Biological and psychosocial factors affect child development and behavior. Whereas biological underpinnings behind the neurotoxic effects of lead are studied extensively, the effects of psychosocial factors contributing to poor behavioral outcomes in lead-exposed children are not well understood. Parental attributes and practices may moderate or mediate the effects of lead on children’s behavioral outcomes. We investigated the hypothesis that maternal and child lead and hemoglobin levels are associated with maternal perceptions of their parenting. Specifically, we hypothesized that children with higher blood lead (BLL) and lower hemoglobin concentrations would be associated with poorer maternal self-assessments of their parenting skills or the mother–child relationship. Children aged 13–55 months and their mothers (n = 109) were recruited from among the participants of a previous lead and anemia screening study and from preschools in Montevideo, Uruguay. The mother–child pair attended two study visits: one to collect biological samples and answer demographic and child questionnaires, including statements regarding parenting; and a second to evaluate maternal IQ, depression and stress, and child development. Of the children, 51.6% had blood lead concentrations (BLLs) �5 mg/dL, 18.0% had anemia, and 8% had both conditions. Among mothers, 48.4% had BLLs �5 mg/dL, 16.0% had anemia, and 11% had both. BLLs �5 mg/dL in mother or child were associated with lower maternal perceptions of being skilled at discipline (p < 0.05). Maternal anemia was associated with lower likelihood that mothers would let their children explore and play (p < 0.05), whereas child anemia was associated with maternal perception of lower emotional support (p < 0.01). In addition to shared environmental exposures, parenting and family interactions need to be considered as potentially contributing factors to poorer outcomes in lead-exposed children.

A summary of the resource.
The flavor of eight samples of commercial strawberry yogurt was studied by Free-Choice Profile analysis (FCP). Generalized Procrustes Analysis (GPA) applied to FCP allowed differentiation between samples and highlighted flavor attributes responsible for the observed differences. The relation between sensory and physicochemical datasets was studied by means of GPA. Those samples with higher carbohydrate content were perceived as sweeter, having stronger strawberry flavor, and with more dairy and yogurt flavors. Samples with higher titratable acidity, ash and protein content were perceived as more acidic and higher in intensity of “faulty” or “defective” flavors. Higher moisture content was associated with lower intensity of “dairy” flavors (creamy, dairy, and yogurt) and greater intensity of rancid flavor. It is concluded that, though not often used to this end, GPA is a suitable method to study the relationship of sensory and instrumental measurements.

Environmental manganese (Mn) exposure in childhood has been associated with developmental deficits. This study investigated associations between low-level Mn exposure and developmental scores in children aged 14–45 months. Children’s hair samples (n = 60) were analyzed for Mn and lead (Pb) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Children were assessed with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development III (BSID). Mean hair Mn and Pb concentrations were 0.98 ± 0.74 and 10.1 ± 10.5 μg/g, respectively. Unadjusted inverse associations were seen between Mn and BSID subscales, with girls having lower scores related to Mn than boys. No significant associations remained in covariate-adjusted models, although when stratified by sex boys had a positive association between hair Mn levels and language scores. This study does not show clear evidence of an association between hair Mn concentrations and children’s developmental scores in a region of low-level Mn exposure.

