1 Semiochemicals are powerful tools for the surveillance and suppression of forest insects. Although the literature on the chemical ecology of and use of semiochemicals to manage the Cerambycidae is growing, little is known about the chemical ecology of Cerambycidae fauna in Peru.<br />2 Trapping studies that screen known attractants in off-shore mitigation programs can provide valuable baseline knowledge to inform management of species introduced outside their native range.<br />3 Known Cerambycidae pheromones were screened for activity in a year-long field study in Peru to look for activity in the local Cerambycidae fauna.<br />4 The most frequently captured species were Megacyllene andesiana (Casey), Oreodera<br />bituberculata Bates, Aegomorphus longitarsis (Bates) and Discopus eques Bates.<br />5 The activity period of A. longitarsis, O. bituberculata and D. eques occurred in mid-September 2020 and for M. andesiana occurred in early October 2020.<br />6 Responses to anti-2,3-hexanediol, fuscumol and fuscumol acetate by M. andesiana, O. bituberculata and D. eques were observed.<br />7 We observed antagonism of the responses of M. andesiana, O. bituberculata and D. eques when anti-2,3-hexanediol, fuscumol and fuscumol acetate were tested in blends.

Serratia marcescens can be a plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) and an opportunistic human andplant pathogen. We have identified and characterized strains of related species of Serratia and evaluatedtheir biological control of damping-off of tomato seeds caused by Pythium cryptoirregulare. Serratia ure-ilytica, S. bockelmannii and S. nevei were identified by phylogenetic analysis of partial gyrB gene sequenceand average nucleotide identity (ANI). Tomato seeds inoculated with S. ureilytica ILBB 145 showed highergermination percentage and reduced damping-off in greenhouse experiment resembling a commercialoperation, and volatiles produced by this strain caused the nearly complete inhibition in vitro of P. cryp-toirregulare. Analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) showed that ILBB 145 produced dimethyldisulfide (DMDS), which can partially account for this inhibition. Serratia bockelmannii ILBB 162 perfor-mance against damping-off was intermediate and the inhibition of P. cryptoirregulare in vitro was lowerand explained by volatile and diffusible metabolites. Both strains augmented DMDS production in thepresence of P. cryptoirregulare, suggesting this compound may play a role in the context of interspecificcompetition. Serratia nevei ILBB 219 showed the lowest inhibition of P. cryptoirregulare in vitro, no DMDSproduction, and no biocontrol in planta. Draft genomes of the three strains were annotated and individ-ual genes and biosynthesis gene clusters were identified in relation with the observed phenotypes. Wereport S. ureilytica – a low risk species- with activity as a biological control agent and DMDS produced bythis bacterial species putatively involved in seed and seedling protection against P. cryptoirregulare.

<p>The objective of the present studywas to evaluate children's hedonic sensitivity to sugar reduction in three dairy products: vanilla milk desserts, chocolate-flavoured milk, and vanilla yoghurt. For each product, a regular sample and five samples with different reduction in added-sugar content were formulated. The regular sample contained the sugar content of commercial products available in the marketplace. The<br />reduction in added-sugar content ranged between 10.0 and 41.0%. A total of 126 children (8e13 years old) participated in the study. An A-not A test was used to evaluate children's hedonic sensitivity to sugar reduction. Sugar reductions up to 27% in chocolate flavoured milk and vanilla yoghurt, and up to 19% in vanilla milk desserts, did not cause significant changes in children's hedonic reaction. These results confirm that sugar-reduction strategies can be easily implemented in the dairy industry without significant risk of affecting sample appreciation and market share.</p>

