Although several efforts to promote breastfeeding have been implemented worldwide, the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life remains low. One of the factors responsible for this trend is the widespread sales and marketing of breast-milk substitutes. In this context, the present work aimed at exploring mothers and health professionals' social representations of breastfeeding and infant formula. The study was conducted in Montevideo (Uruguay), as part of the periodic assessment performed by the Uruguayan government to monitor the marketing of breast-milk substitutes according to the OMS/UNICEF NetCode toolkit. A total of 330 mothers of children under 24 months old and 154 health professionals were recruited at 33 health care facilities. Participants were asked to complete two word association tasks, one with breastfeeding and the other with infant formula. Inductive coding was used to classify the responses into categories and dimensions. The structure of the social representations was explored considering the frequency of mention and the average rank of appearance of the categories. Results showed that mothers’ social representations mainly positioned breastfeeding as a feeding practice, whereas infant formulas were mainly perceived as a complement to breast-milk that provides support. In the case of health professionals, the social representations of breastfeeding and infant formulas were in line with scientific evidence and health recommendations. These results suggest that efforts to promote breastfeeding should focus on raising public awareness of the risks associated with breast-milk substitutes and on overcoming the systemic barriers to breastfeeding, particularly among working mothers.

This work presents the synthesis and characterization of eight copper complexes [Cu(L-dipeptide)(neo)]·nH2O (neo = neocuproine) and their cytotoxic activities against tumor cell lines. The crystalline structure of [Cu(gly-val)(neo)]·3H2O, [Cu(gly-leu)(neo)]·H2O, [Cu(ala-gly)(neo)]·4H2O, [Cu(val-phe)(neo)]·4.5H2O and [Cu(phe-phe)(neo)]·3H2O were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In all of them, the Cu(II) is pentacoordinated, in a square pyramidal environment. The coordination observed in solid state was retained in the major species in aqueous solution, as suggested by Electronic Paramagnet Resonance and UV–vis spectroscopies. The complexes were shown to have affinity for isolated DNA, as determined by Circular Dichroism experiments. Furthermore, biological experiments showed that all the complexes present high cytotoxic activity against the cell lines: MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 (human metastatic breast adenocarcinomas, the first triple negative), MCF-10A (human normal breast cells), A549 (human lung epithelial carcinoma) and MRC-5 (human lung epithelial cells). Together, these results suggest that these compounds are promising steps towards new effective drugs to treat cancer.

New thiazolyl derivatives (BT and TT) and their copper (II) complexes [Cu2Cl2(BT)2] (Cu-BT) and [Cu4ClO2(TT)2]PF6⋅3.5H2O (Cu-TT) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR and 13C NMR, HRMS, X-ray diffraction, IR and UV–Vis spectroscopies. The crystal structure of Cu-BT shows the formation of a dinuclear complex where each copper(II) center is bonded to two thiazol N atoms, from different BT ligands, one deprotonated amide N atom, an O atom from the ester terminal groups and a chlorine atom. The structure found for Cu-TT is a positively charged tetranuclear moiety containing two deprotonated TT ligands, a chlorine anion, two hydroxide anions acting as bridges between the copper centers and a water molecule. The cytotoxic activity of both copper complexes was evaluated on metastatic breast cancer cell lines, characterized for its rapidly dividing behavior. Both, Cu-BT and Cu-TT, show higher cytotoxic activity against these tumor cells than free BT and TT and also than cisplatin. In addition, we found that both complexes interact with DNA. Consistently, they also show cytotoxicity against a rapidly dividing non-tumor cell line, although with higher IC50, being such interaction and selectivity an indicator of the possible coexistence of more than one mechanism of action.

Fifteen new allyldithiocarbimates were prepared from different allylic bromides and various potassium dithiocarbimates, yielding (Z)-2-(methoxycarbonyl)-3-(X-nitrophenyl)allyl-(N-R-sulfonyl)dithiocarbimates (where X = 2, 3 and 4; R = phenyl, 4-fluorophenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, 4-bromophenyl and 4-iodophenyl). These anions were isolated as tetraphenylphosphonium salts and characterized by HRMS, infrared, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. Molecular electrostatic potentials were used to evaluate intermolecular interactions present in the new substances and to explain variations observed on their melting points. Single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments confirmed the Z stereochemistry of the allyldithiocarbimate anions. C–HO, C–HN, C–HS and C–Hπ intermolecular interactions in the solid state were studied by X-ray diffraction and Hirshfeld surface analyses. The new compounds inhibited the mycelial growth of various fungi species responsible for severe plant diseases. The allylithiocarbimates were especially active against Botrytis cinerea, with IC50 values as low as 20 μM, being more effective than the active principals of the commercial fungicides Ziram and Mancozeb.

