A method for the determination of Cu, Cd, Pb and V in Brazilian sugarcane spirit ( “cachaça” in Brazil) using CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles impregnated with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-naphthol (PAN) for extraction of the metals with posterior determination by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry directly in the solid phase is described. The recommended conditions for extraction were: pH 6.0 (1.0 mol L −1 hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA)/ nitric acid buffer solution); sample volume, 25 mL; and nanoparticle mass, 100 mg. The precisions for the determination of each element, expressed as relative standard deviations (RSD) of standard solutions containing 0.20 mg L −1 of each analyte, were 1.5, 1.8, 1.2 and 2.9% (n = 10), respectively. Limits of detection of 0.032, 0.038, 0.016 and 0.028 mg L -1 were obtained for Cu, Cd, Pb and V, respectively. Addition and recovery tests were performed, and the results ranged from 97 to 115% for Cu, 85 to 115% for Cd, 85 to 99% for Pb and 85 to 110% for V. The method was successfully applied in extraction and determination of Cd, Pb, Cu and V in sugar cane spirit samples from Brazil.

Evidence for low-dose health effects of Arsenic (As) in humans is still controversial and presents a major public health issue in several countries worldwide. It is not clear yet, whether there is a lower safe threshold for arsenic in drinking water among other possible sources such as food, below which, exposures are not harmful. In Uruguay, safe drinking water is supplied to 94% of the population by a state company (OSE) and As levels in workplaces and food are officially regulated. This paper aims to present and discuss the issues regarding arsenic exposure risks to the environment and human population, which are being addressed in a multidisciplinary manner in Uruguay since 2007. An overview is given on both the background and the current situation, presenting reports and research studies conducted on these problems by various academic, state, and private institutions that deal with regulations, surveillance, and health care. Scientific research on geogenic As levels in groundwater indicates As levels above those recommended by the WHO for drinking water (10 μg L-1) in different Uruguayan aquifers. There is a lack of baseline studies concerning Uruguayan residents that are exposed to As in drinking water over time. Furthermore, there is a need for data on environmental chemical exposure that could be associated with disease or death in the country. In addition, only a few As risk exposure assessment studies in children, adults, and workers using biomarkers in urine are available. Furthermore, this paper presents As levels in a rice growing region and the spatial distribution of groundwater arsenic data compared to a national cancer atlas database as ongoing research advances. Multidisciplinary research projects and local future actions are also described. This contribution constitutes a first attempt to develop a feasible health risk assessment of low-dose arsenic exposure in this Latin-American country

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The reaction of toluene (T) with ·OH produces addition products as well as the benzyl radical (TR). TR can react with ·OH or O2 to produce oxygenated species, for many of which there is no experimental information available. We present here theoretically determined heats of formation (HFs) of 17 such species using the non-isodesmic reactions on the potential energy surface of TR + O2 and T + ·OH +O2. For those species the experimental HFs of which are known, we obtained a good correlation between experimental and theoretical values at the G4 (r2 = 0.999) and M06/cc-pVQZ (r2 = 0.997) levels, thus showing the goodness of the methods used. Experimentally unknown HFs of other radicals (benzyloxyl, spiro [1,2-dioxetane benzyl], hydroxyphenyl and benzylperoxyl) and closed-shell species (salicylic alcohol, benzo[b]oxetane and p-hydroxy cyclohexa-2,5-dienone) were later determined using those methods.

Hanseniaspora is the main genus of the apiculate yeast group that represents about 70% of the grape-associated microflora. Hanseniaspora vineae is emerging as a promising species for quality wine production compared to other non-Saccharomyces Wines produced by H. vineae with Saccharomyces cerevisiae consistently exhibit more intense fruity flavours and complexity than wines produced by S. cerevisiae alone.In this work, genome sequencing, assembling and phylogenetic analysis of two strains of H. vineae shows that it is a member of the Saccharomyces complex and it diverged before the Whole Genome Duplication (WGD) event from this clade. Specific flavour gene duplications and absences were identified in the H. vineae genome, as compared to 14 fully sequenced industrial S. cerevisiae genomes. The increased formation of 2-phenylethyl acetate and phenylpropanoids such as 2-phenylethyl and benzyl alcohols might be explained due to gene duplications of H. vineae aromatic amino acid aminotransferases (ARO8, ARO9) and phenylpyruvate decarboxylases (ARO10).Transcriptome and aroma profiles under fermentation conditions confirmed these genes were highly expressed at the beginning of stationary phase coupled to the production of their related compounds. The extremely high level of acetate esters produced by H. vineae compared to S. cerevisiae is consistent with the identification of six novel proteins with alcohol acetyltransferase (AATase) domains. The absence of the branched-chain-amino-acid transaminases (BAT2) and acyl-CoA/ethanol O-acyltransferases (EEB1) genes, correlates with H. vineae reduced production of branched-chain higher alcohols, fatty acids and ethyl esters, respectively. Our study provides sustenance to understanding and potentially utilizing genes that determine fermentation aromas.Importance The huge diversity of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in grapes is dominated by the apiculate genus Hanseniaspora Two native strains of H. vineae applied to winemaking due to their high oenological potential in aroma and fermentation performance, were selected to obtain high quality genomes. Here, we present a phylogenetic analysis, and the complete transcriptome and aroma metabolome of H. vineae during three fermentation steps. This species produced significantly richer flavour compound diversity compared to Saccharomyces, such as benzenoids, phenylpropanoids, and acetate derived compounds. The identification of six proteins, different from S. cerevisiae ATF, with diverse acetyl transferase domains in H. vineae offers a relevant source of native genetic variants for this enzymatic activity. The discovery of benzenoid synthesis capacity in H. vineae provides a new eukaryotic model to dilucidate an alternative pathway to that catalysed by plants' phenylalanine lyases.