Background: In the human body, inorganic arsenic (iAs) is methylated via the one-carbon cycle to form monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA). Lower proportions of iAs and MMA, and higher proportions of DMA in urine indicate efficient methylation; formation of DMA is thought to detoxify iAs and MMA. Studies on folate, vitamin B-12 and iAs methylation yield mixed findings, depending on whether folate and vitamin B-12 were assessed from diet, supplements, or using a blood biomarker. Objective: First, to compare the associations of serum concentrations and estimated intake of folate and vitamin B- 12 with indicators of iAs methylation. Second, to highlight the implications of these different B-vitamin assessment techniques on the emerging evidence of the impact of dietary modifications on iAs methylation. Methods: The study was conducted among ~7-year-old children from Montevideo, Uruguay. Serum folate and vitamin B-12 levels were measured on the Horiba ABX Pentra 400 analyzer; urinary arsenic was measured using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography on-line with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Dietary intakes were assessed using the average of two 24-h dietary recalls. Linear regressions assessed the associations of serum levels, and dietary intakes of folate (n ¼ 237) and vitamin B-12 (n ¼ 217) with indicators of iAs methylation. Models were adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, total urinary arsenic, and rice intake. Results: Serum folate and vitamin B-12 levels were above the adequacy threshold for 99% of the participants. No associations were observed between serum folate, serum vitamin B-12, or vitamin B-12 intake and iAs methylation. Tannat is a red variety of Vitis vinifera that has become the emblematic red wine variety of Uruguay. Tannat wine is characterized by its high total phenolic content, which provides a good potential for aging and differential sensory characteristics. The aim of the present thesis was to characterize the astringency of Uruguayan Tannat wines from both a physicochemical and sensory perspective. Astringency is a complex and timedependent attribute, which exhibits buildup and carry over effects upon repeated ingestions, and is related to several subtle sensations that can be perceived simultaneously. This poses several challenges for the accurate sensory characterization of Tannat wine astringency, which have been addressed during the development of the thesis. First, qualitative studies with consumers were carried out to understand their conceptualization of astringency and the vocabulary they use for describing this complex attribute. Basic research about the applicability of different palate cleansers for wine astringency evaluation was also conducted. The astringency of 40 commercial wines was characterized using static and dynamic sensory methods: Time-Intensity (TI), checkall- that-apply (CATA) questions and Temporal Dominance of Sensations (TDS). The TI evaluations performed by a panel of trained assessors showed that commercial Tannat wines mainly differed in intensity-related parameters rather than in astringency development over time, although the variability was moderate. CATA questions involving 16 astringency sub-qualities proved to be a valuable tool to describe and differentiate a large sample set of Tannat wine samples based on their astringency characteristics. Different styles of Tannat wine were identified, which were described using a wide range of sub-qualities, from silky and velvety to harsh and aggressive. The phenolic profile of the 40 commercial Tannat wines was also characterized using reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS) and its relationship with sensory astringency was explored using boosted regression trees. The total content of condensed tannins as well and some specific phenolic compounds were identified as the main predictors of sensory astringency. Finally, the comparison of astringency evaluation of trained assessors and experts showed that their intensity assessments were partly related, but their description of astringency sub-qualities differed. Insights on the astringency sub-qualities related to expert’s perception of astringency quality were also revealed. Results from the thesis provide both methodological insights about astringency evaluation, as well as applied information about the astringency of Tannat wine, which could be highly valuable for the Uruguayan

Astringency is one of the differential characteristics of Tannat wine, the emblematic wine of the Uruguayan wine‐making industry. The aim of this study was twofold: First, to compare wine astringency characterization of experts and trained assessors, and second, to identify which astringency characteristics influence experts' perception of astringency quality. Six commercial Uruguayan Tannat wines were evaluated in triplicate by a trained assessors panel (n = 9). Assessors rated the global astringency intensity using a time‐intensity task, and described astringency subqualities using a check‐all‐that‐apply (CATA) question composed of 16 terms. Samples were also assessed by 30 experts who rated astringency intensity and quality using 9‐point structured scales. In addition, experts described astringency subqualities of samples and of their ideal high‐quality Tannat wine using a CATA question. Significant differences among samples were found in astringency intensity for both panels and expert's perceived quality. Agreement between trained assessors and experts in astringency intensity evaluations was observed, but differences in their description of astringency subqualities were found. Astringency quality as perceived by experts was not related only to astringency global intensity; astringency subqualities complex and velvety were the main drivers of astringency quality, while puckery, sand paper, and irritant significantly lowered quality scores.