Temporal Dominance of Sensations (TDS) and Temporal Check-all-that-Apply (TCATA) from three different case studies are compared by means of canonical correlation analysis, orthogonalization and principal component analysis of the vertically unfolded data (which means that the matrices compared have samples*timepoints in the rows and attributes in the columns). The multivariate analyses decompose the datasets into common and distinct components. The results showed that the major part of the variation is common between the two methods for the cases investigated, but that there were subtle differences showing better discrimination for TCATA than TDS. TDS showed a more complex data structure and more unique variation. The unique variation in TDS is, however, difficult to interpret. The methods are more different towards the end of the mastication, this can be explained both by the difficulty of assessors to agree on the dominant attributes at the bolus stage for TDS, and that assessors may forget to unclick attributes in TCATA. This work builds on recent methodological studies on temporal methods that aim to better understand differences among methodologies and ultimately to identify what methods could be better for answering different objectives.

African trypanosomiasis is a major problem for human and animal health in endemic countries, where it threatens millions of people and affects economic development. New drugs are needed to overcome the toxicity, administration, low efficacy, and resistance issues of the current chemotherapy. Robust, simple, and economical high‐throughput, whole‐cell‐based assays are required to accelerate the identification of novel chemical entities. With this aim, we generated a bioluminescent cell line of the bloodstream stage of Trypanosoma brucei brucei and established a screening assay. Trypanosomes were stably transfected to constitutively express a thermostable red‐shifted luciferase. The growth phenotype and drug sensitivity of the reporter cell line were essentially identical to that of the parental cell line. The endogenous luciferase activity, measured by a simple bioluminescence assay, proved to be proportional to parasite number and metabolic status. The assay, optimized to detect highly potent compounds in a 96‐well‐plate format, was validated by screening a small compound library (inter‐assay values for Z' factor and coefficient variation were 0.77 and 5.8%, respectively). With a hit‐confirmation ratio of ~97%, the assay was potent enough to identify several hits with EC50 ≤ 10 μM. Preliminary tests indicated that the assay can be scaled up to a 384‐well‐plate format without compromising its robustness. In summary, we have generated reporter trypanosomes and a simple, robust, and affordable bioluminescence screening assay with great potential to speed up the early‐phase drug discovery against African trypanosomes.

Food waste is a major barrier to a sustainable society. Cleaner production is most effectively approached by amongst others avoiding waste. A lot of food waste is due to consumer perception of sub-optimality of foods, and supermarkets can offer ‘imperfect’ products to consumers at a reduced price in order to fight food waste. However, little is known about how this is perceived by consumers and whether it backfires as negative associations about the store, this is particularly under-researched for consumers in the global south. An online experimental survey was conducted in Uruguay to qualitatively explore consumer’s associations with stores selling suboptimal food, and to quantitatively compare the associations generated by three types of sub-optimality. Findings revealed that associations were related to four main dimensions. Consumers majorly thought of which retail practices and personnel behaviour cause the sub-optimality and the relationship between consumers and company, as well as which signal the products send, and whether or not they consider choiceof the item. Few positive associations were mentioned. However, they emerged more often for fresh produce suboptimal in appearance, particularly when price is reduced, and among deal prone consumers. Associations on relationship and signal were primarily negative and in reaction to food with package damage. Associations on choice were more frequent for products nearing expiration date. Price reduction appeared to send a mixed signal to consumers. Results suggest that retailers should improve their overall image and communicate their precise reason for offering suboptimal food, in order to avoid a negative impact on store image.

