T (91.6 % similarity) and Methylococcus capsulatus Bath (91.5 % similarity). Comparative sequence analysis of the pmoA genes also confirmed that strain E10T forms a new lineage among the genera Methylocaldum and Methylococcus (89 and 84% derived amino acid sequence identity to Methylococcus capsulatus Bath and Methylocaldum gracile VKM-14LT, respectively). The DNA G+C content is 63.1 mol% and the major cellular fatty acid is 16:0 (62.05%). Thus, it is proposed that strain E10T (= JCM 16910T=DSM 23452T) represents the type strain of a novel species within a new genus, Methylogaea oryzae gen. nov., sp. nov.

A summary of the resource.
With the aim to develop new potential 99mTc-radiopharmaceuticals for imaging hypoxia based on the formation of Tc-nitrido complexes, two novel dithiocarbamate containing metronidazole derivatives (L1 and L2) have been prepared and characterised. The synthesis of L1 and L2 was achieved in excellent yield and high purity. Labelling with 99mTc was successfully performed using a low ligand concentration (approximately 2–3 mg) and the desired products were obtained with high radiochemical purity (>90%). Lipophilicity, plasma protein binding, and biodistribution in normal- and tumour-bearing-CD1 mice studies were performed to asses the potentiality for nuclear medicine oncology. According to the physicochemical and biological behaviour both in healthy animals and in animals bearing solid tumours complex dtcTc1 could be considered as a starting point for the development of new radiopharmaceuticals for imaging hypoxia.

In the search for alternative chemotherapeutic strategies against leukemia, various 1-indanone thiosemicarbazones, as well as eight novel platinum(II) and palladium(II) complexes, with the formula [MCl2(HL)] and [M(HL)(L)]Cl, derived from two 1-indanone thiosemicarbazones were synthesized and tested for antiproliferative activity against the human leukemia U937 cell line. The crystal structure of [Pt(HL1)(L1)]Cl.2MeOH, where L1=1-indanone thiosemicarbazone, was solved by X-ray diffraction. Free thiosemicarbazone ligands showed no antiproliferative effect, but the corresponding platinum(II) and palladium( II) complexes inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. Platinum(II) complexes also displayed selective apoptotic activity in U937 cells but not in peripheral blood monocytes or the human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cell line used to screen for potential hepatotoxicity. Present findings show that, in U937 cells, 1-indanone thiosemicarbazones coordinated to palladium(II) were more cytotoxic than those complexed with platinum(II), although the latter were found to be more selective for leukemic cells suggesting that they are promising compounds with potential therapeutic application against hematological malignancies.
