This is a review, from an independent and scientific point of view, of the different aspects involved in the issue of pesticides in Uruguay. In its preparation, the University, responsible official institutions, nongovernment environmental organizations, and independent experts have been consulted. As to the legal framework, the responsibilities of the institutions are described and evaluated. The earlier and current regulations for the registration and sale of pesticides are presented, as well as the available information on the active ingredients most used in Uruguay. Official control is evaluated in reference to pesticide residues in food, drinking water, and the environment and to final waste disposal. Maximum allowed residue limits and the responsibilities of the corresponding governmental institutions are presented. Emphasis is placed on the fact that there are no publicly available data. Several research programs are presented, mainly from academia, and usually are not completed due to lack of financial support. In the conclusions the most problematic aspects are pointed out, emphasizing the need to improve national regulations for the country to establish an effective system of control. The importance of financial support to achieve this control and to conduct interdisciplinary studies to determine the real situation is discussed. The purpose of this study is to assess the environmental lead exposure of a group of people living near a lead smelter aiready closed. Blood lead levels of 84 adults and 11 children living at a residential complex (Euskal Ema) situated 2 km far from the source were determined. Personal data collected for each subject was concomitant with the taking of blood samples. The data collected included sex, age, time of residence and symptoms that could be related to lead exposure. Lead in blood was determined by flame atomic'absoprtion spectrophotometry after complexation of lead with DDDC and direct extraction into meíhylisobuíhyl- ketone using as a Perkin Elmer 2380 equipment. The analytical method was validated by an international intercalibration program. A control population of 29 unexposed adults and 34 unexposed children from different places of Montevideo was included in the study. The average blood lead concentration for adults was 9.3 µg % (range 6.1-15.0) and 10.0 µg % for children (range 6.0-16.9).For the population under study the average blood lead concentration obtained was 8.6 µg % for adults (range 3.1-24.8) and 9.3 µg % for children (range 6.1-15.0). The results obtained were beneath the limits established by WHO, and could be compared with the control population. They also show that there are no other lead sources in the residential environment considered. In the first one, the oxalate group behaves as a bis(bidentate) ligand occupying one equatorial and one axial position in the elongated octahedral environment of Cu(II). The water molecule is axially coordinated. In the second one, the oxalate group behaves as a bidentate/monodentate ligand occupying the axial position in the square pyramidal environment of Cu(II). The acetonitrile molecule occupies a basal coordination position around the copper atom. These units are arranged in such a way that a chlorine atom of the first unit (Cl(1)) points toward the copper atom (Cu(2))of the second one (3.077(2) A for Cl(1)(.)Cu(2)), forming a tetranuclear species. The copper-rhenium separation across bis(didentate) oxalato is 5.504(3) A, whereas that through bidentate/monodentate oxalato is 5.436(2) A. The magnetic behavior of 2 and 3 has been investigated over the temperature range 1.8-300 K. A very weak and nearly identical antiferromagnetic coupling between Re(IV) and Cu(II) through bis(bidentate) oxalato occurs in 2 (J = -0.90 cm(-1)) and 3 (J = -0.83 cm(-1)); it is ferromagnetic in 3 through both the bidentate-monodentate oxalato (J = +5.60 cm(-1)) and the chloro (J = +0.70 cm(-1)) bridges. The ruthenium–semicarbazide complex has been characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopies and X-ray diffraction methods. Related semicarbazones, derived from p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and benzaldehyde, were not hydrolyzed under the same conditions, suggesting a significant role of the structural o-hydroxy motive in the reaction. Theoretical studies were performed in order to gain further insight on the mechanism of reaction. Results support the hypothesis that the ortho-hydroxy moiety, in the keto tautomeric form, participates in the chemo-selective hydrolysis promoted by [RuCl2(dmso)4]. Herein, we report the assessment of six DFT methods (BP86, TPSS, B3LYP, X3LYP, PBE1PBE, BH&HLYP) in describing the nature of the chemical bonds, structural, and electronic properties of the closed-shell oxocomplex of Re(V) [ReO(bdt)2]� and the open-shell oxocomplex of V(IV) [VO(bdt)2]2� (bdt2� = 1,2-benzenedithiolato). Several basis sets were employed, and different