Activated carbon fibers (ACF) are known as excellent adsorbent materials due to their fast adsorption rate and easy handling characteristic. The ACF can be manufactured from the polyacrylonitrile fiber, based on an usual carbon fibers (CF) production process accomplished by an additional activation process. The aim of the present work is to describe the production, chemical/morphological characterization and application potentiality of activated carbon fiber felt (ACFF) produced from textile PAN fiber, using a set of homemade equipment. The 5.0 dtex PAN fiber tow with 200 thousand filaments was oxidized and used as raw material for felt production. The oxidized PAN fiber felt (OPFF) was displaced in a special sample holder, carbonized (900 °C) and then activated in CO2 atmosphere at 1000 °C in an electric tubular furnace. All steps of the process were performed as fast as possible, and characterization was done by 77 K N2 isotherms, adsorption isotherms in liquid phase, scanning electronic microscope, X-ray diffraction and surface chemistry by Bhoem methodology. The results confirmed the production of essentially microporous (pore < 3.2 nm, centered on 1.2 nm) and 1,300 m2 g-1 surface area. In this report, we studied the effect of the addition of manganite nanoparticles on the microstructure and magnetotransport properties of polyaniline polymers. We showed experimental results on the fractal dimension of the polyaniline–manganite nanocomposites by means of small angle X-ray scattering measurements. A decrease in the number of polarons is observed for the composite with a concentration of 20% manganite nanoparticles. On the other hand, for the same concentration, the presence of a low magnetic field increases the number of polarons, in relation to an enhancement of the negative low field magnetoresistance (LFMR). This enhancement was observed for a critical amount of manganite nanoparticle addition in the whole temperature regime analyzed, as envisaged from the low magnetic field dependence in the polyaniline polaron formation observed using confocal Raman spectroscopy at room temperature.

We report the effect of La0.57Li0.3TiO3 (LLTO) nanoparticles addition, with different crystallite size, on the lithium conductivity of LLTO-PMMA nanocomposites. X-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry analyses showed a moderate increase of the disorder on the polymer chains with the addition of LLTO nanoparticles. Confocal Raman spectroscopy analysis evidenced lithium nitrate dissociation for both LLTO-loaded and unloaded polymer. Additionally, this technique also revealed that the free nitrate anions are mostly located in the proximity of LLTO nanoparticles interface, thus evidencing its participation in the lithium dissociation on these nanocomposites. An enhancement in the lithium conductivity in more than one order of magnitude was observed for all nanocomposites, in respect to LLTO-unloaded polymer, showing a maximum lithium conductivity of σtotal~1.13×10−4 S/cm at room temperature, for a 50 nm LLTO crystallite mean size addition

In this report, we study the effect of the addition of fluorine-free 2,2′-bis(4,5-dimethylimidazole) (BDI) on lithium-ion solid polymer electrolytes based on lithium nitrate and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Confocal Raman spectroscopy and theoretical Raman calculations were performed to study lithium dissociation and the interaction mechanism of the lithium and nitrate ions with the BDI additive. Additionally, X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the mean coherence length of the PMMA chains is influenced by the BDI concentration. The incorporation of the BDI additive favors the dissociation of lithium salt leading to a maximum enhancement on the lithium conductivity of up to 1.88 × 10−4 S cm−1 for a critical BDI addition of ∼5% with respect to PMMA, which is very high in comparison with the conductivities of ∼10−4 S cm−1 usually observed for these solid polymer electrolytes.