Synthetic dyes in watercourses resulting from industrial effluent discharges cause serious ecological impacts, besides carcinogenic and mutagenic effects on human health. Thus, it is important to develop effective methods to remove the dyes from industrial wastewaters, and also to carry out adequate toxicity studies to establish their safety. Azo dyes are the main class of industrial dyes and important environmental contaminants. We have examined the decolorization of two azo dyes (Acid Red 88 and Acid Black 172) by a native Trametes villosa laccase immobilized on thiolsulfinate-agarose as well as the effect of different redox mediators in the reactions. The method was effective for the decolorization of both dyes. The immobilization method did not affect the capacity of the biocatalyst for dye degradation. Therefore, the insoluble enzyme removed 97% of the color of AR88 and 92% of AB172 in 24 hours at 22 °C in the presence of the selected redox mediators, vanillin (0.1 mM) and violuric acid (1.0 mM), respectively. In addition, the immobilized enzyme kept 78% of its initial capacity for decolorization of AR88 after three cycles of use. The ecotoxicological evaluation of the solutions showed a great variation depending on the biological systems used. In the phytotoxicity test, the decolorization products were not toxic to plants, whereas in Daphnia magna and Microtox® bioassays an acute residual toxicity was found. The last outcome shows the importance of using a battery of bioassays to determine the remaining ecotoxicity of the treated effluents before their discharge into the aquatic environment.

Technetium-99m has a rich coordination chemistry that offers many possibilities in terms of oxidation states and donor atom sets. Modifications in the structure of the technetium complexes could be very useful for fine tuning the physicochemical and biological properties of potential 99mTc radiopharmaceuticals. However, systematic study of the influence of the labelling strategy on the “in vitro” and “in vivo” behaviour is necessary for a rational design of radiopharmaceuticals. Herein we present a review of the influence of the Tc complexes’ molecular structure on the biodistribution and the interaction with the biological target of potential nitroimidazolic hypoxia imaging radiopharmaceuticals presented in the literature from 2010 to the present. Comparison with the gold standard [18F]Fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) is also presented

A summary of the resource.
The hexanuclear compounds [Fe6O2Cl2{(py)2CO2}2(pyOH)2(pyCOO)2(ButCOO)6] (1) and [Fe6O2{(py)2CO2}2(pyCOO)4(ButCOO)6] (2) were obtained by condensation of the trinuclear μ3-oxo-centered iron(III) pivalate [Fe3O(ButCOO)6(H2O)3]+ in the presence of di(2-pyridyl)ketone [(py)2CO] in MeCN at ambient temperature. Both complexes contain an analogous core which can be described as two {Fe3O}7+ units joined by gem-diolato (py)2CO22− bridges. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements in polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 reveal strong antiferromagnetic couplings between the iron(III) ions leading to S = 0 ground states.

As a fundamental part of their chemical education, first-year undergraduate students are substantially involved in laboratory activities. Despite the specific teaching staff choices on the main laboratory aims, students normally receive a vast amount of information during these activities. Apart from understanding theoretical content, fundamental skills such as manipulation, data collection and interpretation should be developed. In this context, learners could feel overwhelmed since they can only process a few pieces of information at a time. Indeed, our experience at the Universidad de la República (Uruguayan public university) shows that many first-year students are in fact not able to cope with all the information they receive during laboratory activities. As a result, many of them only follow the experimental protocol automatically, without gaining significant knowledge or developing the necessary skills. In this work, we assessed the use of new online interactive pre-laboratory activities implemented for 252 first-year university students enrolled in a 12-module General Chemistry laboratory course. The student choice of interactive versus more traditional material was evaluated together with observed preferences regarding the different interactive tools offered. Besides, an online pre-laboratory discussion forum was also implemented and assessed. Both the interactive material and the discussion forum were chosen freely by the majority of students (61% and 79%, respectively). Interestingly, the choice was to some extent modulated by student previous performance. Interactive pre-laboratory material was more frequently chosen by low previous performance students, whereas pre-laboratory forum was preferentially used by high previous performance students. Finally, the influence of these new materials on student laboratory performance was statistically analyzed. Other personal and academic variables were also taken into account. Interactive material access was positively correlated with the final laboratory marks for medium previous performance learners. On the other hand, for lower previous performance students, the academic discussion between teachers and partners promoted by the online forum was positively correlated with their academic performance.