effective core potentials were taken as variables into account. PBE1PBE is found to be the best overall performer in describing M@S bonds. It is followed by two groups composed in turn of BP86, TPSS, and BH&HLYP, and another one including B3LYP and X3LYP. For the M@O bonds, the performance has a direct dependency on the Hartree–Fock exchange. On going from the pure GGA (BP86) and m-GGA (TPSS) to BH&HLYP, a sensible improvement is obtained for the Re@O bond distances. However, for the V@O bond the opposite is true, being BH&HLYP the worst choice. The M@S and M@O chemical bonds have been analyzed in terms of the natural bond orbital theory. All sulfur atoms participate in r bonds strongly polarized toward the non-metal, in which the hybridization at the metal has mainly d character and at the non-metal, p character. For the Re@O bonds, interesting features were found. This work shows that PBE1PBE in combination with the MIDI! basis set and the Stuttgart energy consistent pseudopotentials for metals is the best methodology for the study of rhenium and vanadium complexes with thiolato ligands. We have tested our hypothesis performing comparative calculations for the [Re6S8X6]4� (X� = Cl�, Br�, I�) hexanuclear clusters. The results obtained at the PBE1PBE/STMIDI significantly improve those published previously and the computational cost is small. Therefore, we recommend this methodology to study large of transition metal complexes containing thiolato ligands. In addition to the already known commersonine, demissine, tomatine and dehydrocommersonine, a new glycoalkaloid, identified as δ5-demissine, solanid -5-en-3-O- {β-D-Glcp-(1→2)-[β-D-Xylp-(1→3) ]β-D-Glcp-(1→4)-β-D-Galp } was found. Tomatine and dehydrocommersonine have not been reported earlier as components of this plant. The glycoalkaloid composition found in the wild plants studied differ significatively from those described earlier, and have some implications in taxonomy and its use in potato breeding. Palladium(II) complexes of 2-benzoylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (H2Bz4DH) and its N(4)-methyl (H2Bz4M) and N(4)-phenyl (H2Bz4Ph) derivatives were obtained and fully characterized. [Pd(2Bz4DH)Cl] (1) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a = 11.671(1), b = 10.405(1), c = 13.124(1), b = 115.60(1)� and Z = 4; [Pd(2Bz4M)Cl] (2) in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a = 9.695(1), b = 15.044(1), c = 10.718(1) A ˚ , b = 105.38(1)� and Z = 4 and [Pd(2Bz4Ph)Cl] (3) in the triclinic space group P�1 with a = 9.389(1), b = 13.629(1), c = 15.218(1) A ˚ , a = 70.25(1), b = 73.46(1), c = 83.57(1)� and two independent molecules per asymmetric unit (Z = 4). All complexes show a quite similar planar fourfold environment around palladium(II). A negatively charged organic molecule acts as a tridentate ligand and binds to the metal through the pyridine nitrogen, the imine nitrogen and the sulfur atom. A chloride ion occupies the fourth coordination site. The planar complexes stack nearly parallel to one another in the lattice conforming a layered crystal structure. The cytotoxic activity of the thiosemicarbazones and their metal complexes was tested against the MCF-7, TK-10 and UACC-62 human tumor cell lines. The ligands exhibit lower values of GI50 and LC50 than the complexes, H2Bz4Ph being the most active with GI50 < 0.003 lM; LC50 = 13.4 lM; GI50 = 9.3 lM, LC50 = 12.9 lM; GI50 < 0.003, LC50 = 13.8 lM in the MCF-7, TK-10 and UACC-62 cell lines, respectively. Among the complexes, [Pd(2Bz4Ph)Cl] (3) exhibited the lowest values of GI50 in the three studied cell lines. A relevant subject in biochemistry is the study of diverse effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on organisms. While short exposure of culture cells to UV radiation may produce point mutations, deletions, or rearrangements, long exposure may lead to cellular death. In this article, we describe a laboratory project quantifying the effects of UV radiation on a suspension of living cells. This laboratory experiment was designed for undergraduate students in biochemistry. The experiment was carried out employing different fungi strains, changing the dosage of radiation, the distance to the UV source, and the exposure period to the UV radiation. The quantity of viable spores was calculated and the dose–response curves were drawn. Students were able to prove that 100% of mortality was achieved with the longest time of exposure. The percent of cell survival decreased when the distance to the UV source was shorter. After the experimental manipulation, groups of students shared results with one another, and a final report with comparison of the results was to be handed in by each one. Thus, this experiment engaged the students in a mini-research experience. The pedagogic aim of this laboratory design is to familiarize students with chemical UV radiation reactions responsible for cellular and molecular damage.