Herein, we report the tuning of the structural and organic magnetoresistance response of poly(9-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) with magnetic nanoparticle addition under exposure to low applied magnetic fields. X-ray diffraction analysis showed evidence of PVK conformational changes by either adding magnetic nanoparticles or by applying an external magnetic field. Molecular dynamics simulations suggested that the loss of aromaticity could lead to slight but detectable modifications in the PVK structure. Confocal Raman spectroscopy under low applied magnetic field evidenced modifications in PVK singlet and triplet populations followed by theoretical simulation to assign the vibrational modes in PVK different multiplicities. Both the addition of magnetic nanoparticles and the presence of an applied magnetic field showed an increase in the PVK triplet-to-singlet ratio. PVK nanocomposites showed negative low field magnetoresistance (MR) reaching maximum values of MR (2 kOe) = −1.1 and −9.0% for T = 280 and 20 K, respectively. The MR dependence with low applied magnetic fields showed a typical behavior in agreement with the electron–hole recombination mechanism. This latter effect could be experimentally associated with the change in the PVK triplet-to-singlet ratio, as observed by Raman analysis. In addition, the PVK magnetoresistance effect could also be ascribed to conformational changes induced by the presence of magnetic nanoparticles and an applied magnetic field, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Four strains of endophytic microorganisms isolated from carrot root were able to carry out the reduction of the carbonyl group with diverse degree of enantio-, and diasteroselectivity. Furthermore, biotransformation in the presence of bacterial inhibitor affects the stereochemical outcome of the reaction, and the concomitant addition of a yeast inhibitor results in a large decrease in the conversion percentage. These results indicate that endophytic microorganisms might be involved in the enantioselective reduction of ketones and ketoesters with fresh carrot root pieces.

The barrier for internal rotation around the OOCH3 bond in 2,3,5,6- tetrafluoroanisole was calculated using the density functional theory (DFT) and secondorder Møller–Plesset (MP2) methods with Pople’s basis sets up to 6-311��G(3df,2p) and Jensen basis sets up to pc-3. The results are converged only if fairly large basis sets are used (at least 6-311��G(3df,2pd) or pc-2). Both the DFT and MP2 potential energy curves show internal structure. Two minima and three maxima are observed on the curves, arising from the interplay between lone-pair delocalization and changes in the hybridization around the oxygen atom, together with the attraction between the positively polarized hydrogens in the methyl group and the negatively polarized fluorine atom at the ortho position. These critical points are somehow ironed out by the addition of zero-point and thermal corrections to the energy curves. At this level, the MP2 method can describe reasonably well the previously determined single-well experimental rotational barrier, 2.7 � 2.0 kcal/mol at 298 K, while all DFT methods yield a much smaller result. As observed experimentally, the OOCH3 group is perpendicular to the aryl ring in the equilibrium structure, although two very close minima with an intermediate hump at 90° are still observable. The theoretical free energy barrier of rotation at the MP2(full)/pc-2 level is 2.0 � 1.0 kcal/mol, in reasonable agreement with the experimental determination.

Disulfide reduction of Kluyveromyces lactis and Aspergillus oryzae β-galactosidases and β-lactoglobulin was assessed. Reduction was performed using one of two thiol-containing agents: dithiothreitol (DTT) or thiopropyl-agarose with a high degree of substitution (1000 μmol of SH groups/g of dried gel). Both reductants allowed an increase of three- (for K. lactis β-galactosidase) and fourfold (for A. oryzae β-galactosidase) in the initial content of SH groups in the lactases. Nearly sevenfold fewer micromoles of SH groups per milligram of protein were needed to perform the reduction of K. lactis β-galactosidase with thiopropyl-agarose than for the same reduction with DTT. However, for A. oryzae β-galactosidase, nearly twice as many micromoles of SH groups per milligram of protein were needed with thiopropylagarose than with DTT. Disulfide bonds in β-lactoglobulin were not accessible to thiopropyl-agarose, since this reduction was only possible in the presence of 6 M urea. These results proved that highly substituted thiopropyl-agarose is as good a reducing agent as DTT, for the reduction of disulfide bonds in proteins. Moreover, excess reducing agent was very simply separated from the reduced protein by filtration, making it easier to control the reaction and providing reduced protein solutions free of reductant. All these advantages substantially cut down the time required and therefore the cost of the overall process.