The primary coordination around the Te(IV) atom is consistent with a pseudo-trigonal bipyramidal bond configuration with two Cl atoms occupying axial positions while the C atoms and the lone pair of electrons occupy the equatorial positions. The Te(IV) atom is involved in an intermolecular secondary interaction resulting in the self assembly of zigzag-chains supramolecular array. In order to determine the theoretical basis set for the Te atom which leads to the best agreement with the experimental data, a large series of geometry optimizations were performed on dichloro dimethyl Te(IV), as a model compound, and the results compared with the mean distances and angles obtained from 45 X-ray structures. The larvae of the cestodes belonging to the genus Echinococcus are outwardly protected by the laminated layer (LL), a crucial but poorly understood carbohydrate-rich acellular structure. Carbohydrate structural data strongly suggest that the main components of the LL are mucins. The most massive LL in the genus is featured by E. granulosus, agent of cystic hydatid disease. No appropriate methods existed to date for the solubilisation of the E. granulosus LL and the electrophoretic visualisation of its proposed structural mucins. We report that reduction of disulphides greatly aids LL disassembly, resulting in almost full solubilisation in combination with moderate sonication. The structural mucins can then be visualised by agarose electrophoresis and blotting with galactose-binding lectins, which also react strongly with the LL in tissue sections. A substantial portion of the material migrates as if positively charged; since the LL glycans are neutral, this may correspond to mucins with cationic peptide backbones.

A summary of the resource.
Hydatid disease, which affects humans and various livestock species, is caused by the larval stages of the cestode parasite Echinococcus granulosus. The disease involves the growth of a fluid-filled cyst in the host's internal organs. The hydatid cyst wall is generally thought to preclude the access of host immune cells to the cyst, while allowing passage of macromolecules. Thus, evasion of humoral effector mechanisms, in particular the complement system, may be crucial to parasite survival. Evasion of complement might involve inhibition of the C3b deposition step, which can in principle be achieved through parasite-derived or host-derived and parasite-bound regulatory molecules. In this work, extracts from bovine hydatid cysts were analyzed for the presence of factor H-like function, namely the cofactor activity for the breakdown of amidated bovine C3 by bovine factor I. Both this activity and antigenically detectable bovine factor H were found in most extracts. The cofactor activity was retained by an anti-bovine factor H Ab column; as no factor H-cross-reactive parasite molecules were detected in the active extracts, the activity was indeed due to host factor H. The pattern of extraction of host factor H from the parasite tissue indicated that at least part of it was selectively bound to the cyst wall, and that a strong charge component was involved in the binding. Our results indicate that the selective concentration of host factor H from plasma/interstitial fluid may contribute to complement evasion by E. granulosus.

Two new steroid saponins, named laxumins A and B, were isolated from the ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Solanum laxum. These compounds were characterized, using mainly NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and chemical methods, as (23S,25S)-spirost-5-en-3 beta, 15 alpha, 23-triol 3-O-{beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)- beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-beta-D- galactopyranoside} and 3-O-{beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1--> 4)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-beta-D-galactopyranoside}, respectively.

A summary of the resource.
A new, efficient and economic method employing Medium Pressure Liquid Chromatography (MPLC) for the isolation of the two majorSolanum tuberosum L. glycoalkaloids (α-solanine and α-chaconine) is described. Potato peelings are homogenised with 5% acetic acid, the glycoalkaloids purified by filtration through an XAD-2 column and then by precipitation from the aqueous solution. The resulting glycoalkaloid fraction was purified by MPLC using a Silica Gel column and a CHCl3:MeOH:2% NH4OH mixture (70∶30∶5) as mobile phase to yield pure α-chaconine and a-solanine. This methodology can be used to obtain glycoalkaloids for enthomology and toxicological research where large amounts of these compounds are required.

The Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil. (yerba mate) saponins effectively inhibit the passive diffusion of cholic acid through dialysis membranes. The formation of large macromolecular mixed micelles between cholic acid and yerba mate saponins could explain this effect. The observed inhibition of the passive diffusion of cholic acid used as a model of bile acids, could have an antihypercholesterolaemic effect in vivo due to an increased sterols excretion.

A summary of the resource.
A new spirosten δ-lactone saponin, named foliumin, was isolated from the ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Solanum amygdalifolium and characterized, using NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, methylation analysis and specific chemical degradations, as (22S,23R,25R)-3β,15α,23-trihydroxyspirost-5-en-26-one 3-O-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-d-glucopyranoside.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The infrared spectra of the bis-chelated Cu(I1) complexes of the amino acids glycine, alanine, leucine, isoleuceine, valine and phenylalanine, which posses different kind of pharmacologic activity, were recorded and analyzed in relation to its structural peculiarities. Some comparisons between the recorded spectra are also presented and the characteristics of the carboxylate motions as well as those of the metal-to-ligand vibrations are discussed in detail.

The main components present in Hordeum vulgare ssp.distichum cv. Fairfield and ssp.hexastichum cv. Klondike seed waxes are described. The principal constituents in the distichum subspecies include hydrocarbons and esters with a small percentage of β-diketones. β-Diketones, however, are the main components of the subspecies hexastichum wax.