<p>Pantoea ananatis is a gram-negative bacterium and the primary causal agent of center rot of onions in Georgia. Previous genomic studies identified two virulence gene clusters, HiVir and alt, associated with center rot. The HiVir gene cluster is required to induce necrosis on onion tissues via synthesis of pantaphos, (2-hydroxy[phosphonomethyl) maleate), a phosphonate phytotoxin. The alt gene cluster aids in tolerance<br />to thiosulfinates generated during onion tissue damage. Whole genome sequencing of other Pantoea species suggests that these gene clusters are present outside of P. ananatis. To assess the distribution of these gene clusters, two PCR primer sets were designed to detect the presence of HiVir and alt. Two hundred fifty-two strains of Pantoea spp. were phenotyped using the red onion scale necrosis (RSN) assay and were genotyped using PCR for the presence of these virulence genes. A diverse panel of strains from three distinct culture collections comprised of 24 Pantoea species, 41 isolation sources, and 23 countries, collected from 1946–2019, was tested. There is a<br />significant association between the alt PCR assay and Pantoea strains recovered from symptomatic onion (P < 0.001). There is also a significant association of a positive HiVir PCR and RSN assay among P. ananatis strains but not among Pantoea spp.,<br />congeners. This may indicate a divergent HiVir cluster or different pathogenicity and virulence mechanisms. Last, we describe natural alt positive [RSN C /HiVir C /alt C ]<br />P. ananatis strains, which cause extensive bulb necrosis in a neck-to-bulb infection assay compared to alt negative [RSN C /HiVir C /alt</p>

<p>The epitaxial graphene layer (EG) grown on silicon carbide (SiC) is severely affected by the presence of the underlying graphene buffer layer (BL). However, little information is available on the alteration of the magnetic and electronic properties of the top layer when the BL presents structural defects. Herein, by<br />means of first-principle density functional calculations, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of the SiC–BL–EG system, with a single vacancy, divacancy or a Stone–Wales defective buffer layer. Our results indicate that new highly stable magnetic states are observed in the SiC–BL–EG nondefective and defective systems, as compared to the SiC–BL models. In addition, the energy differences among the degenerate magnetic states originally found in the SiC-defective systems are further reduced upon inclusion of the EG layer.<br />Interestingly, for the single-vacancy system, a p-type doping is noticed in the spin down channel of the M = 4 lB configuration. This is in sharp contrast with the n-type doping generally measured for EG. Moreover, charge neutrality was observed in two cases namely, the half-semimetal ferromagnetic configurations of the non-defective and the single-vacancy systems. This result may open new avenues to control the electronic doping of the epitaxial graphene layer via defect engineering.</p>

<p>The aim of this study was to assess the risk of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from yerba mate infusions in Uruguay using the margin of exposure approach (MOE) and a probabilistic method (Monte Carlo simulation). Servings/day, portion size, weekly frequency of mate consumption and body weight were the factors considered. The amount in infusions of benz[a]pyrene (B[a]P), PAH2 (sum of chrysene and B[a]P), and PAH4 (sum of benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benz[b]fluoranthene and B[a]P) were used as markers of PAH exposure. Total content of PAH in infusions had large inter-brand variability (48–54 %) with significant differences among brands. PAH content in infusions prepared as habitually consumed was about 40 % of total content. The probability of occurrence of MOE < 10,000 varied according to the infusion preparation and the marker of exposure used, being higher for infusions prepared for total content and when B[a]P was used as marker of exposure. When the average B[a]P amount in infusion as habitually consumed was used in the simulation model, the probability of MOE < 10,000 was 9 %. The main factors contributing to B[a]P MOE variance were B[a]P amount (28.4 %), servings/day (17.3 %), and portion size (9.6 %). Heavy drinkers of yerba mate with high B[a]P content are those at risk to PAH exposure from mate infusions.</p>