A summary of the resource.
This enzyme immobilization approach involves the formation of disulfide (−S–S–) bonds with the support. Thus, enzymes bearing exposed nonessential thiol (SH) groups can be immobilized onto thiol-reactive supports provided with reactive disulfides or disulfide oxides under mild conditions. The great potential advantage of this approach is the reversibility of the bonds formed between the activated solid phase and the thiol-enzyme, because the bound protein can be released with an excess of a low-molecular-weight thiol (e.g., dithiothreitol [DTT]). This is of particular interest when the enzyme degrades much faster than the adsorbent, which can be reloaded afterwards. The possibility of reusing the polymeric support after inactivation of the enzyme may be of interest for the practical use of immobilized enzymes in large-scale processes in industry, where their use has often been hampered by the high cost of the support material. Disulfide oxides (thiolsulfinate or thiolsulfonate groups) can be introduced onto a wide variety of support materials with different degrees of porosity and with different mechanical resistances. Procedures are given for the preparation of thiol-activated solid phases and the covalent attachment of thiol-enzymes to the support material via disulfide bonds. The possibility of reusing the polymeric support is also shown.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The ionic salts of rhenium(IV) of formula (Cat)2[ReI6] with Cat ) Li+ (1), Na+ (2), K+ (3), Rb+ (4), Cs+ (5), NH4 + (6), and AsPh4 + (7) [AsPh4 + ) tetraphenylarsonium cation] have been synthesized, and the structures of two of them (namely, 3 and 6) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group Pn, with a ) 7.815(1) Å, b ) 7.874(1) Å, c ) 11.335(1) Å, â ) 90.38(1)°, and Z ) 2 whereas 6 crystallizes in the tetragonal system, space group P4/mnc, with a ) 7.881(1) Å, b ) 7.881(1) Å, c ) 11.474(2) Å, and Z ) 2. The structures of 3 and 6 are made up of discrete [ReI6]2- anions and K+ (3) or NH4 + (6) cations held together by electrostatic forces (3 and 6) and N-HâââI hydrogen bonds (6). The rhenium(IV) cation in 3 and 6 is surrounded by six iodide ligands in an octahedral environment with the Re-I bond lengths varying in a very narrow range [2.704(3)-2.738(3) and 2.716(1)-2.722(2) Å for 3 and 6, respectively]. The [ReI6]2- anions in 6 describe a tetragonally distorted body-centered cubic structure. In 3, the arrangement of these units is similar but more distorted. The different arrangement of the anions in 3 and 6 accounts for the centrosymmetric (6) and non-centrosymmetric (3) structures observed. The magnetic properties of 1-7 were investigated in the temperature range 2.0-300 K. The magnetic behavior of 7 is that of a magnetically diluted Re(IV) complex with a large value of the zero-field splitting of the ground level (j2Dj ) 49.8 cm-1) whereas those of 1, 2, and 4-6 are typical of antiferromagnetically coupled systems with susceptibility maxima at 28 (1), 27 (2), 21 (4), 16 (5), and 20 K (6). In the case of compound 3, its magnetic behavior in the high-temperature range is parallel to that observed in the parent salts but below 24 K it is a weak ferromagnet with a canting angle of ca. 1.2°.

Within all the eukaryotic cells myo-inositol phosphates (InsPs) are an important group of biomolecules that are potentially related to signaling functions. The most abundant member of this family in nature is InsP6 (phytate, L(12-) in its fully deprotonated form). The complicated chemical behavior of this molecule demands a great effort to understand its function in the cell medium. In this work we follow our earlier studies on the interaction of InsP6 with metal cations by inclusion of polyamines (both biogenic and synthetic) as potential agents to produce stable adducts. The stability constants of InsP6-amine adducts and the relevant thermodynamic parameters ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° were determined at 37.0 °C and 0.15 M ionic strength by means of potentiometric titrations and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The biogenic amines studied were 1,4-diaminobutane (putrescine, put), 1,5-diaminopentane (cadaverine, cad), N-(3-aminopropyl)-1,4-diaminobutane (spermidine, spd), N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)-1,4-diaminobutane (spermine, spm), and 1-(4-aminobutyl)guanidine (agmatine, agm), while the synthetic models of longer polyamines were 1,19-dimethyl-1,4,7,10,13,16,19-heptaazanonadecane (Me2hexaen), 1,22-dimethyl-1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22-octaazadocosane (Me2heptaen), 1,25-dimethyl-1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25-nonaazapentacosane (Me2octaen) and N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)-1,3-propanediamine (3,3,3-tet). With the aid of molecular modeling, we also studied the structural aspects of molecular recognition in operation. The final result is a balance between many parameters including charge of the species, flexibility of the amines, H-bonds in the adduct, and desolvation processes.

