The complexes {ReOCl2[(py)2C(O)(OR)]}, (R = CH2CH3 (1), CH2CH2CH3 (2)) were obtained from the metalassisted alcoholysis reaction of di-2-pyridylketone. Their crystal structures were determined by singlecrystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of 1 and 2 consist of neutral mononuclear molecules containing the [ReO]3+ core. In both compounds the Re(V) central ion is also bonded to an oxygen and both nitrogens from the organic ligand and two chlorides in a distorted octahedral environment. Cyclic voltammograms in CH3CN solutions showed two main redox responses, both of them involving one electron transfer. Comparative theoretical studies on equilibrium geometries and electronic properties were conducted in the framework of the density functional theory (DFT).

A rapid and efficient methodology to prepare 2,4'-bi-1,3-azoles as scaffolds for biologically active marine natural products is described. Hantzsch reaction and oxidative cyclodehydration of β-hydroxyamides or thioamides were used to construct the azole rings. The obtained biheterocycles displayed no citotoxicity on HCT-15 cell line.

The extensive use of imazalil (IMZ) in Uruguayan citrus packinghouses to control Penicillium spp. favored the selection and proliferation of resistant isolates. With the aim of detecting Penicillium digitatum biotypes that are not controlled by commercial doses of IMZ, the IMZ concentration within amended potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates was adjusted to 1.0mgL−1 IMZ. This concentration allowed the detection of resistant isolates that were not controlled by commercial applications of 3.0 g L−1 IMZ. These isolates were able to grow in fruit with IMZ residues of 0.92 and 3.08mgkg−1. Therefore, environmental monitoring of facilities where commercial dip applications containing 3.0 g L−1 IMZ are employed, should be done with 1.0mgL−1 of IMZ in Petri dishes. We can conclude that use of IMZ in postharvest applications of 3.0 g L−1 remains effective to control wild Uruguayan P. digitatum isolates but not for resistant ones. A survey of 26 P. digitatum isolates collected in Uruguay indicated IMZ resistant isolates occurred in packinghouses and not in citrus groves.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
One hundred and fifty-four yeast strains were isolated from grapes and musts of Uruguayan vineyards and wineries. Only thirty strains showed b-glucosidase activity in Esculin Glycerol Agar (EGA) solid medium. Twenty-one were non-Saccharomyces and nine were Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. The objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of Esculin Glycerol Agar (EGA) solid medium for screening b-glucosidase activity in native yeasts strains. Halo sizes measured in the EGA solid medium were correlated to the Glycosyl-Glucose (GG) indexes measured after fermentation of grape musts with each strain. The two S. cerevisiae strains with the best performance were selected for further fermentations on a Muscat Miel grape must, rich in bound monoterpenes. The levels of free linalool, hodiol I and geraniol increased significantly as compared to fermentation with a commercial wine yeast strain. These results show the suitability of this simple and economic medium to identify S. cerevisiae glucosidase producers with a potential impact on real winemaking conditions. On the other hand, great variability was found for the non-Saccharomyces strains, and this would demand further studies for each species. In conclusion, the use of EGA solid medium shows that the screening method is suitable for exploring the glucosidase activity of native strains of S. cerevisiae and shows good correlation with its real

The identification of transformation products (TPs) of pharmaceuticals in the environment is essentially a challenging task due to the lack of standards and the instrumental capabilities required to detect compounds (sometimes unknowns) that are produced under environmental conditions. In this work, we report the use of liquid chromatography/ electrospray quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC/QTOF-MS/MS) as a tool for the identification of amoxicillin (AMX) and its main TPs in wastewater and river water samples. Laboratory degradation experiments of AMX were performed in both alkaline and acidic media in order to confirm that the expected transformation pathway in the aquatic media is through the b-lactam ring cleavage. A thorough study was carried out with both standards and real samples (wastewater and river water samples). Four compounds were identified as main TPs: both amoxicillin diketopiperacine-2’,5’ and amoxilloic acid diastereomers. Amoxilloic acid stereoisomers are reported for the first time in environmental matrices. The transformation product (5R)-amoxicillin diketopiperacine- 2’,5’ was frequently detected in river waters. Besides, another AMX transformation product formed during analysis was also structurally elucidated for the first time (amoxicilloic acid methyl ester) via accurate mass measurements. Collected data show that although AMX is not present as such in environmental samples, different TPs occur. This study represent a valuable indicator of the potential of LC/QTOF-MS/MS for the identification and structural elucidation of TPs in the environment using accurate MS/MS experiments, enabling thus the recognition of the environmental transformation pathway