<p>Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is an economically important food and medicinal plant that grows in tropical and subtropical regions consumed worldwide. Turmeric is a difficult matrix for residue/contaminant analysis due to the high content of potentially interfering polyphenols (curcuminoids) and essential oils with physicochemical properties similar to target analytes. To solve this problem, a simple and straightforward sample preparation protocol based on ethyl acetate extraction and dispersive solid phase clean-up, followed by gas and liquid<br />chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry analysis, was optimized and validated, after selecting a<br />representative blank material using gas chromatography coupled to ion mobility spectrometry and multivariate<br />data analysis. <p>A new crystal structure for complex [Cu2Cl2(bipy)2(μ-Cl)(μ-CH3O)] was obtained. X-ray diffraction data showed dinuclear complexes with metal-ions seated on two symmetrically related pentacoordinated environment, in which, a trigonal bipyramidal<br />(TBPY-5) coordination polyhedra was observed. While chloride was detected as monodentate and as a bridging-ligand,<br />the diimine unit and a bridging oxygen from methoxide occupied the remaining positions. The crystal structure accounted for dinuclear complexes interacting to each other via H-bonds involving C–H groups of bipy and monodentate chloride anions of an adjacent molecule. Theoretical studies were conducted by DFT methods employing B3LYP in combination with 6-31G(d). Larger basis sets (6-311G(d) and cc-pVDZ) were taken into account to assess the performance of B3LYP/6-31G(d) in dealing with equilibrium geometry and population analysis. This standard methodology showed to be a reasonable performer to reproduce geometric parameters keeping the computational cost very low.</p>

Las mandarinas presentan una gran diversidad en características sensoriales y de calidad de fruta, así como una cosecha extendida. El mejoramiento genético de cítricos se focaliza en la búsqueda de nichos de cosecha para la obtención de mayores precios, así como en aspectos nutricionales y sensoriales, entre otras caracterís-ticas. En este contexto, la caracterización sensorial de nuevos híbridos y la identificación de las características sensoriales claves que influyen en la aceptabilidad de los consumidores proveen de una valiosa información para el mejoramiento y las estrategias de marketing. Estudios previos mostraron que las características senso-riales, especialmente el sabor, son claves en la aceptación de las mandarinas por los consumidores. Se llevaron a cabo dos estudios durante la estación de cosecha de mandarinas (media y tardía) aplicando la metodología «marque todo lo que corresponda» (CATA) y con la participación de al menos 100 consumidores. La aceptabi-lidad de los cultivares que fueron más aceptados se situó entre 6,5 y 7,7 en una escala hedónica de 9 puntos, evidenciando una reacción hedónica positiva. Los nuevos híbridos presentaron puntajes de aceptabilidad simi-lares o superiores a los cultivares de referencia Tango, Gold Nugget, Murcott y Ortanique. A su vez, los resul-tados mostraron que el color naranja, la forma regular, la piel lisa, el dulzor, la jugosidad, el sabor intenso y el sabor típico a mandarina son características claves que determinan la aceptabilidad de las mandarinas, y que la apariencia externa no es un buen predictor del sabor. Los híbridos F3P8, F5P8 y F2P3 fueron descritos por los consumidores con términos sensoriales positivos, recibiendo valores de aceptabilidad similares o mayores que los cultivares de referencia como tango, reafirmando la importancia de la incorporación de estudios senso-riales en el contexto del mejoramiento genético

<p>Recently, the increase in microbreweries and the consequent production of craft beers have reached exponential growth. The interest in non-conventional yeasts for innovation and a unique selling feature in beer fermentation is increasing. This work studied the autochthonous Saccharomyces and non Saccharomyces yeasts, isolated from various food sources, with the ability to modify and improve the fermentative and aromatic profiles during alcoholic fermentation. The ability to ferment maltose and produce desirable aroma compounds were considered as the key characters for the screening selection. A synthetic beer wort was developed for this purpose, to simulate beer wort composition.</p>
<p>A total of forty-seven yeast strains belonging to different genera were analysed according to their fermentation profile, volatile compounds production and sensory analysis. Three native strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Zygoascus meyerae and Pichia anomala were selected to evaluate their aromatic profile in single and mixed fermentations. The strains produced 4-vinylguaiacol, β-phenylethyl alcohol, and isoamyl alcohol at levels significantly above the sensory threshold, making them interesting for wheat and blond craft beer styles. The native Hanseniaspora vineae was also included in a co-fermentation treatment, resulting in a promising yeast to produce fruity beers.</p>