The association of tungsten(VI) and molybdenum(VI) oxyanions with metal cations was investigated under conditions simulating those prevailing in most natural waters. Potentiometric titrations were carried out for the systems containing tungsten(VI) or molybdenum(VI) anions and metal cations. The selection includes the major metal cations and some other ions of high environmental relevance. At neutral and basic pH values, in the presence of the most abundant metal cations, ionic pair species such as [Ca(WO4)] or [Ca(MoO4)] are formed to high extents. For the acidic pH range, polyoxoanion associations with cations are also found but are only relevant for tungsten(VI) in the conditions of the natural aquatic systems. The present results provide the basis for studying W(VI) and Mo(VI) speciation in natural aquatic systems, on which the environmental fate, bioavailability and toxicity of the elements depend.

<p>Among the infectious illnesses designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), four illnesses are major health concerns in the developing world: malaria and three parasitic diseases caused by genetically related parasites belonging to the trypanosomatid genus and kinetoplastida order: American trypanosomiasis, human African trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis. This review focuses on the most relevant efforts carried out to develop ruthenium compounds as potential agents for the treatment of these diseases. Those series of compounds for which especial efforts have been made to modify structures performing a sort of rational design and to identify their molecular targets and mode of action were emphasized. Aspects related with the potentialities and perspectives of ruthenium compounds for this particular inorganic medicinal chemistry field are also included</p>

La propuesta de este libro es simular trabajos de investigación en Química Bioinorgánica mediante el uso de "Estudio de casos", destinados a estudiantes de diferentes carreras relacionadas con la Química. Se busca, que a través de los resultados científicos que se vayan proporcionando al estudiante o que él mismo obtenga, se pueda jerarquizar la importancia de la investigación al servicio de la enseñanza de conceptos básicos de Química General e Inorgánica, incentivar la lectura científica, desenvolver un pensamiento crítico y lograr nuevos conocimientos. En los capítulos se incursiona en temáticas de interés social enmarcadas en la salud, especialmente en el desarrollo de compuestos antitumorales e insulinomiméticos y de interés ambiental, como es el mundo marino. Se utilizan estos tópicos para profundizar aspectos analíticos, estructurales, termodinámicos y cinéticos de procesos químicos y bioquímicos, incentivando el uso y la comprensión de metodologías espectroscópicas (IR, UV-Vis, EPR, difracción de rayos X), voltamétricas, conductimétricas, de propiedades magnéticas, así como bioquímicas (actividad superoxidodismutasa, interacción con ADN) y biológicas (citotoxicidad).