In this study, activated biochar was produced using pilot-scale technologies of fast pyrolysis and activation to create desirable morphology, surface chemistry, and adsorptive properties for application in supercapacitors. First, residues from white birch were converted into biochar by fast pyrolysis (~ 450 °C). Then, physical (using CO2) or chemical (using KOH) activation was carried out in a homemade pilot-scale furnace at 900 °C. These synthesized materials presented distinct porosity structures: micro-/mesoporous (CO2 material) and highly microporous (KOH material), reaching surface areas of up to 1700 m2 g−1. Electrochemical results showed that KOH-activated biochar had higher specific electrical capacitance in both acidic and neutral electrolytes with a maximum specific capacitance value of 350 and 118 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, respectively; while, for CO2-activated biochar, the maximum obtained values were 204 and 14 F g−1. The greater proportion of oxygenated and nitrogenated functional groups on the surface of the KOH activated biochar, along with its high surface area (with wider porosity), improved its performance as a supercapacitor electrode. Specifically, the low proportion of ultramicropores was determinant for its better electrochemical behavior, especially in the neutral electrolyte. Indeed, these results are similar to those found in the literature on the electrical capacitance of carbonaceous materials synthesized in a small-scale furnace. Thus, the chemical-activated biochar made from wood residues in pilot-scale furnaces is a promising material for use as electrodes for supercapacitors.

A summary of the resource.
β-galactosidase is an enzyme responsible for catalyzing the hydrolysis of the lactose β-1,4 linkage into α-D-glucose and β-D-galactose. β-galactosidase is found in plants, animals and microorganisms. In Beta-Galactosidase: Properties, Structure and Functions, the authors discuss the main microorganisms that produce β-galactosidase, the characteristics of the culture media, bioprocessing parameters, the most relevant downstream steps used in the recovery of microbial β-galactosidase, as well as the main immobilization techniques. Next, this compilation examines β-galactosidases classification, mechanisms, characterization and applications. Recent advances in galacto-oligosaccharides production and purification are also covered, and different challenges and future perspectives are discussed. In the closing study, strains with β-Galactosidase activity were isolated from 25 Yak Yoghourt samples collected from the Gannan pasturing area of Gansu Province. An efficient β-galactosidase producing strain SYA2 screened out from 21 strains was identified as Enterobacter sp. by means of morphological feature observation, physiological and biochemical characteristics measurement, and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Currently, biodiesel is mainly produced by transesterification with short-chain alcohols of oils from different sources, in particular from oil crops, such as soybean and canola. Since the use of crops for the generation of fuels competes with their use as food, it seems appropriate to explore new oil sources for the production of biodiesel, such as the intracellular triglycerides accumulated by oleaginous yeasts. In this case, to achieve a competitive process, yeast production should be carried out using low-cost fermentable substrates such as industrial wastes or by-products. In this work we optimized the production of intracellular lipids by a previously selected oleaginous yeast strain in a fed-batch culture in presence of crude glycerol as a source of carbon and energy. In the optimized conditions an important improvement of lipid concentration was achieved, obtaining 12.2 g L−1 of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) and 26.6 g L−1 of dry biomass in 360 h of culture.

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has provided advice in relation to the Chemical Weapons Convention on assistance and protection. We present the SAB’s response to a request from the OPCW Director-General in 2014 for information on the best practices for preventing and treating the health effects from acute, prolonged, and repeated organophosphorus nerve agent (NA) exposure. The report summarises pre- and post-exposure treatments, and developments in decontaminants and adsorbing materials, that at the time of the advice, were available for NAs. The updated information provided could assist medics and emergency responders unfamiliar with treatment and decontamination options related to exposure to NAs. The SAB recommended that developments in research on medical countermeasures and decontaminants for NAs should be monitored by the OPCW, and used in assistance and protection training courses and workshops organised through its capacity building programmes.

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has provided advice on assistance and protection in relation to the Chemical Weapons Convention. In this, the first of several papers describing the SAB's work on this topic, we describe advice given in response to questions from the OPCW Director-General in 2013 and 2014 on the status of available medical countermeasures and treatments to organophosphorus nerve agents. This paper provides the evidence base for this advice which recommended to the OPCW pretreatments, emergency care, and long-term treatments that were available at the time of the request for this class of chemical warfare agent (CWA). It includes a bibliography of over 140 scientific references, which can be used as a platform for watching future medical countermeasure developments. The information provided in this paper should serve as a valuable reference for medical professionals and emergency responders who may have no knowledge of the symptoms and treatment options of exposure to nerve agents.