Gas-phase kinetics of the overall reactions of • OH and • Cl radicals with dihydrofuran-3(2H)-one (oxolan-3-one) and dihydro-2-methyl-3(2H)-furanone (2MTHF-3-one) were studied at 298 K and atmospheric pressure. The rate coefficients were determined using the relative method in a 480 L multipass glass reactor coupled to an FT-IR detection system. The rate coefficients found for oxolan 3-one and 2MTHF-one with • OH radicals (k1 and k2) and with • Cl atoms (k3 and k4) at 298 K and atmospheric pressure (in cm3 molecule− 1 s − 1 ) were: k1 = (1.86 ± 0.29) × 10− 11, k2 = (2.64 ± 0.47) × 10− 11, k3= (1.15 ± 0.28) × 10 − 10, and k4 = (1.33 ± 0.32) × 10− 10, respectively. Reactivity trends were developed by comparison with other similar structures and Fukui indices employed to determine the reactivity of different sites on the ring. The singularity of the reaction with • OH was assessed by computational studies which showed the formation of several stable hydrogen bonded complexes, explaining the difference with the reaction with the • Cl atom. SAR estimations of the rate coefficients were calculated and compared to the experimental values.

The present work studied attentional capture and importance of package attributes for consumers' perception of similarities and differences among products through a combination of eye-tracking and projective mapping. As a case study, fifty consumers performed a projective mapping task with ten breakfast cereal packages while wearing a mobile eye-tracker. The combination of mobile eye-tracking and projective mapping enabled a more comprehensive analysis of the importance of package attributes for consumer perception. Eye tracking allowed the identification of the most relevant package features for perceived similarity and differences among products and spotted attributes that were attended to but were not relevant, as well as package features that were relevant for categorization but were not largely attended to. Results suggest that studying attentional capture could contribute to better understanding attribute importance for consumer perception. Irrespectively of the saliency, most consumers looked at the same key information, mainly located on the front-of-pack. Few consumers read the nutritional label and ingredient list (a much lower proportion than in previous static eye tracker studies). Results suggested that mobile eye-tracking has a great potential for assessing consumers' evaluation of packages in ecological settings. However, several disadvantages and limitations of the technique should be taken into account.

The aim of the present work was to assess the influence of nutrition information format on attentional capture and consumers’ understanding. Sixteen labels of two products (yoghurt and pan bread) were designed following a four 2-level factors full factorial design with the following variables: label background design, type of product, nutrition information format and traffic light system. The labels were presented to 178 consumers, who were asked to decide whether the fat/sodium content of each yoghurt/pan bread label was medium or low. Participant responses and reaction times were recorded. Results showed that type of product, nutrition information format and traffic light system significantly affected the time needed by consumers to find the nutrition information and to classify the labels according to their content of a given nutrient. Meanwhile, consumers’ understanding of the labels was mostly affected by the content of the nutrient and the presence of the traffic light system.

The bronze bug, Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero & Dellape (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae), is an exotic emerging pest in Eucalyptus commercial forests in South America, Africa and southern Europe. Information on the chemical communication system and reproductive ecology of this insect is scant, and it may be relevant for designing management strategies for eucalypt plantations. Adults and nymphs usually aggregate in the field, possibly by means of chemical signals. Males emit large amounts of 3-methyl-2-butenyl butyrate, which attracts conspecific adult males but not females. The ecological role of this putative male aggregation pheromone remains unknown. Here, we report olfactometer bioassays showing that late-instarmale nymphs are also attracted to synthetic 3-methyl-2-butenyl butyrate and to adult male volatile extracts, which contain this compound as the major component. As previously shown for adult females, nymphs that moulted into females were not attracted to either volatile stimulus. The intra-gender attraction of nymphs and adults may be related to the exploitation of food resources, or as a reproductive strategy for newly emerged males. Further studies on the reproductive behaviour and mating system of T. peregrinus will contribute to understanding the ecological significance of male-male, adultnymph attraction, as well as the practical applications that may result from these findings.