A new analytical method has been developed and successfully evaluated in routine application for the quantitative analysis of a selected group of organophosphate pesticides (coumaphos, chlorpyrifos and ethion) which can be found at trace levels in propolis tinctures (ethanolic propolis extracts); a valuable commodity used as raw material in the food and pharmaceutical industries for which there have been few attempts for pesticide residue analysis reported in the literature. The proposed methodology is based on matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) using aluminum sulfate anh. a novel dispersant material and subsequent column chromatography clean-up in silica gel prior to gas chromatography (GC) with both flame photometric detector (FPD) and mass spectrometry (MS) detection used for the routine quantification and identification of the residues, respectively. The limits of detection, for coumaphos, chlorpyrifos and ethion were below 26.0 �g/kg in FPD and 1.43 �g/kg for MS detection. Mean recoveries were in the range of 85–123% with RSD values below 13%, which suggests that the proposed method is fit for the purpose of analyzing pesticides in propolis tinctures containing high concentration of polyphenolics. The method has been successfully applied in our laboratory for the last 2 year in the analysis of real propolis tinctures samples.

In this competitive world, a package has only a few seconds to make an impact and<br />catch the consumer’s eye. In that time, a successful label should communicate its<br />message and convince the shopper. Considering the importance of transmitting an<br />adequate, and in some occasions, the “perfect” message, it is crucial to understand<br />how consumers perceive and interpret the labels froma semiotic perspective, which<br />has not been considered in depth. In this context, the objective of the present study<br />was to gather information on how consumers of different age groups read the profiles<br />of symbolic labels and what they construe. A word association task was performed<br />with 101 participants (50 aged below 35 years old, 51 aged 60 and over).<br />Participantswere asked towrite down all that came to their minds when they sawfive<br />simple images of yogurt labels, which were constructed by combining a variety of<br />signs. All the elicited terms were grouped into 54 categories and then into nine<br />general dimensions. Though some main messages were conveyed successfully, relevant<br />differences were found in perceptions and interpretations of the two age<br />cohorts. Youngsters made more references to the specific attributes of the expected<br />product, whereas the elders assignedmore global and hedonic meanings.

Knowledge of how older users perceive products and how this perception affects acceptance is important since they are a consumer sector with real growth potential. Within this context, the aim of the present study was to analyze how two age cohorts of users perceive products of different familiarity grade (mobile phones and watches), using check-all-that-apply (CATA) questions and preference mapping, techniques not commonly used in the industrial design field. Two studies were carried out in which young and older users assessed a series of product images by answering a CATA question and rating their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale. Results demonstrated how certain terms apply only to a specific age group, how these correlated to particular design features and how these data constructed different preference patterns. Furthermore, the maps also revealed perception and preference differences not only among age groups, but also within age groups.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The crystal and molecular structure of the [VO(DLmeth)( NH2O)2]·H2O complex has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods (monoclinic, P21/c with a = 5.8138(2), b = 27.3496(8), c = 7.5663(2) A° , β = 103.059(3)◦, and Z = 4). The vanadium(V) cation is in a pentagonal bipyramidal environment axially coordinated to the oxo group and equatorially to two hydroxylamido groups in a side-on fashion. The fifth equatorial binding site and the other apical position are occupied by an N and an O atom, respectively, from the methioninate anion acting as a bidentate ligand.

determinación de zinc en leche en polvo y fórmulas infantiles. La determinación se basa en la reacción de Zn(II) con zincón a pH 9 en presencia de citrato de sodio para enmascarar interferentes de la matriz con detección espectrofotométrica a 612 nm. El sistema fue optimizado mediante experimentos multivariantes. El sistema validado presentó un rango lineal de 0.4 a 10 mg L-1, la precisión del método fue mejor que 5% (sr,%; n=10). El límite de detección fue 0.13 mg L-1. Los resultados obtenidos utilizando el método propuesto y el de referencia fueron estadísticamente equivalentes. La frecuencia de muestreo fue de 75 muestras/hora y el consumo de muestra y reactivo 0.24 mL por determinación. El método propuesto resultó veraz, simple, rápido y está de acuerdo a los principios de la química verde, generando apenas 0.24 mL de residuos químicos

<p>A fast and efficient automated method using a sequential injection analysis (SIA) system, based on the Griess, reaction was<br />developed for the determination of nitrate and nitrite in infant formulas and milk powder. The system enables to mix a measured<br />amount of sample (previously constituted in the liquid form and deproteinized) with the chromogenic reagent to produce a<br />colored substance whose absorbance was recorded. For nitrate determination, an on-line prereduction step was added by passing<br />the sample through a Cd minicolumn. The system was controlled from a PC by means of a user-friendly program. Figures of merit<br />include linearity (r2 > 0.999 for both analytes), limits of detection (0.32mg kg−1 NO3-N, and 0.05 mg kg−1 NO2-N), and precision<br />(sr%) 0.8–3.0. Results were statistically in good agreement with those obtained with the reference ISO-IDF method. The sampling<br />frequency was 30 hour−1 (nitrate) and 80 hour−1 (nitrite) when performed separately.</p>