OBJECTIVES: Lead (Pb) and manganese (Mn) are confirmed neurotoxins but it is unclear to what extent low-level exposure produces a unique behavioral signature. The objective of this study was to investigate latent cognitive profiles among children (6-8 years) from Montevideo, Uruguay co-exposed to these metals. METHOD: Among 345 children, blood Pb and hair Mn were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy and ICP-MS, respectively. Sixteen measures, reflecting multiple domains of cognitive functioning were gathered: (1) three tests from Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB): Intra-Extra Dimensional Shift (IED), Spatial Span (SSP) and Stockings of Cambridge (SOC), (2) ten tasks from Woodcock-Muñoz Achievement Battery, Revised (WM): Visual-Motor Integration, Verbal Comprehension (Vocabulary, Synonyms, Antonyms, Analogies), Visual-Auditory Comprehension, Concept Formation, Visual Spatial Thinking, Number Inversion and Spatial Relations, (3) Bender Gestalt task, and (4) Weschler block design task. Scores were modeled using latent profile analysis (LPA). Association between blood Pb and hair Mn on performance profiles was assessed using ordinal regression, controlling for confounders. An interaction between Pb and Mn was tested. RESULTS: Mean ± SD of blood Pb was 4.1 ± 2.1 μg/dL and 35% of children had blood Pb ≥ 5 μg/dL. Median [5%, 95%] hair Mn level was 0.8 [0.3, 4.1] ppb. Three latent cognitive performance profiles were identified: high (n = 46, 13%), average (n = 209, 61%) and low (n = 90, 26%). Each one-unit increase in blood Pb was associated with a 28% greater likelihood of belonging to a poorer-performing profile. The association was non-linear, with the effect of Pb on profile membership strongest at lower levels of exposure. There was no meaningful interaction between Pb and Mn. CONCLUSIONS: A behavioral signature for low-level Pb & Mn exposure was not identified, but the likelihood of membership in low-performing profile was higher at lowest levels of blood Pb. There was no effect measure modification between Pb and Mn. Future research should address how complex environments created by chemical exposures and the social context relate to cognitive performance in young children

Background Cadmium (Cd) exposure has adverse health effects in children. Diet contributes to Cd exposure, but dietary components could affect body Cd levels. Objective To examine associations between diet and urinary Cd (U-Cd) in children. Methods In this cross-sectional study conducted in Montevideo, Uruguay, Cd exposure of 5–8 year old children (n = 279 with complete data) was assessed in first morning urine (U-Cd), a marker of long-term exposure, measured by ICP-MS and adjusted for specific gravity. Distribution of U-Cd was (median [5%, 95%]: 0.06 [0.02, 0.17] μg/L); data were natural-log-transformed (ln) for statistical analyses. Serum ferritin (SF), an indicator of iron stores, was measured in fasting samples. Trained nutritionists completed two non-consecutive 24-h dietary recalls with both child and caregiver present. Measures of iron, zinc, calcium and fiber intake, and the consumption of grains, root vegetables, milk, and foods rich in heme iron (white and read meats) and non-heme iron (legumes, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, dried fruit) were derived. Multivariable ordinary least squares (OLS) and ordinal regressions were used to examine associations among tertiles of water Cd, SF, diet, and U-Cd. OLS models were further stratified by sex. Results In covariate-adjusted models, SF was not related to ln-U-Cd. Children in highest tertile of iron and zinc intake had lower ln-U-Cd: (−0.23 [−0.42, −0.03]) and (−0.25 [−0.44, −0.05]), respectively, compared to the reference group. Children consuming higher amounts of foods rich in heme iron had slightly lower ln-U-Cd (−0.17 [−0.36, 0.03]). High grain consumption was related to higher ln-U-Cd (0.25 [0.06, 0.45]). Conclusions Diets rich in grains were related to higher urinary Cd levels among children living in the context of low Cd pollution. Higher intake of iron and zinc was related to lower Cd levels. Given that urinary Cd is mainly a marker of long-term exposure, these findings should be further corroborated.

The reaction of toluene (T) with ·OH produces addition products as well as the benzyl radical (TR). TR can react with ·OH or O2 to produce oxygenated species, for many of which there is no experimental information available. We present here theoretically determined heats of formation (HFs) of 17 such species using the non-isodesmic reactions on the potential energy surface of TR + O2 and T + ·OH +O2. For those species the experimental HFs of which are known, we obtained a good correlation between experimental and theoretical values at the G4 (r2 = 0.999) and M06/cc-pVQZ (r2 = 0.997) levels, thus showing the goodness of the methods used. Experimentally unknown HFs of other radicals (benzyloxyl, spiro [1,2-dioxetane benzyl], hydroxyphenyl and benzylperoxyl) and closed-shell species (salicylic alcohol, benzo[b]oxetane and p-hydroxy cyclohexa-2,5-dienone) were later determined using those methods.