Aureobasidium pullulans was the microorganism most frequently recovered from the surface of apple fruit (cv. Red Delicious) stored in commercial cold chambers for 6 months. In the present work, 10 isolates of Aureobasidium pullulans were assayed to determine if they could control blue and grey mold disease of apple during cold storage. Although nine of 10 isolates, significantly reduced the percentage of decayed wounds when compared to the control, one of them, designated isolate ApB, showed the highest levels of protection. ApB was able to grow in a wide range of temperatures lower than 358C, which is an important human health safety factor. ApB was resistant to thiabendazole, iprodione and imazalil, the most commonly commercially applied fungicides in postharvest treatment of apples in Uruguay. Regarding the mechanisms of action of the selected biocontrol agent, lytic enzymes did not seem to play a central role. ApB depleted iron from nutrient media, which may be an important aspect of its ability to inhibit Botrytis cinerea. Further experiments are needed, however, to determine if the depletion of iron is caused by the production of siderophores, by the immobilization of iron in an insoluble pigment, or a combination of both.

<p>A multicommutated flow system was designed and evaluated for the determination of total arsenic and selenium by Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (HG-AAS). It was applied to the determination of arsenic and selenium in samples of natural and drinking water. Detection limits were 0.46 and 0.08 lg l-1 for arsenic and selenium, respectively; sampling frequency was 120 samples h-1 for arsenic and 160 samples h-1 for selenium. Linear ranges found were 1.54–10 lg l-1 (R = 0.999) for arsenic and 0.27–27 lg l-1 (R = 0.999) for selenium. Accuracy was evaluated by spiking various water samples and using a reference material. Recoveries were in the range 95–116%. Analytical precision (sr (%), n = 10) was 6% for both elements. Compared with the Standard Methods, APHA, 3114B manual method, the system consumes at least 10 times less sample per determination, and the quantities of acid and reducing agent used are significantly lower with a reduction in the generation of pollutants and waste. As an additional advantage, the system is very fast, efficient and environmentally friendly for monitoring total arsenic and selenium levels in waters</p>

A summary of the resource.
A flow injection system is presented for the determination of the insolubles content in used lubricating oil samples. The system is based on the injection of an aliquot of the sample in a stream of organic solvent where it is dispersed, and measurement of the scattered radiation (measured as apparent absorbance) in the visible range (λ = 640 nm). An LED-based photometer was used for this purpose. The whole system including sample injection and data acquisitionwas controlled by a personal computer. Calibration curves exhibited good linearity (h = 0.415±0.016C+ 0.00±0.03, r2 = 0.9995, confidence level of 95%) in the range up to 2.68% (insolubles in pentane). Detection and quantification limits were respectively 0.07% and 0.16% (w/w). The method was validated by analysis of 25 real samples by the proposed method and the FTIR method finding high correlation. Waste generation and reactive consumption is much less than in the official method (ASTM D-893). The proposed method employs 25mL of kerosene per sample while the official method employs 200mL of pentane.

An automatic lab-made system involving the use of flow injec - tion analysis (FIA) was designed and constructed for the determi - nation of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in par - enteral solutions by flame atomic absorption and emission spec - trometry. The system carries out the necessary dilutions and addition of spectroscopic buffers as well as data acquisition under software control from a personal computer. Good recoveries, precision and stability were found, suggest - ing its use for the automation of quality control of parenteral solutions in the pharmaceutical industry.