A series of 18 novel 2-hydrazolyl-4-thiazolidinones- 5-carboxylic acids, amides and 5,6-a,b-unsaturated esters were synthesized, and their in vitro activity on cruzipain and T. cruzi epimastigotes was determined. Some agents show activity at 37 lM concentration in the enzyme assay. Computational tools and docking were used to correlate the biological response with the physicochemical parameters of the compounds and their cruzipain inhibitory effects.

This study describes the microbial community richness, -dynamics, and -organization of four full-scale anaerobic digesters during a time-course study of 45 days. The microbial community was analyzed using a Bacteria- and Archaea-targeting 16S rRNA gene-based Terminal-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism approach. Clustering analysis separated meso- and thermophilic reactors for both archaeal and bacterial communities. Regardless of the operating temperature, each installation possessed a distinct community profile. For both microbial domains, about 8 dominant terminal-restriction fragments could be observed, with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 14. The bacterial community organization (a coefficient which describes the specific degree of evenness) showed a factor 2 more variation in the mesophilic reactors, compared with the thermophilic ones. The archaeal community structure of the mesophilic UASB reactor was found to be more stable. The community composition was highly dynamic for Bacteria and Archaea, with a rate of change between 20–50% per 15 days. This study illustrated that microbial communities in full-scale anaerobic digesters are unique to the installation and that community properties are dynamic. Converging complex microbial processes such as anaerobic digestion which rely on a multitude of microbial teams apparently can be highly dynamic.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Lemon verbena (Aloysia citriodora Palau) is indigenous to South America and was introduced into Europe. It is cultivated mainly due to the lemon-like aroma emitted from its leaves, which are utilized for the preparation of herbal tea reputed to have antispasmodic, antipyretic, sedative and digestive properties. In this work we introduce the enantiomeric distribution of sabinene and limonene by bidimensional gas chromatography (chiral GC-GC) as a genuine quantitative parameter in order to improve the knowledge so far available on A. citriodora oil. Multivariate analysis afforded information on the similarities and differences of wild and cultivated A. citriodora populations during different seasons in the same environmental conditions. The results indicated that it was possible to discard the environmental and seasonal effect on the chemical composition of A. citriodora for wild and cultivated materials belonging to the same genetic origin.

A summary of the resource.
Bulnesia sarmientoi Lorentz ex Griseb volatile oil was characterized by GC×GC-TOF-MS analysis. Major components were guaiol and bulnesol, followed by hanamyol. The enhanced sensitivity and superior resolution of GC×GC resulted in the identification of thus-far unreported oil constituents as �-guaiene, guaioxide, elemol, germacrene-B, eudesm-5-en-11-ol, �-eudesmol, �-eudesmol and (−)-hanamyol. The insecticidal effect of B. sarmientoi oil and its main constituents (guaiol, bulnesol and hanamyol) on Spodoptera littoralis, Rhopalosiphum padi and Myzus persicae was studied. Guaiol affected the aphids in a dose-response fashion, showing low efficiency, while bulnesol and hanamyol were inactive. Both the oil and its constituents were also assayed for antifungal action against Fusarium spp. and phytotoxicity to Lactuca sativa. Among the pure compounds tested, bulnesol had a low-moderate effect on Fusarium moniliforme while hanamyol had a strong effect on Fusarium solani. Neither the oil nor the tested compounds affected L. sativa germination or radicle length, indicating that B. sarmientoi is not phytotoxic.