As part of our efforts to develop organometallic ruthenium compounds bearing activity on both trypanosomatid parasites and tumor cells, a new Ru(II)–cyclopentadienyl clotrimazole complex, [RuCp(PPh3)2(CTZ)](CF3SO3), where Cp = cyclopentadienyl, CTZ = clotrimazole, was synthesized and characterized. The compound was evaluated in vitro on T. cruzi (Y strain), the infective form of T. brucei brucei strain 427 (cell line 449), on three human tumor cell lines with different sensitivity to cisplatin (A2780, ovary; MCF7, breast; HeLa, cervix) and on J774 murine macrophages as mammalian cell model. The new compound is more cytotoxic on T. cruzi and on the tumor cell lines than the reference drugs (Nifurtimox and cisplatin, respectively). In addition, complexation of the bioactive CTZ to the {RuCp(PPh3)} moiety leads to significant increase of the antiparasitic and antitumoral activity. To get insight into the potential “dual” mechanism of antiparasitic action emerging from the presence of Ru(II) and CTZ in a single molecule, the inhibitory effect of this new complex on the biosynthesis of T. cruzi sterols of membrane and the interaction with DNA were studied. Although the tested complex does not affect DNA, it affects the T. cruzi biosynthetic pathway of conversion of squalene to squalene oxide. According to the results reported here, [RuCp(PPh3)2(CTZ)][CF3SO3] could be considered a prospective antiparasitic and/or antitumoral agent that deserves further evaluation

Chagas’ disease, considered incurable, is a major third world parasitosis that affects millions of people in Latin America. Previous work has shown that ruthenium clotrimazole complexes are more active against Trypanosoma cruzi , causative agent of Chagas’ disease, than the corresponding free ligand. In this work, the synthesis and characterization of a series of new Ru(II) complexes with different antitrypanosomal active compounds is presented. Complexes of general formulae [RuIICl2(dmso)2L], where dmso�/ dimethylsulfoxide and L�/5-nitro-2-furaldehyde semicarbazone (L1), N4-n-butyl-5-nitro-2-furaldehyde semicarbazone (L2) or 3- (5-nitrofuryl)acroleine semicarbazone (L3), were prepared in good yields by reaction of [RuIICl2(dmso)4] with L in ethanol or toluene solutions. Complexes were characterized by elemental analyses and electronic, FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. Crystal and molecular structures of [RuCl2(dmso)2L1] and [RuCl2(dmso)2L2] were determined by X-ray diffraction methods. In both crystals the ruthenium metal atom is in a quite similar elongated octahedral environment, equatorially coordinated to the semicarbazone molecule, acting as a bidentate ligand through its azomethynic nitrogen and carbonylic oxygen atoms. The sixfold coordination is completed with the sulfur atoms of two dimethylsulfoxide ligands at cis positions and two chlorine ions at the axial positions. The proposed formula for L3 complex was supported by FTIR, NMR and theoretical studies. NOE�/NMR experiments allowed to assign L3 spatial distribution in the complex.

El potencial antioxidante de diversos extractos vegetales está siendo reconocido como ventajoso frente a los antioxidantes sintéticos de uso corriente. En el presente artículo, se comparan extractos de romero, carqueja, orégano y marcela, extraídos utilizando como solvente etanol o CO2 (dióxido de carbono) supercrítico. Sus efectos sobre el aceite de girasol se midieron mediante la determinación de la estabilidad oxidativa empleando un equipo Rancimat a 100 ºC o por el método del DPPH (radical difenilpicrilhidrazilo). Los resultados demuestran que el extracto de romero, provoca un aumento considerable en la estabilidad oxidativa, comparable al del TBHQ. Los otros extractos mencionados, también exhiben un aumento, aunque menores a los de romero.

A summary of the resource.
Supercritical fluid extraction with carbon dioxide has been demonstrated to be an attractive method to apply to different processes involved in the food industry due to several advantages when it is compared with conventional organic solvents. Supercritical CO2 extracts from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), boldo (Peumus boldus), cedron (Aloysia citrodora), congorosa (Maytenus ilicifolia), yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) and pitanga (Eugenia uniflora) were obtained at different extraction conditions; their antioxidant effect was studied and compared with that obtained by traditional solvent maceration methods and with that shown by different common synthetic antioxidants. Additionally, antibacterial activity of extracts from the different herbs obtained was determined against different microorganisms. Supercritical extracts from these herbs were efficient in stabilizing sunflower oil; thus, they could represent a valuable natural alternative to synthetic antioxidants. Herbal extracts prove to be a source of compounds with antibacterial activity, with promising applications in the control of microbial deterioration of food.