1,4-Thiazepines derivatives are pharmacologically important heterocycles with different applications in medicinal chemistry. In the present work, we describe the preparation of new bicyclic thiazolidinyl-1,4-thiazepines 3 by reaction between azadithiane compounds and Michael acceptors. The reaction scope was explored and the yields were optimized. The activity of the new compounds was evaluated against Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and Caenorhabditis elegans as anthelmintic models and Trypanosoma brucei brucei. The most active compound was 3l, showing an EC50 = 2.8 ± 0.7 μM against T. b. brucei and a selectivity index >71.

A summary of the resource.
The aim of the present research was to explore consumers' conceptualization of feeling good in relation to food and beverages from a cross-cultural perspective. Participants from 14 countries across 5 continents and covering 10 languages (N = 8325) responded to an online survey including word association and free listing tasks related to feeling good in the context of food and beverages. Results were analyzed using inductive coding: a list of main codes was generated in English for each of the tasks, after which native speakers for each language coded the responses. Codes were grouped into categories reflecting common themes from which eight dimensions were identified. Results showed that in the context of foods and beverages, feeling good was mainly associated with specific foods and sensory and hedonic properties. Across the 14 countries, ‘Sweet and fat food’, ‘Fruit and vegetables’, and ‘Protein food’ were the three food categories most associated with feeling good. Emotional aspects of food consumption (‘Taste good’ and emotions) were also relevant. Health and nutrition-related aspects were more relevant for consumers when they were asked to think about how foods and beverages would make them feel good in the future. In other words, food-related feeling good seems to be mainly driven by sensory pleasure at present, but it is also related to nutrition and health in the future. Differences in the strength of the associations between feeling good and the identified categories were found between countries, in line with the existence of cultural differences in food habits, as well as in the importance people attach to the characteristics of foods and beverages. Results from the present work provide insights on the impact of eating and drinking on feeling good in terms of emotional, physical and social aspects, and increase knowledge about the way food and drink can contribute to general well-being.

Esta tesis doctoral fue desarrollada desde la Unidad de Farmacología Clínica (perteneciente al Departamento de Farmacia del Hospital Vilardebó) y el Departamento de Ciencias Farmacéuticas de la Facultad de Química. En la misma se desarrollaron una serie de estudios de investigación con el objetivo del seguimiento y evaluación de pacientes en tratamientocon psicofármacosdonde algunas variables puedan influenciar la respuesta al tratamiento. Muchas veces no es el medicamento en sí mismo el culpable de no lograr los objetivos de efectividad y seguridad sino cómo essu usoen el escenario clínico. Son varias las fuentes de variación que pueden alterar la respuesta a un determinado medicamento. Ellas pueden ser: la hora de administrar el medicamento, la actividad física, los alimentos, la edad, el sexo, también las de origen farmacológico (comedicaciones, procesos farmacodinámicos del medicamento en cuestión), de origen tecnológico (distintas marcas comerciales del mismo principio activo, cómo se libera el fármaco desde la forma farmacéutica) o la propia patología o estado clínico del paciente.Se realizaron Estudios de Utilización de Medicamentos para conocer el uso de benzodiazepinas y antipsicóticos y su comparación con parámetros nacionales e internacionales. Los resultados hallados demuestran un uso poco armónico con las recomendaciones nacionales e internacionales. Dada esta problemática, desde la Unidad de Farmacología Clínica del Hospital Vilardebó se realizaron (y realizan) algunas actividades para mejorar el uso de psicofármacos en esta población. Un aspecto importante de esta tesis fue intentar determinar cómopueden influir diferentesmarcas comerciales de medicamentos en la respuesta al tratamiento. Se realizaron experiencias de comparación de marcas comerciales in vitroy experiencias de intercambio de marcas comerciales en pacientes del Hospital. Los resultados demuestran que salvo una marca de flunitrazepam el resto de los medicamentos estudiados (clozapina y lamotrigina) tienen una condiciónsuficientede calidad biofarmacéutica para estar en el mercado. Se realizó una encuesta a los pacientes sobre el consumo de plantas medicinales, una práctica que es poco tenida en cuenta a la hora de la prescripción, los resultados demuestranqueel consumo de plantas medicinales es elevado, con potenciales interacciones, que se deberían tener en cuenta al momento de la prescripción. Se profundizó en esta tesis la investigación en el uso clozapina en pacientes uruguayos con esquizofrenia con el objetivo principal de evaluar, utilizando metodologías de modelado poblacional, la amplitud y la variabilidad de la exposición a la clozapina y su metabolito activo (norclozapina) en los parámetros farmacocinéticos con un enfoque en el tabaquismo, la edad, el sexo, el consumo de cafeína, la comedicación y las marcas comerciales disponibles. Con esta tesis doctoralse pudo integrar eltrabajo profesional del Químico Farmacéutico desde la Unidad de Farmacología Clínica con algunas de las líneas desarrolladas en el Departamento de Ciencias Farmacéuticas con el objetivo de optimizar los tratamientos farmacológicos en los usuarios del Hospital Vilardebó.