Introdução: Em 2015 o agente etiológico Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), causador da tuberculose, alcançou 10,4 milhões de pessoas no mundo, ficando em primeiro lugar entre as doenças infecto-contagiosas que mais matam pessoas. O seu difícil combate é devido principalmente ao surgimento das cepas resistentes, por isso o descobrimento de novas moléculas se faz necessário. Neste trabalho determinou-se a concentração inibitória mínima (CIM90), que é a concentração capaz de inibir 90% do crescimento bacteriano dos ligantes hinokitiol (hino) e tropolona (trop) e seus complexos com Pt (platina) e Pd (paládio contra MTB H37Rv (ATCC 27294) e quatro cepas clínicas resistentes a fármacos. Determinou-se também o IC50, que é a concentração capaz de manter 50% da viabilidade celular, através do ensaio de citotoxicidade em células MRC-5 (fibroblasto pulmonar humano). Determinou-se o índice de seletividade (IS) que representa quanto um composto é mais seletivo para a morte do microrganismo sem causar dano celular. Objetivo: Avaliação do potencial anti-MTB dos ligantes hino e trop, seus complexos com Pd e Pt e seus precursores. Metodologia: Tanto o REMA, para determinar a CIM90, quanto o ensaio de citotoxicidade para determinar o IC50, são métodos de microdiluição em placas de 96 poços que utilizam a resazurina como revelador. O inóculo bacteriano utilizado foi de aproximadamente 105 UFC/mL e o intervalo de concentrações foi 25 - 0,098μg/mL. Para o ensaio de citotoxicidade o intervalo de concentrações utilizado foi de 100 - 0,39μg/mL. Para demostrar o IS, calculou-se a divisão dos valores obtidos de IC50/MIC. Resultados e discussão: Com os resultados do REMA nós observamos que a atividade anti-MTB de hino (35.46μM) e trop (29.02μM) sozinhos foram menos ativos que quando complexados com Pd e Pt. Encontramos entre Pd-hino (13.14μM), Pd-trop (9.01μM), Pt-hino (14.73μM), Pt-trop (17.60μM), que Pd-trop é o mais ativo. Já os melhores valores de IS foram para trop (7,02) e hino (7,03), pois os ligantes sozinhos são menos tóxicos para as células. Nos isolados clínicos nós observamos que a atividade foi menor que contra a cepa sensível (H37Rv), mas ainda observamos atividade para trop and Pd-trop confirmando o seu potencial anti-MTB, pois, trop apresentou atividade contra 3 cepas (18,30-99,44μM) e Pd-trop contra 2 (9,05-25,64μM) das 4 cepas testadas. Conclusão: Esses dados demonstram que os ligantes hino e trop apresentam atividade anti-MTB, mas a complexação com Pd e Pt melhora esta atividade. No entanto, a complexação com os metais levou a um aumento na citotoxicidade, apenas hino e trop, quando não complexados, apresentaram IS superiores a 7 enquanto os complexos apresentaram IS menor que 2. A pesquisa de novas moléculas é uma necessidade, visto o aumento da resistência aos antibióticos disponíveis.

Justificativa e Objetivos: O estudo objetivou a avaliação da atividade antibacteriana de extratos brutos e frações de Ibicella lutea, na inibição do crescimento de Staphylococcus aureus, avaliando a combinação destes compostos e sua atividade citotóxica. Métodos: Para a atividade antibacteriana dos extratos foi utilizado o Teste de Microdiluição em Caldo, seguido do Teste Checkerboard. Os extratos que apresentaram atividade antibacteriana foram submetidos ao teste de citotoxicidade, com células macrofágicas e determinação do seu Índice de Seletividade (IS). Resultados: A fração de acetato de etila(AcOE) obteve o melhor potencial antibacteriano (6,25 µg/mL), entretanto nenhum dos compostos testados apresentaram atividade bactericida nas concentrações empregadas. Neste estudo pode-se observar uma ação aditiva entre as frações AcOE e metanólica (MeOH), sendo a interação entre os extratos brutos indiferente. De acordo com o teste de citotoxicidade, a fração AcOE apresentou uma maior índice de sobrevivência das células macrofágicas (IC50%=30,35 µg/mL). Entretanto, quando calculado o IS, não houve resultados satisfatórios (IS < 10) para os extratos analisados. Conclusões: Neste estudo observou-se o potencial antibacteriano das frações AcOE e MeOH, assim como uma ação aditiva na combinação das frações, dando suporte para o isolamento e caracterização de seus componentes ativos. Apesar dos extratos não apresentarem um IS satisfatório, novos estudos de toxicidade devem ser realizados para determinar com segurança o potencial de uso dos produtos provenientes de I. lutea, como é o caso de medicamentos para uso tópico ou biocidas.