<p>Cyanobacterial toxic blooms are aworldwide problem. The Río de la Plata (RdlP) basinmakes up about one fourth of South America areal surface, second only to the Amazonian. Intensive agro-industrial land use and the construction of dams have led to generalized eutrophication ofmain tributaries and increased the intensity and duration of cyanobacteria blooms. Herewe analyse the evolution of an exceptional bloomat the lowRdlP basin and Atlantic coast during the summer of 2019. A large array of biological, genetic,meteorological, oceanographic and<br />satellite data is combined to discuss the driving mechanisms. The bloomcovered thewhole stripe of the RdlP estuary and the Uruguayan Atlantic coasts (around 500 km) for approximately 4 months. It was caused by the Microcystis aeruginosa complex (MAC), which produces hepatotoxins (microcystin). Extreme precipitation in the upstreamregions of Uruguay and Negro rivers' basins caused highwater flows and discharges. The evolution of meteorological and oceanographic conditions as well as the similarity of organisms' traits in the affected area<br />suggest that the bloom originated in eutrophic reservoirs at the lower RdlP basin, Salto Grande in the Uruguay river, and Negro river reservoirs. High temperatures and weak Eastern winds prompted the rapid dispersion of the bloom over the freshwater plume along the RdlP northern and Atlantic coasts. The long-distance rapid drift allowed active MAC organisms to inoculate freshwater bodies from the Atlantic basin, impacting environments relevant for biodiversity conservation. Climate projections for the RdlP basin suggest an increase in precipitation and river water flux, which, in conjunction with agriculture intensification and dams' construction, might turn this extraordinary event into an ordinary situation.</p>

<p>The detection of small molecules in living cells using genetically encoded FRET sensors has revolutionized our understanding of signaling pathways at the sub-cellular level. However,<br />engineering fluorescent proteins and specific binding domains to create new sensors remains challenging because of the difficulties associated with the large size of the polypeptides involved, and their intrinsically huge conformational variability. Indeed, FRET sensors’ design still relies on vague structural notions, and trial and error combinations of linkers and protein modules. We recently designed a FRET sensor for<br />the second messenger cAMP named CUTie (Cyclic nucleotide Universal Tag for imaging experiments), which granted sub-micrometer resolution in living cells. Here we apply a combination of sequence/structure analysis to produce a new-generation FRET sensor for the second messenger cGMP based on Protein kinase G I (PKGI), which we named CUTie2. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations achieved an exhaustive<br />sampling of the relevant spatio-temporal coordinates providing a quasi-quantitative prediction of the FRET efficiency, as confirmed by in vitro experiments. Moreover, biochemical characterization showed that the cGMP binding module maintains virtually the same affinity and selectivity for its ligand thant the full-length protein. The computational approach proposed here is easily generalizable to other allosteric protein modules, providing a cost effective-strategy for the custom design of FRET sensors.</p>

<p>Earthworms have proved to contribute to plant health indirectly, by improvement of soil physical and chemical properties, as well as directly, through suppression of plant pathogens. Fusarium Head Blight, caused primarily by Fusarium graminearum, is one of the most important cereal diseases, with severe detrimental effects on yield and grain quality worldwide, and significant effect on grain safety due to the accumulation of mycotoxins produced by the fungus. Earthworms could reduce the residue-borne inoculum density of F. graminearum through different mechanisms, including direct competition by residue consumption, growth inhibition caused by the earthworm coelomic fluid, mechanical disruption of fungal hyphae, and burying crop residue which reduce the<br />chances for the fungus to release spores for head infection. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of anecic and epigeic earthworms on wheat straw and on F. graminearum inoculum. For this, PVC cylinders (microcosms 14.5 cm diameter, 30 cm height) were filled with moist soil mix, wheat straw was evenly distributed on the soil surface (inoculated with Fusarium, soil microorganisms or sterile) and three earthworm species (Aporrectodea longa, Lumbricus rubellus or Lumbricus terrestris) were tested. Since the response of earthworms may<br />change according to conditions of soil moisture and food availability, two different experiments were arranged. The first Experiment represented a sub-optimal situation for earthworms regarding soil moisture and feeding conditions, which was obtained by scarce watering of the microcosms with a consequent decrease in soil water content during incubation, and by not adding cow manure as supplementary food source. In the second experiment, soil was enriched with cow manure as feed for the earthworms and soil moisture was maintained<br />above 25%. Results from qPCR analysis revealed that F. graminearum inoculum on straw was reduced to undetectable<br />amounts by L. rubellus and A. longa when the feeding conditions were limited, while no significant differences compared with the control without earthworms were found when earthworms had high food availability (α = 0.05). Straw coverage on soil surface was reduced by L. rubellus (epigeic) in both experiments (p< 0.0001), while A. longa (anecic) just did so under optimal conditions. L. terrestris (anecic), only tested under optimal conditions, reduced soil cover significantly more than the other two species (p < 0.0001). Negative effect<br />of this fungus was not observed on the studied earthworms. Both anecic and epigeic earthworms tested showed potential to contribute to biological control of F. graminearum in wheat straw. This control may occur by reducing straw on surface, reducing the pathogen inoculum on straw, or both, depending on the environmental conditions and their response according to their ecological group and species. The possibilities to optimize earthworm capacity for biological control of fungal diseases in practical agriculture, under changing weather and organic matter supply conditions, are discussed.</p>