La producción de manzanas es muy importante en Uruguay, con una producción anual de alrededor de 40.000 toneladas, las que son almacenadas en cámaras refrigeradas a 0 °C durante varios meses. Luego de períodos prolongados de almacenamiento se observan problemas de calidad relacionados con cambios fisiológicos, daños físicos y la aparición de enfermedades. El Penicillium expansum es uno de los principales patógenos fúngicos en la poscosecha de manzana y el uso de fungicidas químicos ha sido el método más empleado para su control. Las exigencias actuales de los consumidores han llevado a la búsqueda de alternativas a estos fungicidas que impliquen menores riesgos para la salud y el medio ambiente. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar estrategias de control biológico y la aplicación del polímero natural quitosano para controlar el desarrollo de P. expansum y mantener la calidad de manzanas Red Delicious durante su almacenamiento en cámara fría. La búsqueda de microorganismos antagonistas se realizó a partir de una colección de 68 levaduras aisladas de la Antártida y la selección se basó en su capacidad de crecer en frío, de producir enzimas hidrolíticas y de controlar el patógeno en herida de fruta. En estos ensayos se encontraron 34 levaduras capaces de controlar el desarrollo del patógeno en manzanas Red Delicious. A su vez, estas levaduras fueron evaluadas en otras frutas contra el mismo patógeno y se encontraron cepas de la especie Debaryomyces hansenii con buena capacidad biocontroladora en diferentes patosistemas. El éxito de la estrategia empleada en este trabajo se debió a una selección basada en el conocimiento del patógeno y ciclo de la enfermedad y de las condiciones de almacenamiento en frío de las frutas. Mediante diferentes ensayos se comprobó que la selección de un agente de biocontrol no debe estar determinada por los resultados de los mecanismos de acción, ya que el único ensayo decisivo, es el biocontrol en el patosistema seleccionado. Finalmente se seleccionó la cepa D. hansenii F9D y se evaluó su interacción con el patógeno en herida de fruta mediante q-PCR y SEM. En estos ensayos se verificó que la presencia de la levadura en la herida inhibió la capacidad del patógeno de crecer y desarrollarse más allá de la herida inicial. A su vez, se estudió la capacidad antifúngica in vitro de quitosanos de bajo peso molecular (LMW) y peso molecular medio (MMW) y su capacidad de formar películas y recubrimientos sobre la fruta. El quitosano MMW mostró mayor capacidad de controlar P. expansum in vitro y las películas de este quitosano mostraron mejores características como menor permeabilidad al vapor de agua y menor capacidad de adsorción de agua que las películas de quitosano LMW. Para la aplicación del quitosano en fruta se evaluó la mojabilidad de las soluciones empleando Tween® 20 y Tween® 80. A partir de estos ensayos se decidió trabajar con quitosano MMW 1 % con el agregado de Tween® 80 (0,02 %). En los ensayos en fruta se observó la capacidad del quitosano MMW de controlar la enfermedad causada por P. expansum y la reducir la pérdida calidad de las frutas durante el almacenamiento poscosecha. El efecto en la fruta se debe a las propiedades de barrera al vapor de H2O y a gases del recubrimiento de quitosano que influyen en el metabolismo de las frutas. La combinación de quitosano con la levadura D. hansenii F9D mostró un control de la enfermedad (77 %) menor al obtenido con la levadura sola (90 %). Sin embargo, podría plantearse la mejora de esta estrategia mediante la incorporación de otras sustancias naturales o la evaluación de otro tipo de quitosano que ayuden a mejorar el nivel de control del patógeno.