El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar el comportamiento diferencial de dos indicadores de rendimiento académico mediante modelos de regresión lineal multivariante: el indicador tradicional –promedio de calificaciones– y un indicador novedoso –el avance en la carrera– definido como la razón entre los créditos acumulados por el alumno durante cierto período de tiempo y los créditos que teóricamente debió acumular en dicho período de acuerdo con el plan de estudios programado. Se trata de una investigación correlacional, de corte transversal, de variables no manipuladas experimentalmente. Participaron 587 estudiantes matriculados en carreras de Química de la Universidad de la República (UdelaR) durante 2000-2003, con al menos una asignatura aprobada durante el período comprendido entre marzo de 2003 y marzo de 2005. El grupo de participantes fue dividido aleatoriamente en dos muestras: estimación –se construyeron los modelos de regresión lineal incluyendo análisis de interacciones y diagnóstico de anomalías– y validación –los modelos fueron validados mediante contrastes de hipótesis de igualdad de parámetros. Los factores explicativos considerados fueron el rendimiento previo, las metas académicas de los estudiantes, la percepción de su propia capacidad y variables sociodemográficas. Los dos indicadores están notablemente correlacionados entre sí (r=0,615, p<0,001) y ninguno correlaciona significativamente con las metas de resultado (promedio, p=0,612; avance, p=0,358). Los modelos multivariantes fueron satisfactoriamente validados y muestran que los indicadores se ven igualmente afectados por el rendimiento previo, que resultó la variable dominante (promedio, p=0,493, p<0,001; avance, p=0,484, p<0,001). Se diferencian en que el promedio además resulta afectado por la capacidad percibida (p=0,175, p<0,001) y, de manera indirecta, por las metas de aprendizaje (p=0,16, p<0,05, controlando por capacidad percibida). El comportamiento de ambos indicadores es similar, siendo los estudiantes que obtienen las peores calificaciones los más susceptibles de presentar retraso curricular. Hay una dominancia del rendimiento previo como predictor de ambas formas de rendimiento futuro.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
EI óxido nitrico ("NO) es un mensajero biol6gico sumamente importante y versatil, involucrado en la neurotransmisi6n, el mantenimiento de la homeostasis vascular y en los mecanismos primarios de la defensa inmune. Es un radical libre producido in vivo por un grupo de enzimas lIamada Oxido Nitrico Sintasas (NOS). Los efectos del ·NO estan mediados por reacciones directas con hemoproteinas 0 mediante especies reactivas derivadas de reacciones del ·NO con oxigeno, super6xido y metales. La nitrosaci6n de tioles proteicos es una modificaci6n dependiente de ·NO que ha tomado un gran protagonismo ultimamente, ya que estarla implicada en mecanismos de serializaci6n celular. A pesar de haberse encontrado mas de 100 protefnas con cistefnas modificadas por S-nitrosaci6n, aun es necesario establecer cuales son los mecanismos par los que se forman y descomponen estos compuestos in vivo. Para esto es necesario contar con una tecnica de identificaci6n y caracterizaci6n de S-nitrosotioles (RSNO) eficiente. Se han desarrollado varios metod os para la cuantificaci6n y determinaci6n de RSNO de bajo peso molecular y proteicos, entre ellos encontramos el metodo de Saville, la quimioluminiscencia y el biotin switch. EI biotin switch es el metodo de referencia para la identificaci6n de proteinas S-nitrosadas, pero sufre de baja reproducibilidad en los resultados. Esta tecnica se basa en la reducci6n del RSNO con ascorbato, dejando los tioles libres para la uni6n con un reactivo biotinilado, marcando especificamente los tioles que se encontraban nitrosados. La eficiencia del ascorbato como agente reductor ha mostrado ser variable y dependiente de la muestra biol6gica a analizar, y se ha identificado como el punto debil de la tecnica de biotin switch. Por esta raz6n nos planteamos estudiar metodologias alternativas para la denitrosaci6n de RSNO. En este trabajo se ensay6 en primer lugar la capacidad de halogenuros, seudohalogenuros, y una variedad de organomercuriales, de denitrosar RSNO de bajo peso molecular (S-nitrosoglutati6n) y proteicos (S-nitrosoalbumina y S-nitrosotiorredoxina). Demostramos que el ioduro tiene una capacidad denitrosante significativa, destacandose dentro de los halogenuros ensayados. Por otro lado se via que los organomercuriales efectivamente reaccionan con RSNO, provocando la denitrosaci6n y uniendose a los tioles. En funci6n de los resultados obtenidos se evalua la utilidad de estos organomercuriales como potenciales herramientas para el desarrollo de una nueva tecnica de descomposici6n e identificaci6n especifica de S-nitrosotioles.

A summary of the resource.
Se analizó el comportamiento de amilasas de origen vegetal, fungico y bacteriano asi como de una a-amilasa pancreatica y una amiloglucosidasa frente a adsorbentes para cromatografia de afinidad. De acuerdo con el comportamiento de las diferentes amilasas analizaqas frente a adsorbentes hidrof6bicos, fue posible establecer una escala de hidrofobicidad de las mismas. Por otro lado. 10s resultados obtenidos demuestran c1aramente que diferentes mecanismos gobiernan 10s procesos de interacci6n tiofilica e hidrof6bica . Se observ6 asimismo que la adsorci6n a ligandos aromaticos pod ria ser· debida a diferentes mecanismos de interacci6n, 10s cuales a su vez. son "dirigidos" tanto por las condiciones en que se desarrolla el proceso cromatografico, como por las caracteristicas estructurales de la enzlma en analisis.