<p>As nutritional recommendations change, new marketing strategies are expected to appear on food labels to convey the idea that products are healthful and aligned with the recommendations. In this context, the objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of references to ‘home-made’, images of natural foods and nutritional warnings on consumers’ healthfulness perception and purchase intention of labels of ultra-processed products with excessive content of nutrients associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The study was conducted with 790 Uruguayan Facebook users (65% female, 18–89 years old), diverse in terms of educational and<br />socio-economic levels. A choice experiment involving labels of four categories of ultra-processed products (burgers, cookies, instant soup and instant vanilla milk custard) was implemented. For each product category, eight sets of two labels differing in the presence of references to home-made, images of natural foods and nutritional warnings were designed. Half of the participants were asked to indicate the healthier product,<br />whereas the other half were asked to indicate the product they would purchase. Data were analyzed using mixed logit models. The inclusion of references to home-made and images of natural foods on the labels had a positive effect on purchase intention and tended to create the belief that products were healthful. Nutritional warnings decreased healthfulness perception and discouraged participants’ choice. In three of the product categories images of natural foods created a health halo that reduced the effect of nutritional warnings on product choice. Results from the present work suggest the need to develop stricter labelling regulations for ultra-processed<br />products with high content of nutrients associated with NCDs.</p>

<p>Hanseniaspora vineae is a non-Saccharomyces yeast that has a powerful impact on the sensory profile of wines. Its effect on the aromatic profile of non-aromatic grape varieties, such as Albillo Mayor (Vitis vinifera, L.), during vinification is a useful biotechnology to improve sensory complexity. Fermentation in steel barrels using Hanseniaspora vineae and sequential inoculation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been used to study the formation of terpenes and cell lysis in the production of Albillo white wines. The GC-MS analysis profile shows a significant effect of H. vineae fermentation on the contents of terpenes (3), mainly in linalool (>3), -citronellol (>4), geraniol (>2) and-terpineol (2). The contents of several polyoxygenated terpenes and some volatile phenols with a spicy aroma were increased during fermentation. In summary, Hanseniaspora vineae releases a large number of cell wall polysaccharides during fermentation that affect wine palatability and structure.<br />Hanseniaspora vineae is a powerful bio-tool to enhance the fruitiness, floral notes and freshness in non-aromatic white varieties.</p>

<p>It is now well established that β-glucosidases (BGLs) from non-Saccharomyces yeasts are key enzymes that hydrolyze grape-derived aroma precursors enhancing the flavour of wines. This work reports on the specificity for wine glycosides and the impact on wine aroma, of three native yeast β-glucosidases. Volatile compounds were analyzed by gas-chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) and wine aroma was studied by sensory analysis. Issatchenkia terricola β-glucosidase stood out from the other β-glucosidases studied. The I. terricola BGL<br />showed remarkable specificity for norisoprenoid aglycones such as: 3-oxo-7, 8-dihydro-alpha-ionol, 3-oxo- α-ionol, vomifoliol. This different specificity was perceived in the sensory tests. The judges described pleasant fruity, sweet, honey and raisin notes in both Tannat and Muscat wines treated with I. terricola BGL. These results are particularly remarkable for Tannat wines, since there are few reports concerning the application of β-glucosidases to enhance its aroma of Tannat, and none with BGLs from native yeasts.</p>

<p>Nanomedicine is a highly demanded discipline. Liposomes have seen an increased attention due to their physicochemical properties that allow them to act as nanocarriers of drugs and also of radioisotopes that can be used to diagnose and treat cancer. In order to obtain a novel permeability cancer imaging agent based on 99mTc-labeled liposomes, we describe microwave-assisted synthesis of stearyl 6 (benzylidenehydrazinyl) nicotinamide lipid, which was included in two formulations: nanometric hydrazinonicotinic acid (HYNIC) liposome and its PEGylated coated analogue, HYNIC-PEG liposome. Radiolabeling with 99mTc via stearyl 6-(benzylidenehydrazinyl) nicotinamide was found to<br />be easy, reproducible, and stable, revealing high radiochemical purity (94 ± 1.7%) for both liposomal formulations. Biodistribution at 4 h and 24 h and scintigraphic images at 4 h were performed in normal and melanoma-bearing C57BL/6 mice. Biodistribution studies at 4 h showed tumor uptake of 99mTc-HYNIC liposome and 99mTc-HYNIC-PEG liposome (1.1 ±<br />0.6 and 2.5 ± 0.4, respectively) and also at 24 h p.i. (1.8 ± 0.5 and 3.0 ± 1.1, respectively). Scintigraphic images showed appreciable tumor uptake in melanoma tumor–bearing mice<br />with both liposomal formulations. Our results show that 99mTc stearyl 6-(benzylidenehydrazinyl) nicotinamide liposomes can be used as diagnostic noninvasive in vivo tumor-targeting agents capable of evaluating tumor permeability and development who can be used in personalized chemotherapy planning.</p>

<p>Clay honeycomb monoliths (MC) washcoated by pillared clay (PILC) obtained from the same starting material were used as support of manganese catalysts for the complete oxidation of acetone. Using the same clay for extrusion and pillaring processes intended to optimize the catalyst preparation respect to previous similar studies through raw materials saving, with subsequent local clay valorization, and washcoat adherence enhancement due to higher chemical affinity with the monolith substrate. To evaluate the influence of the PILC presence on the<br />catalytic behaviour, two other non-coated monolith catalysts were prepared as references, having different loads of manganese as function of the impregnation cycles number applied, either one (Mn/MC) or two (Mn2/MC). All the catalysts were characterized by TGA, XRD, XRF, N2 physisorption and SEM. The catalytic tests used acetone as a VOC model molecule. The results indicated that the PILC coating (Mn/PILC/MC) led to a higher percentage of Mn2O3 (7 wt%) compared to Mn/MC (1 wt%). Moreover, the PILC-washcoated sample exhibited better performance in the acetone oxidation than Mn2/MC regardless this sample had higher Mn2O3 loading (11 wt%). This effect was related to the active phase crystal characteristics as well as to the textural properties induced by<br />the PILC washcoating.</p>

<p>Chronic metabolic diseases, like obesity, type II diabetes and atherosclerosis often involve a low-grade and sterile systemic inflammatory state, in which activation of the pro-inflammatory transcription factor NF-kB and the NLRP3 inflammasome play a major role. It is well established that genetic inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome ameliorates acute and chronic inflammation. Indeed, accumulating experimental evidences in murine models and also in humans suggest that inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome might be a suitable approach to tackle the deleterious effects of chronic metabolic diseases. In this work, we explored our previously synthesized nitroalkene-Trolox™ derivative named NATx0, as a non-conventional anti-inflammatory strategy to treat chronic inflammatory diseases, such as obesity-induced glucose intolerance. We found that NATx0 inhibited NF-kB nuclear translocation and pro-inflammatory gene expression in macrophages in vitro. In addition, treatment with NATx0 prevented NLRP3 inflammasome activation after LPS/ATP stimulation in macrophages in vitro. When tested acutely in vivo, NATx0 inhibited neutrophil recruitment in zebrafish larvae, and also diminished IL- 1β production after LPS challenge in mice. Finally, when NATx0 was administered chronically to diet-induced obese mice, it decreased muscle tissue inflammation and glucose intolerance, leading to improved glucose homeostasis. In conclusion, we propose that this novel nitroalkene-Trolox derivative is a suitable tool to tackle acute and chronic inflammation in vitro and in vivo mainly due to inhibition of NF-kB/NLRP3 activation.</p>

<p>Background: Microbes are present in almost every environment on Earth, even in those with extreme environmental conditions such as Antarctica, where rocks may represent the main refuge for life. Lithobiontic communities are composed of microorganisms capable of colonizing rocks and, as it is a not so well studied bacterial community, they may represent a very interesting source of diversity and functional traits with potential for biotechnological applications. In this work we analyzed the ability of Antarctic lithobiontic bacterium to synthesize cadmium sulfde quantum dots (CdS QDs) and their potential application in solar cells.<br />Results: A basaltic andesite rock sample was collected from Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica, and<br />processed in order to isolate lithobiontic bacterial strains. Out of the 11 selected isolates, strain UYP1, identifed as Pedobacter, was chosen for further characterization and analysis due to its high cadmium tolerance. A protocol for the biosynthesis of CdS QDs was developed and optimized for this strain. After 20 and 80 min of synthesis, yellow-green and orange-red fuorescent emissions were observed under UV light, respectively. QDs were characterized through spectroscopic techniques, dynamic light scattering analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Nanostructures of 3.07 nm, composed of 51.1% cadmium and 48.9% sulfde were obtained and further used as photosensitizer material in solar cells. These solar cells were able to conduct electrons and displayed an open circuit voltage of 162 mV, a short circuit current density of 0.0110 mA cm−2, and had an efciency of conversion up to 0.0016%, which is comparable with data previously reported for solar cells sensitized with biologically produced quantum dots.</p>
<p>Conclusions: We report a cheap, rapid and eco-friendly protocol for the production of CdS QDs by an Antarctic lithobiontic bacterium, Pedobacter, a genus that was not previously reported as a quantum dot producer. The application of the biosynthesized QDs as sensitizer material in solar cells was validated.</p>

<p>A new synthetic route for the quorum sensing signal Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) is described and used for the preparation of [4-13C]-AI-2 starting from [1-13C]-bromoacetic acid. The key step in this process was the enantioselective reduction of an intermediate ketone. This synthesis provides, selectively, both enantiomers of the labelled or unlabelled parent compound, (R) or (S)-4,5-dihydroxypentane-2,3-dione (DPD) and was used for an improved synthesis of [1-13C]-AI-2.</p>

<p>En este capítulo presentaremos de manera general aplicaciones<br />que la nanotecnología puede ofrecer, tanto desde el punto de vista de procesos como también de los diversos productos basados en esta nueva tecnología que actualmente se comercializan. Posteriormente discutiremos con mayor profundidad las oportunidades que ofrece el uso de la energía<br />solar, en particular las ventajas del uso de la nanotecnología. De esta forma mostraremos cómo esta nueva revolución tecnológica permite ir más allá de lo que se había pensado: generar nuevos productos, presentar variantes en<br />productos ya existentes, generar nuevos procesos, hacer viables procesos que antes no lo eran, y todo esto cuidando el ambiente.<br />La nanotecnología (NT) consiste en la creación de materiales<br />funcionales, dispositivos y sistemas a través de la manipulación de la materia a escala nanométrica. Un nanomaterial para ser catalogado como tal debe poseer en al menos una de sus dimensiones una longitud inferior a los 100 nanómetros (nm). Pero la nanotecnología también incluye la explotación de<br />las propiedades y los fenómenos ocurrentes a esa escala (Los Alamos National Laboratory, s/f), ya que son notoriamente diferentes a los esperados para los materiales en su forma convencional.</p>
